Netflixs live-action series One Piece is based on Japans highest-selling manga series by Elichiro Oda. Chu is a ruthless pirate and a fish man with deadly spitting powers seen in Series 1. Dreamsmith was asked to create a full body prosthetic based on the manga character and Jaco Snyman explains the process: Taking the character from the manga into the real world, we sculpted Chu in ZBrush to see what it could look like as a real person. With the blockout design approved, we needed to run some tests to see how big we could make the characters fish mouth. Referencing the manga characters huge mouth, we sculpted prosthetic lips in skin color and tested them out on actor Len-Barry Simons to see how big we could make them without interfering with his speech and expressions. It worked really well and we had a lot of fun. We incorporated the final design into the digital sculpture, which was then made into a mold system. Once cast in silicon, painted and applied to the actor, it looked fantastic. Read more about the project: https://maxonvfx.com/4h5bEp6
