Currently the Global Head of Design & User Experience at ABB E-Mobility, the "patriotic Welshman," designer, artist, and cyclist has spent more than two decades living in Los Angeles. During this time, he has honed a particular approach to design, striving to create products that "appear to have as little design as possible." From Rhys' point of view, he would rather users perceive his work as "tools or instruments for life" instead. In addition to earning a master's in product design from the Royal College of Art in London and a First Class Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK, Rhys holds multiple patents, has served as a part-time lecturer in numerous universities and as a juror for competitions, and chaired the IDSA IDEA Awards. Over the course of his varied career, Rhys has worked as a freelancer, consultant, head of global design teams in leading companies, co-founded an entrepreneurial venture, and led design for a start-up. Through his many chapters, Rhys continues to be excited by the act of building things from products to teams to creative culture. What he doesn't find exciting in the design world is a lack of optimism. As Rhys believes, "Creativity is by definition an optimistic act." His advice to designers considering entering the Core77 Design Awards is equally sunny and something anyone can follow. In his words: "Don't be a dick (and have fun)."Meta Reality Labs Design Team won the 2024 Consumer Technology category for Meta Quest 3.The 2024 winner in the Core77 Design Awards Consumer Technology category was Meta Reality Labs Design Team for Meta Quest 3, a mixed reality hardware technology that's more comfortable and high-performing than its predecessors.Feeling especially optimistic about your design?
