This law aims to prevent any company from gaining an unfair competitive advantage in digital industries. The law officially went into effect on January 1, 2025.The current investigation against Google is focused on its search services. It will seek to determine whether Google has strategic market status (SMS). In case it does, several changes will be imposed on how the company runs business in the country.Note: SMS refers to those companies that have a turnover of more than 1 billion in the UK or more than 25 billion annually globally.Googles dominant position in the country has become a matter of concern for the authorities. More than 90% of all general queries in the UK are directed through Google.
