Influential urban planner and parking guru Donald Shoup passes away at 86

Donald Shoup, the legendary urban planner known for his "radical rethinking of parking policy," has died at the age of 86. The longtime UCLA professor and author of 2005s The High Cost of Free Parking gained notoriety while advancing the field of study immeasurably during a 41-year tenure at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. The New York Times labeled him as "an intellectual hero to urbanists."His passing was likewise responded to by many in the planning community online as the loss of an icon and affable colleague. Shoup won the Associated Collegiate Schools of Planning's Distinguished Educator Award in 2017 after retiring from teaching in 2015. Via LinkedIn, Sarah Bronin said simply, "Weve lost a hero."
