"Don't design, just to design," says Jake Miller. "Set out to solve a problem. Then, solve that problem in the most elegant way imaginable." Miller runs Fellow Products, a company he founded to "introduce more people to specialty coffee through approachable design." Surprisingly, Miller is not an industrial designer himselfhis background is in businessbut he has cited the strong influence of Dieter Rams on Fellow's design aesthetic. "I'm a marketer with an MBA, but I was able to take classes at the Stanford School of Engineering and at the [Design] School and that's where Fellow was started," Miller said in an interview with Shopify. "Fellow was dreamed up with the spirit of never having to choose between aesthetics and functionality," Miller said in a different interview with coffee t&i magazine. To that end, a lot of Fellow's productslike these grinders, immediately below--look like they came out of Braun's skunkworks circa the 1960s and '70s. Given today's stripped-down product aesthetic, they could even be mistaken for foamcore mockups that would eventually be refined into a Braun product of that era. "Unfortunately, specialty coffee and tea culture can be both overwhelming and intimidating," Miller states. Fellow's bid to make gear accessible and friendly-looking has yielded these vacuum canisters and tumblers: This handsome insulated stainless steel tumbler features a ceramic interior: If you're wondering how the lid closes:One of their designs that deviates beyond the Ramsian is their Corvo Electric Kettle, which veers into Scandinavian territory: All in all, the company produces some really handsome goods. I'm dying to know if they have an inside design team or if they farm this out to different firms. (If you're one of those firms, please drop a line, we'd love to credit you.)
