Industrial Design Case Study: A Carry-On Roller that Transforms Into a Stroller

This TernX invention solves a highly specific problem for parents. Specifically, parents traveling with small children. Like wheelchairs, strollers have to be checked in as luggage; this leads to stress at the luggage conveyor, as there's a chance the stroller may arrive damaged or worse, not arrive at all.Australian couple Tak and Hoe Ping, who frequently traveled with their kids, thus invented the TernX. It's a stroller that transforms into a carry-on, allowing it to fit in the overhead bin. And despite its stroller functionality, it still provides a modicum of storage space (18 liters, or about 4 gallons). Impressively, it was designed for a parent to be able to unfurl it one-handed, while holding a baby:While the Pings invented it, they didn't actually design it; that task fell to industrial designer Andrew Crawford and his team at Tricycle Developments, an ID and engineering consultancy based in Melbourne. While Tricycle doesn't have the project listed as a case study on their site, thankfully TV show Europe ByDesign did a down under episode where they featured the project. Here's industrial designer Crawford describing the technical challenges they need to solve: So great to see a TV show where the host says "So you thought you had a good idea, but you needed some industrial design grunts to flush it out" and then they actually take to you to the studio.
