The American Institute of Architects and over 400 architects have visited Capitol Hill to push for legislation affecting the architecture profession. According to the AIA, the visit centred on five key legislative goals, which were pressed for through direct engagement with policymakers.The first goal, Design Freedom for Federal Architecture, centers on an effort to codify the Guiding Principles through the Democracy in Design Act. AIA is strongly opposed to legislation that seeks to remove control from local communities; mandate official federal design preferences, or otherwise hinder design freedom; and add bureaucratic hurdles for approval of federal building designs, the AIA notes.The second goal, Update Fee Limitations for Federal Contracts, centres on reform for fee caps, and an update to the 6% fee limitation that applies to cost-plus-fixed-fee contracts.
