Preserving Auto Design Classics Through Electrification
www.core77.com
Throughout the history of automotive design, the UK has produced a number of classics whose like we'll not see again: The Aston Martin DB6, the Jaguar XK120, the Bentley Continental. For posterity's sake it's desirable to preserve surviving examples. British company Lunaz does just that, but rather than put the cars in a museum, converts them to EVs. Like America's Icon 4x4, the company adds electric powertrains and upgrades the mechanicals to modern-day standards, while perfectly preserving the exterior design. The overall goal is "to marry cutting-edge technology and exceptional driving dynamics with the style of an era when beauty was the only requirement," says company Founder & CEO David Lorenz. Their customers, the company reckons, "represent a new generation of first-time classic owners who will play a critical role in the preservation of the world's most celebrated examples of automotive design." They're not doing this for charity, of course; the client base is rich folk from the UK, US, Europe, Middle East and South Asia. The cars are brought down to bare metal to start, then the client provides feedback to the in-house design team over the 5,500-hour restoration process. "Each restored, elevated, and electrified car undergoes an exhaustive bare-metal restoration and re-engineering process, delivering a concours-level vehicle that meets modern expectations for usability, reliability, and sustainability." "Driveability is enhanced through upgraded brakes, suspension, and steering, while interior comfort is brought up to contemporary standards with air conditioning, discreetly integrated infotainment, navigation systems, and full Wi-Fi connectivity." Lunaz's vehicles feature fast-charging capability and can deliver a range up to 200 miles. As a reminder of how many rich people there are in the world, the company has seen 150% export growth year-on-year since their founding in 2018. They're booked out into 2026. Plenty of eye candy on their Instagram.
