A monster hit (Capcom)Monster Hunter Wilds huge opening weekend has helped push Steam to record highs, but the most-played game is still an old veteran.Capcoms Monster Hunter Wilds always seemed destined to be a huge success, based on the player count for the beta, but the games launch has surpassed even the loftiest of expectations. The game, which launched on Friday, hit a concurrent player peak of 1,384,608 over the weekend on Steam. That is the fifth highest player peak on the platform ever, only behind PUBG: Battlegrounds (3.2 million), Black Myth: Wukong (2.4 million), Palworld (2.1 million), and Counter-Strike 2 (1.6 million). For comparison, Monster Hunter: World peaked on Steam at 334,684 concurrent players, while Monster Hunter Rise achieved 231,360 players. This means, on PC alone, the player base for Monster Hunter Wilds is more than triple the size of Monster Hunter: World at launch, aka Capcoms best selling game ever.Monster Hunter Wilds is only the eighth game on Steam to cross the one million concurrent player mark (via SteamDB), beating Lost Ark, Dota 2, and Cyberpunk 2077.What is the highest number of players Steam has had so far? This surge has contributed to a new record high for players on Steam in general. On Sunday, March 2 at 2pm GMT, the total number of concurrent Steam users hit 40,275,012, which is the first time it has ever surpassed the 40 million mark.It crossed 39 million in December 2024, with the concurrent figure having consistently hit new heights over the past two years. Back in January 2023, the record was roughly 33 million. Its a record high for Monster Hunter on Steam (SteamDB)While Monster Hunter Wilds was a key factor, the most played game on Steam right now is, as it usually is, Counter-Strike 2, with just over 1 million players. Wildsis in second with just over 818,000 players, followed by PUBG, Dota 2, and Naraka: Bladepoint.More TrendingMonster Hunter Wilds may have had a successful launch in terms of numbers, but it hasnt been plain sailing. The game currently has a mixed rating on Steam, based on over 57,000 reviews, with many complaining about its performance on PC.Capcom has attempted to remedy the issue with suggestions on how to improve your PCs performance, encouraging players to update graphics drivers and turn off compatibility mode, but it seems like it hasnt entirely rectified the problem. The game has also been impacted by bugs which are stopping players from progressing in mission Chapter 5-2 A World Turned Upside Down. Capcom has announced that a new patch will roll out on Tuesday, March 4 at 8am GMT to combat this issue, which youll be required to download if you want to continue to play online. These issues aside, Monster Hunter Wilds looks set to surpass Monster Hunter: World as Capcoms biggest game ever. Which bodes well for not just the franchise itself but Capcoms plans for all its other series.
