  • Patch Notes #9: Xbox debuts its first handhelds, Hong Kong authorities ban a video game, and big hopes for Big Walk

We did it gang. We completed another week in the impossible survival sim that is real life. Give yourself a appreciative pat on the back and gaze wistfully towards whatever adventures or blissful respite the weekend might bring. This week I've mostly been recovering from my birthday celebrations, which entailed a bountiful Korean Barbecue that left me with a rampant case of the meat sweats and a pub crawl around one of Manchester's finest suburbs. There was no time for video games, but that's not always a bad thing. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, after all.I was welcomed back to the imaginary office with a news bludgeon to the face. The headlines this week have come thick and fast, bringing hardware announcements, more layoffs, and some notable sales milestones. As always, there's a lot to digest, so let's venture once more into the fray. The first Xbox handhelds have finally arrivedvia Game Developer // Microsoft finally stopped flirting with the idea of launching a handheld this week and unveiled not one, but two devices called the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. The former is pitched towards casual players, while the latter aims to entice hardcore video game aficionados. Both devices were designed in collaboration with Asus and will presumably retail at price points that reflect their respective innards. We don't actually know yet, mind, because Microsoft didn't actually state how much they'll cost. You have the feel that's where the company really needs to stick the landing here.Related:Switch 2 tops 3.5 million sales to deliver Nintendo's biggest console launchvia Game Developer // Four days. That's all it took for the Switch 2 to shift over 3.5 million units worldwide to deliver Nintendo's biggest console launch ever. The original Switch needed a month to reach 2.74 million sales by contrast, while the PS5 needed two months to sell 4.5 million units worldwide. Xbox sales remain a mystery because Microsoft just doesn't talk about that sort of thing anymore, which is decidedly frustrating for those oddballswho actually enjoy sifting through financial documents in search of those juicy juicy numbers.Inside the ‘Dragon Age’ Debacle That Gutted EA’s BioWare Studiovia Bloomberg// How do you kill a franchise like Dragon Age and leave a studio with the pedigree of BioWare in turmoil? According to a new report from Bloomberg, the answer will likely resonate with developers across the industry: corporate meddling. Sources speaking to the publication explained how Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which failed to meet the expectations of parent company EA, was in constant disarray because the American publisher couldn't decide whether it should be a live-service or single player title. Indecision from leadership within EA and an eventual pivot away from the live-service model only caused more confusion, with BioWare being told to implement foundational changes within impossible timelines. It's a story that's all the more alarming because of how familiar it feels.Related:Sony is making layoffs at Days Gone developer Bend Studiovia Game Developer // Sony has continued its Tony Award-winning tun as the Grim Reaper by cutting even more jobs within PlayStation Studios. Days Gone developer Bend Studio was the latest casualty, with the first-party developer confirming a number of employees were laid off just months after the cancellation of a live-service project. Sony didn't confirm how many people lost their jobs, but Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier heard that around 40 peoplewere let go. Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors to become executive chair and focus on M&Avia Game Developer // Somewhere, in a deep dark corner of the world, the monkey's paw has curled. Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors, who demonstrated his leadership nous by spending years embarking on a colossal merger and acquisition spree only to immediately start downsizing, has announced he'll be stepping down as CEO. The catch? Wingefors is currently proposed to be appointed executive chair of the board of Embracer. In his new role, he'll apparently focus on strategic initiatives, capital allocation, and mergers and acquisitions. And people wonder why satire is dead. Related:Hong Kong Outlaws a Video Game, Saying It Promotes 'Armed Revolution'via The New York Times// National security police in Hong Kong have banned a Taiwanese video game called Reversed Front: Bonfire for supposedly "advocating armed revolution." Authorities in the region warned that anybody who downloads or recommends the online strategy title will face serious legal charges. The game has been pulled from Apple's marketplace in Hong Kong but is still available for download elsewhere. It was never available in mainland China. Developer ESC Taiwan, part of an group of volunteers who are vocal detractors of China's Communist Party, thanked Hong Kong authorities for the free publicity in a social media post and said the ban shows how political censorship remains prominent in the territory. RuneScape developer accused of ‘catering to American conservatism’ by rolling back Pride Month eventsvia PinkNews // Runescape developers inside Jagex have reportedly been left reeling after the studio decided to pivot away from Pride Month content to focus more on "what players wanted." Jagex CEO broke the news to staff with a post on an internal message board, prompting a rush of complaints—with many workers explaining the content was either already complete or easy to implement. Though Jagex is based in the UK, it's parent company CVC Capital Partners operates multiple companies in the United States. It's a situation that left one employee who spoke to PinkNews questioning whether the studio has caved to "American conservatism." SAG-AFTRA suspends strike and instructs union members to return to workvia Game Developer // It has taken almost a year, but performer union SAG-AFTRA has finally suspended strike action and instructed members to return to work. The decision comes after protracted negotiations with major studios who employ performers under the Interactive Media Agreement. SAG-AFTRA had been striking to secure better working conditions and AI protections for its members, and feels it has now secured a deal that will install vital "AI guardrails."A Switch 2 exclusive Splatoon spinoff was just shadow-announced on Nintendo Todayvia Game Developer // Nintendo did something peculiar this week when it unveiled a Splatoon spinoff out of the blue. That in itself might not sound too strange, but for a short window the announcement was only accessible via the company's new Nintendo Today mobile app. It's a situation that left people without access to the app questioning whether the news was even real. Nintendo Today prevented users from capturing screenshots or footage, only adding to the sense of confusion. It led to this reporter branding the move a "shadow announcement," which in turn left some of our readers perplexed. Can you ever announce and announcement? What does that term even mean? Food for thought. A wonderful new Big Walk trailer melted this reporter's heartvia House House//  The mad lads behind Untitled Goose Game are back with a new jaunt called Big Walk. This one has been on my radar for a while, but the studio finally debuted a gameplay overview during Summer Game Fest and it looks extraordinary in its purity. It's about walking and talking—and therein lies the charm. Players are forced to cooperate to navigate a lush open world, solve puzzles, and embark upon hijinks. Proximity-based communication is the core mechanic in Big Walk—whether that takes the form of voice chat, written text, hand signals, blazing flares, or pictograms—and it looks like it'll lead to all sorts of weird and wonderful antics. It's a pitch that cuts through because it's so unashamedly different, and there's a lot to love about that. I'm looking forward to this one.

  • How To Create & Animate Breakdance-Inspired Streetwear

IntroductionHi, my name is Pankaj Kholiya, and I am a Senior 3D Character Artist. I've been working in the game industry for the past 8 years. I worked on titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, That Christmas, Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut, Star Wars: Outlaws, Alan Wake 2, Street Fighter 6, and many more. Currently, I'm working as a freelancer for the gaming and cinematics industry.Since my last interview, I made a few personal works, was a part of a Netflix movie, That Christmas, and worked with Platige on Star Wars: Outlaws and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 cinematic. The Breakdancing Clothing ProjectIt all started when I witnessed a dance battle that a friend organized. It was like watching Step Up live. There, I got the inspiration to create a break dancer. I started by gathering different references from the internet. I found one particular image on Pinterest and decided to recreate it in 3D.At first, the idea was to create the outfit in one pose, but along the way, I also decided to create a dancing version of the character and explore Unreal Engine. Here is the ref I used for the dancing version:Getting StartedFor the upcoming talents, I'll try to describe my process in a few points. Even before starting Marvelous Designer, I made sure to have my base character ready for animation and simulation. This time, I decided to use the MetaHuman creator for the base due to its high-quality textures and materials. My primary focus was on the clothing, so using MetaHuman saved a lot of time. After I was satisfied with how my MetaHuman looked, I took it to Mixamo to get some animations. I was really impressed by how good the animations worked on the MetaHuman. Once I had the animations, I took the animation into Marvelous Designer and simulated the clothes. For the posed character, I adjusted the rig to match the pose like the reference and used the same method as in this tutorial to pose the character:ClothingFor this particular project, I didn't focus on the topology as it was just for a single render. I just packed the UVs in Marvelous Designer, exported the quad mesh from Marvelous Designer, subdivided it a few times, and started working on the detailing part in ZBrush. For the texture, I used the low-division mesh from the ZBrush file, as I already had the UVs on it. I then baked the normal and other maps on it and took it to Substance 3D Painter.AnimationThere are multiple ways to animate the metahuman character. For this project, I've used Mixamo. I imported my character into Mixamo, selected the animation I liked, and exported it. After that, I just imported it to Marvelous Designer and hit the simulation button. You can check my previous breakdown for the Mixamo pipeline.Once happy with the result, I exported the simulated cloth as an Alembic to Unreal Engine. Tutorial for importing clothes into Unreal Engine:Lighting & RenderingThe main target was to match the lighting closely to the reference. This was my first project in Unreal Engine, so I wanted to explore the lighting and see how far I could go with it. Being new to the Unreal Engine, I went through a lot of tutorials. Here are the lights I've used for the posed version:For the dancing version, I've created a stage like the ref from the Step Up movie: Some tips I found useful for the rendering are in the video below:ConclusionAt first, I had a clear direction for this project and was confident in my skills to tackle the art aspect of it. But things changed when I dived into Unreal Engine for my presentation. More than half the time on this project went into learning and getting used to Unreal Engine. I don't regret a single second I invested in Unreal, as it was a new experience. It took around 15 days to wrap this one up.The lesson I learned is that upgrading your knowledge and learning new things will help you grow as an artist in the long run. Approaching how you make an artwork has changed a lot ever since I started 3D, and adapting to the changing art environment is a good thing. Here are some recommendations if you are interested in learning Unreal Engine.Pankaj Kholiya, Senior 3D Character ArtistInterview conducted by Amber Rutherford

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition on Nintendo Switch is one of the most exciting releases for the Switch 2 launch. After an atrocious release on last-gen consoles, the intense sci-fi RPG is a powerful benchmark of what the device is capable of.
In a recent analysis of new footage provided by Nvidia, tech analysts at Digital Foundry explained that the asset quality of the game on Switch 2 is “on par” with the game’s PS4 version, albeit with better image quality. However, even more impressively, the new version has been described as “a match” for the Xbox Series S version of the game.
Is Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 better than PS4?
In the latest episode of the DF Direct Weekly podcast, analyst Tom Morgan explained that the texture quality of CDPR’s RPG on Switch 2 manages to hit a higher resolution on the new handheld.
“What it reveals with PS4, right away, is that we’re getting similar asset quality, similar texture quality, it’s pretty much there,” Morgan explained. “What we are seeing as well is that image quality is massively improved… on the Switch version is a 720p to 1080p range… compared to what we had on PS4 which is 720p to 900p using CDPR’s own TAA.”
Morgan explained that there’s “no contest” between the two versions when it comes to the image quality between the two versions, explaining that the new handheld in “another league when it comes to sharpening up those details, clarifying noise, reducing noise across temporal shimmer which has always been a big problem with this game”.
    What about Series S?
The comparison gets more interesting when compared to the Xbox Series S version of the game. While the Nintendo Switch 2’s slower CPU means that the handheld can’t have a 60fps mode like the budget-priced Xbox, it is a match for the game’s quality mode.
Thanks to DLSS image reconstruction instead of the Xbox’s use of the now-outdated FSR 2, the Switch 2 version of the game has much better image clarity on details such as clothes stitching and background fences when characters are in movement. The Switch 2 version of Cyberpunk 2077 also eliminates a lot of the shimmering issues with the game on Series S, despite technically running at a lower resolution internally.
Technically, the Xbox Series S is running at a higher resolution than the Switch 2 version, but DLSS’ improvement over FSR 2, it ends up looking substantially cleaner in static shots and it’s far from perfect. High speed driving and complex scenes can cause a lot of issues on items such as hair and small objects moving in the background.
    How about that performance?
As we mentioned earlier, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be able to run at 60fps, although there will be a 720p/40fps mode, but the game’s 30fps framerate lock in the provided footage is also not perfect. When driving, the game skips frames on a regular basis with some scenes hitting a low of 20fps.
Some missions in Cyberpunk 2077 can be incredibly intensive such as the initial skirmish through the city near the game’s opening. Of course, there’s time for CDPR to improve the game and iron out some major performance issues, but as a very CPU-limited game, it’s not too surprising to see the game chug when you’re travelling through the game’s dense Night City.

For more Cyberpunk 2077 coverage, read about the latest news surrounding the in-development sequel and its second city to explore. Additionally, read about the Switch 2 version of Star Wars Outlaws and how its perhaps too big for the upcoming handheld. Subscribe to our newsletters! Motion blur seems like the odd one out here, IMO. Film grain just adds absolutely nothing. Bloom might be good in theory but it sure seems like we've improved on what "bloom" was doing at this point. But motion blur makes total sense to me.

No to motion blur and film grain, I always turn them off.

Bloom, in the other hand, depends on the implementation and its intensity. Modern bloom is much better than what we saw in PS360 era.

I don't even mind chromatic aberration unless it's really egregious. And I actually prefer leaving motion blur on, especially if it's per-object motion blur.

I usually turn them off when I have the option, specially after I bought Final Fantasy Type-0 HD on launch and it had such intense motion blur that moving the camera gave me headaches, so I've never played it past the very start

Motion blur can really help at 30fps if it's implemented well but even at 40fps it becomes way less appealing. At 60fps or higher it hurts more than it helps.

Film grain... I don't know, I usually just turn it off because it's either not noticeable at all or too noticeable.

I have a soft spot for bloom. It can be really effective at adding a bit of whimsy like with the original Oblivion.

Chromatic aberration is usually not my cup of tea but there are some games where it worked for me. Sue me, I liked it in Bloodborne.

I cannot fucking stand vignettes and it actually killed my desire to play The Witcher 3 because the PS4 version got patched at some point to make the vignetting super dark and distracting with no way to turn it off.

As a console player, yeah I fucking love it.

Well done motion blur helps the "feel" of 30fps dramatically. Subtle film grain and lens effects can add up to an immersive "cinematic" aesthetic.

Of course, all of these things can be abused... but that goes for everything.

I stream alot of games from my gaming PC to my bedroom media-ish PC, so I usually disable film grain because I assume it'd hurt compression. Not sure if that's a real thing though, wonder if they do the same by default on streaming services.

Otherwise, assuming they aren't horrible implementations, I don't mind any of those effects.

I don't think I have ever actually seen film grain in a game, I can't tell the difference on or off. Motion blur CAN be good, but it seems like it's always implemented in a stupid way.

Bloom feels like kind of a last-gen thing? I guess Veilguard had it. It's fine.

I kinda like film grain, but I'll turn it down to 50% or so if possible. It depends on the game and the look they're going for, but usually I'll turn down those visual settings rather than completely off. Same with camera bob/sway - I'll turn that down to 20% if I can.

Hate all of those annoying post-processing effects and I turnthem off instantly.

Give me a clean and native image every time!

I like motion blur if well implemented. If you're playing at 60fps or under it helps a fair bit to smooth out the image.

CA and film grain depends on the implementation and what the game is going for. Generally I leave them on though unless it's absurdly intrusive

Depends on the look the game is going for I guess. Like something like the last of us 2 just looks kind of plain without that added post-processing to give it that filmic look it's going for. But if I'm playing something more inherently gamey then I'll turn them off if they're too obtrusive.

I love them all of they are used well for artistic style.

What I hate is all the dithering I see from upscaling in all these games.

Chromatic aberration can absolutely be done right, but very few devs show that kind of restraint.

It's a good effect to use when taking damage in certain games. Or it could show up when simulating a shitty security camera readout. Or maybe it could only appear as you approach a dangerous/lethal area.

I always liked the effect in Teleglitch:

I tend to keep bloom and film grain on as I assumed those are part of the artists' intended vision on how a game should look like. As for motion blur, it depends. It stays on for console 30fps and off if I can hit 60fps on PC.

  • 5 movies leaving Netflix in May 2025 you have to watch now

May belongs to Vince Vaughn and the grandmothers. Nonnas, which premiered on May 9, has become a hit on Netflix and remains in the top 10 most popular movies list. From the kitchen to the football field, Untold: The Fall of Favre is a fascinating look into two notorious scandals involving Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.
Nonnas and The Fall of Favre will remain on the streamer when the calendar changes from May to June. Unfortunately, these five movies are departing the service. One of them is Batman Begins, the first movie in the spectacular Dark Knight trilogy. Check out the rest of the picks below.

    Batman BeginsWarner Bros. Pictures
In 2025, Christopher Nolan is the top filmmaker in Hollywood concerning power, notoriety, and recognition. 20 years ago, Nolan did not have the same juice he has now. However, Batman Begins is arguably the movie that changed his career. The previous Batman movies treated Bruce Wayne like a comic book character. Nolan crafted a more grounded and nuanced version of the character, starting with a gritty origin story in Batman Begins.
After years of training and traveling globally, Bruce Waynereturns to Gotham City and becomes Batman, the masked vigilante intent on ridding the city of crime. Batman’s foes include his former mentor, Henri Ducard, and Scarecrow, two men who believe Gotham isn’t worth saving. After watching Batman Begins, stream The Dark Knight and Batman Begins, which also leave at the end of the month.
    Stream Batman Begins on Netflix.
    Den of ThievesSTXfilms
What a comeback year it’s been for Den of Thieves. The cult classic’s popularity led to a sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, which premiered in January. Plus, a third movie is now in the works. However, these sequels would not have been possible without the original from 2018. Written and directed by Christian Gudegast, Den of Thieves is a heist film set in Los Angeles that pits the cops against the robbers.
The lines are blurred as neither side is good nor evil. The police are led by Big Nick O’Brien, a renegade cop who frequently breaks the law to apprehend the enemy. The outlaws’ leader is Ray Merrimen, a former Marine and mastermind of a heist crew. Merrimen’s group plans to hit the Federal Reserve Bank, and Big Nick plans to stop it. It’s going to get loud, violent, and chaotic once these two sides battle.

    Pride & PrejudiceUniversal Pictures
“You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love you.” Jane Austen fans will recognize that iconic line from Joe Wright’s terrific adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. In the English countryside live the five Bennet sisters: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. The girls have been pressured by their father to find a suitable husband, particularly a wealthy one.
The free-spirited Elizabeth has no plans to marry for money and will hold out for love. Could that man be Mr. Darcy? Good luck not falling in love with the will-they-won’t-they dilemma between Elizabeth and Darcy.

    GoodFellasWarner Bros. Pictures
Martin Scorsese’s greatest movie is about to leave Netflix, which is a crime against humanity. The late Ray Liotta plays Henry Hill, a Brooklyn teenager who advances within the ranks of the Mafia to become one of its top lieutenants. While working for the mafia, Henry becomes closely associated with Jimmy Conway, an Irish-American gangster, and Tommy DeVito, a fiery criminal.
The trio reaps the rewards of being in the mafia — money, drugs, and power. These items also lead to their demise. The brilliance of Goodfellas is how Scorsese divides the story into two halves. The first half glamorizes the mafia lifestyle, while the second half explores the dark consequences of being a gangster. Describing Goodfellas as a masterpiece does not do it justice.

Two Weeks Notice Warner Bros. Pictures
Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant starring in Two Weeks Notice is equivalent to Captain America and Iron Man joining the Avengers. Bullock and Grant became two of the ’90s biggest names, especially in rom-coms. The stars aligned in Two Weeks Notice, Marc Lawrence’s take on the opposites attract trope. Lawyer Lucy Kelsonwill do whatever it takes to protect the environment. Billionaire George Wadeonly cares about himself and his money.
Lucy works for George after he promises to save a community center. At first, oil and water are a better mix than Lucy and George. Over time, the duo come to appreciate one another’s company and gain feelings. Even with a predictable ending, Two Weeks Notice will satisfy anyone who loves on-screen chemistry between the leads.
