WASP, an Italian manufacturer of large-scale 3D printing systems for sustainable construction, has partnered with Columbia University’s Natural Materials Lab to support the fabrication of Earthen Rituals, a clay-based installation presented at the 19th Venice Biennale of Architecture. The research focuses on earth and fiber-based building materials. For this latest installation, the lab relied on WASP’s Residency Program to carry out production under a tight schedule. Researchers used the WASP 40100 Production system, designed for continuous custom manufacturing, and the 3MT LDM system equipped with a high-density continuous feeding unit. The project involved the 3D printing of hundreds of earth tiles, made from a mixture of construction waste soils and agricultural by-products. The formulation process drew on a “kitchen approach” informed by vernacular construction methods, including Terracruda (Italian), Lehm (German), Toub Laban (Arabic), and Udongo (Swahili). A digitized process converted earthen textures into printable code. Visual and structural references in the installation include techniques such as rammed earth, weaving, basketry, and figurine-making. The installation, one of 20 rest stations commissioned for the event, included prefabricated panels, cylindrical washbasins, and planter-benches made from a mixture of clay, straw, seaweed glue, pigments, and magnesium oxide hardener. Stone shapes from across Japan were 3D scanned to generate the printed geometries, which were tested for stability and adjusted to meet overhang tolerances. Production took place in Toyama, with elements transported to the Expo site and installed onto timber frameworks using embedded wooden inserts. It's this last point that often keeps IT leaders awake at night. Addressing risk prior to launching an IT project is crucial, since it helps to set clear expectations, identify potential obstacles, and create a roadmap for handling unforeseen challenges, says Anbang Xu, founder of JoggAI, an AI-powered video platform, and a former senior product manager at Apple and senior software engineer at Google. "Particularly when it comes to AI-driven projects, understanding the risks -- whether they're related to technology, data security, scalability, or talent -- can make the difference between a smooth launch and a failed initiative," he observes in an email interview. "By addressing these concerns early, you also ensure that resources are allocated effectively, and your team is better equipped to handle surprises." Building a strong mechanism to address risk during project planning is crucial to ensure that all decisions are made with transparency into cost, benefit, and risk, says Ola Chowning, a partner with technology research and advisory firm ISG. "Project decisions that don't estimate risk and its tangible or intangible impacts at the start, or even during a project, likely don't have the data needed to make informed decisions and balance cost, risk, and benefit," she explains in an online interview. MediaTek Dimensity 9400e was unveiled in China on Wednesday as the latest chipset for mobile devices from the Taiwan-based chipmaker. It will compete against the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset from Qualcomm. The Dimensity 9400e features an All Big Core CPU architecture, with four Cortex-X4 cores clocked at 3.4GHz and a 12-core Immortalis-G720 GPU with support for hardware ray tracing. The new chipset also supports on-device operation of several large language models, and enables support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity.MediaTek Dimensity 9400e Availability TimelineThe new MediaTek Dimensity 9400e will be available on smartphones in the coming weeks, according to the company. It has four Arm Cortex-X4 cores with a peak clock speed of 3.4GHz and four Cortex-A720 big cores clocked at 2GHz. The Dimensity 9400e features a 12-core Immortalis-G720 GPU that supports hardware-level mobile ray tracing.The chipmaker has also equipped the Dimensity 9400e with a MediaTek APU 790 which will enable support for generative AI features on smartphones and other mobile devices. It supports on-device processing for large language models like DeepSeek-R1-Distill (Qwen1.5B/Llama7B/Llama8B) models, as well as Gemini Nano with Multimodality and LLaVA-1.5 7B. Smartphones equipped with the Dimensity 9400e will offer support for Wi-Fi 7, 5G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 6.0, GPS, and NavIC. They can be equipped with a 320-megapixel rear camera and support video recording at up to 8K/ 30fps or 4K/ 60fps. Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 will continue to receive updates after the company drops support for the older version of its desktop operating system. The Redmond-based tech giant recently updated its support page to announce that the Microsoft 365 apps (also known as Office apps) will continue to get security updates on Windows 10 until 2028. The company made a U-turn on its previous decision to drop support for these apps on the older OS version after October 14. Microsoft has been aggressively pushing businesses and individuals to upgrade to Windows 11. This is likely because the Copilot suite of artificial intelligence (AI) features is only available on the latest version of Windows.Microsoft Decides to Keep Updating Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10In its updated support article, the tech giant now says, “Microsoft will continue providing security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 for three years after Windows 10 reaches end of support.” These will be available via the company's standard update channels, and end on October 10, 2028. The company said that the extension was provided to help maintain security while users transition to Windows 11.Even if users do not upgrade to Windows 11 after the support ends, they will be able to use the Office apps. However, as Microsoft notes in the document, using an unsupported operating system can cause performance and reliability issues. Further, without security updates, these systems are also vulnerable to malware, viruses, and hacking attempts.Microsoft has been aggressively pushing Windows 10 users to upgrade to the latest generation. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, the tech giant declared the ongoing year as “the year of the Windows 11 PC refresh.” The push is understandable, given that the company is heavily investing in Copilot+ PCs, which come equipped with a range of AI features.The company has also created subscription tiers for both enterprises and individuals to access these AI features. However, Microsoft will not be able to fully monetise its offerings unless its entire user base can access these features. But a marketing push might not be enough.
