Possible Final Fantasy 9 remake announcement linked to Switch 2 revealGameCentralPublished March 31, 2025 6:02pmUpdated March 31, 2025 6:02pm Final Fantasy 9 will 25 years old in July (Square Enix)Square Enix is putting a lot of effort into promoting the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9, as hopes of a remake reveal this week increase.If youre a third party publisher with a new game to announce then there arent going to be many better opportunities this year, than at the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct on Wednesday.The eyes of the gaming world will all be fixed on that one point and its very likely that it will see a number of new game reveals that are actually multiformat (assuming the Direct covers anything other than first party Nintendo games, which isnt a given).There is already some new circumstantial evidence to suggest that one publisher is getting ready for a big annoucement and that it may be the long-rumoured Final Fantasy 9 remake.The original Final Fantasy 9 was released in 2000 and was the last of the mainline entries on the PS1. Rumours of a remake go back to 2021, but despite constant talk of its existence its never properly leaked.Despite the constant rumours, theres never been any real detail about the remake but hopes have risen again this week, with the launch of a 25th anniversary website and a bunch of new merchandise.Considering some games can see important anniversaries pass by without even a mention, thats quite a big effort for what is not generally regarded as one of the most popular entries in the series.The merch, which includes various action figures, plushies, and the like will be released this summer, but theres no mention on the website of a remake just the anniversary date of July 7.The rumours are not just random 4chan chatter but come from respected insiders, including Jason Schreier and NateTheHate.Also, the original leak mentioned a number of other Square Enix games, all of which have later been officially announced, including difficult to predict titles like a Chrono Cross remaster.More TrendingNone of that means a Final Fantasy 9 remake is definitely happening but if it was announced at the Nintendo Direct on Wednesday it wouldnt be a complete surprise.In terms of the scope of the game, the subject has already been broached by Naoki Yoshida, aka Yoshi-P, director of Final Fantasy 14, although still without confirming that a remake is going ahead.He raised doubts as to whether Final Fantasy 9 could be remade with modern visuals in a single release, implying it would need multiple.Considering that, despite critical acclaim, Final Fantasy 7 has not done quite as well as Square Enix hoped its difficult to imagine them expending similar resources on Final Fantasy 9 but, well maybe well find out for sure on Wednesday.
