Why Trust Us?I spent a lot of weekends of my childhood at my grandparent's, and while I fondly remember so much about those days, but one particularly vivid memory is simply of climbing in bed after a busy day of canning beans, playing in the garden, and throwing tea parties. My grandmother was pretty religious about switching bedding out for each season, and there was nothing like climbing in the bed draped with light linens after a warm bath on a summer night. Little did I know at the time, her go-to summer blanket was a pretty common bed linen for her generation—a matelassé cover. I fear that we as a culture lost the practice of switching our bedding over for each season, so matelassé blankets became a relic of the past. But I've seen them crop back up recently, especially with the resurgence of grandma's popularity (she really is so cool). Not a quilt but not a blanket, a matelassé is somewhere in between. While a matelassé cover might look similar to a quilt, it doesn't feature the layers of batting and fabric that a quilt does, and instead is just a single material with an incredibly intricate weave. Matelassé covers are lightweight and breathable, providing a bit more heft than a simple blanket without the chance of trapping heat with any batting. I see exactly why my grandmother loved them so much: they're the ideal bed linen for a Mississippi summer. I knew she was right about so many things in life, so I'll add this one to the list and purchase my own matelassé cover to get me through the hot Southern summer months. 1Better Homes & Gardens Paisley Matelasse Quilt$55 at WalmartWhile I'm all for investing in great bedding, you might not want to spend a lot on linens you'll only use part of the year, and that's totally fine!
