EDI Effetti Digitali Italiani Delivers 100 VFX Shots for ‘The Killer’s Game’
EDI Effetti Digitali Italiani has shared with AWN and VFXWorld a VFX breakdown reel of their work on Lionsgate’s action comedy, The Killer’s Game, which stars Dave Bautista, Sofia Boutella and Ben Kingsley. The Italian visual effects studio, which recently won an Emmy Award for its work on the Netflix series, Ripley, delivered 100 visual effects shots on the film that included various explosions, gunshots, and lots of blood. The film tells the story of a hitman, diagnosed with a terminal illness, who must face an army of fellow killers and win back the love of his life before it’s too late. Directed by J.J. Perry and based on the novel of the same name by Jay Bonansinga, The Killer’s Game released in U.S. theaters last Fall and is now available on STARZ and Prime Video. The VFX team, led by supervisor Gaia Bussolati along with Marco Russo, worked to emphasize “dynamic and spectacular action scenes, steeped in fights with a splatter epilogue.” “In most scenes there is blood, and our task was to make the splashes of individual wounds in addition to the wound itself,” Bussolati explains. “This means that the prosthetic work had to be combined before, during and after the cut. The scenes had such rapid choreography that there was no possibility of staining clothes or the weapon. Among the most complex sequences they delivered was one in which a girl was pushed against a row of broken glass, where they had to reconstruct the shards of glass that splashed along with the sprays of blood. Another noteworthy sequence was in the scene where a weapon is stuck in a hitman's head. The team also created numerous gunshots, as well as explosions, including the destruction of a black van culminating in pink-colored smoke.
