PS5 live service plans in trouble again as Fairgames delay rumoured Adam Starkey Published May 16, 2025 2:12pm Updated May 16, 2025 2:12pm Fairgame$ doesn’t seem to be faring well (Sony Interactive Entertainment) One of PlayStation’s few remaining live service projects looks like it’s in trouble, as the studio’s founder departs amid concerns around its progress. Sony once had plans for 12 live service projects to be released by 2026, but many of them have either been cancelled or, like Concord, scrubbed from existence after a mere two weeks. Despite its failures in the area (the externally developed Helldivers 2 being the only exception), PlayStation still has several live service projects underway, driven by the potential profits from microtransactions which are a crucial part of PlayStation’s overall income. One of these upcoming games is Fairgame$ from developer Haven Studios, which was originally announced back in May 2023. While we’ve heard nothing about the heist shooter since, reports suggest things aren’t going well. The first concerning sign is the departure of Haven studio founder, Jade Raymond, who served as a producer in the early days of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. In light of her exit, Haven Studios will now be led by new co-studio heads Marie-Eve Danis and François Sapinski. ‘Jade Raymond has been an incredible partner and visionary force in founding Haven Studios,’ a PlayStation spokesperson said in a statement. ‘We are deeply grateful for her leadership and contributions, and we wish her all the best in her next chapter.’ As reported by Bloomberg, no reason was given for Raymond’s exit, but this comes several weeks after an ‘external test’ of Fairgame$. Following this test, it’s claimed ‘some developers at Haven were concerned about how the game was received and its progress’. According to the report, Fairgame$ was originally slated to come out in autumn 2025, but it has been delayed to spring next year – potentially in the firing line of GTA 6. However, this hasn’t been officially announced by Sony. While it’s unclear why it would have been potentially delayed, launching Fairgame$ later this year seems like a bizarre move considering Sony’s next live service hopeful, Bungie’s Marathon, is set to drop on September 23, 2025. More Trending Beyond Marathon, Sony’s other remaining live service project is a rumoured Horizon multiplayer spin-off, which is reportedly set to release before 2027. So it’s possible Fairgame$ might be awkwardly wedged between the two – if it isn’t cancelled before then. While Sony has cancelled many live service games over the past few years, including The Last Of Us Online, the company has recently opened several studios clearly designed to chase this model. One of these, Dark Outlaw Games, is led by former Call Of Duty Zombies lead Jason Blundell, while another, named teamLFG, is working on a team-based action game. There’s a chance we could see more from Fairgame$ over the coming weeks, if Sony holds its usual State Of Play presentation in May or June. Assuming it makes it as far as a public release, that is. Nicole Crawley has saved $2,000 in the past 2 years using a couponing app to manage household expenses. Crawley, a stay-at-home mom, has honed her strategy to save on baby products and essentials. Crawley has been couponing since she was 15, and says it's worth it to learn how to save. Nicole Crawley has been couponing since she was 15.Now, at 28 and a mom of three, she takes money-saving seriously. Over the past two years, she's saved $2,000 using a couponing app. That can make a real difference in her household, which lives on one income since she's a stay-at-home mother. High day care costs drove her to stay home with her kids; losing her salary means leaning even more into couponing."I still use a lot of the skills and a lot of the shopping techniques to be able to afford the lifestyle that we have kept up," she said, referring to the money-saving methods she learned growing up in a "very, very poor" family. Though she now mainly uses a couponing app, she first accrued savings the old-school way: a couponing binder, rifling through the recycling center for coupon inserts, and even collecting coupons from people in her community who wanted to help out.Those skills are coming in handy in an age when products, especiall those for children and babies, have seen price fluctuations. Tariffs might only increase costs. An April 10 survey of 1,1014 US consumers by market research data firm Numerator found that 83% of consumers are planning on changing up their shopping behaviors in preparation for tariffs, and 48% said that they'll look for sales or coupons. Crawley said that tariffs are a stressor — she's been picking up her couponing to ensure that they have staples in their household."If prices do increase significantly, which I do see happening, it won't hit home as hard and as abruptly," she said.Couponing to save money on kids' stuffWhen she was younger, Crawley watched TLC's "Extreme Couponing," a TV show about people seeking to save as much money as possible and competing to see who can get their bills to be the smallest. While Crawley said the show itself is unrealistic, it did help her launch her own couponing passion. Crawley said that when she first moved out of her house at 18, she paused her couponing for a little while she got settled. But when her first child was born a few years later, and she was trying to make it on her own, she discovered how expensive baby gear was. That's when she threw herself back into the couponing lifestyle. She was able to accumulate so many baby items that she could donate some to her local women's care center; her hauls included baby soap, lotions, and diaper wipes. She also said she took her couponing ethos to other ways of saving — she utilized thrift stores, and would barter her coupon items for other items she needed, like baby clothes or toys.Couponing these days looks a bit different. Paper coupons are less common, and retailers will only allow consumers to use a few at a time, she said. Instead, rebate apps like Ibotta are the place to be these days. That app has helped Crawley save over $2,000. She also takes advantage of retailers' online coupons and online loyalty accounts. One of her most recent household finds: Eight toilet bowl cleaners for $5 at Walgreens. With a universe of deal options, Crawley said she's been focusing her efforts on diapers, formula, and other baby accoutrements.Getting discounts and trying out new productsCrawley also capitalizes on a strategy retailers use to potentially hook new customers: She'll often try new products just because they have a steep discount. When Ragu announced a new kids veggie sauce, she was able to get jars for 25 cents each; it ended up being a hit in her household, and she has 12 jars currently sitting in her pantry.Crawley is still trying to be mindful of overconsumption — she doesn't want to just accrue things she doesn't need for the sake of couponing. She said that she tries to clear some things out when she's run out of space, or they might not be able to use them before they go bad."If I get anything extra that, we might not use this in time, it automatically gets donated to a family in need. I'll post on Facebook, 'Hey, who needs this? Come get it," she said. "Or I'll take it to our woman's care center and they'll dish it out to whoever needs it there."Couponing has been worth it for Crawley's household. She knows it can be daunting to explore, but the work is worth it."When you're planning your grocery excursion with it, making your list, it can be time-consuming," she said. "You're checking multiple apps, you're checking all the coupons, you're checking the ads, you're writing everything down. Bosch Ventures, the corporate investment arm of German technology supplier Robert Bosch GmbH, has announced a new €250 million venture capital fund to support startups developing breakthrough technologies. Introduced during Bosch’s 2024 annual financial presentation, the fund reinforces the company’s long-term strategy of supporting early-stage innovation, even amid global economic turbulence. Collaboration between startups and Bosch’s internal divisions is facilitated by Open Bosch, a program launched in 2018 to integrate early-stage technologies into corporate workflows. The initiative includes two new manufacturing facilities in Fort Worth, Texas, and Pomona, California, totaling $285 million and projected to generate more than 900 skilled jobs. These sites will produce electrical equipment for industrial and construction applications and supply hardware for AI data centers. Siemens also acquired a U.S. software firm as part of its broader strategy to support domestic production and expand AI-related capabilities across its operational footprint. The Clore Garden project seeks to transform the approach to the Grade II* listed gallery into a planted landscape incorporating accessible pathways, public art and a new garden classroom. According to Tate, the project aims to enhance biodiversity and increase opportunities for community engagement, while offering a new civic green space in central London. The landscape design features a network of pathways set within densely planted zones and intends to create varied conditions for seasonal planting, wildlife habitats and informal gathering. The garden will include new seating areas, a café terrace, a wildlife pond and spaces for programmed outdoor activities. Sculptures from Tate’s collection are expected to be integrated into the landscape. Digital empathy.The title of the article, “Digital Empathy: How product teams can support users with depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges,” and a gradient blobUsing human psychology to “hack” a good user experience is not a new concept. In fact, understanding psychology and tactically applying those principles is user experience design at its core.The connection between psychology and product design is one of the main reasons I chose to transition careers from mental health social work; I entered the product design industry with over a decade of deep understanding of psychology and human behavior.According to the World Health Organization, about 1 billion people worldwide live with mental illness (source). Rates of adults suffering from depression have risen 8.7% from 2017 to 2023 (source), and about one-third of US adults experience an anxiety disorder in their lifetime (source).A graph from the Gallup depicting the rising trends in depression from 2015 to 2023 (source).On top of that, the Federal Trade Commission has reported a rise in commercial companies using sophisticated digital designs called “deceptive patterns” (also known as dark patterns), manipulating users into giving up their money and personal data (source). These deceptive patterns exploit human psychology, especially in the most vulnerable users, like those with mental illnesses.Seeing the rise in mental illness and the simultaneous growth in deceptive patterns and bad UX, I began to connect product design, accessibility, and mental illness. Or rather, I have begun to expand my understanding and definition of accessibility to include mental illness. I began to ask myself:What does it mean to design products that are more accessible to those with mental illness?Co-creationThe process of designing and building products that are accessible to those with mental health disorders should always start with the people who live with mental illness. This idea is probably not surprising or groundbreaking for most product designers because empathy and the user are centered in the standard design process. However, due to the vulnerabilities those with mental illnesses have, the collaboration and co-creation process should be altered and adjusted to accommodate their needs and ensure an emotionally safe environment.An emotionally safe environment is one where someone “feels safe to express emotions, security, and confidence to take risks and feel challenged and excited to try something new” (source).When conducting research with participants who have mental health conditions:Create a comfortable, judgment-free environment. Adjust your style and methods based on the individual participants if possible to help them feel comfortable.Ensure that the participants know what is expected of them. When possible, explain the research structure, what your goals are, what types of responses you are looking for, and the time commitment.Be flexible with session timing and structure. Allow breaks when possible, and pay close attention to participants’ body language and facial expressions to catch discomfort that might not be expressed verbally.Offer multiple ways to participate (in-person, remote, written responses).Provide clear explanations of how their information will be used, including where and how it will be stored, and who will have access to it.Follow up sensitively after sessions to ensure participants feel supported.Simplify and streamlineOne of the most important and impactful ways to design for those with mental illnesses is to reduce cognitive load. In addition to benefiting those with mental illnesses, reducing cognitive load leads to better experiences for most users, making it an easy sell to skeptical stakeholders.“In the field of user experience, we use the following definition: the cognitive load imposed by a user interface is the amount of mental resources that is required to operate the system. Informally, you can think of mental resources as ‘brain power’ — more formally, we’re talking about slots in working memory.” -Kathryn Whitenton (source)Our brains, similar to machines or computers, have limited processing power. Those with mental illnesses can have even less capacity to process new information and make decisions (source). Basic usability principles can help with this, like chunking or framing content, optimizing response time, and embracing minimalism.Users experience cognitive load when interacting with products. (Image Source)Taking it a step further, I have found the following strategies help those with mental illness when using the products I am designing:Simplify designs further: Avoid using unnecessary images or videos in the UI, narrow down the typography and color palettes, and lean into the use of white space. Allowing the UI room to breathe helps users understand what decisions they need to make and reduces cognitive load.Step-by-Step Processes: Lead users on a streamlined journey through your product or feature with simple, bite-sized steps. Make sure the path is clear to users at all times, and they know what they should do next. This is particularly important for onboarding experiences because this is the user’s first introduction to the product, and reducing the learning curve will lead to a better experience.Limit Choices: Hold the user’s hand and give the illusion of freedom while limiting the number of decisions on one screen. There is not an exact science or number of choices for one page, but use a critical eye on your designs and think through ways to limit the decisions users have to make.Offload tasks: Look for anything in your design that requires user effort. Reading text or remembering information are key examples. Then look for alternatives: can you auto-fill information to prevent the user from having to memorize? Can you show a picture or video instead of forcing them to read? It’s not possible to shift all tasks away from users, but every task you automate leaves more cognitive space for the decisions that truly are necessary.Soften copywriting and avoid shamingShame is an extremely distressing emotional experience that can be debilitating to those with mental illnesses (source; source). Shaming, confronting, or aggressively persuading users has very serious consequences, both for the user and for the product. It is such a distressing experience that users with mental illnesses will begin to develop a poor impression of the brand, or worse, abandon the product altogether (source).As Regina Jankowski quotes Angie Chaplin in an article for Inclusion Hub (source): “If I feel something is a trauma trigger for me, then I will scroll past it.”How do you avoid shaming or confrontation in designs?A popup that uses shaming language to pressure users into providing their personal information.Use supportive language and avoid accusatory wording. Do not blame the user for mistakes or errors, and instead shift the focus to the abstract or the platform.❌ “You entered an invalid email”✅ “We couldn’t recognize this email”2. Design more thoughtful error states. Be specific about the error or issue presented, provide a path forward, and avoid technical jargon that could alienate users. Additionally, ensure that an error state only appears after the user has completed an action incorrectly, and not while they are attempting to finish. For example, an input box should not display an error message while a user is still typing, and should only appear once they have completed the task (incorrectly).❌ “The information provided doesn’t match our records. Highlight progress completed instead of work remaining, celebrate small wins, and use an encouraging tone. Designing products that give users a sense of control can significantly improve their experience.Clear escape routes: Always provide obvious ways to exit processes or return to a previous state. Ensure that “back” and “cancel” options are prominently displayed, and confirm before irreversible actions.Save progress automatically: For users with attention difficulties or those who may need to step away suddenly, automatically save their progress so they don’t lose work or have to start over.Customizable experiences: Allow users to adjust aspects of the interface that might be triggering, such as animations, sounds, or high-contrast visuals (source). But when a warming environment flooded a land bridge, it cut off travel between the continents, leading to both the decline of the horses in North America and changes to the land caused by their absence, according to a report in the journal Science by an international team that includes 18 indigenous scientists.The team drew upon both tribal knowledge of environmental events as well as the cutting-edge scientific tools. The study both provides a glimpse of the horse’s history on two continents as well as ways to think about conservation in the future.Grazing and Roaming HorsesHorses, when unfenced, tend to graze in a flower petal pattern around a water source. When the food runs out, they move on to another area and repeat the process. Along the way, they do what horses do — fertilize the land. Horse droppings often contain seeds and attract bugs. Some seeds grow into plants. Some bugs attract animals. When the horse disappears from an area, this process stops.“In this way, the horse is not only responding to change, it is also actually part of the change,” says Yvette Running Horse Collin, a member of the Lakota Nation, a scientist at the University of Toulouse, France, and an author of the paper. “If provided the opportunity, you would find that horses today would also move great distances in response to changes in the environment. In doing so, they provide a great service to all life. Where the horse goes, other life follows.”Ancient Horse FossilsHorses were both agents and objects of change over the past 50,000 years. The scientific team analyzed genomes from 67 ancient horse fossils found across Beringia, Siberia, and continental North America, dated them with radiocarbon and isotopes, and compared the data to all known lineages.The study reveals a wider range of horse genetic diversity during the late Pleistocene period than we see today, as well as long, bi-directional transcontinental migration. For example, some lineages found in Siberian and Iberian fossils show genetic traces of North American horses.The study suggests that not only did the closing of the bridge between continents affect the North American horse population, but other effects of warming made an impact as well. As eras shifted from Pleistocene to Holocene, grasslands turned to wet, boggy tundra unsuitable for horses to graze and difficult for them to travel upon.Climate and Geological ChangeThe authors emphasize that the study shows the necessity of looking at whole systems, not just an individual species to understand the past impacts of climate and geological change. The same applies to future conservation efforts.“In order to have successful conservation efforts for the horse, you must also put in place successful conservation efforts for other forms of life," Collin says. “It is for this reason that one of the research outcomes of this study is to suggest the creation of corridors that would allow life to move — together — as needed."Some tribes involved in the study intend to put those concepts into practice in the Black Hills of South Dakota. GTA 6 delay is to give Rockstar ‘no limitations’ as Take-Two commits to new date Adam Starkey Published May 16, 2025 10:59am Updated May 16, 2025 10:59am GTA 6 looks set to dominate 2026 (Take-Two Interactive) Take-Two Interactive has tried to explain the delay of GTA 6, as it implies a Switch 2 port is out of the question. While the delay of GTA 6 to May 26 next year wasn’t exactly surprising, if you’re familiar with Rockstar’s history, it has still had a sizeable impact on the industry at large. According to reports, the announcement has sparked panic at rival publishers, as they try to avoid the game’s release date, but also worry about another potential delay beyond May 2026. Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, has now commented on the prospect of that happening, as it attempts to provide some reassurance. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the game’s delay in an interview with IGN, where it was described as a necessary move to allow GTA 6 to fulfil its ‘creative vision with no limitations’. ‘As we get closer to completion of a title that’s seeking perfection, the needs or lack thereof, for continued polish become clear,’ Zelnick said. ‘In this case there was an opportunity with a small amount of incremental time, we thought, to make sure Rockstar Games achieves its creative vision with no limitations. And I supported of course that approach.’ Earlier this month, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier claimed the delay to next year ‘seemed inevitable’, due to a mix of ‘too much work, not enough time, and what appears to be a real desire from management to avoid brutal crunch’. Will there be another delay? (Rockstar Games) As for whether Zelnick is confident GTA 6 will hit this new release date, he added: ‘I think historically when we set a specific date, generally speaking, we’ve been very good about reaching it.’ While this comment suggests GTA 6 will not be pushed back again, Zelnick doesn’t rule it out entirely. Rockstar is no stranger to delaying games multiple times either, as seen with Red Dead Redemption 2, so there’s still a chance this could happen with GTA 6. There’s also the fact that Zelnick repeatedly insisted that GTA 6 wasn’t going to be delayed at all… until it was. When it comes to things like that, his primary concern is placating investors, so his comments should be taken with a pinch of salt. Zelnick further addressed the game’s delay during Take-Two’s Q4 2025 earnings call, where he confirmed that GTA 6 began development ‘in earnest’ in 2020. ‘Rockstar expects to release GTA 6 on May 26, 2026, which is in our fiscal year 2027,’ Zelnick said. ‘I believe affording Rockstar additional time for such a groundbreaking project is a worthy investment. ‘The ambition and complexity of GTA 6 is greater than any previous Rockstar title, and the team is poised to release another astonishing entertainment experience that will exceed players’ expectations.’ In a Q&A with investors, Zelnick was asked about the publisher’s support of the Nintendo Switch 2, where he outlined how the company will bring titles to the console on a ‘case-by-case basis’. ‘We’re launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2 [Civilization 7, Borderlands 4, NBA 2K26, and WWE 2K25], and that’s I think a bigger array of releases than we’ve ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform,’ Zelnick said. Historically, being a third party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we’re stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. More Trending ‘In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalogue opportunities as well.’ While the technical requirements of GTA 6 (based on the trailers, at least) seem to rule out any potential Switch 2 port, the last sentence suggests we could see past games in the series on the console – maybe even the rumoured remaster of GTA 4. Elsewhere in the earnings report, Take-Two announced GTA 5 has sold over 215 million copies, a five million increase from February this year. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 sold three million copies within the past three months, bringing its lifetime sales to 74 million. Considering GTA 5 came out over a decade ago in 2013, it’s astonishing that it’s still selling millions of copies all these years later. Coupled with Take-Two’s strong release slate for the rest of this year, it’s perhaps understandable why Take-Two is in no rush to get GTA 6 out the door. Apple says the warning messages now appearing next to EU App Store listings that use third-party payment systems are not actually new. According to a number of recent reports, Apple added a warning with a red exclamation mark next to apps that it found were not using its own “private and secure payment system.” The message was seemingly meant to discourage users from using external payment mechanisms, as is now permitted under the new EU law, the Digital Markets Act (DMA). However, the iPhone maker confirmed to TechCrunch that these user-disclosure screens have been live on the EU App Store since the beginning of Apple’s DMA Compliance Plan back in March 2024. They were not newly added, as some had reported. It’s understandable that there was concern over the warning screens, given that Apple just suffered a major loss in court to Fortnite maker Epic Games. The court’s decision forced Apple to allow app developers in the U.S. to link to external payment options without having to pay Apple’s commission. The company is appealing that decision, and many likely suspected the added EU warnings were part of some sort of retaliatory plan on Apple’s part. Perhaps the company wanted to send a message to developers that it would not give up commissions without a fight? But since the screens are not new, another explanation is in order. The confusion appears to stem from a single post that gained traction on the social network X on Monday. The post shows an App Store listing for an EU-based app called Instacar that features a message warning users, “[T]his app does not support the App Store’s private and secure payment system. Unsurprisingly, most didn’t care for the message, calling it “malicious compliance” and “entitled” behavior on Apple’s part. Opinions aside, the user disclosure screen itself is not new. Apple pointed us to an X post from RevenueCat CEO Jacob Eiting, who, responding directly to Maric, correctly suggested that the disclosures are EU-only and “have been around for a while.” Eiting theorized that people are just now noticing these warnings because few EU developers have bothered to take advantage of the external purchases option that the DMA permits. (Apple critics have called out the company’s DMA Compliance Plan as being confusing and filled with “junk fees” meant to make up for the lost commissions on in-app purchases.) In its response to TechCrunch, Apple also noted that it intended to update the message after initial pushback. In August 2024, the company announced a series of changes to its DMA plan that would have included a change to the user disclosure screen. Instead of warning users of the dangers of using external purchases, the new message would have read: “Transactions in this app are supported by the developer and not Apple.” (See below).
