    You never know who you might meet on a plane. Four years ago, ELLE Decor A-List designer James Huniford, known as Ford, began chatting with the gentleman across the aisle. Both have children, and both spend time in the Hamptons, so they had a lot to talk about. The man mentioned he was hoping to buy land in the Hamptons for a vacation house. Huniford encouraged him and handed over his business card. But after landing, the designer gave no further thought to the encounter, so he was surprised when, several months later, the man’s wife called.The couple, who had rented in the Hamptons for years, had found an idyllic site on a peninsula in Sag Harbor, private but close to town. Though their city home is traditional, they chose William Reue, a New York architect known for crisp, modernist geometry, to design the house. He conceived of a three-story home with six bedrooms, large enough for the couple and a parade of guests, including their four grown children and their partners. Landscape designer Edmund Hollander, renowned for projects such as the public garden at the Kennedy Center in Washington, was brought in to envision an environment worthy of the setting. Pernille LoofEven before the foundations were poured, the couple invited Huniford to the site. They made it clear that they didn’t want either a conventional shingled beach house or a stark white box. “They told me, no trends,” he says. “They wanted a sense of playfulness. And they love color.” The man’s wife explained exactly what she wanted: “A house where I feel like I’m on vacation every time I step inside. And even when I am inside, I want to feel like I’m outside.” In some ways Huniford was an unexpected choice, since he is not often tapped for sleek, contemporary interiors. But he proved to be a wise one. He has an eclectic eye that can discern the beauty in a rusted tool or an old road sign, in rough-hewn beams or a clunky Victorian washstand. He juxtaposes these disparate elements with clean-lined furnishings, in restrained but never cold spaces. Over the past two decades he has designed apartments and country houses for a variety of people in the worlds of finance, media, and entertainment, including Broadway producers Jeffrey Seller and John Gore. “I never doubted thatwas the right person,” the wife says. “I knew the house would be beautiful. To soften this home’s geometry, Huniford filled the rooms with craftsmanship, incorporating both vintage furnishings and commissioned items. The dramatic wood staircase was based on one he had spotted at an antiques dealer on the Left Bank in Paris. The den’s paneling is inset with butter-fly joints evocative of iconic designer George Nakashima’s woodworking techniques.Huniford divided the huge living area into zones, creating a sense of loft living at the beach. Wit and color are equally evident: in the dressing room’s postmodern “Queen Anne” chair by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown; in the kitchen’s gold-streaked stone, which the designer dubs “Cy Twombly marble”; and in the powder room lined in Yves Klein–blue parchment.Huniford’s good fortune on this project extended beyond the initial chance encounter.     Hamptons home sales are booming despite stock market volatility and recession fears.
    Home sales were up about 86% in the first quarter over the same time period in 2024.
    Prices and sales are soaring in the beach destination despite Wall Street volatility.

    As Wall Street reels with every twist and turn in President Donald Trump's trade war, there's little sign of economic uncertainty in Manhattan's favorite beach destination just 100 miles east.Demand for luxury real estate in the Hamptons is only growing. Sales and home prices have surged over the last year.Rising prices in the tony enclave are nothing new. The pandemic ushered in a surge of buyers looking to escape the city. The median sales price of homes in the Hamptons in the first quarter of 2025 was more than million, a 13% increase over the previous year and nearly double what it was five years ago, according to a recent Douglas Elliman report.Perhaps more notably, the pace of sales is also soaring this year. Sales were up about 86% in the first quarter over the same time period last year, according to the Douglas Elliman report. That's after home sales fell in the wake of the pandemic buying frenzy, and haven't returned to the highs of 2020."The tired story of the housing recovery coming out of the pandemic is high prices, low sales," Jonathan Miller, who leads the real estate appraisal and consulting firm Miller Samuel and authored the Douglas Elliman report, told Business Insider. "The Hamptons doesn't fit that pattern. It's high prices and high sales."Miller added that the sharp rise in sales is "unusual and counter to the prevailing trends."Susan Breitenbach, a top Hamptons real estate agent with the Corcoran Group, said she's closed more deals so far this year than in all of 2024. She's sold a slew of luxury homes, including a million oceanfront property in Bridgehampton, an Amagansett home for million, a Sag Harbor home on less than an acre for million, and a Southampton house for million.
    "It was really very surprising," Breitenbach, who's been selling property in the Hamptons for more than 30 years, told BI.

    While some agents like Breitenbach are closing deals at the highest end of the market, the middle of the Hamptons market — homes between million and million — has driven the uptick in sales. These "meat and potatoes" sales, Miller said, are way up.So-called "tangible assets," like luxury real estate in very in-demand markets, can be particularly attractive to certain investors when markets are wobbly.Global stocks plummeted following Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs announcement, and while they've mostly rebounded since the administration walked back some of their tariffs, markets are on edge. In early June, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development cut its forecast for the US economic growth rate in 2025 from 2.8% to 1.6%, citing Trump's trade policies."Hamptons real estate has a long history of appreciating over time," Andrew Saunders, president of the Hamptons real estate brokerage Saunders & Associates, told BI. Some more cautious buyers "might look at what's happening in the world at large and say, 'You know what, I'm going to wait a month or two and let the world take a few spins and see what happens.' But we're not seeing that occur en masse."Miller credited big Wall Street bonuses in 2024 for some of the spike in sales and agreed that market volatility could be pushing some to diversify their investments.The Hamptons rental market might be more sensitive to economic uncertainty. Breitenbach said rental interest was much higher than usual in January but has since fallen off. Miller, who doesn't track rentals in the Hamptons, added that an increase in sales would naturally lead to a drop in rental demand.Breitenbach recently listed a home on 2.5 acres of oceanfront property in Water Mill, which sits between Southampton and Bridgehampton, for million. "It's not about the house, it's about the land," she added. "And that's a deal."

    Hamptons buyers are from all over. Breitenbach said she's seen an uptick in California buyers this year, and she still has foreign buyers. But a large share of her clients are still Manhattanites."A lot of it is the high-end New York — Manhattan — buyers, because there aren't many places they can go on the weekends," she said.Breitenbach said Memorial Day weekend this year felt more packed than ever out east, even with cooler-than-normal weather. "It looked like Fourth of July," she said.She doesn't expect market volatility and even threats of a recession to change that."It's going to be a busy summer in the Hamptons regardless," Breitenbach said. "People keep coming out here no matter what's going on."

  • A federal court’s novel proposal to rein in Trump’s power grab

Federal civil servants are supposed to enjoy robust protections against being fired or demoted for political reasons. But President Donald Trump has effectively stripped them of these protections by neutralizing the federal agencies that implement these safeguards.An agency known as the Merit Systems Protection Boardhears civil servants’ claims that a “government employer discriminated against them, retaliated against them for whistleblowing, violated protections for veterans, or otherwise subjected them to an unlawful adverse employment action or prohibited personnel practice,” as a federal appeals court explained in an opinion on Tuesday. But the three-member board currently lacks the quorum it needs to operate because Trump fired two of the members.Trump also fired Hampton Dellinger, who until recently served as the special counsel of the United States, a role that investigates alleged violations of federal civil service protections and brings related cases to the MSPB. Trump recently nominated Paul Ingrassia, a far-right podcaster and recent law school graduate to replace Dellinger.The upshot of these firings is that no one in the government is able to enforce laws and regulations protecting civil servants. As Dellinger noted in an interview, the morning before a federal appeals court determined that Trump could fire him, he’d “been able to get 6,000 newly hired federal employees back on the job,” and was working to get “all probationary employees put back on the jobtheir unlawful firing” by the Department of Government Efficiency and other Trump administration efforts to cull the federal workforce.   • ‘Tate’s Bake Shop Cookbook’ Is a Pleasant Throwback to a Simpler Age

While finding a particular recipe online serves a quick purpose, flipping through a truly excellent cookbook has a magic all its own. My cookbook of the week is often a hot new release, unless I decide to spotlight one that has been out for a few years. But I haven’t done a real throwback cookbook in a while. My very first cookbook of the week was Hershey’s Best-Loved Recipes, and while not quite as old, this week’s selection has been my trusted companion for quite some time. This week I chose to highlight Tate’s Bake Shop Cookbook not only because it is packed withrecipes for fabulous sweet treats, but because it always offers a nice break from the annoyances of modern internet baking.A bit about the bookTate’s Bake Shop is an actual bakery in the Hamptons on Long Island. It’s a small shop with creaky wooden floors and a warm atmosphere—at least that’s how I remember it from when I worked in Bridgehampton for a summer. I would occasionally pop in and grab some cookies, but this was long before I realized they were the Tate’s Cookies—before their green bags started popping up in every grocery store cookie aisle. You may have tried the crispy, flat cookies Tate’s is now famous for, but did you know that they make more than cookies?This cookbook is from the founder of Tate’s Bake Shop, Kathleen King. It turns out she makes a heck of a cookie...and a heck of a pie, and scone, and blueberry buckle. I love Tate's Bake Shop Cookbook because it’s filled with reliable, classic bakes. The entire Tate's brand is built on homemade, cozy, old-fashioned vibes, and that’s what you'll find in the pages of this cookbook. There’s nothing flashy about it. It’s not striving to be a part of your coffee table decor. The recipes are mostly one-pagers with short head notes and simple text, and you’ll only find pictures in the center section. This is a cookbook that’s meant to be dog-eared, annotated, used by your kids, and accidentally splattered with flour—a cookbook made to be loved.A great cookbook for a spoon and a bowlWhile I’ve owned this cookbook for nearly 15 years, I haven’t cracked it open in a while. I meandered through the recipes and marked some titles that caught my eye, or that I remembered being tasty. As I read through the short directions, I noticed some trends: most of the recipes are mixed by hand, several recipes are from family or friends, and King uses salted butter without a care in the world for anyone else's opinion. Seeing a cookbook, especially a baking cookbook, filled with short, easy to follow recipes is a breath of fresh air. Recipes that don’t require the use of an electric mixer are almost too good to be true. But here it is, each recipe is enticing in its simplicity: Sour Cream Pound Cake, Chocolate Jumbles, Sticky Toffee Date Pudding, and the recipe for the famous chocolate chip cookie that you know from the store. Reading these recipes feels almost soothing. Dramatic, I know. But I often feel like social media recipes and newer cookbooks are throwing everything at me at once to catch my attention. This cookbook seems less an attempt at impressing readers with being on trend or shocking us with new flavor combinations, and more like a collection of personal favorite recipes from your hometown baker. Baking from this cookbook feels like pastry meditation. No need to plug in an appliance or pause a YouTube video. Grab a bowl and a wooden spoon and take a moment to make something delicious. It’s great for a beginner baker, or anyone who enjoys baking in theory but hates dirtying too many bowls, or when recipes get complicated.The dish I baked this week

    I love a cookie, but we already know how good the Tate’s cookie is, so I wanted to showcase something else. Luckily, blueberry season is here, and that made my decision for me. I settled on the Blueberry Buckle. Without taking a picture of the actual recipe, I want to illustrate the simplicity of this buckle: The instructions for the whole cake, with a crumb topping, are completed in 12 lines. The headnote includes a three-sentence story about how it won a bake-off in Maine, and how King’s niece improved the crumb texture. If you’ve ever just wanted a recipe to cut to the chase, this is it.A buckle is a cake-like treat with a crumb topping and fresh fruit mixed into it.The cake batter is easy to stir together by hand. Employing salted butter eliminates worrying about measuring yet another ingredient, and all of the other ingredients were readily available in my pantry. In roughly 15 minutes, I was ready to throw an entire cake into the oven. I don’t know that I’ve had a buckle before, but I definitely would have voted for this to win that bake-off. The cake component is utterly tender, and I don’t really know why or how—there’s no sour cream or buttermilk involved. It must just be a perfect balance of tenderizing fat and strengthening gluten. The ratio of blueberries to cake is also perfect. I know folks are always begging for more berries, but if you have too many then the berries sink or they make the cake too wet. The crumb topping is exactly as it should be—sweet, buttery, and lightly spiced. It’s good enough to eat on its own. I could see myself making this buckle for a picnic, or a friend’s summer birthday brunch. While finding a particular recipe online serves a quick purpose, flipping through a truly excellent cookbook has a magic all its own. My cookbook of the week is often a hot new release, unless I decide to spotlight one that has been out for a few years. But I haven’t done a real throwback cookbook in a while. My very first cookbook of the week was Hershey’s Best-Loved Recipes, and while not quite as old, this week’s selection has been my trusted companion for quite some time. This week I chose to highlight Tate’s Bake Shop Cookbook not only because it is packed withrecipes for fabulous sweet treats, but because it always offers a nice break from the annoyances of modern internet baking.A bit about the bookTate’s Bake Shop is an actual bakery in the Hamptons on Long Island. It’s a small shop with creaky wooden floors and a warm atmosphere—at least that’s how I remember it from when I worked in Bridgehampton for a summer. I would occasionally pop in and grab some cookies, but this was long before I realized they were the Tate’s Cookies—before their green bags started popping up in every grocery store cookie aisle. You may have tried the crispy, flat cookies Tate’s is now famous for, but did you know that they make more than cookies?This cookbook is from the founder of Tate’s Bake Shop, Kathleen King. It turns out she makes a heck of a cookie...and a heck of a pie, and scone, and blueberry buckle. I love Tate's Bake Shop Cookbook because it’s filled with reliable, classic bakes. The entire Tate's brand is built on homemade, cozy, old-fashioned vibes, and that’s what you'll find in the pages of this cookbook. There’s nothing flashy about it. It’s not striving to be a part of your coffee table decor. The recipes are mostly one-pagers with short head notes and simple text, and you’ll only find pictures in the center section. This is a cookbook that’s meant to be dog-eared, annotated, used by your kids, and accidentally splattered with flour—a cookbook made to be loved.A great cookbook for a spoon and a bowlWhile I’ve owned this cookbook for nearly 15 years, I haven’t cracked it open in a while. I meandered through the recipes and marked some titles that caught my eye, or that I remembered being tasty. As I read through the short directions, I noticed some trends: most of the recipes are mixed by hand, several recipes are from family or friends, and King uses salted butter without a care in the world for anyone else's opinion. Seeing a cookbook, especially a baking cookbook, filled with short, easy to follow recipes is a breath of fresh air. Recipes that don’t require the use of an electric mixer are almost too good to be true. But here it is, each recipe is enticing in its simplicity: Sour Cream Pound Cake, Chocolate Jumbles, Sticky Toffee Date Pudding, and the recipe for the famous chocolate chip cookie that you know from the store. Reading these recipes feels almost soothing. Dramatic, I know. But I often feel like social media recipes and newer cookbooks are throwing everything at me at once to catch my attention. This cookbook seems less an attempt at impressing readers with being on trend or shocking us with new flavor combinations, and more like a collection of personal favorite recipes from your hometown baker. Baking from this cookbook feels like pastry meditation. No need to plug in an appliance or pause a YouTube video. Grab a bowl and a wooden spoon and take a moment to make something delicious. It’s great for a beginner baker, or anyone who enjoys baking in theory but hates dirtying too many bowls, or when recipes get complicated.The dish I baked this week Credit: Allie Chanthorn Reinmann I love a cookie, but we already know how good the Tate’s cookie is, so I wanted to showcase something else. Luckily, blueberry season is here, and that made my decision for me. I settled on the Blueberry Buckle. Without taking a picture of the actual recipe, I want to illustrate the simplicity of this buckle: The instructions for the whole cake, with a crumb topping, are completed in 12 lines. The headnote includes a three-sentence story about how it won a bake-off in Maine, and how King’s niece improved the crumb texture. If you’ve ever just wanted a recipe to cut to the chase, this is it.A buckle is a cake-like treat with a crumb topping and fresh fruit mixed into it.The cake batter is easy to stir together by hand. Employing salted butter eliminates worrying about measuring yet another ingredient, and all of the other ingredients were readily available in my pantry. In roughly 15 minutes, I was ready to throw an entire cake into the oven. I don’t know that I’ve had a buckle before, but I definitely would have voted for this to win that bake-off. The cake component is utterly tender, and I don’t really know why or how—there’s no sour cream or buttermilk involved. It must just be a perfect balance of tenderizing fat and strengthening gluten. The ratio of blueberries to cake is also perfect. I know folks are always begging for more berries, but if you have too many then the berries sink or they make the cake too wet. The crumb topping is exactly as it should be—sweet, buttery, and lightly spiced. It’s good enough to eat on its own. I could see myself making this buckle for a picnic, or a friend’s summer birthday brunch.     Hans Noë wore many hats—architect, sculptor, Fanelli Cafe proprietor. He was also a Holocaust survivor, and a protégé of Tony Smith, Barnett Newman, and Mies van der Rohe. Noë died in his sleep on May 11 at his home in Garrison, New York, at age 96.
    Alva Noë, his son, confirmed his death for The New York Times.

    Noë had a retrospective in 2023 at New York’s National Museum of Mathematics curated by author Lawrence Weschler, reviewed by AN. This was just one of two solo shows the indelible artist had his entire life—the first was in 2021 at the Fireplace Project in East Hampton, New York.
    The deceased’s retrospectives were always by invitation of someone else, he never sought them out. That’s partially from trauma he carried with him since fleeing his childhood home in Czernowitz, a city in the Bukovinian region on the edge of the Austro-Hungarian empire in what is now southwestern Ukraine.
    House 1, East Hampton, New York c.1963Noë was born in 1928. He saw the magisterial central synagogue just down the street from his Jewish family’s home get torched by the fascist Romanian army not long after. He spent his remaining teenage years hiding from the Gestapo.
    This trauma followed Noë wherever he went; his family immigrated from Europe to New York City on Christmas Day, 1949. In the handful of interviews he later gave, like those with Weschler, Noë said any glimmer of the limelight made him panic. He later admitted he had PTSD.

    After immigrating, Noë enrolled at Cooper Union, where he studied under Tony Smith, the subject of a new book edited by James Voorhies and Sarah Auld. There, he also met Barnett Newman, and stretched canvasses for Mark Rothko. He was in the same orbit as Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, Theodoros Stamos, and others.
    Noë told Weschler in 2023: “When it came to art, Tony became my father and Barney my uncle.” Noë later enrolled at the Illinois Institute of Technologyand studied under Mies van der Rohe. At IIT, he met a ceramics student, Judy Baldwin. They got married in 1960.

There, between 1963 and 1971, Noë designed and built 12 houses with his partner Richard Schust.     “I came to realize how a successful architect has to be not one but three things: he has to be a great architect, he has to be a great self-promoter, and he has to be a great businessman. And I was only one of those three,” Noë told Weschler in conversation.

    It was around this time when Noë started buying up properties in Soho, and renting them to artists. Noë bought Fanelli Cafe in the early-1970s. “When you opened the door” at Fanelli, Sasha Noë said, “the wind would come in, and it would make everyone cold. So he built a little half wall out of glass to keep people warm. But he didn’t make it look like it was built in 1847. He used his Mies van der Rohe knowledge to do it. He didn’t try to fake it.”
    Fanelli Cafe became a New York City staple, and Noë and Baldwin eventually moved to Garrison, New York, where they raised their family. There, he produced geometric wooden maquettes imbued with subtle poetic meaning—all in relative isolation and without celebration.

    For a couple of years now, I've been trying to find an excuse to buy a decent 3D printer.
    Friends and fellow Ars staffers who had them would gush about them at every opportunity, talking about how useful they can be and how much can be printed once you get used to the idea of being able to create real, tangible objects with a little time and a few bucks' worth of plastic filament.
    But I could never quite imagine myself using one consistently enough to buy one. Then, this past Christmas, my wife forced the issue by getting me a Bambu Lab A1 as a present.
    Since then, I've been tinkering with the thing nearly daily, learning more about what I've gotten myself into and continuing to find fun and useful things to print. I've gathered a bunch of thoughts about my learning process here, not because I think I'm breaking new ground but to serve as a blueprint for anyone who has been on the fence about Getting Into 3D Printing. "Hyperfixating on new hobbies" is one of my go-to coping mechanisms during times of stress and anxiety, and 3D printing has turned out to be the perfect combination of fun, practical, and time-consuming.

But as a beginner, I'm already leaning mostly on the first-party tools and built-in functionality to get everything going, so I'm not really experiencing the sense of having "lost" features I was relying on, and any concerns I did have are mostly addressed by Bambu's update about its update.

I was wary of getting into yet another hobby where, like building your own gaming PC, fiddling with and maintaining the equipment is part of the hobby. Bambu's printersare capable of turning out fairly high-quality prints with minimal fuss, and nothing will draw you into the hobby faster than a few successful prints.

    First things first: The A1 is what’s called an “extrusion” printer, meaning that it functions by melting a long, slim thread of plasticand then depositing this plastic onto a build plate seated on top of a heated bed in tens, hundreds, or even thousands of thin layers. In the manufacturing world, this is also called “fused deposition modeling,” or FDM. This layer-based extrusion gives 3D-printed objects their distinct ridged look and feel and is also why a 3D printed piece of plastic is less detailed-looking and weaker than an injection-molded piece of plastic like a Lego brick.
    The other readily available home 3D printing technology takes liquid resin and uses UV light to harden it into a plastic structure, using a process called “stereolithography”. You can get inexpensive resin printers in the same price range as the best cheap extrusion printers, and the SLA process can create much more detailed, smooth-looking, and watertight 3D prints. Some downsides are that the print beds in these printers are smaller, resin is a bit fussier than filament, and multi-color printing isn’t possible.
    There are two main types of home extrusion printers. The Bambu A1 is a Cartesian printer, or in more evocative and colloquial terms, a "bed slinger." In these, the head of the printer can move up and down on one or two rails and from side to side on another rail. But the print bed itself has to move forward and backward to "move" the print head on the Y axis.

    More expensive home 3D printers, including higher-end Bambu models in the P- and X-series, are "CoreXY" printers, which include a third rail or set of railsthat allow the print head to travel in all three directions.
    The A1 is also an "open-bed" printer, which means that it ships without an enclosure. Closed-bed printers are more expensive, but they can maintain a more consistent temperature inside and help contain the fumes from the melted plastic. They can also reduce the amount of noise coming from your printer.
    Together, the downsides of a bed-slingerand an open-bed printermainly just mean that the A1 isn't well-suited for printing certain types of plastic and has more potential points of failure for large or delicate prints. My experience with the A1 has been mostly positive now that I know about those limitations, but the printer you buy could easily change based on what kinds of things you want to print with it.
    Setting up
    Overall, the setup process was reasonably simple, at least for someone who has been building PCs and repairing small electronics for years now. It's not quite the same as the "take it out of the box, remove all the plastic film, and plug it in" process of setting up a 2D printer, but the directions in the start guide are well-illustrated and clearly written; if you can put together prefab IKEA furniture, that's roughly the level of complexity we're talking about here. The fact that delicate electronics are involved might still make it more intimidating for the non-technical, but figuring out what goes where is fairly simple.

    The only mistake I made while setting the printer up involved the surface I initially tried to put it on. I used a spare end table, but as I discovered during the printer's calibration process, the herky-jerky movement of the bed and print head was way too much for a little table to handle. "Stable enough to put a lamp on" is not the same as "stable enough to put a constantly wobbling contraption" on—obvious in retrospect, but my being new to this is why this article exists.
    After some office rearrangement, I was able to move the printer to my sturdy L-desk full of cables and other doodads to serve as ballast. This surface was more than sturdy enough to let the printer complete its calibration process—and sturdy enough not to transfer the printer's every motion to our kid's room below, a boon for when I'm trying to print something after he has gone to bed.
    The first-party Bambu apps for sending files to the printer are Bambu Handyand Bambu Studio. Handy works OK for sending ready-made models from MakerWorldand for monitoring prints once they've started. But I'll mostly be relaying my experience with Bambu Studio, a much more fully featured app. Neither app requires sign-in, at least not yet, but the path of least resistance is to sign into your printer and apps with the same account to enable easy communication and syncing.

    For any newbie, pretty much all you need to do is connect your printer, open a .3MF or .STL file you've downloaded from MakerWorld or elsewhere, select your filament from the drop-down menu, click "slice plate," and then click "print." Things like the default 0.4 mm nozzle size and Bambu's included Textured PEI Build Plate are generally already factored in, though you may need to double-check these selections when you open a file for the first time.

    When selecting filament, people who stick to Bambu's first-party spools will have the easiest time, since optimal settings are already programmed into the app. But I've had almost zero trouble with the "generic" presets and the spools of generic Inland-branded filament I've bought from our local Micro Center, at least when sticking to PLA. But we'll dive deeper into plastics in part 2 of this series.

    I won't pretend I'm skilled enough to do a deep dive on every single setting that Bambu Studio gives you access to, but here are a few of the odds and ends I've found most useful:

    The "clone" function, accessed by right-clicking an object and clicking "clone." Useful if you'd like to fit several copies of an object on the build plate at once, especially if you're using a filament with a color gradient and you'd like to make the gradient effect more pronounced by spreading it out over a bunch of prints.

Did you delete an individual object from a model because you didn't need to print that part? Bambu Studio will arrange everything on your build plate to optimize the use of space.
    Layer height, located in the sidebar directly beneath "Process". Thicker layer heights do the opposite, slightly reducing the amount of time a model takes to print but preserving less detail.
    Infill percentage and wall loops, located in the Strength tab beneath the "Process" sidebar item. For most everyday prints, you don't need to worry about messing with these settings much; the infill percentage determines the amount of your print's interior that's plastic and the part that's empty space. The number of wall loops determines how many layers the printer uses for the outside surface of the print, with more walls using more plastic but also adding a bit of extra strength and rigidity to functional prints that need it.

    When given the opportunity to use a 3D printer, my mind went first to aggressively practical stuff—prints for organizing the odds and ends that eternally float around my office or desk.
    When we moved into our current house, only one of the bedrooms had a ceiling fan installed. I put up remote-controlled ceiling fans in all the other bedrooms myself. And all those fans, except one, came with a wall-mounted caddy to hold the remote control. The first thing I decided to print was a wall-mounted holder for that remote control.
    MakerWorld is just one of several resources for ready-made 3D-printable files, but the ease with which I found a Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan Remote Wall Mount is pretty representative of my experience so far. At this point in the life cycle of home 3D printing, if you can think about it and it's not a terrible idea, you can usually find someone out there who has made something close to what you're looking for.
    I loaded up my black roll of PLA plastic—generally the cheapest, easiest-to-buy, easiest-to-work-with kind of 3D printer filament, though not always the best for prints that need more structural integrity—into the basic roll-holder that comes with the A1, downloaded that 3MF file, opened it in Bambu Studio, sliced the file, and hit print. It felt like there should have been extra steps in there somewhere. But that's all it took to kick the printer into action.
    After a few minutes of warmup—by default, the A1 has a thorough pre-print setup process where it checks the levelness of the bed and tests the flow rate of your filament for a few minutes before it begins printing anything—the nozzle started laying plastic down on my build plate, and inside of an hour or so, I had my first 3D-printed object.

    It wears off a bit after you successfully execute a print, but I still haven't quite lost the feeling of magic of printing out a fully 3D object that comes off the plate and then just exists in space along with me and all the store-bought objects in my office.

But it was an easy success to start off with, and that success can help embolden you and draw you in, inviting more printing and more experimentation. Friends and fellow Ars staffers who had them would gush about them at every opportunity, talking about how useful they can be and how much can be printed once you get used to the idea of being able to create real, tangible objects with a little time and a few bucks' worth of plastic filament. But I could never quite imagine myself using one consistently enough to buy one. Then, this past Christmas, my wife forced the issue by getting me a Bambu Lab A1 as a present. Since then, I've been tinkering with the thing nearly daily, learning more about what I've gotten myself into and continuing to find fun and useful things to print. I've gathered a bunch of thoughts about my learning process here, not because I think I'm breaking new ground but to serve as a blueprint for anyone who has been on the fence about Getting Into 3D Printing. "Hyperfixating on new hobbies" is one of my go-to coping mechanisms during times of stress and anxiety, and 3D printing has turned out to be the perfect combination of fun, practical, and time-consuming. Getting to know my printer My wife settled on the Bambu A1 because it's a larger version of the A1 Mini, Wirecutter's main 3D printer pick at the time (she also noted it was "hella on sale"). Other reviews she read noted that it's beginner-friendly, easy to use, and fun to tinker with, and it has a pretty active community for answering questions, all assessments I agree with so far. Note that this research was done some months before Bambu earned bad headlines because of firmware updates that some users believe will lead to a more locked-down ecosystem. This is a controversy I understand—3D printers are still primarily the realm of DIYers and tinkerers, people who are especially sensitive to the closing of open ecosystems. But as a beginner, I'm already leaning mostly on the first-party tools and built-in functionality to get everything going, so I'm not really experiencing the sense of having "lost" features I was relying on, and any concerns I did have are mostly addressed by Bambu's update about its update. I hadn't really updated my preconceived notions of what home 3D printing was since its primordial days, something Ars has been around long enough to have covered in some depth. I was wary of getting into yet another hobby where, like building your own gaming PC, fiddling with and maintaining the equipment is part of the hobby. Bambu's printers (and those like them) are capable of turning out fairly high-quality prints with minimal fuss, and nothing will draw you into the hobby faster than a few successful prints. Basic terminology Extrusion-based 3D printers (also sometimes called "FDM," for "fused deposition modeling") work by depositing multiple thin layers of melted plastic filament on a heated bed. Credit: Andrew Cunningham First things first: The A1 is what’s called an “extrusion” printer, meaning that it functions by melting a long, slim thread of plastic (filament) and then depositing this plastic onto a build plate seated on top of a heated bed in tens, hundreds, or even thousands of thin layers. In the manufacturing world, this is also called “fused deposition modeling,” or FDM. This layer-based extrusion gives 3D-printed objects their distinct ridged look and feel and is also why a 3D printed piece of plastic is less detailed-looking and weaker than an injection-molded piece of plastic like a Lego brick. The other readily available home 3D printing technology takes liquid resin and uses UV light to harden it into a plastic structure, using a process called “stereolithography” (SLA). You can get inexpensive resin printers in the same price range as the best cheap extrusion printers, and the SLA process can create much more detailed, smooth-looking, and watertight 3D prints (it’s popular for making figurines for tabletop games). Some downsides are that the print beds in these printers are smaller, resin is a bit fussier than filament, and multi-color printing isn’t possible. There are two main types of home extrusion printers. The Bambu A1 is a Cartesian printer, or in more evocative and colloquial terms, a "bed slinger." In these, the head of the printer can move up and down on one or two rails and from side to side on another rail. But the print bed itself has to move forward and backward to "move" the print head on the Y axis. More expensive home 3D printers, including higher-end Bambu models in the P- and X-series, are "CoreXY" printers, which include a third rail or set of rails (and more Z-axis rails) that allow the print head to travel in all three directions. The A1 is also an "open-bed" printer, which means that it ships without an enclosure. Closed-bed printers are more expensive, but they can maintain a more consistent temperature inside and help contain the fumes from the melted plastic. They can also reduce the amount of noise coming from your printer. Together, the downsides of a bed-slinger (introducing more wobble for tall prints, more opportunities for parts of your print to come loose from the plate) and an open-bed printer (worse temperature, fume, and dust control) mainly just mean that the A1 isn't well-suited for printing certain types of plastic and has more potential points of failure for large or delicate prints. My experience with the A1 has been mostly positive now that I know about those limitations, but the printer you buy could easily change based on what kinds of things you want to print with it. Setting up Overall, the setup process was reasonably simple, at least for someone who has been building PCs and repairing small electronics for years now. It's not quite the same as the "take it out of the box, remove all the plastic film, and plug it in" process of setting up a 2D printer, but the directions in the start guide are well-illustrated and clearly written; if you can put together prefab IKEA furniture, that's roughly the level of complexity we're talking about here. The fact that delicate electronics are involved might still make it more intimidating for the non-technical, but figuring out what goes where is fairly simple. The only mistake I made while setting the printer up involved the surface I initially tried to put it on. I used a spare end table, but as I discovered during the printer's calibration process, the herky-jerky movement of the bed and print head was way too much for a little table to handle. "Stable enough to put a lamp on" is not the same as "stable enough to put a constantly wobbling contraption" on—obvious in retrospect, but my being new to this is why this article exists. After some office rearrangement, I was able to move the printer to my sturdy L-desk full of cables and other doodads to serve as ballast. This surface was more than sturdy enough to let the printer complete its calibration process—and sturdy enough not to transfer the printer's every motion to our kid's room below, a boon for when I'm trying to print something after he has gone to bed. The first-party Bambu apps for sending files to the printer are Bambu Handy (for iOS/Android, with no native iPad version) and Bambu Studio (for Windows, macOS, and Linux). Handy works OK for sending ready-made models from MakerWorld (a mostly community-driven but Bambu-developer repository for 3D printable files) and for monitoring prints once they've started. But I'll mostly be relaying my experience with Bambu Studio, a much more fully featured app. Neither app requires sign-in, at least not yet, but the path of least resistance is to sign into your printer and apps with the same account to enable easy communication and syncing. Bambu Studio: A primer Bambu Studio is what's known in the hobby as a "slicer," software that takes existing 3D models output by common CAD programs (Tinkercad, FreeCAD, SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion, others) and converts them into a set of specific movement instructions that the printer can follow. Bambu Studio allows you to do some basic modification of existing models—cloning parts, resizing them, adding supports for overhanging bits that would otherwise droop down, and a few other functions—but it's primarily there for opening files, choosing a few settings, and sending them off to the printer to become tangible objects. Bambu Studio isn't the most approachable application, but if you've made it this far, it shouldn't be totally beyond your comprehension. For first-time setup, you'll choose your model of printer (all Bambu models and a healthy selection of third-party printers are officially supported), leave the filament settings as they are, and sign in if you want to use Bambu's cloud services. These sync printer settings and keep track of the models you save and download from MakerWorld, but a non-cloud LAN mode is available for the Bambu skeptics and privacy-conscious. For any newbie, pretty much all you need to do is connect your printer, open a .3MF or .STL file you've downloaded from MakerWorld or elsewhere, select your filament from the drop-down menu, click "slice plate," and then click "print." Things like the default 0.4 mm nozzle size and Bambu's included Textured PEI Build Plate are generally already factored in, though you may need to double-check these selections when you open a file for the first time. When you slice your build plate for the first time, the app will spit a pile of numbers back at you. There are two important ones for 3D printing neophytes to track. One is the "total filament" figure, which tells you how many grams of filament the printer will use to make your model (filament typically comes in 1 kg spools, and the printer generally won't track usage for you, so if you want to avoid running out in the middle of the job, you may want to keep track of what you're using). The second is the "total time" figure, which tells you how long the entire print will take from the first calibration steps to the end of the job. Selecting your filament and/or temperature presets. Andrew Cunningham For items that are small enough, you can print a few at once using the clone function. For filaments with a gradient, this also makes the gradient effect more pronounced. Andrew Cunningham When selecting filament, people who stick to Bambu's first-party spools will have the easiest time, since optimal settings are already programmed into the app. But I've had almost zero trouble with the "generic" presets and the spools of generic Inland-branded filament I've bought from our local Micro Center, at least when sticking to PLA (polylactic acid, the most common and generally the easiest-to-print of the different kinds of filament you can buy). But we'll dive deeper into plastics in part 2 of this series. I won't pretend I'm skilled enough to do a deep dive on every single setting that Bambu Studio gives you access to, but here are a few of the odds and ends I've found most useful: The "clone" function, accessed by right-clicking an object and clicking "clone." Useful if you'd like to fit several copies of an object on the build plate at once, especially if you're using a filament with a color gradient and you'd like to make the gradient effect more pronounced by spreading it out over a bunch of prints. The "arrange all objects" function, the fourth button from the left under the "prepare" tab. Did you just clone a bunch of objects? Did you delete an individual object from a model because you didn't need to print that part? Bambu Studio will arrange everything on your build plate to optimize the use of space. Layer height, located in the sidebar directly beneath "Process" (which is directly underneath the area where you select your filament. For many functional parts, the standard 0.2 mm layer height is fine. Going with thinner layer heights adds to the printing time but can preserve more detail on prints that have a lot of it and slightly reduce the visible layer lines that give 3D-printed objects their distinct look (for better or worse). Thicker layer heights do the opposite, slightly reducing the amount of time a model takes to print but preserving less detail. Infill percentage and wall loops, located in the Strength tab beneath the "Process" sidebar item. For most everyday prints, you don't need to worry about messing with these settings much; the infill percentage determines the amount of your print's interior that's plastic and the part that's empty space (15 percent is a good happy medium most of the time between maintaining rigidity and overusing plastic). The number of wall loops determines how many layers the printer uses for the outside surface of the print, with more walls using more plastic but also adding a bit of extra strength and rigidity to functional prints that need it (think hooks, hangers, shelves and brackets, and other things that will be asked to bear some weight). Credit: Andrew Cunningham When given the opportunity to use a 3D printer, my mind went first to aggressively practical stuff—prints for organizing the odds and ends that eternally float around my office or desk. When we moved into our current house, only one of the bedrooms had a ceiling fan installed. I put up remote-controlled ceiling fans in all the other bedrooms myself. And all those fans, except one, came with a wall-mounted caddy to hold the remote control. The first thing I decided to print was a wall-mounted holder for that remote control. MakerWorld is just one of several resources for ready-made 3D-printable files, but the ease with which I found a Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan Remote Wall Mount is pretty representative of my experience so far. At this point in the life cycle of home 3D printing, if you can think about it and it's not a terrible idea, you can usually find someone out there who has made something close to what you're looking for. I loaded up my black roll of PLA plastic—generally the cheapest, easiest-to-buy, easiest-to-work-with kind of 3D printer filament, though not always the best for prints that need more structural integrity—into the basic roll-holder that comes with the A1, downloaded that 3MF file, opened it in Bambu Studio, sliced the file, and hit print. It felt like there should have been extra steps in there somewhere. But that's all it took to kick the printer into action. After a few minutes of warmup—by default, the A1 has a thorough pre-print setup process where it checks the levelness of the bed and tests the flow rate of your filament for a few minutes before it begins printing anything—the nozzle started laying plastic down on my build plate, and inside of an hour or so, I had my first 3D-printed object. Print No. 2 was another wall bracket, this time for my gaming PC's gamepad and headset. Credit: Andrew Cunningham It wears off a bit after you successfully execute a print, but I still haven't quite lost the feeling of magic of printing out a fully 3D object that comes off the plate and then just exists in space along with me and all the store-bought objects in my office. The remote holder was, as I'd learn, a fairly simple print made under near-ideal conditions. But it was an easy success to start off with, and that success can help embolden you and draw you in, inviting more printing and more experimentation. And the more you experiment, the more you inevitably learn. This time, I talked about what I learned about basic terminology and the different kinds of plastics most commonly used by home 3D printers.   • How the White House's Interior Design Has DRASTICALLY Changed Over 220 Years

    As the most famous residence in the country, the White House’s interiors are given the utmost attention, and they tend to change with every new administration. So, we’re taking a look back at how the property’s design has evolved over the years. From the famed Sister Parish designs of the Kennedy era to Michael S. Smith’s vision for the Obamas, the house has seen impressive transformations and, more recently, some unexpected style choices. The White House’s OriginsBefore we explore the White House’s most prominent interiors, let’s take a look back at the famed home’s history. The White House was designed by Irish architect James Hoban in the Neoclassical style of architecture and built over the course of eight years. The edifice itself is made of Aquia Creek sandstone that was painted white because of the risk posed by the permeability of the stone, which could crack in colder months. Before the White House was built, the President’s House in Philadelphia served as home to two presidents: George Washington and John Adams. The construction of the White House was completed just a few months before Adams’s presidency ended, so he was able to move into the People’s House before his term concluded.Until 1901, what we know as the White House was actually called the Executive Mansion, which then-President Theodore Roosevelt didn’t find ideal—given that many U.S. states had a governor’s residence that was also called the Executive Mansion. Roosevelt already had a construction crew at work in the White House to make more room for his sizable family. While there are no colorized photos of these rooms under Tiffany’s direction, there are black and white photographs and a colorful oil painting of what the stained glass screen likely looked like—so we can only imagine how magical it appeared in real life. It’s believed that after the screen was removed, it was sold at auction and later installed at Maryland’s Belvedere Hotel, which was destroyed in a fire in 1923. Shortly after the removal of Tiffany’s designs, Theodore Roosevelt hired celebrated architectural firm McKim, Mead & White to restore the White House to its Neoclassical glory. Truman, his family, and the White House staff had to live elsewhere during a three-year-long reconstruction project in which the People’s House was completely gutted, enlarged, and reconstructed. The Trumans spent this time living at Blair House—also known as the President’s Guest House—which is located across the street from the White House.The Kennedy YearsFirst Lady Jacqueline Kennedy was very passionate about historic preservation, and it was her efforts that led to the formation of the White House Historical Association, a nonprofit organization that still exists today, aiming to preserve the White House’s history and make the home more publicly accessible. Following the completion of the project, Jacqueline Kennedy gave a televised tour of the White House, which aired on NBC and CBS to over 80 million viewers on Valentine’s Day of 1962. The broadcast went on to win both an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award.Mrs. Kennedy's renovation focused on reincorporating historic furniture and decor. “It just seemed to me such a shame when we came here to find hardly anything of the past in the house, hardly anything before 1902,” she explained in the broadcast. She cited Colombia’s Presidential Palace as a site where “every piece of furniture in it has some link with the past. I thought the White House should be like that.” Kennedy was so passionate about allowing the public to access the People’s House that, following the suspension of tours after her husband's assassination in 1963, she requested that the tours resume just one week later.The John F. Parish designed the Yellow Oval Room and the Kennedy’s private quarters, but was later replaced by Boudin. Parish’s granddaughter, Susan Bartlett Crater, once told the New York Times that the rift was sparked mainly by “a problem over money.” Regardless, Parish’s influence on the interior design world remains indisputable to this day, and much of the popularity of her style can be traced to this high-profile project.Boudin was soon hired to decorate the Blue Room, the Treaty Room, the Red Room, and the Lincoln Sitting Room. Dorothy Draper protégé Carleton Varney served as Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter's "design consultant," styling state dinners and overseeing Christmas decor. Famed American decorator Mark Hampton also contributed Christmas decorations in 1977. The Ronald Reagan Library Ronald and Nancy Reagan enjoying a meal on silver TV trays in the White House.In the 1980s, the Reagans hired Ted Graber, a decorator from Beverly Hills, to bring their vision to life. In the process, many antique furnishings were replaced with 20th-century decor, straying from typical White House decorating traditions. At the beginning of the next decade, George H.W. Bush tapped Hampton to revive the Oval Office and Executive Residence during his tenure. By the time Bill Clinton moved in, the hand-painted 18th-century-style bird wallpaper that was installed by the Reagans in the master bedroom was still in place. The Clintons’ interior decorator, Kaki Hockersmith, removed and replaced the wallpaper, telling The Washington Post that the room “had lots of all kinds of birds flying and sweeping around. It was not a calming atmosphere.”As First Lady, Hillary Clinton helped raise the White House Endowment Trust’s funds to million, so that more restoration work could be done to White House. During her time spent living at the People’s House, Mrs. Clinton had five rooms restored: the State Dining Room, the East Room, Cross Hall, the Red Room, and the Blue Room. Bush hired Kenneth Blasingame, a fellow Texan, to decorate the White House interiors during his administration. And this wasn’t their first time working together—Blasingame also decorated the Bush family’s ranch house in Crawford, Texas. Then-First Lady Laura Bush told Architectural Digest about her plans for the Oval Office’s redesign, saying, “We knew he wanted it to be a sunny office that showed an optimist worked there.” One of the pieces that she and Blasingame collaborated on was a rug that featured the iconic presidential seal, along with a cheery addition: sun rays above the emblem, which echoed Mrs. Bush’s hopes for a “sunny office.” The rug also includes a depiction of a garland made of laurel leaves, a tie-in to the First Lady’s first name, Laura.Architectural DigestThe Queens’ Bedroom as it appeared during the George W. So, we’re taking a look back at how the property’s design has evolved over the years. From the famed Sister Parish designs of the Kennedy era to Michael S. Smith’s vision for the Obamas, the house has seen impressive transformations and, more recently, some unexpected style choices. The White House’s OriginsBefore we explore the White House’s most prominent interiors, let’s take a look back at the famed home’s history. The White House was designed by Irish architect James Hoban in the Neoclassical style of architecture and built over the course of eight years. The edifice itself is made of Aquia Creek sandstone that was painted white because of the risk posed by the permeability of the stone, which could crack in colder months. He spent a year and a half revamping the place with his team to make it feel comfortable and homey for visitors while preserving the historic interiors, which hadn’t been updated since Mario Buatta and Mark Hampton refreshed the house in the 1980s. “We wanted to continue the story that was already told by Mark and Mario,” Sikes told AD in October 2024. “They’re both idols of mine, so we didn’t want to completely reimagine what they did, but continue the story and update it and make it feel like the best representation of American traditional design there is.”Sikes reupholstered existing furniture, designed custom pieces, and even commissioned a brighter take on the Clarence House damask wallpaper Buatta and Hampton installed in the hallways and staircases.
