eero 7 and eero Pro 7 routerseeroIts taken over a year, but eero (a subsidiary of Amazon) is finally releasing two new WiFi 7 routers at more affordable price points.Last February, eero introduced WiFi 7 into their tech stack with the (still excellent) eero Max 7. The Max was unparalleled in delivering fast, reliable WiFi 7 access. The only problem is that a single router comes in at a wallet-blistering $599. Want a 3-pack? That'll cost you over $1,500. It's the kind of price tag that severely limits adoption to only the most pro of prosumers. So I was thrilled to see that eero is releasing two new routers at considerably lower price points. But more than just being "cheaper" versions of the Max 7, these new routers are smartly tuned to offer the latest networking standard and the right amount of tech without inflating the price point with unneeded extras. Why WiFi 7?But first off, why should you care about WiFi 7? Each new generational WiFi standard evolution claims vast speed and bandwidth improvements. That's not news. After all, the latest WiFi standard offered slower speeds, no one would adopt it.It's how WiFi 7 delivers that perception of improved speed matters.Because here's the thing, unless you're a professional gamer or streamer, you're not going to tax your home's bandwidth. You're rarely going to be in a situation where you need all the speed capacity that the increased bandwidth of a new router provides. However, you are likely to be in a place where multiple devices (including Internet-enabled smart things) are all jockeying for space on your network at the same time. And that's where WiFi 7 shines. It provides lower latency for high-demand tasks (like streaming and gaming) and has multi-band capabilities, reducing congestion overall. With the improved channel management, upgrading to even just a low-end WiFi 7 router feels like a major upgrade because all those devices that were crowding your network are better managed and have room to breathe.WiFi 7 for the Masseseero 7eeroAt the "entry-level" we have the newly-announced eero 7. The dual-band system offers WiFi 7 capabilities with support for 2.4 and 5 GHz. It can deliver 1.8 Gbps wirelessly and 2.3 Gbps of wired speed (through one of two ethernet ports). It can handle up to 120 devices (which seems like a lot until you start counting all the things in your home that need to connect to the internet these days). It's a demure dollop of a router, with a compact form factor that's better suited to bookshelves and areas with limited space. Surprisingly, even though it's a wee thing, it can cover up to 2,000 sq. ft. of space and be paired with two other units for a max coverage of 6,000 sq. ft. At just $169 per unit, it's an affordable way to add speed to a lot of space.eero Pro 7Just Righteero Pro 7eeroComing in at $299 per router, the eero Pro 7 has more bandwidth and delivers more speed. In an ISP environment where 5 Gbps service is becoming the "pro" standard, the eero Pro 7 can deliver up to 4.7 Gbps through its multigig GbE ports. It can also handle more devices, maxing out at 200.It's taller than the eero 7, utilizing the same thermal design as the Max 7 to deliver reliable internet without having to use active cooling. It offers tri-band capability as well, including the 6 GHz band that the eero 7 lacks. Why is that important? It just means your advanced devices (like the latest iPhone or Android) have more options when accessing your home network.eero 7, Pro 7, Max 7, and Outdoor 7eeroThe Pro 7 also covers 2,000 sq. ft. per unit, with the ability to pair two more routers for a max coverage area of 6,000 sq. ft. (or you could pair it with something like the eero Outdoor 7).The eero Pro 7 hits that sweet spot for me of affordability and utility. While the Max 7 is undoubtedly the superior router, its price point makes it hard to justify unless you really do have 10 Gbps service and require professional-grade network coverage. The Gotcha: eero PlusBoth new routers include a trial of eero Plus, eero's subscription service with additional security features, parental controls, internet backup, password management, malware and antivirus. It's an impressive package of software that provides deep insights into your network. I lamented that the $10 per month wasn't included with the Max 7 but the lower price of the eero 7 and eero Pro 7 make that monthly charge easier to justify. That said, you don't need eero Plus to enjoy the reliability and automatic data routing that eero has always done best. If you're the type of person that doesn't even know where their router app is on their phone, you can easily use eero without an additional subscription.Hit the links to find out more about each routerpre-orders are already live, with product shipping next week on the 26th.
