Samsung unveils 98-inch 8K LCD TV with RGB microLED backlighting
What just happened? Another TV has been unveiled at CES that is expected to be as technologically stunning as it is expensive (i.e., extremely). Samsung has shown off a prototype 98-inch LCD 8K television that uses an RGB microLED backlight, which offers several advantages over miniLED backlighting. Samsung showed off a display labeled RGB Micro LED at its First Look event the day before CES began, reports FlatpanelsHD. However, Samsung has been producing microLED TVs for years, most of which are very large and stunningly expensive. The reason why this particular TV was on display was because it's the first LCD TV that uses microLED backlighting. Compared to miniLED backlighting, it features at least three times more LEDs, meaning increased brightness, a larger number of dimming zones, and better energy efficiency.Courtesy of FlatpanelsHDYesterday, Hisense revealed the 116-inch UX TV. It said the RGB miniLED backlighting offers improved luminance and color accuracy compared to standard miniLED TVs. TCL is also introducing the same technology this year. Samsung says its RGB microLED version is even better.TV technology moves fast. Samsung wants to release its 8K RGB microLED TV this year. The company has just revealed its flagship QN990F, an 8K NEO QLED that it calls its most advanced television to date. It's unclear if the RGB microLED TV will sit above that model on its product stack. // Related StoriesSamsung has long been releasing enormous, comically expensive full microLED sets, such as The Wall, a 146-inch modular TV that was available in a 292-inch version in 2019. The Korean giant made a more living room-friendly 75-inch microLED TV a year later, followed by a 110-inch version in 2020. There has also been an 89-inch model. In May, Samsung launched a 114-inch microLED television (above) that cost $150,000 in the US. It was so expensive that Samsung sold it bundled with an $8,000 8K TV.MicroLED TVs have several advantages over OLED, including brighter colors, being more power-efficient, faster response times, and improved brightness. Samsung's new RGB microLED backlit set won't have all these benefits, but it will be cheaper than the company's current $110,000 89-inch microLED model. A $40,000+ price tag is still likely, though.
