McKinsey: drastic heat pumps expansion vital for decarbonizing building sector by 2050
According to a new study by McKinsey, the number of heat pumps worldwide still needs to increase significantly in magnitude from its current 15% global market share to 65% by 2050 in order to meet climate targets. The governments of the UK, Germany, and Sweden have all been proactive at making the technologies both more affordable and less cost-prohibitive to install. Still, according to McKinsey, challenges to the further adaptation of air-source heat pump alternatives persist primarily in cold-weather climates, which currently account for 15% of the global population.
