I Don't Care If Conversational Siri Lands on My iPhone in 2027 or Ever

"Siri, play Fetty Wap in Spotify," I say, staring at the Spotify page for the rapper on my iPhone at a work space in a coffee shop."I'm sorry," iPhone Siri replies through my AirPods. "I didn't quite catch that."I repeat myself only for Siri on the MacBook on the desk in front of me to understand and start playing music for all to hear."Siri, stop," I say and the music stops coming from my laptop and peace is restored. iPhone Siri doesn't say a thing, perhaps ashamed of itself -- if a digital assistant can feel shame.MacBook Siri technically worked but I didn't want MacBook Siri to work, I wanted iPhone Siri to work. If I had just tapped the play button on my iPhone, I wouldn't have endured this comedic misadventure.During Apple's 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference presentation, it touted upgrades to Apple's digital assistant Siri through Apple Intelligence. However, according to Bloomberg, a radically updated Siri might not arrive until 11 months after that announcement and we might have to wait until 2027 for Siri to truly get more conversational with iOS 19. Hey Siri, please don't embarrass me in front of the barista. CNETBased on my experience in the coffee shop (and my experience with Siri in general) my thoughts were: whatever. If a more conversational Siri landed on my iPhone this instant I wouldn't use Siri more. I'd try to find a way to use the digital assistant less than I already do.Apple integrated Siri into iPhones in 2011 and the company has been updating the digital assistant ever since. While Apple has brought more capabilities to Siri -- like third-party app integration -- it's still plagued by issues whenever I use it.And therein lies my main issue with Siri: When Siri makes a mistake, I feel like I wasted time doing something I could have done faster and more efficiently myself.Sure, Siri can make phone calls while I'm driving but that could lead to distracted driving.According to the National Highway Safety Administration, distracted driving is any activity -- texting, eating or talking with people on the phone -- that can divert your attention from driving. The administration reports that distracted driving caused more than 3,000 deaths in 2022, the most recent year for which data is available. While none of those deaths were directly attributed to using voice assistants, I still don't want to use Siri in a way that could put myself and others in danger. My solution is to never use Siri. It's clunky and I don't need to use it to do basic tasks on my iPhone. I haven't been impressed with ChatGPT's Siri integration. Apple/Screenshot by CNETSiri's clunky nature is a known issue among some Apple engineers, according to a report from The New York Times. In the report, John Burkey, a former Apple engineer who worked on Siri, likened Siri to "one big snowball," saying whenever Siri gets an addition it has to be rebuilt. Burkey said in the report that this means there's no way for Siri to function as a creative assistant, such as ChatGPT or other AI tools. But now that Apple has a partnership with OpenAI and ChatGPT is more integrated into Siri on some devices in iOS 18.2, that shouldn't be a problem, right? Maybe, but I've already run into issues with ChatGPT on my iPhone. When I used ChatGPT in iOS 18.2, I asked it to give me instructions on how to brew a cup of coffee but the instructions told me to measure out my coffee grounds before grinding any beans. I asked it again and got a more straightforward answer with appropriately ordered steps. There's a disclaimer at the bottom of these ChatGPT requests: "Check important info for mistakes." But if I'm using a digital assistant such as ChatGPT, I shouldn't have to check for mistakes. That's the whole reason I'm using a digital assistant in the first place. I don't check to make sure an answer from a calculator is correct and I shouldn't have to figure out when ChatGPT is wrong. So if I already have issues with Siri being inefficient and ChatGPT can be helpful only part of the time, why should I use it? If I wanted to get frustrated while using my phone I would have kept my Blackberry Curve from a decade ago. I just want whatever phone I have to work.So Apple, take all the time you need to update Siri and make it more conversational or scrap the plan altogether. Thankfully, I don't have to use Siri or ChatGPT on my iPhone for it to work well. It already does without those features. For more on Apple, here's what you need to know about the iPhone 16E and the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. You can also check out an expert's guide to iOS 18.
