The sci-fi series is set in the near future where technological advancements allow people to "sever" the memories of their work life from their personal life. The benefit for people who undergo the procedure is that they live their lives without ever remembering working (or other unpleasant things, as the show slowly begins to reveal). But in practice, this means that severed people are effectively two people--they're one person in regular life, an "outie," and a second person, or "innie," at work, because the work version of them never experiences anything but work. It's like falling asleep the second you step out of the office and waking up the second you step back in.
