  • GeoGuessr community maps go dark in protest of EWC ties to human rights abuses

A group of GeoGuessr map creators have pulled their contributions from the game to protest its participation in the Esports World Cup 2025, calling the tournament "a sportswashing tool used by the government of Saudi Arabia to distract from and conceal its horrific human rights record." The protestors say the blackout will hold until the game's publisher, GeoGuessr AB, cancels its planned Last Chance Wildcard tournament at the EWC in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 21 to 27.
GeoGuessr is a browser game where players try to pinpoint locations using only Google Street View images, and it relies on community mapmakers to stay relevant. The blackout, which began on May 21, includes "dozens of creators and their maps, including a supermajority of the most popular competitively relevant world maps," according to a statement the group shared on Reddit. The removed maps have been played tens of millions of times.
One of the largest GeoGuessr communities, Plonk It, has also removed its Map Directory and shared the mapping community's open letter. That statement reads in full as follows:
We, the creators of a considerable share of GeoGuessr’s most popular maps, have decided to make our maps unplayable in protest of GeoGuessr AB’s decision to host a World Championship wildcard tourney at the Esports World Cupin Riyadh.
The EWC is a sportswashing tool used by the government of Saudi Arabia to distract from and conceal its horrific human rights record.
Groups targeted by the government include women, LGBTQ people, apostates and atheists, political dissenters, migrant workers in the Kafala system, religious minorities, and many others. The subjugation of these groups is extensive and pervasive. Members of these groups are routinely subjected to discrimination, imprisonment, torture, and even public executions. These severe human rights violations are well-documented and indisputable.
By participating in the EWC, GeoGuessr is contributing to that sportswashing agenda, which is designed to take attention away from Saudi Arabia's human rights violations.
The GeoGuessr community is diverse and includes many members of groups that would be harshly persecuted were they to live in Saudi Arabia. In solidarity with those currently residing in Saudi Arabia while being subject to oppression, as well as members of the community who would feel and be unsafe attending the tournament in Riyadh, we have decided to black out our maps by replacing all their previous locations with random garbage locations, rendering them unplayable.
This blackout includes dozens of creators and their maps, including a supermajority of the most popular competitively relevant world maps. It will continue until we see action from GeoGuessr; specifically, we demand that GeoGuessr cancels its wildcard event in Saudi Arabia and commits to not hosting any events there as long as it continues its oppressive regime.
You don't play games with human rights.
    Thank you for reading.
    The GeoGuessr mapping community

We've hit up GeoGuessr AB for a comment on the blackout and will update this story as we hear back.
The EWC is a huge, multi-game event owned and operated by the Saudi government and held in the country's capital city. It's an evolution of the Gamers8 tournament and this year marks the second EWC-branded competition; it's due to take place in July and August with a total prize pool of million, split among 24 games. Franchises participating in the 2025 event include Rocket League, Apex Legends, Call of Duty, League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Overwatch, Dota 2, Valorant, Street Fighter 6, EA Sports FC and PUBG.
It's difficult to compete in esports without running into Savvy Games Group, the video game arm of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Alongside hosting the EWC, Savvy has financial stakes in Nexon, Electronic Arts, Embracer Group, Nintendo, Capcomand Take-Two Interactive. Savvy also runs ESL FACEIT Group, which contains the Electronic Sports League, a longstanding and significant esports event company. The New York Times reported last year that the Saudi government plans to invest billion in the video game industry by 2030.
Human rights groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have long documented the abuses of the Saudi government. HRW describes Saudi Arabia's human rights record as "abysmal," and specifically calls out the PIF as a reputational whitewashing tool. Saudi authorities have been accused of sportswashing in traditional sports as well, specifically through the country's ownership of LIV Golf and Newcastle United FC.
In February, Riot Games — the operator of League of Legends, Valorant and Teamfight Tactics, and arguably the largest name in esports — signed a three-year deal with the Esports World Cup Foundation for an undisclosed sum. Riot defended the partnership, arguing that the resulting financial boon for players and the esports industry outweighed other concerns.
"We know some of you may not feel great about our decision to partner with the EWC in this way, and we respect that," Riot's statement read.
Though corporate support for the EWC remains strong, the GeoGuessr mapping community isn't alone in rejecting this year's tournament. Street Fighter 6 player Christopher Hancock, who plays as ChrisCCH for FlyQuest, recently declined his spot at EWC 2025. In a social media statement, Hancock said, "I gave this decision a lot of thought and ultimately decided that, due to the nature in which the event is funded and managed, I do not feel comfortable participating in it." He added that the partnership between the Capcom Pro Tour and the EWC effectively forced him to work with the Saudi-backed group.
"Choosing to not participate in any EWC qualifiers would effectively mean retirement from competing," Hancock said. "I find it regrettable that this event has become so deeply embedded in the, but I have not yet made a decision on whether I will stop competing in events associated to it altogether."
Alongside the GeoGuessr map blackout, the community protest added one new, short challenge to the game called How to Run A Dictatorship. It takes players through five locations around Riyadh, documenting the alleged government-sanctioned torture, kidnapping, imprisonment and oppression of women, LGBTQ people, religious minorities and political dissenters occurring in these places. The challenge takes just a few minutes, so feel free to experience it yourself. This article originally appeared on Engadget at

The First Descendant update 1.2.18 is set to come out on May 22nd, and it is a big update set to introduce lots of new content. Some of this new content already previewed includes a new VIB boss named Icemaden, as well as a new Party Finder system that should greatly improve matchmaking. However, Nexon have now announced another new feature for The First Descendant update 1.2.18, and it’s something that has divided the TFD community.
Nexon announces new feature for The First Descendant update 1.2.18
On the official The First Descendant X account, Nexon has announced another new feature for update 1.2.18. This feature is the ability to “peek into other loadouts”. Basically, you’ll be able to see the modules used by another player, as well as see their dye along with makeup and all other costume cosmetics.
While this sounds like a good idea, there is some division amongst the community. In response to the announcement on X, there are a lot of replies against the peek. There are comments worried that it will ruin build diversity, and there are simply players who would rather keep their build a secret.
On Reddit, one of the concerns fans have is that other players will leave matches due to not being impressed with another player’s build. As per one comment on the TFD subreddit, the “Game’s already full of crybabies who leave if they see a ‘low tier’ desc, so their concerns are legitimate”. There are also people who don’t want their unique build of cosmetics and dyes to be copied by others.
However, in favor of player inspection being added, one comment on X points out that this feature is available in other games and was supposed to be part of TFD at launch.
For those against player inspection, a lot of people are simply arguing that there should be an optional toggle so players can have the choice to hide their builds. This would be the perfect middleground as it would allow player inspection for those who want it, while allowing those who don’t to not have to participate.
Unfortunately, we don’t know right now if there will be a toggle for player inspection. Fortunately, we only have to wait until May 22nd to find out.

Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games here The First Descendant update 1.2.18 is set to come out on May 22nd, and it is a big update set to introduce lots of new content. Some of this new content already previewed includes a new VIB boss named Icemaden, as well as a new Party Finder system that should greatly improve matchmaking. However, Nexon have now announced another new feature for The First Descendant update 1.2.18, and it’s something that has divided the TFD community. Nexon announces new feature for The First Descendant update 1.2.18 On the official The First Descendant X account, Nexon has announced another new feature for update 1.2.18. This feature is the ability to “peek into other loadouts”. Basically, you’ll be able to see the modules used by another player, as well as see their dye along with makeup and all other costume cosmetics. Image credit: @FirstDescendant on X While this sounds like a good idea, there is some division amongst the community. Switch 2 Won’t Support VRR in Docked Mode, Nintendo Confirms
"The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for the error," Nintendo says.

Upon the Nintendo Switch 2’s announcement, its official website briefly claimed that the console would feature support for Variable Refresh Ratein both docked and undocked modes, only for that information to be promptly and quietly removed. Now, Nintendo has offered official clarification on the extent of the feature’s support with the upcoming next-gen console. In a statement to Nintendo Life, Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will support VRR only in handheld mode, which means it won’t be supported in docked mode. The company says the aforementioned information on the website was published in error, as many have guessed since then, and apologized for the error. “Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for the error.” But does that mean VRR for docked mode could be added in as a feature with an update at some point in the future? Nintendo says it has “nothing to announce on this topic”- but it’s not a no, at least. The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch worldwide on June 5, with Mario Kart World releasing as its launch title. Nintendo recently also confirmed free Switch 2 enhancements releasing on the same day for several Switch 1 titles, including several Mario games, Zelda titles, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, among others. Red Dead Redemption 2 is in the Works for Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X/S – Rumour
Rockstar Games' acclaimed open world Wild West epic is headed for current-gen consoles and Nintendo's upcoming new hardware, it's claimed.

Posted By Shubhankar Parijat | On 17th, May. 2025

There was never much hope that a game as technically and graphically intensive as Red Dead Redemption 2 would ever be able to run well enough on the aged hardware of the Nintendo Switch for Rockstar to even consider trying to make that happen, but the upcoming Switch 2 definitely is powerful enough- and sure enough, Rockstar’s title might be headed its way. That’s as per a Gamereactor report, which cites anonymous sources familiar with Rockstar’s plans and claims that Red Dead Redemption 2 is in development for the Nintendo Switch 2. Additionally, the Wild West epic allegedly also has native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in the works. Exactly when these versions will be official announced or when they will release is unknown. The report does vaguely offer details on the supposed enhancements, claiming the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions will tout graphics and performance improvements. A recent leak claimed that Rockstar Games has also had a current-gen version of Grand Theft Auto 4 in the works, along with plans of a Max Payne 3 remaster to go along with Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake, which is in development at Remedy Entertainment. Meanwhile, Grand Theft Auto 6 is, of course, due out on May 26 next year for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Tagged With:

  • The First Berserker: Khazan Missed Internal Sales Targets But Nexon Doesn’t Mind

Publisher Nexon has revealed that its recently-released action RPG, The First Berserker: Khazan, missed internal sales forecasts. During its recent earnings call, the company said that Q1 revenue for the game was under what the company was expecting of it. However, Nexon isn’t too disappointed with this, since the game did manage to get a fair bit of commercial success, and ultimately, helped in bringing more attention to the Dungeon & Fighter IP.
“The game made its global debut on March 28 with strong ratings from both players and critics,” said the company in its earnings call. “While Q1 revenue was below our outlook, the game achieved our objective as a strategic first step in a multi-year plan to introduce Dungeon & Fighter IP to a global audience.”
The Dungeon & Fighter franchise is around a decade old at this point. However, it has only really been known in east-Asian markets, thanks to MMO beat ‘em up game Dungeon Fighter Online. Nexon has previously tried to bring more global attention to the franchise with the release of games like DNF Duel, but had failed to spark interest in the IP until the release of The First Berserker: Khazan.
Dungeon Fighter Online revolves around players taking on the role of characters dubbed Dungeon Fighters as they take part in various adventures across the world of Arad. The core gameplay revolves around fast-paced actions and dungeon crawling, where players can take on dangerous enemies and progress their character through level ups as well as by finding new equipment.
The First Berserker: Khazan takes place in the same setting, and expands on one of the key time periods of the backstory. The action RPG revolves around the eponymous Khazan, who is saved from the brink of death by the Blade Phantom. A deal is struck between them, and they set off to investigate a mysterious force that is causing disruptions in the flow of souls from the northern parts of Arad.
Developer Neople has continued to support The First Berserker: Khazan through post-launch update since its release. The most recent one, out earlier this week, brought with it two Boss Rush modes. Described as modes that offer the “Ultimate Challenge”, players can take part in what is essentially meant to be post-game content once they have finished the main story. The two Boss Rush modes are dubbed the Great General’s Crucible and Berserker’s Bloodshed.
The First Berserker: Khazan is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For more details about the action RPG, check out our review. And in case you’re stuck on some parts, check out our guides for all bosses and their locations, some of the most powerful gear sets, and how you can level mastery and earn skill points quickly.
While The First Berserker: Khazan has been a critical and commercial success, Nexon also has another game in the Dungeon & Fighter world in the works. Dubbed Dungeon and Fighter: ARAD, the game is currently in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. It doesn’t yet have a release date, however.

The First Berserker: Khazan Missed Internal Sales Targets But Nexon Doesn’t Mind
“While Q1 revenue was below our outlook, the game achieved our objective as a strategic first step in a multi-year plan to introduce Dungeon & Fighter IP to a global audience.” The Dungeon & Fighter franchise is around a decade old at this point. Maple Story publisher Nexon has released its Q1 2025-26 fiscal year earnings report, posting modest boosts in revenue and operating income.
Nexon's three biggest franchises - Dungeon&Fighter, Maple Story, and FC - delivered an "aggregate 21% year-over-year growth", up from 8% in Q4 2024.
    The Numbers:
    For the first quarter 2025

Revenue: ¥113.9 billionOperating income: ¥41.6 billionNet income: ¥26.3 billionThe Highlights:
Nexon's Dungeon&Fighter franchise delivered 60% year-over-year growth in Q1, driven by "contributions from Dungeon&Fighter Mobile in China and the global release of The First Berserker: Khazan." In Q2, Nexon expects franchise revenue to decline by approximately 40% "due to a difficult comparison with the explosive launch of Dungeon&Fighter Mobile one year ago, which increased franchise revenue by 162%."
While FC Online's Q1 revenue exceeded expectations, FC Mobile fell short, pushing the franchise into a year-over-year decline, if coming in within the expected range. However, Nexon expects player "excitement" to increase as we edge closer to the 2026 World Cup.
Maple Story, however, grew revenues of 8% YoY, "primarily driven by the strong performance of MapleStory in Korea and the West," with December's large winter update driving "strong improvements to player engagement, resulting in a 43% year-over-year increase in Q1 revenue, which exceeded outlook."
Shooter The First Descendant Q1 revenue "fell below" expectations due to "lower-than-anticipated sales from a new episode of Season 2, but player metrics improved," whilst The Finals Q1 came in at the higher end of predicted performance "supported by the Season 6 update in March, which generated improvements to key player metrics." Additional momentum is expected from new content planned for May.
A large, global tech test for ARC Raiders conducted earlier this month "significantly exceeded expectations for key metrics", including wishlisting on Steam.
    Looking ahead
Nexon expects revenue across Q2 2025 to be in the range of ¥99.6 billion to ¥110.3 billion, down 10 to 19% year-over-year.
Operating income and expected net income are also expected to fall by 50%-31% and 58%-42%, respectively, to in the range of ¥22.5 billion to ¥31.1 billion and ¥16.8 billion to ¥23.3 billion.
However, Nexon expects Maple Story to grow approximately 20% year over year next quarter.
“Nexon is delivering on its promises to our players and our investors,” said Junghun Lee, president and CEO of Nexon. “In the past three months we saw a recovery in our key titles, Dungeon&Fighter and Maple Story, and launched two new games: The First Berserker: Khazan and Mabinogi Mobile. And we are making solid progress in our partnership initiatives with Tencent, including the release of new co-developed content for Dungeon&Fighter Mobile later this year and pre-registrations on The Finals and The First Berserker: Khazan in China.
"And in another breakthrough in our global expansion strategy, Embark Studios recently completed a large test on a new game, ARC Raiders, which exceeded our expectations for YouTube and Twitch views, and beat our wishlist goal on Steam by 50%. The Embark team is now working to integrate player feedback and polish the game ahead of the launch.
“Despite global economic turmoil, Nexon is deeply resilient and positioned for sustained growth," he added. "Our company is anchored by recurring revenue from multiple established franchises, a clearly defined growth plan, a robust pipeline of new games, strategic partnership for capturing growth opportunities in large markets, world-class live operations, and a balance sheet with approximately ¥600 billion in cash which can be used to capture new opportunities and enhance shareholder returns.”
