    The masses amass in Almàssera for an inspiring four days painting in the Valencian sun.

    Letterheads Per L'Horta in Almàssera, Valencia, 1–4 May 2025.

    This time last month, over 45 guests from 11 countries were feeling the post-Letterheads blues after four days in the small town of Almàssera, just outside Valencia, Spain. Letterheads Per L'Horta was organised by Nico Barrios, and it was a wonderfully intimate experience, with a host of activities to enjoy and learn from.Something that made the event feel extra special was the involvement of people from the local community, who were just as much a part of it as those that had travelled from as far afield as Australia and Mexico to attend. This included bidding in the auction for a souvenir of the long weekend in May spent with friends, new and old.Almàssera and L'HortaAlmàssera is a small town set within a vast expanse of small-scale agricultural production. While each plot of land is known as a huerto, they are collectively referred to as horta, which doesn't really have a direct translation. The Horta Nordthat surrounds Almàssera is the largest and best surviving example of this type of terrain.We were based in the town's Museu de l'Horta, which consists of an old and a modern building with a yard between them that housed the panel jam area.A traditional alqueríain l'horta, a view down on the meet, and the tents protecting the panel jam area.Inside the modern building there was a selection of pieces from Juan Nava's 2022 Gráfica Urbana de Valenciaexhibition. There was also a trip down memory lane for Valencian locals in the form of another exhibition, L'ombra de les lletres, with photos of signs spanning the period 1880–2000.L'ombra de les lletres was originally curated by Tomàs Gorria in 2024. Pedal PowerAlmàssera, and the city of Valencia, are easily navigated by bicycle, which Nico used to facilitate a cycling tour of the old signs of l'horta. In addition to the stories of the individual companies advertised, he was also able to identify the painters responsible for some of the signs.The tour took guests into the heart of l'horta, which, as a largely agricultural area, boasts a surprising number of old and hand-painted signs.Panel JammingAfter a windy first day or so, the event was bathed in beautiful Mediterranean sunshine.     Talks & DemosIn addition to workshops, the museum building also hosted a busy programme of talks. These were delivered by the Asociación de Diseñadores de la Comunidad Valenciana, the errorerror.studio creative typography studio, graphic designer Juan Nava, and type designer Juanjo López.Juan Nava talking about the evolution of his Letras Recuperadasproject, previously featured here at bl.ag online.One of the highlights was hearing from veteran local sign painters Ricardo Moreno and Paco Vivó, both of whom appear in the Tipos Que Importan film that was screened. They were interviewed by Nico and brought a host of goods with them, including their sign kits, photographic portfolios, work samples, books, and other reference materials.Ricardoand Pacowere mobbed after talking about their lives on the brush in Valencia.Following the session, everyone moved outside to watch Paco Vivó paint one of the motifs that he produced many times in his career: the Pepsi-Cola bottle top.Paco Vivó painted his demonstration piece on a canvas which was subsequently sold in the auction.Meanwhile, over in the town square, David Vanderh had set up his screenprinting station to apply Nico's event design in a single colour to any material that the public brought to him.The live screenprinting was in just blue, while the official event t-shirt combined this with a striking orange.Panels on Show and on SaleOn the Sunday, a small exhibition was mounted with the panels that folks could bid on in the auction. Some of these were substantial but Nico took each one in his stride, maintaining a smile throughout.     Events Letterheads Per L'Horta: An Intimate International Meet The masses amass in Almàssera for an inspiring four days painting in the Valencian sun. Better Letters Jun 5, 2025 • 8 min read Letterheads Per L'Horta in Almàssera, Valencia, 1–4 May 2025. This time last month, over 45 guests from 11 countries were feeling the post-Letterheads blues after four days in the small town of Almàssera, just outside Valencia, Spain. Letterheads Per L'Horta was organised by Nico Barrios, and it was a wonderfully intimate experience, with a host of activities to enjoy and learn from.Something that made the event feel extra special was the involvement of people from the local community, who were just as much a part of it as those that had travelled from as far afield as Australia and Mexico to attend. This included bidding in the auction for a souvenir of the long weekend in May spent with friends, new and old.Almàssera and L'HortaAlmàssera is a small town set within a vast expanse of small-scale agricultural production. While each plot of land is known as a huerto, they are collectively referred to as horta, which doesn't really have a direct translation. The Horta Nordthat surrounds Almàssera is the largest and best surviving example of this type of terrain.We were based in the town's Museu de l'Horta, which consists of an old and a modern building with a yard between them that housed the panel jam area.A traditional alqueríain l'horta, a view down on the meet, and the tents protecting the panel jam area.Inside the modern building there was a selection of pieces from Juan Nava's 2022 Gráfica Urbana de Valenciaexhibition. There was also a trip down memory lane for Valencian locals in the form of another exhibition, L'ombra de les lletres, with photos of signs spanning the period 1880–2000.L'ombra de les lletres was originally curated by Tomàs Gorria in 2024. Pedal PowerAlmàssera, and the city of Valencia, are easily navigated by bicycle, which Nico used to facilitate a cycling tour of the old signs of l'horta. In addition to the stories of the individual companies advertised, he was also able to identify the painters responsible for some of the signs.The tour took guests into the heart of l'horta, which, as a largely agricultural area, boasts a surprising number of old and hand-painted signs.Panel JammingAfter a windy first day or so, the event was bathed in beautiful Mediterranean sunshine. These were delivered by the Asociación de Diseñadores de la Comunidad Valenciana, the errorerror.studio creative typography studio, graphic designer Juan Nava, and type designer Juanjo López.Juan Nava talking about the evolution of his Letras Recuperadasproject, previously featured here at bl.ag online.One of the highlights was hearing from veteran local sign painters Ricardo Moreno and Paco Vivó, both of whom appear in the Tipos Que Importan film that was screened. They were interviewed by Nico and brought a host of goods with them, including their sign kits, photographic portfolios, work samples, books, and other reference materials.Ricardoand Pacowere mobbed after talking about their lives on the brush in Valencia.Following the session, everyone moved outside to watch Paco Vivó paint one of the motifs that he produced many times in his career: the Pepsi-Cola bottle top.Paco Vivó painted his demonstration piece on a canvas which was subsequently sold in the auction.Meanwhile, over in the town square, David Vanderh had set up his screenprinting station to apply Nico's event design in a single colour to any material that the public brought to him.The live screenprinting was in just blue, while the official event t-shirt combined this with a striking orange.Panels on Show and on SaleOn the Sunday, a small exhibition was mounted with the panels that folks could bid on in the auction. Exploring its origins and evolution, as well as the major challenges it faces, the development of electric mobility in urban environments represents a global transition that requires a coordinated mix of policies and actions to achieve cleaner and more sustainable transportation systems. Designing safe and comfortable infrastructure for walking and cycling, promoting public transit and shared mobility, and designing more efficient streets that include electric vehicles, among other actions, are part of a growing worldwide effort to reduce carbon emissions.Although electric vehicles were invented before gasoline and diesel cars in the first half of the 19th century, they have undergone significant technological advances over the past 20 years, reducing their costs and their environmental impact, and increasing their utility. Around 1834, Thomas Davenport developed the first battery-powered electric vehicle, building a small train on a circular track and inventing the first direct currentelectric motor. Although there were numerous innovations in the years that followed, battery limitations were a major obstacle. The zinc consumption of a battery was four times more expensive than the coal consumption of a steam engine, so at that time it competed with the electric motor.

The U.S. ranked second, followed by Germany, which leads in Europe with about 1.3 million EVs. Exploring its origins and evolution, as well as the major challenges it faces, the development of electric mobility in urban environments represents a global transition that requires a coordinated mix of policies and actions to achieve cleaner and more sustainable transportation systems. Designing safe and comfortable infrastructure for walking and cycling, promoting public transit and shared mobility, and designing more efficient streets that include electric vehicles, among other actions, are part of a growing worldwide effort to reduce carbon emissions.Although electric vehicles were invented before gasoline and diesel cars in the first half of the 19th century, they have undergone significant technological advances over the past 20 years, reducing their costs and their environmental impact, and increasing their utility. Around 1834, Thomas Davenport developed the first battery-powered electric vehicle, building a small train on a circular track and inventing the first direct current (DC) electric motor. Although there were numerous innovations in the years that followed, battery limitations were a major obstacle. The zinc consumption of a battery was four times more expensive than the coal consumption of a steam engine, so at that time it competed with the electric motor.     While the base game of Monster Hunter Wilds allows you to customize your hunter, Palico, and Seikret, the game’s first Title Update also added customization for Alma. Your handler can now try on some new outfits and even swap between pairs of glasses. A marker will appear on your map, although it might be hard to see if you’re like me and leave your map cluttered. The quickest way there is to travel to the Scarlet Forest Base Camp in Area One and then take a quick Seikret ride north.It won’t take long before you come across a marked Wudwud, who will then point you further down the river. After a quick walk, you’ll find one of his adorable fellows wearing Alma’s glasses upside-down. This new little guy will immediately run off toward the Wudwud hideout. Return there and talk to Thunk again; he’ll tell you that your best option is to ask the others when they’re having festivities. They won’t be holding their festivities until the nighttime during a season of plenty. Taking a Rest to adjust the season and time is the quickest way to set this up.Head up to the top of the hideout when the conditions are met. Talk to all the Wudwuds to receive some items, open up some trade routes, and get information on Ayejack, the one who has the glasses. Their hints will piece together that he’s asleep below. Without a quest marker to assist, this is where things get a little confusing.To find the sleeping Ayejack, you’ll have to jump back down to the main level of the Wudwud hideout. Return there and talk to Thunk again; he’ll tell you that your best option is to ask the others when they’re having festivities. They won’t be holding their festivities until the nighttime during a season of plenty. Taking a Rest to adjust the season and time is the quickest way to set this up.Head up to the top of the hideout when the conditions are met. Talk to all the Wudwuds to receive some items, open up some trade routes, and get information on Ayejack, the one who has the glasses. Their hints will piece together that he’s asleep below. Without a quest marker to assist, this is where things get a little confusing.To find the sleeping Ayejack, you’ll have to jump back down to the main level of the Wudwud hideout. The hanging pouches made up of leaves and vines are what serve as their beds. Ayejack can be found across from the item trading Musharpeye, inside a pouch that’s close to the giant tree. A quest marker will finally pop up once you’ve gotten close to him.Unfortunately, finding and waking him up is only the penultimate part of this quest. He’ll only give up the glasses if you give him some Eastern Honey in return. They’re pretty useful for gathering with fully leveled Geologist and Botanist skills.If it’s anything like previous entries, Monster Hunter Wilds is sure to add plenty of cosmetic DLC. We’ll likely see new outfits for Alma as well, but I probably wouldn’t bet on many more freebies..

Designer Moreno Schweikle decided to give the humble cooler a visual upgrade, taking hints from popular cultural spots and hubs, dipping into Baroque and Neoclassical themes.
    The result? Water coolers that look like legitimate landmarks. Styled to resemble gorgeous fountains seen in city squares. Created as a part of Balenciaga’s ‘Art In Stores’ initiative, these coolers can be found in select Balenciaga outlets scattered across the world. The Art In Stores project sees the fashion brand partnering with a variety of artists like Anna-Sophie Berger, Cayetano Ferrer, Nicole Wermers, Harry Nuriev, and Tobias Spichtig to name a few.

    Morena’s pieces reimagine the water cooler entirely. The cooler’s blockish form gets turned into a Roman pillar with fountains on the side, as well as on top along with a crowning Cupid-esque statuette. The water circulates between these multiple fountains.

    The beauty in Morena’s sculptures lies in the fact that they still utilize color schemes similar to those of a water cooler. Opaque white blocks or sheet metal blocks, with tinted blue transparent elements on top, resembling the same plastic found in water cans that mount vertically onto traditional coolers.

    There’s immense attention to detail, as well as a brilliant balance between industrial and cultural themes. You look at Morena’s Spring Coolers and they look just like coolers, however, they’re different enough to wow you, and enchanting with the way they treat detail and water flow.

Using your slinger to shoot the crystals with Dragon and Thunder pods will cause them to explode and inflict the corresponding elemental damage to Zoh Shia. Considering how often its attacks generate crystals, you can quickly create your own elemental chain reaction and dish out some big hits to the monster. Fortunately, both of these slinger ammo types are easily crafted with the Wyrmsbane and Thundercryst that spawn in the arena.Screenshot: Capcom / Samuel Moreno / KotakuBring gear with high resistance to Fire and Thunder. Blight Resistance is an especially helpful skill if you have pieces of the Guardian Arkveld armor set or the Blight Charm talisman. Trigger them first to destroy the armor quicker!You’ll know the third phase starts when Zoh Shia flies to the front of the arena and lands with a huge tremor. Gigantic crystals will rise out of the ground as it sheds its wing armor. Your experiences against Jin Dahaad might convince you to hide behind one of them, but these won’t offer you protection. The heated creature will set them all on fire, which then spreads out to nearly the whole arena. You can easily avoid this attack by making them prematurely explode with your slinger. Thankfully, you can give yourself an edge by exploiting the following weaknesses:Elemental Weaknesses – DragonWeapon Type Weaknesses – Cut, BluntBreakable Parts – Head, Foreleg x2, Tail (can also be severed), Wings x2Susceptible Status Ailments – Blastblight, Paralysis, Poison, Sleep, Stun (less effective rate)Screenshot: Capcom / Samuel Moreno / KotakuThis hunt has a distinct mechanic that you might recognize from a few spots on the Wyveria map. Some of Zoh Shia’s attacks will create crystals, which it can then charge with Fire or Thunder attacks. They explode soon after, dealing the associated elemental damage to any nearby hunters and possibly causing a chain reaction with nearby crystals.The good news is that you can make them work in your favor. Using your slinger to shoot the crystals with Dragon and Thunder pods will cause them to explode and inflict the corresponding elemental damage to Zoh Shia. Considering how often its attacks generate crystals, you can quickly create your own elemental chain reaction and dish out some big hits to the monster. Fortunately, both of these slinger ammo types are easily crafted with the Wyrmsbane and Thundercryst that spawn in the arena.Screenshot: Capcom / Samuel Moreno / KotakuBring gear with high resistance to Fire and Thunder. Blight Resistance is an especially helpful skill if you have pieces of the Guardian Arkveld armor set or the Blight Charm talisman. Staying underneath this behemoth and near its back legs is one of the safest spots for the entire hunt, although your damage output will be limited. Their evolving set of attacks will eventually start flushing you out from that position as well, so don’t rely on it too often.Zoh Shia cycles through multiple phases as it takes more damage. The monster is completely covered in white crystal armor during its first phase. Your attacks will be more effective if you manage to break the armor, but it will eventually regenerate. Time your dodges well and try mounting if you can. I’ve always been able to open four wounds along its back with plenty of time to spare.The second phase begins with the armor on its head breaking off to reveal a black head that can now use fire attacks. You’ll need to watch out for deceptively quick fireballs and an attack that sets everything underneath it ablaze. From this point on, it can trigger crystals to create some large explosions. Trigger them first to destroy the armor quicker!You’ll know the third phase starts when Zoh Shia flies to the front of the arena and lands with a huge tremor. Gigantic crystals will rise out of the ground as it sheds its wing armor. Your experiences against Jin Dahaad might convince you to hide behind one of them, but these won’t offer you protection. The heated creature will set them all on fire, which then spreads out to nearly the whole arena. You can easily avoid this attack by making them prematurely explode with your slinger. Each destroyed crystal leaves behind an area safe from the fire.Not only are there more burning attacks in the third phase, but fiery pieces of debris will also begin falling. Don’t be surprised if you’re dodging more exploding crystals than triggering them. You might have to contend with a slightly smaller version of the attack that started this phase as well. The best ways to avoid that are to move as far away as possible, or to get right behind the monster.All of this leads to the final phase, with Zoh Shia’s entire black body being revealed. On top of the relentless fire attacks and fiery debris, you’ll also have to deal with a sideways lightning blast and random lightning bolts. Any one of these can set off crystals and potentially ruin the hunt. Do your best to trigger them first and avoid every intended or random attack that comes your way. This is a particularly great time to bring down the two hanging shrine fragment pieces on the sides of the arena. Since this is the last and most dangerous phase, you want to end it as quickly as possible.Tackling this with a coordinated link party of friends will make the hunt far less difficult. I’ve been able to win plenty of times with random hunters, although I’ve typically felt like the only person aware of the crystal mechanic.Screenshot: Capcom / Samuel Moreno / KotakuBeating this tough monster is plenty worth it for the awesome armor and weapons you can make from its parts. I highly recommend leafing through Zoh Shia’s monster information tabs to determine how to best earn any needed parts.
