Fate of Tadao Ando’s MPavilion hangs in the balance amid claims it can't be moved
The future of Tadao Ando’s record-shattering 2023-25 MPavilion may be in doubt after The Art Newspaper reported on a looming June decision by officials in the city of Melbourne, where the 10th commission has remained in limbo since having its public phase viewing extended by one year last April. Despite its initial claims of being a fully demountable structure, the city says Ando’s only completed design in the Southern Hemisphere is in fact "not relocatable." The concrete pavilion had set attendance records, which was part of the justification for its extension.
Neither Ando nor the MPavilion Commission's founder, philanthropist Naomi Milgrom, has made a public statement related to its future placement.
