In Seoul lies a sprawling circular piece of public furniture that was designed using a computer algorithm. The structure, called Root Bench, was designed by Yong Ju Lee Architecture and is the reinterpretation of a winning proposal in the Hangang Art Competition.Image: Kyungsub ShinWith a diameter of approximately 98 feet, the project takes the shape of a root spreading throughout the surrounding park. It allows visitors to lean, sit, or lie across its “roots”, which are elevated at different heights.

In order to get the effect of the branches spreading out, a reaction-diffusion system was applied to the design process.
