March Architecture Billings Index drops again while 'healthy' project backlog remains
The latest AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index (ABI) for March has shown the effects of continued business challenges, including the threat of new tariffs, at firms across the country. The new ABI for March was 44.1, down from February’s total of 45.5. This indicates that most firms are still experiencing a decline in billings.
The ABI has now posted declines for 27 out of the last 30 months. This includes the past two months of consecutive declines for inquiries into new projects overall, while the values for newly signed design contracts have also declined for what is now the 13th month in a row.
"Clients are increasingly cautious about starting projects due to uncertainty over future trends in interest rates and building materials costs, as well as the potential for an economic slowdown," Kermit Baker, the AIA Chief Economist, stated.
