(Photo by Michael Kovac/Getty Images for Vanity Fair)Getty Images for Vanity FairIn this weeks episode of billionaire deathmatch, Elon Musk attempts a $97.4 billion hostile takeover of OpenAI the multi-billion developer of ChatGPT in an effort to snatch control of the company from CEO Sam Altman. The unsolicited bid presents yet another escalation in the ongoing conflict between Musk and Altman, stemming back to the Tesla chiefs departure from OpenAI, which he helped co-found in 2015.It also throws a spanner in the works for Altmans plans to convert OpenAIs structure to a for-profit amidst other big-time moves, including efforts to raise up to $40 billion at a $340 billion valuation, plans to manufacture AI chips in-house and ambitions to build a $500-billion AI infrastructure.Musk is purportedly leading a consortium of big wig investors including Valor Equity Partners, Baron Capital, Endeavor CEO Ari Emmanuel and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.A Clash Of Visions For OpenAIs FutureAt the heart of the disagreement between Musk and Altman is the latters push to turn OpenAI into a for-profit entity, which could compromise the companys focus on developing safe and transparent AI solutions. Its time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was, Musk said in a statement provided by his attorney Marc Toberoff. We will make sure that happens.Shortly after the news broke, Altman fired back on X with a cheeky response. No, thank you, he said. But we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.Thats quite a deliberate dig from Altman. For one, Musk paid $44 billion to acquire X formerly Twitter back in late 2023. The second diss, obviously, is referring to X by its former name. Lets be honest, though: we all do that anyways.Musk is also working on his own AI effort with xAI, which directly competes with OpenAI.Musk Vs. Altman: A Storied Rivalry For Dominion Over OpenAIThats not where the skirmish between the two founders ends, though.Musk is currently suing OpenAI for allegedly straying from its original vision to develop AI for the common good. OpenAI, for its part, has called the lawsuit a blusterous campaign to harass OpenAI for his own competitive advantage.Without a doubt, Musks latest move is only going to heat up his ongoing battle with Altman. Whether the bid will slow down OpenAIs AI acceleration aspirations is yet to be seen. In any case though, the competition isnt waiting.
