MacworldI recently mused about how the Mac lineup has been the most compelling for a while, and one of the reasons is that Apple introduced worthwhile features besides the chip upgrade to the M4. For the M4 MacBook Pro, theres one more feature that Apple hasnt mentioned at all.According to display expert Ross Young, Apple now uses a quantum dot film in the MacBook Pros LiquidRetina XDR display. This QD film replaces a KSF phosphor film (also known as a narrow-band red phosphor) placed between the backlight and the display. The result is that the MacBook Pros display creates a more consistent color gamut and better motion performance. So why the switch now? Apple hasnt talked about this so its mere speculation, but based on Youngs post, it appears that Apple wasnt satisfied with QD films previous performance. Why didnt Apple mention this change? Most likely because its the kind of under-the-hood change that wont factor much into a buying decision. But its a notable change that shows how Apple continues to improve its high-end devices without raising costs.Itll be interesting to see if Apple adopts QD film for the M4 MacBook Air, which uses an LED display, instead of the mini-LED display in the MacBook Pro. Reports say that the new Air will be revealed in the spring of 2025 and its expected to be nothing more than a chip upgrade.
