There are lots of different upgrade trees for your weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds, and pursuing each one will require a lot of basic weapons first. You can also choose to upgrade weapons along the basic Exploration path to focus purely on damage and no added elemental damage, though this will require high-end materials.
