That’s as per a Gamereactor report, which cites anonymous sources familiar with Rockstar’s plans and claims that Red Dead Redemption 2 is in development for the Nintendo Switch 2. Additionally, the Wild West epic allegedly also has native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in the works. Exactly when these versions will be official announced or when they will release is unknown. The report does vaguely offer details on the supposed enhancements, claiming the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions will tout graphics and performance improvements. A recent leak claimed that Rockstar Games has also had a current-gen version of Grand Theft Auto 4 in the works, along with plans of a Max Payne 3 remaster to go along with Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake, which is in development at Remedy Entertainment. Not so powerful when docked (Nintendo) After publishing ‘incorrect’ information about a Switch 2 feature on its website, Nintendo has issued an apology. While we know most things about the Switch 2, following last month’s blowout, a lot of the finer details took a long time to seep out, via various updates and awkwardly added small print. Nintendo previously published the console’s full specs on its website, which includes HDR10 and 4K support, but last month some people noticed an alteration to the text in relation to its VRR (variable refresh rate) functionality. This feature, which helps eliminate screen tearing without any knocks to the performance, was originally listed as being supported on Switch 2 in either docked or handheld mode. However, a few weeks later, the VRR support for TV play was removed from Nintendo’s website. Now, almost a month later, Nintendo has confirmed the Switch 2 will not support VRR when the console is docked. ‘Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only,’ a statement from Nintendo reads (via Nintendo Life). ‘The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for the error.’ When asked about the possibility of VRR support for docked mode being added in a future firmware update, Nintendo added: ‘We have nothing to announce on this topic.’ Nintendo’s small print strikes again (X) While it does seem possible to add the feature later as an update, it’s still a disappointing hiccup for the Switch 2’s launch, if you mostly play through the TV. It’s unclear why VRR support wouldn’t function across both handheld and docked, but many have speculated it could be related to the difficulty in transferring VRR support through the HDMI converter in the dock. If true, any solutions to the issue might need to come from a future hardware refresh, and not just a minor firmware update. If you want some positive news about the Switch 2’s capabilities, however, Nintendo has outlined the details when it comes to free upgrades for original Switch games. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which were marred by performance issues and bugs on the original Switch, will receive ‘optimised’ visuals on the Switch 2 display and high resolution TVs, along with an ‘improved’ frame rate for ‘smoother movement’. More Trending Several games, like Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom, and ARMS, will receive HDR support, along with visual improvements (although no frame rate boosts for Link’s Awakening, sadly). Super Mario Odyssey, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, 51 Worldwide Games, and Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain will all receive GameShare functionality, along with other visual improvements. Game Builder Garage, meanwhile, is the only title to get mouse support. Surprisingly, the most improved title is Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, which will receive optimised visuals, a better frame rate (Bower’s Fury had some problems in that area), HDR support, and GameShare compatibility. The Mario maker today set the record straight in a comment to Nintendo Life, acknowledging that VRR would only be available when playing Switch 2 in handheld mode. An earlier, now-removed statement on Nintendo's website had not made that distinction, and suggested VRR while docked would also be possible. "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for the error," Nintendo said today. When Nintendo Life probed further on the possibility that Switch 2 VRR support while docked would be added in a future system update, Nintendo said it had "nothing to announce" at the moment. Today marks the first time Nintendo has acknowledged this officially, just days after Digital Foundry reported the lack of docked VRR support in its comprehensive Switch 2 final tech specs report just days ago. "Something that is important to clarify is that as far as Switch 2 developers are concerned, VRR is indeed a function of the internal display only and that there is no support at all right now for VRR over HDMI," Digital Foundry boss Richard Leadbetter wrote. "The best theory we have for this is that the dock's DisplayPort to HDMI converter doesn't support standard HDMI VRR, but whatever is the cause, we would hope to see Nintendo provide some sort of solution in due course." DFC Intelligence, a market research group, has not only claimed that the new console will see rapid sales across the next half-decade, but is also “arguably the most important product launch in video game history” which seems a bit much. Switch 2 sales predictions go haywire According to the research firm’s latest report, via GamesRadar, the new console/handheld hybrid will be “the key driver of industry growth for 2025”, especially following the delay of Rockstar Games’ GTA 6 into next year. The firm explains that the console should sell around 16 million units over the course of 2025, but could hit a yearly milestone of 20 million. If supply and demand are kept in check—which the firm expects they will be—Nintendo will manage to sell 100 million consoles in just five years. This would match the life cycle of the original Nintendo Switch which managed to sell 100 million units by 2022. However, that console’s sales were massively boosted by the higher-than-usual sales of consoles and games as a whole during the COVID-19 pandemic, a fact that has likely affected the later-than-expected release of the Switch 2. As for the console’s importance, the analyst firm claims that the device could be the most important launch of any product in video game history. “The Switch 2, along with the growth of mobile PC game devices, is redefining the landscape of the video game industry.” the firm wrote in its report. “DFC forecasts that by the end of 2029, the Switch 2 will have sold over 100 million units, making it the leading console system by a wide margin.” The firm also claims that the Switch 2’s success over “the next few years could see Nintendo for the first time becoming the primary partner for third-party game publishers.” With the industry already catering to lower-power hardware like the Xbox Series S, this could have actually led the way for Nintendo’s new console to keep pace with third-party releases on next-gen only hardware. Demand for the new console is certainly extremely high, so much so that Nintendo underestimated how many gamers were willing to buy the new machine. But leaks suggest the Switch 2 will employ upscaling technology that can boost 720p resolution visuals up to 4K when docked, using machine learning techniques. Additionally, Switch 2 is rumored to have 12 GB of RAM. Ports Switch 2 features a port for game cartridges, two USB-C ports, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The USB-C port on the bottom of the console is purely for charging and connecting to the dock. A slot for expanded microSD storage appears to be tucked away underneath the Switch 2’s kickstand, similar to the original Switch. Microphone Switch 2 has a built-in microphone that will primarily be used for its Discord-like GameChat feature. It has noise cancellation, echo cancellation, and auto gain control so you don’t have to fuss with settings for it to pick up everyone in the room. Battery life Switch 2’s battery will last around 2 to 6.5 hours depending on the games you play. That’s actually a tiny bit less than the launch Switch 1 models, which can run from 2.6 to 6.5 hours, and considerably less than the updated models that last 4.5 to 9 hours. Blame the Switch 2’s bigger and better screen for making you charge it a little more often. Thankfully, it can be charged up to full in the same three hours it took the original consoles (while in sleep mode). Nintendo will also let Switch 2 owners set the system’s battery charge to slow down at “around 90%” to preserve the system’s battery life. Wi-Fi Switch 2 supports Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, which should make downloading games faster if you have a beefy internet connection. It also means screen-sharing your games over GameChat should be smooth, too. Alternatively, the Switch 2 dock has a wired Ethernet port built-in, unlike the original Switch which required a completely separate adapter. Dock Switch 2’s dock looks a lot like the original Switch’s dock, but it’s a little bigger to match the size of the new console. It comes in at 4.5 inches tall, 7.9 inches wide, and 2 inches thick. On the back, there are 2 USB ports, an HDMI port, and an Ethernet port. And when you slide your system into it, it will output video up to 4K at 60 frames per second to your TV. Accessibility Switch 2 offers a couple new accessibility options that weren’t available on the original Switch, including text sizing and text-to-speech. You can also turn on speech-to-text and text-to-speech specifically for GameChat. And like the original Switch, you can still remap controller buttons, change the display colors, zoom into the screen, and swap the audio from stereo to mono.

While the console’s handheld display supports VRR (variable refresh rate) technology to smooth out inconsistent framerates, the console’s Docked Mode output does not. Just weeks ago, Nintendo removed mentions of VRR support in Docked Mode from its official website for the upcoming console. However, Digital Foundry has now confirmed that developers have been informed of the feature’s absence when connecting the console to a TV. Nintendo Switch 2 loses VRR in Docked Mode In a recent video, Digital Foundry lead Richard Leadbetter confirmed the curious VRR decision in a deep breakdown of the Nintendo Switch 2 components. Backed by a source of developer documentation, it’s stated that the Dock simply doesn’t support VRR. “As far as Switch 2 developers are concerned, VRR, right now at least, is indeed a function of the internal display only and that there is no support at all right now for VRR over HDMI,” Leadbetter explained.” The respected journalist and video games analyst explained that the dock included with the Nintendo Switch 2 might not support the technology due to its older HDMI port. “The best theory that we have for this is that the dock’s Display Port to HDMI connector doesn’t support standard HDMI VRR, but whatever is the cause, we really hope to see Nintendo provide some sort of solution in due course.” With the constrained specifications of the Nintendo Switch 2, VRR support is a fantastic option. As 120Hz screens become more common, 40fps modes are offering great experiences for titles that can’t hit 60fps. For the Switch 2, this type of mode will be possible in Portable Mode, but not in Docked Mode. If this is indeed a hardware issue, the only way to actually bring VRR to Docked Mode would be with a revised dock sometime in the future which would split the user base.
