Tri-Union Seafoods, a California-based seafood company, has recalled numerous canned tuna products due to a "manufacturing defect" in the easy-pull tab.The defect "may compromise the integrity of the product seal (especially over time), causing it to leak, or worse, be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, which can lead to a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, the company announced in an alert shared by the Food and Drug Administration.Clostridium botulinum is the bacteria that can cause botulism, a rare but possibly fatal illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, botulism can cause "difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and even death" and is considered a medical emergency.The recalled products were sold under the brand names Genova, Van Camp's, H-E-B and Trader Joe's and were distributed in numerous states.
