RuneScape developer Jagex has laid off an undisclosed number of staff from 'non-game development roles, which was confirmed today by the studio.Reported by PCGamer, the layoffs first came to light on the RuneScape subreddit, with users noticing moderators missing all of a sudden. A mod that goes by Hooli replied to the thread mentioning the job cuts. They added that the majority of the layoffs were "from non-game dev and non-player facing areas," adding that the roadmap for RuneSpace: Dragonwilds, which launched into Steam early access two months ago, “won’t change because of these job reductions.”“We’ll continue the great path we've been on with our content,” Hooli added."Changes to operational structure" at JagexAccording to the studio, the layoffs, presented as “changes to our operational structure,” were part of a strategy to build “the best experiences for players and grow the RuneScape community.” The goals are to “reduce complexity, increase agility, and ensure we are fully focused on the areas that matter most-our games, our players, and our future.”While Jagex declined to disclose the exact number of employees affected, it says the vast majority are within the operations and administrative support teams.Related:“We recognize that any change of this nature is difficult, and we are committed to supporting all impacted employees throughout the transition,” the company addded, although it didn’t share specifics about how it plans to provide support.Jagex reported profit growth for the seventh year in a row at the end of 2022, four years after shutting down RuneScape Classic, ending a 17-year-old run. The studio was then acquired by private equity firms CVC Capital and Haveli Investments in February 2024. A month later, CEO Phil Mansell departed the studio after eight years. CVC Capital advisor and Jagex board member Jon Bellami then took helm of the studio.

  • Helldivers 2 CCO wishes players would understand just how hard updates actually are as game development makes “ something that seems easy really hard”

You can trust VideoGamer. Our team of gaming experts spend hours testing and reviewing the latest games, to ensure you're reading the most comprehensive guide possible. Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games here

Helldivers 2 is one of the most exciting multiplayer games around, largely due to Arrowhead’s fantastic post-launch updates. While the game’s first few updates had some major issues, the developer has released some truly fantastic patches, including the on-going Illuminate Invasion of Super Earth.
In a recent interview with PCGamer, Arrowhead CCO Johan Pilestedt explained that gamers don’t understand just how difficult it actually is to add in some of these major features.
Speaking in the interview, Pilestedt explained that the troubles of game development means that adding in simple features can take way longer than many gamers expect. On the other side, sometimes even major features can take less time than many would assume—it’s all down to the perils of development.
“The one thing people misconstrue the most is—if you think about when movies are made, you get an actor and they’re there, and you tell them what to say,” the Arrowhead CCO explained. “But games are so meticulously crafted. You have to build the actor from the ground up.”
Pilestedt explained that they often see players online asking why the studio doesn’t just add features to the game, but those commenters don’t understand just how difficult that job is as they don’t know how the game actually works.
“can’t they add this or do that’,” the developer explained. “Most of the time, the decisions you makehave so many consequences that cascade.something that seems easy really hard, or something that seems really hard super simple. It’s unintuitive unless you’ve worked in games to see how they’re created.”
Over the past few years, we’ve seen this type of comment on countless articles, social media posts and more. Oftentimes, when an update doesn’t do exactly what a player wants, they’ll call developers “lazy” or insult them. However, adding anything to a game is typically harder than the majority of players believe it is.
Pilestedt’s comments probably won’t stop players from complaining or commenting every update, but Arrowhead’s major additions to Helldivers 2 are incredibly impressive. From the arrival of the Illuminate to the introduction of Mega City maps, the studio has already overhauled the game in ways many thought impossible.
As the game evolves, the Helldivers 2 developers are planning to make the game feel like a full-fledged sequel. It’s an exciting time to be a fan—let’s just hope we don’t lose Super Earth!

There has also been a documented case of a headless Shadowheart, without a doubt a victim of very vicious paintbrush.

    News on the subject:

Baldur's Gate 3 companions got official D&D minis, and I am casting Vicious Mockery because what in the Nine Hells is this

    Gale, you feeling all right?

The Baldur's Gate 3 cast got a new set of pre-painted minis and—oh, oh no, oh no no no

The smart move here for Larian would be to immediately 3D scan these figures and then add them to the game as characters.

Hoenstly, that's par for the course with pre-painted mass produced plastic minis - I feel like the quality standards have dropped considerably over the past 10-20 years. Back in the day you'd be spending -2 per mini and they'd look consistently good. Not hand-painted quality, but solid. Now to get anything near quality it's like a mini? Maybe?Like, I used to play Heroscape, and the Master Set with 30 miniatures and a shitton of terrain was only The rebooted version that came out last year is 20 unpainted miniatures and like half the terrain for or the version with painted minis for It's crazy.

I've just learned to settle for unpainted.

It's possibly confirmation bias but I don't think I've ever seen a mass-market pre-painted figure line that wasn't messy as fuck? There's just no way to ensure the quality across so many figures.

  • An indie studio is reviving Defiance (that MMO with the TV show)

A dead MMO that launched with a now-cancelled TV show in 2013 is coming back 4 years after servers were shut down

    Defiance, indeed.
    www.pcgamer.com

Trion Worlds' Defiance was an odd duck.
It launched in 2013 alongside a TV show tie-in with the same name, set on a future Earth following an alien invasion—during which the planet was aggressively terraformed.
Both the game and the show were a mix of grungy post-apocalyptic western and futuristic sci-fi.
Only a couple of years later, the show was cancelled, but the MMO persevered.
And it stuck around for a while, until 2021, when the servers were shut down.
Defiance was never one of the heavy-hitters, and I haven't thought about it for a good long while, but it looks like it's been living in enough folks' heads that it's making a comeback.
Fawkes, "an indie studio and publisher dedicated to reviving treasured titles", has decided that Defiance fits its brief, and has set itself the task of bringing the game back to life.
It acquired the rights to both the original 2013 version of the game and the relaunched Defiance 2050 version that appeared in 2018.
Defiance will make its comeback in April, with Fawkes launching the original 2013 version of the MMO.
Its plan is to work with the community, starting small, with a PC launch, and then growing based on feedback.
The return of the console version might be on the cards, too, but that ultimately depends on its reception on PC.

Not really sure who this is for but ok.
    I'm all for game preservation.
Hopefully they can make an offline version of the game so people can always access it.

    Well.....shit.
From one of the first alphas all the way to server shutdown, I was in this game.
I am more than happy to jump back in, especially if it's back to original launch version.

Played this game at launch and jumped in and out of it through the years.
Interesting to want to start with the 2013 version of the game though.

Having said that, as someone who bought it at launch and enjoyed it, sign me up

    Oh damn.
    That'd be awesome.
I got like 1 achievement on Xbox 360 and then forgot about it.
Would be nice to get more time into it.

I was oddly enough just thinking about this game a few weeks back, so weird that it's poped up again.

I watched the tv show and it was good for a nice little sci fi drama, but remember the game being quite mediocre.
Odd that someone would try and bring it back

3rd time lucky? I remember playing it with some friends the first time it came out.
    It was a bit rubbish.
The last time it came out it was still a bit rubbish.
I expect it will a be a bit rubbish the next time it comes out too.

I remember enjoying it, and I liked the show well enough, flawed as it was, but IIRC the game was pretty barebones and the 2050 launch was bad.

Just a re-release, not even adding anything substantial? What's the point then, third time is a charm?

I remember fairly liking the show and having 0 interest in the MMO game.

I doubt this is gonna work, but good luck to them nevertheless.

The weirdest stuff is, the TV show Defiance ended up being really great.
After OK s1, it really got much better in following seasons, which culminated in truly awesome ending.

Found it super bland and dropped it quick, even watched a few eps of the show too, good way to hype the IP at the time.

Wild to bring it back tbh hahah.

I remember enjoying this! The public events were fun and the loot was pretty good for this sort of thing.
PvP felt busted and the tie in the TV show felt cheesy despite enjoying the first season of the show at the time.

Loved both the game and show.

The game did a really good job of taking the rift mechanic from the Rift MMO (same dev) and applying it to a shooter.

I played this on PS3, but I don't remember if I bought it, or if they gave it away with PS+.
Edit: It could have been after it went F2P, but au feel like it was at launch with the show.

I was actually really into the 2013 MMO, never played the updated 2050 version.
I even thought the show wasn't half bad.

Maybe I'll give it a try again just for the nostalgia.

Servers were way overloaded and were more often down than up for the first couple weeks.
It's fine now, no issues getting in and playing but I see very little population outside of major Arkfalls.
Major Arkfalls which still have the same old problem of enemies or other players or both just vanishing constantly because the area's overloaded, thus making it impossible to do anything before getting blown up out of nowhere.

I see, that's unfortunate to hear.
I was checking out that Fawkes Games website, looks like they host other old games as well but most of the links don't work.

Season 1 of the show was pretty decent.
But they never had the budget to really do what they wanted to do.

An indie studio is reviving Defiance (that MMO with the TV show)
Saucycarpdog Member Oct 25, 2017 20,233 A dead MMO that launched with a now-cancelled TV show in 2013 is coming back 4 years after servers were shut down Defiance, indeed. www.pcgamer.com Trion Worlds' Defiance was an odd duck. Click to expand... Click to shrink... Not really sure who this is for but ok.
