MTA debuts new retro-inspired Subway map
Design nerds and amateur cartographers alike are rejoicing over the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA)s new updated map of the subway system in New York City. It is said to be a replica of the 1972 Unimark map that left an impression despite its mere five-year tenure. The new map debuts the same year as the planned phasing out of the iconic yellow MetroCards that have been around since 1993. The MTA is currently about $48 billion in debt. Its chairman, Janno Lieber, told the New York Times, "This is a linchpin moment, like in 1979, when we started to fix the subway system."
