From insurers to clinics, every player in the ecosystem handles some form of sensitive information. However, breaches do not always originate from hospitals or health apps.     Our first look at Enchanted by Nature, the new expansion coming to The Sims 4 next month, has officially arrived. Maxis and EA previously confirmed that the first trailer would be dropping today, before we get a deep look at gameplay on June 26.
    This is the game’s first major expansion since Businesses & Hobbies arrived in March, and as the name suggests, adds nature-inspired content.

    The major reveal, of course, is the long-anticipated return of fairies to The Sims, and it looks as though plenty of notes have been taken from their extremely well-received debut as a playable occult type back in The Sims 3. We all kind of saw that one coming though, since EA are surely too canny to blatantly tease Simmers with a popular returning feature only to pull the rug out.
    More unexpectedly, it seems that your Sims will soon be able to reject indoor life entirely by foraging for their meals, wild bathing, and sleeping out under the stars. All fun and games until they run afoul of one of several new and interesting ailments being introduced in the pack; fortunately, treating said ailments with traditional remedies also seems to have a big role to play as part of the new Apothecary... crafting type? Skill? Career? We'll surely find out more in that gameplay trailer, due out later this month.
    All of this takes place the new world of Innisgreen, which is partially inspired by Ireland, but only if you squint through a heavy layer of folklore and fantasy theming. It's definitely more Hobbiton than 21st century hometown for the most part, unless our Irish cousins have started living in whimsical treehouses and neglected to tell us; although one neighbourhood does seem to be based on the more down-to-earth setting of Cobh, County Cork — home of the famous "Deck of Cards" painted houses.

Though the expansion itself doesn’t arrive until July 10, the limited-time event, Nature’s Calling, kicks off June 24 to set the scene for what’s to come. Then, on July 1, the game’s next update will arrive, bringing with it more nature-themed skins and other customisation options.
    This is all part of The Sims 4’s June-August roadmap, which developer Maxis outlined just last week. The roadmap also revealed another major update is scheduled for August 19, itself adding even more customisation options to the game.
    Next up, of course, is the proper Enchanted by Nature gameplay reveal, which takes place just two weeks from now, on Thursday, June 26.

  • Government ditches public sector decarbonisation scheme

    The government has axed a scheme for upgrading energy efficiency in public sector buildings.
    The Public Sector Decarbonisation Schemedelivered more than £2.5bn in its first three phases for measures such as heat pumps, solar panels, insulation and double glazing, with further funding of nearly £1bn recently announced.
    But the Department for Energy Security and Net Zerohas told Building Design that the scheme has been dropped after the spending review, leaving uncertainty about how upgrades will be funded when the current phase expires in 2028.

    In a post on LinkedIn, Dave Welkin, director of sustainability at Gleeds, said he had waited for the release of the spending review with a “sense of trepidation” and was unable to find mention of public sector decarbonisation when Treasury documents were released.
    “I hoped because it was already committed in the Budget that its omission wasn’t ominous,” he wrote.
    Yesterday, he was told by Salix Finance, the non-departmental public body that delivers funding for the scheme, that it was no longer being funded.
    It comes after the withdrawal of funding for the Low Carbon Skills Fundin May.
    According to the government’s website, PSDS and LCSF were intended to support the reduction of emissions from public sector buildings by 75% by 2037, compared to a 2017 baseline.
    “Neither LCSF or PSDS were perfect by any means, but they did provide a vital source of funding for local authorities, hospitals, schools and many other public sector organisations to save energy, carbon and money,” Welkin said.
    “PSDS has helped replace failed heating systems in schools, keeping students warm. It’s replaced roofs on hospitals, helping patients recover from illness. It’s replaced windows in our prisons, improving security and stopping drugs getting behind bars.”
    However, responding to Welkin’s post, Steve Connolly, chief executive at Arriba Technologies, a low carbon heating and cooling firm, said that the scheme was being “mismanaged” with a small number of professional services firms “scooping up disproportionately large grants for their clients”.
    The fourth phase of the scheme was confirmed last September, with allocations confirmed only last month.
    This latest phase, which covers the financial years between 2025/26 and 2027/28, saw the distribution of £940m across the country.
    A DESNZ spokesperson said: “Our settlement is about investing in Britain’s renewal to create energy security, sprint to clean power by 2030, encourage investment, create jobs and bring down bills for good.
    “We will deliver £1bn in current allocations of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme until 2028 and, through Great British Energy, have invested in new rooftop solar power and renewable schemes to lower energy bills for schools and hospitals across the UK.
    “We want to build on this progress by incentivising the public sector to decarbonise, so they can reap the benefits in lower bills and emissions, sharing best practice across government and exploring the use of repayable finance, where appropriate.”
    A government assessment of phase 3a and 3b projects identified a number of issues with the scheme, including delays and cost inflation, with more than a tenth being abandoned subsequent to grants being offered.
    Stakeholders interviewed for the report also identified “difficulties in obtaining skilled contractors and equipment”, especially air source heat pumps.
    The first come first served approach to awarding funding was also said to be “encouraging applicants to opt for more straightforward projects” and “potentially undermining the achievement of PSDS objective by restricting the opportunity for largermore complex measures which may have delivered greater carbon reduction benefits”.
    But the consensus among stakeholders and industry representatives interviewed for the report was that the scheme was “currently key to sustaining the existing UK heat pump market” and that it was “seen as vital in enabling many public sector organisations to invest in heat decarbonisation”.

    The recently released Windows 11 Dev and Beta builds introduced some welcome changes and improvements. However, those preview builds are not flawless and have a pretty long list of known issues. One of those issues, though, is a rather delightful one: Windows 11's default startup jingle has been accidentally replaced with one from 2006.
    After Windows Insiders discovered that Windows 11 now plays the Windows Vista startup sound and reported it to Microsoft, the company acknowledged it and added it to the list of known bugs in the latest Windows 11 Dev and Beta builds:

    This week’s flight comes with a delightful blast from the past and will play the Windows Vista boot sound instead of the Windows 11 boot sound. We’re working on a fix.

    Although Windows Vista is nearly two decades old, it was brought to everyone's attention this week after Apple introduced macOS 26 Tahoe with its controversial "Liquid Glass" redesign, which many consider a rather miserable remix of Windows Aero from Windows Vista and Windows 7.
    While it is definitely an interesting coincidence, Microsoft did not intentionally replace the startup sound in Windows 11 preview builds. Brandon LeBlanc from the Windows Insider team confirmed in his X that that is a bug after joking about everyone talking about Windows Vista once again in light of Apple's latest announcements:

    It is worth noting that if you miss the startup sound of Windows Vista, you can still use it in modern Windows versions.     Alphabet-owned robotaxi company Waymo is limiting service due to Saturday’s scheduled nationwide “No Kings” protests against President Donald Trump and his policies.
    A Waymo spokesperson confirmed the changes to Wired on Friday. Service is reportedly affected in San Francisco, Austin, Atlanta, and Phoenix, and is entirely suspended in Los Angeles. It’s not clear how long the limited service will last.
    As part of protests last weekend in Los Angeles against the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, five Waymo vehicles were set on fire and spray painted with anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcementmessages. In response, Waymo suspended service in downtown LA.

    This makes sense since they want to have good performance on lower end machines and they mentioned that it was easier to scale up than to scale down. They also mentioned their legacy on PC and how they plan on scaling it up high like they usually do on PC.

    Maybe off topic, but is 30fps target not so important anymore for 2027 industry-leading graphics? GTA is mainly doing it for design/physics/etc. whch is why the game can't be scaled down to 720-900p/60fps?

    It will be a full port a few years after like The Witcher 3., they don't use software lumen here. I doubt the Switch 2 Raytracing capaclity is high enough to use the same pipeline to produce the Switch 2 version.

    EDIT: And they probably need to redo all the assets.

    Fortnite doesn't use Nanite and Lumen on Switch 2.

    Graphics are the part of the game that can be scaled, it is CPU load that is the more difficult part, although devs have actually made cuts in the latter to increase performance mode fps viability. Even with this focus on 60fps performance modes, they are always going to have room to make a higher fidelity 30fps mode. Specifically with UE5 though, performance has been such a disaster all around and Epic seems to be taking it seriously now.

    And yet people keep talking about somehow getting PS6 games to work on the sony portable, which is probably going to be like half as powerful as a PS5, like that won't hold games back

    There is kinda a misconception of how Lumen and the hybrid RT is handled in UE5 titles. AO is also part of the ray traced pipeline through the HW Lumen too.
    Just shadows are handled separately from the RT system by using VSM which in final look behvae quite like RT shadows in shape, same how FF16 handled the shadows looking like RT ones while it isn't traced.
    UE5 can still trace shadows if they want to push things even further.

    Yes indirect shadows are handled by hardware lumen. But at the end ot doesn¡t change my comment. i think the game will be 600´720p at 30 fps on Series S.

    Yes. I am sure Series S will have HW solution but probably at 30 FPS. that would be a miracle if they achieve 60 FPS.

    Fortnite not using Lumen or Nanite at launch doesn't mean they can't run well on Switch 2. It's a launch port and they prioritized clean IQ and 60fps. I wouldn't be surprised to see them added later. Also it's not like the ray tracing in a Witcher 3 port has to match PS5, there's a lot of scaling back that can be done with ray tracing without ripping out the kitchen sink. Software lumen is also likely to be an option on P.

    why? dev can make it 30 fps on series s and 60 fps on series x if needed.

    if they aren't or don't have to drop it for gta vi, they probably ain't dropping it for tw4.

    No the consoles won't hold back your 5090 because the game is created with hardware lumen, RT reflection, virtual shadows maps and Nanite plus Nanite vegetation in minds. Maybe Nanite character too in final version?

    If the game was made with software lumen as the base it would have holding back your 5090...

    Your PC will have much better IQ, framerate and better raytracing with Megalightand better raytracing settings in general.

    ? they said that 60 FPS on Series S is challenging, not the act of releasing the game there at all. The game can simply run at 30 FPS on Series S if they can't pull off 60 FPS. Or have a 40 FPS mode in lieu of 60 FPS.

    The CPU and storage speed differences between last gen and current gen were gigantic. This isn't even remotely close to a comparable situation.

    Ah yes, clearly 5090 cards are the vast majority of the minimum requirements for PC games.

    How can anyone say this with a straight face anymore when there are now PC games running on a Steam Deck.

    At least ppl saying that about the Series S are comparing it to other consoles.

Graphics are the part of the game that can be scaled, it is CPU load that is the more difficult part, although devs have actually made cuts in the latter to increase performance mode fps viability. Even with this focus on 60fps performance modes, they are always going to have room to make a higher fidelity 30fps mode. Fortnite not using Lumen or Nanite at launch doesn't mean they can't run well on Switch 2. It's a launch port and they prioritized clean IQ and 60fps. I wouldn't be surprised to see them added later. Also it's not like the ray tracing in a Witcher 3 port has to match PS5, there's a lot of scaling back that can be done with ray tracing without ripping out the kitchen sink. The hubris they display suggests they don’t understand how AI is fundamentally changing how people use and build software.Heading into the keynote on Monday, everyone knew not to expect the revamped Siri that had been promised the previous year. Apple, to its credit, acknowledged that it dropped the ball there, and it sounds like a large language model rebuild of Siri is very much underway and coming in 2026.The AI industry moves much faster than Apple’s release schedule, though. By the time Siri is perhaps good enough to keep pace, it will have to contend with the lock-in that OpenAI and others are building through their memory features. Apple and OpenAI are currently partners, but both companies want to ultimately control the interface for interacting with AI, which puts them on a collision course. Apple’s decision to let developers use its own, on-device foundational models for free in their apps sounds strategically smart, but unfortunately, the models look far from leading. Apple ran its own benchmarks, which aren’t impressive, and has confirmed a measly context window of 4,096 tokens. It’s also saying that the models will be updated alongside its operating systems — a snail’s pace compared to how quickly AI companies move. I’d be surprised if any serious developers use these Apple models, although I can see them being helpful to indie devs who are just getting started and don’t want to spend on the leading cloud models. I don’t think most people care about the privacy angle that Apple is claiming as a differentiator; they are already sharing their darkest secrets with ChatGPT and other assistants. Some of the new Apple Intelligence features I demoed this week were impressive, such as live language translation for calls. Mostly, I came away with the impression that the company is heavily leaning on its ChatGPT partnership as a stopgap until Apple Intelligence and Siri are both where they need to be. AI probably isn’t a near-term risk to Apple’s business. No one has shipped anything close to the contextually aware Siri that was demoed at last year’s WWDC. People will continue to buy Apple hardware for a long time, even after Sam Altman and Jony Ive announce their first AI device for ChatGPT next year. AR glasses aren’t going mainstream anytime soon either, although we can expect to see more eyewear from Meta, Google, and Snap over the coming year. In aggregate, these AI-powered devices could begin to siphon away engagement from the iPhone, but I don’t see people fully replacing their smartphones for a long time. The bigger question after this week is whether Apple has what it takes to rise to the occasion and culturally reset itself for the AI era. I would have loved to hear Tim Cook address this issue directly, but the only interview he did for WWDC was a cover story in Variety about the company’s new F1 movie.ElsewhereAI agents are coming. I recently caught up with Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi ahead of his company’s annual developer conference this week in San Francisco. Given Databricks’ position, he has a unique, bird’s-eye view of where things are headed for AI. He doesn’t envision a near-term future where AI agents completely automate real-world tasks, but he does predict a wave of startups over the next year that will come close to completing actions in areas such as travel booking. He thinks humans will needto approve what an agent does before it goes off and completes a task. “We have most of the airplanes flying automated, and we still want pilots in there.”Buyouts are the new normal at Google. That much is clear after this week’s rollout of the “voluntary exit program” in core engineering, the Search organization, and some other divisions. In his internal memo, Search SVP Nick Fox was clear that management thinks buyouts have been successful in other parts of the company that have tried them. In a separate memo I saw, engineering exec Jen Fitzpatrick called the buyouts an “opportunity to create internal mobility and fresh growth opportunities.” Google appears to be attempting a cultural reset, which will be a challenging task for a company of its size. We’ll see if it can pull it off. Evan Spiegel wants help with AR glasses. I doubt that his announcement that consumer glasses are coming next year was solely aimed at AR developers. Telegraphing the plan and announcing that Snap has spent billion on hardware to date feels more aimed at potential partners that want to make a bigger glasses play, such as Google. A strategic investment could help insulate Snap from the pain of the stock market. A full acquisition may not be off the table, either.
