The biggest American film of the year so far, perhaps a little surprisingly, is A Minecraft Movie, the highly meme-able comedy based on the hugely popular series of Minecraft video games.So far, the film, directed by Jared Hess, has grossed over $950 million in theaters worldwide, nearly $150 million more than its closest competition. (That would be Lilo & Stitch.) With little else to prove in theaters, the movie is now headed to streaming, and will premiere on Max (soon to be HBO Max again) in one week.In the film, a former video game champion (Jason Momoa) and a troubled teenager (Sebastian Hansen) discover a magical object that leads them into the Minecraft world. There, they meet — who else? — Steve, played by Jack Black. The human heroes need to team up to save this strange, blocky universe from the evil Malgosha, a piglin from the fiery Nether realm.Warner Bros.Warner Bros.loading...The film’s quirky sense of humor and highly quotable dialogue (like “Chicken jockey!” and “I ... am Steve!”) helped A Minecraft Movie go viral even before it had hit theaters. Huge crowds of young teens flocked to the theater (something they don’t do all that often anymore, sadly) to scream the lines back at the screen, copying a trend they’d seen on TikTok. I witnessed it first-hand and, since I don’t use TikTok, I was totally baffled. (I’m so old.)Kids got so rowdy at some screenings that police had to be called to settle things down. (Warner Bros. later help special screenings where screaming back the screen was encouraged.) Now that Minecraft will be on Max, you can yell “Flint and steel!” to your heart’s content without having to worry about getting arrested (unless your neighbors are real narcs). The Wicked movie was only half of the story from the hit Broadway musical. The conclusion — literally the entire second act of the show — is the basis for Wicked: For Good, featuring the same cast (including Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande) and directed once again by Jon M. Science fiction encompasses so much of modern blockbuster cinema. So many big-budget movies these days are based on comic books, video games, and toys — and, in turn, so many comics, video games, and toys are rooted in sci-fi concepts like doctors who inject themselves with experimental serums or alien bounty hunters on alternate planets, or robots in disguise that transform into tractor-trailers or boomboxes.Comics and games and even action figures have inspired some good science-fiction movies, even one or two about robots that can turn into boomboxes. Guillermo del Toro keeps transforming old classics for Netflix. He previously directed his vision of the animated favorite Pinocchio; now he’s tackling one of the most famous horror tales of all time: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.For del Toro, this has been a dream project for many years — or maybe decades. He’s been talking about it publicly since at least the 2000s, and after several stabs at the project fell through at various other studios, he finally got to make his dream a reality at Netflix, who funded his version of the Gothic horror classic with an impressive cast that includes Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein’s Monster. The parallels between Victor Frankenstein pursuing his quixotic dreams of creating life, and del Toro’s own endless quest to create his cinematic vision are already getting me extremely excited for this film. Who doesn’t love a good horror allegory for the act of moviemaking itself?The first trailer for the film confirms that GDT’s Frankenstein will premiere later this year on Netflix. It’s no secret that the film industry is dominated by series and franchises and shared universes, to the degree that every time a studio releases a successful movie, it’s only a matter of a couple years before that movie is the start of a new cinematic universe.Turning a simple series — first movie, sequel, sequel to the sequel, and so on — into a franchise only requires one thing: spinoffs that are just as well received as the original project. These could be based on pre-existing side characters who finally get their moment to shine, or based on related IP that exists in the same world but hasn’t gotten a feature yet, or an entirely new story with a couple Easter eggs thrown in to emphasize a connection.A lot of the time, this works. Every major studio is still chasing the highs of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — the Avengers saga plus all of its additions over the years. Other times, it doesn’t, and the exciting spinoff that was meant to be the start of an entirely new series of films turns out to be a dud, a literal non-starter, and whatever was planned to come after it is scrapped until everyone forgets how bad it was. Today, we’re celebrating these movies, the poorly planned, the poorly executed, and the just plain all-around terrible attempts to juice more story from a pre-existing world. The Avengers are not returning to theaters as initially planned.Marvel had previously slated the two Avengers sequels, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars for May 1, 2026 and May 7, 2027, respectively. Both films have been pushed back from the summer to the holiday season. Their new dates are December 18, 2026 (for Doomsday) and December 17, 2027 (for Secret Wars).Marvel’s next film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, is still scheduled to open this summer on July 25, 2025. The only other upcoming MCU movie with a confirmed release date at this point besides the two Avengers is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. If the movie was supposed to be set after whatever cliffhanger concludes Doomsday, that could conceivably require major changes to the film’s story. If it’s tied in any significant way to the events of Avengers: Doomsday, it would almost have to be.With this change, the next Avengers movies will be the only installments of the franchise not to open in either early May or late April. Marvel typically releases their films either in the late winter, the early summer, mid-July, or November. But Sony (in conjunction with Marvel) did release Spider-Man: No Way Home in theaters on December 17, 2021, and that movie grossed $1.91 billion worldwide. So perhaps that is a good time for a massive superhero crossover film.Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars mark the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time as Doctor Doom. Sesame Street is relocating to Netflix.The iconic children’s television show, which is heading into its 56th season, has announced its next batch of new episodes will premiere on Netflix. The first episodes for the streaming service will also come with some new format changes.According to a press release, the new episodes “will now center on one 11-minute story, allowing for even more character-driven humor and heart.” (Traditionally, Sesame Street episodes were 60 minutes long. In 2014, the show switched to 30 minute episodes.)dNetflix also says the show is bringing back “fan-favorite segments like Elmo’s World and Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck” as well as new concepts like Cookie Monster opening “his very own Cookie Cart on Sesame Street.” (I can’t wait for the episode where Cookie Monster takes on Crumbl, but finds he cannot compete with their scale or their weekly product drops and social media team.
