Titled the Center for Innovation and Active Citizenship, the building honors the school’s founder’s vision as an educator, abolitionist, advocate for the outdoors, and innovator in curriculum and student development. The new building, which integrates seamlessly into the campus established in 1850, introduces a contemporary expression while maintaining the scale and integrity of its surrounding context.The architects reinterpreted the local typology of a contemporary farmhouse for the new building and organized the program into three pavilions. This approach allowed different functions to be distinguished while also reducing the building’s perceived scale in relation to neighboring historic structures. The wooded and rocky nature of the site, along with the vernacular architecture of the campus and surrounding region, inspired the project’s materiality. The architects focused on a simple palette, uniform colors, and treated materials. The landscape around the building was also redesigned, introducing new circulation paths connecting the campus’s two primary open spaces. Outcroppings of rock and mature trees defined the building footprint and were left untouched during construction. Trees that had to be felled were reclaimed and used to create interior seating and custom tables for the project.The program of the building allows cross-pollination of different activities, as spaces transition from purpose-built areas like physics, biology, and chemistry labs to flexible spaces like shared flex classrooms, the Entrepreneurship Center, and the Center for Just Democracy. The sensible approach to massing, program relationships, and landscape was also carried through to the building technologies, as it minimizes environmental impact through the use of solar photovoltaic panels and a geothermal well field, which provides the majority of heating and cooling. Figma prototypes have been the go-to for years. For digital product designers crafting clickable mockups of apps, this powerhouse design platform hasn’t just gained popularity—it’s become the indispensable tool of choice.  Nearly every app, website, or digital experience that didn’t make you rage-quit was likely prototyped and rigorously tested in Figma before a single pixel was coded. The platform’s dominance is no accident.  Figma prototypes help product teams communicate direction, test early ideas, and align stakeholders around what’s being built. At design consultancies like ours, they’ve played a critical role in due diligence where we stress-test client concepts before writing a single line of code—saving countless development hours and budget dollars.  All of that is important, because the first version of any design is usually wrong. It’s based on assumptions about what users want or how they’ll behave. And if you ship based on those assumptions, you risk launching a broken experience that tanks in the market. That’s why prototyping for validation has been industry standard. And Figma has been the undisputed champion in the game the past 5+ years.  But with the blistering pace of AI, we may be approaching the end of the clickable prototype era as we know it.  AI can do more  Until now, prototypes were the fastest way to go from idea to experience. But new AI tools are starting to change that because they can:  Generate user interface (UI) from a single prompt. UI is what you see and interact with on a screen, like buttons, menus, and layouts.  Simulate logic, state, and user paths. This shows how a digital product would work—how it reacts to choices, keeps track of information, and guides users through different steps.  Auto-populate realistic data and content. This instantly fills in a design with lifelike text, names, images, or numbers to show how it would look and feel in context.  Create testable product flows. AI tools can do this without manually connecting screens, letting you quickly explore how a user would move through the product. We’re not talking about wireframes anymore. We’re talking about high-fidelity simulations that look and feel like real software. Tiny testbeds for behavior. And they’re being spun up in actual seconds.  Instead of designing screens, we’re starting to describe outcomes. We’re shaping intent—and AI is helping us fill in the rest.  This is not just a faster way to prototype. It is a leap forward in how we go from an idea to something you can touch, click, and test. But make no mistake, it’s not replacing designers. Instead, it’s shifting their role—freeing them from repetitive tasks so they can focus on what really matters: understanding users, shaping strategy, and making sure the experience is not just functional, but human.  Communicate a vibe, not visuals  There’s a new term floating around in product circles: vibe coding. It’s the idea that instead of specifying exactly how something should look or function, we start by telling the AI the feeling we want a product to evoke. For example:  “Make it feel luxurious and calm, like checking into a boutique hotel.” “Should feel fast, responsive, and trustworthy—like booking a ride on Uber.”  And the AI? It generates an interface, interactions, even tone of voice—based on that emotional brief.  It’s not perfect (yet). But it gets scarily close.  For designers and product leaders, this unlocks a wild new dimension: communicating vibe, not just visuals. You become a creative director of experience, not just a user experience lead pushing pixels.  It’s a shift from mechanics to meaning. From layout to language.  But let’s be real: The tools aren’t quite there yet.  They’re close. But not close enough to fully replace the fidelity, intentionality, and nuance that a designer brings to a clickable prototype.  AI misses the thoughtful transitions. The user context. The subtle decisions that are often the difference between something that works and something that clicks.  That said—it won’t be long before that’s possible.  Designers will evolve  We think we’ll see a hybrid approach emerge where designers don’t disappear, they evolve. Our predictions include:  AI-generated prototypes to quickly test concepts and assumptions  Clickable flows to align teams and create confidence  High-fidelity design systems built after AI confirms demand  AI copilots supporting live ideation, usability testing, and iteration  We’ll move from building UI blocks to shaping systems and behaviors. We’ll direct the choreography of an experience, rather than drawing every step.  Still, it’s time to lean in.  At Crema, our designers are still using Figma, and we’re still building prototypes. The larger size also makes the Switch 2 weigh about 1.18 lbs, which is a little heavier than the .88-lbs original Switch. Apple is testing a feature that will let users scroll through Vision Pro apps using the headset’s eye-tracking capability, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Eye-based scrolling will apparently work across all of Apple’s built-in apps, and Gurman says the company is working on letting third-party developers use the feature, too. How it would actually function is a mystery, but I could see a system where you have to look at the edge of a page long enough to start scrolling, or focusing on a UI element, then looking above or below it to move a page. You can do a version of eye-based scrolling with the Dwell Control accessibility feature, which lets you open menus or carry out actions by briefly resting your eyes on items in your view. To scroll, you can gaze at an icon until the page scrolls a set amount — it’s clunky, and I’d be surprised if what Apple is testing works the same way.  Apart from accessibility alternatives, other ways to scroll include the default — pinching with your finger and thumb and raising or lowering your hand — connecting a Bluetooth mouse, or using the analog stick on a wireless game controller. Over the weekend, Gurman wrote in the subscriber edition of his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg that Apple is planning a “pretty feature-packed release” for visionOS 3, so we may hear more about this new eye-tracked scrolling feature during its June WWDC show.

A new outdoor concourse at Boston’s South Station by Pelli Clarke & Partners replaces a low slung entry that leads riders to the central hall—a vast improvement upon this quotidian scenario so many suburbanites experience daily. Riders have historically huddled off of drab rolling stock onto a concrete platform underneath a metal roof that leaks when it rains. They proceeded to a space that was once grand, but now pales compared to its former self. This new concourse, dubbed The Great Space, has 10 concrete arches that support three domes—each reaches 60 feet from floor to ceiling. The arches delineate passageways throughout the hall, connecting the atrium to the street, bus stops, and other transit connections. The floor-to-ceiling heights in the new concourse are 60 feet. (Jason O’Rear) At the center of each of the three domes is a ring of spotlights. These fixtures further brighten the interiors, which also rely on natural light for illumination. The underside of the domes were covered with a diagrid pattern that extends from the base of the arches up to the ring of lights. The outer walls of the concourse were clad in corrugated concrete, this adds texture and dimension to the design. “The transformed public concourse at South Station is not only an essential transportation space but also a bold architectural statement for Boston,” Graham Banks, a partner at Pelli Clarke & Partners, said in a statement. “By combining functionality with beauty,” Banks added, “the light-filled, expansive space enhances Boston’s position as a connected, forward-thinking hub and offers a monumental entryway befitting a great city.” The new approach (Jason O’Rear) The project was first announced in 2021, reported by James McCown for AN. The 126-year-old train shed was due for an upgrade; it hadn’t been renovated for 30 years. The concourse’s completion marks the end of phase one to the major redevelopment project happening at South Station, backed by the developer Hines. While the console’s handheld display supports VRR (variable refresh rate) technology to smooth out inconsistent framerates, the console’s Docked Mode output does not. Just weeks ago, Nintendo removed mentions of VRR support in Docked Mode from its official website for the upcoming console. However, Digital Foundry has now confirmed that developers have been informed of the feature’s absence when connecting the console to a TV. Nintendo Switch 2 loses VRR in Docked Mode In a recent video, Digital Foundry lead Richard Leadbetter confirmed the curious VRR decision in a deep breakdown of the Nintendo Switch 2 components. Backed by a source of developer documentation, it’s stated that the Dock simply doesn’t support VRR. “As far as Switch 2 developers are concerned, VRR, right now at least, is indeed a function of the internal display only and that there is no support at all right now for VRR over HDMI,” Leadbetter explained.” The respected journalist and video games analyst explained that the dock included with the Nintendo Switch 2 might not support the technology due to its older HDMI port. “The best theory that we have for this is that the dock’s Display Port to HDMI connector doesn’t support standard HDMI VRR, but whatever is the cause, we really hope to see Nintendo provide some sort of solution in due course.” With the constrained specifications of the Nintendo Switch 2, VRR support is a fantastic option. As 120Hz screens become more common, 40fps modes are offering great experiences for titles that can’t hit 60fps. For the Switch 2, this type of mode will be possible in Portable Mode, but not in Docked Mode. If this is indeed a hardware issue, the only way to actually bring VRR to Docked Mode would be with a revised dock sometime in the future which would split the user base. AI company Schemata has come out of stealth and announced $5 million in seed funding to accelerate the development of its training platform. The company’s 3D reality capture, spatial AI, and contextual information can help the defense and enterprise sectors more rapidly and cost-effectively create photorealistic and interactive training programs. The new platform is already being piloted by the Department of Defense. Schemata’s technology converts 2D images into photorealistic 3D environments using 3D reality capture. It then uses spatial AI to apply contextual information to those assets, as well as an AI Instructor so that users can engage with the 3D simulations through voice or text. The result is personalized AI-enabled training assistance that can be created 10 times faster and up to 85% more cost-effectively than traditional content creation means, the company said. The startup’s origins trace back to Stanford University, where founders James Brown and Huy Nguyen first developed the concept for an AI-driven simulation platform leveraging Brown’s insights on military training and simulation and Nguyen’s expertise in 3D graphics and computer vision​. The pair brought on former congressional staffer and co-founder Quin Roberts, and left Stanford last June to build Schemata. “By harnessing the latest advances in generative AI’s reasoning capabilities, we can more effectively parse complex 3D data—and, in turn, gain deeper insights into real-world environments,” said Brown, Schemata CEO, i an statement. “In the Marine Corps, everything I did was centered around large-scale physical operations on complex terrain and equipment. At Stanford, we saw how AI was transforming knowledge work, and we wanted to bring those same advancements to those who work out in the physical world”. 3D reality capture is the process of using technologies like laser scanners, drones, and photogrammetry to digitally reconstruct physical spaces in 3D​. The result is a highly accurate virtual model of a real environment. Spatial AI refers to AI systems that can understand and interact within these spaces – in other words, machines navigating the environments with human-like perception​. By combining these two technologies, Schemata can quickly generate a lifelike virtual replica of any location and embed an intelligent virtual instructor to guide users through it. Within these digital environments, the AI Instructor can dynamically interact with end-users: answering questions, highlighting objects, and adapting scenarios in real time. For example, an operator using a device loaded with Schemata’s models can ask a question out loud and receive instant guidance. Training modules that once took specialists months to build can now be generated in hours​ directly from a company’s existing training materials. “Our AI Instructor is like having a dedicated expert by your side 24/7 in a physical environment,” said Quin Roberts, Schemata’s COO, in a statement. “It can instantly analyze a 3D scene, point out safety hazards or operational steps, and respond to the user’s voice or text queries in real-time. This level of interactive, on-demand instruction simply isn’t available with conventional tools.” The timing of Schemata’s innovation aligns with a surging demand for virtual training across defense and industry. In the defense sector, the U.S. military already invests over $12 billion per year in simulation-based training​. Yet, these investments have primarily focused on high-end systems for pilots and specialized units. Schemata’s platform aims to broaden that reach. The platform is already being piloted in sectors like defense, energy, and infrastructure, where training often involves complex environments and high stakes. Demand is strong, with Schemata already being awarded $3.4 million in Department of Defense (DoD) contracts over the past eight months. Schemata’s oversubscribed funding round includes investments from prominent venture capital firms, led by Owl Ventures, with participation from a16z speedrun, Alumni Ventures, Anorak Ventures, and Time Zero Capital. Last summer, Schemata was selected for the third cohort of a16z’s speedrun startup program, with an acceptance rate of less than 1%. “We see a future where spatially-aware AI agents operate with a full context of the physical world—just like frontier language models now operate across digital systems,” said Nguyen, Schemata CTO, in a statement. “That’s why we’re connecting AI to rich 3D environments with embedded semantic data.
