The Liverpool-based practice’s 232m2 Vestige project in Wilmslow was one of four schemes, chosen from a seven-strong shortlist, to pick up regional awards. It also took bagged the RIBA North West’s Small Project of the Year. The jury praised the Smith Young house, which recycled masonry from an existing Edwardian house on the plot to create load-bearing elements of the new structure, for its ‘subtle interplays of solid and void, of rendered ground floor and timber box above’ and its ‘clever details’. The other award winners were: OMA’s much-delayed and over-budget Aviva Studios in Manchester;  Cullinan Studio and 10architect’s The Catkin Centre and Sunflower House, a mental health centre for children in Liverpool; and Sheppard Robson’s new School of Science, Engineering and Environment for the University of Salford. It hasn’t been that long since Apple had no status at all in enterprise IT. Its products were used in some creative departments and at home, but that’s as far as things went. The iPod and iPhone changed all that, even while general exposure to powerful mobile tech transformed perceptions around what to expect from the tools you use at work. The Apple user experience is the company’s biggest not-so-secret weapon, and it is interesting that even decades since the first PCs appeared, Apple still delivers intuitive user experiences  people enjoy using. Consumer simple, enterprise ready Those user experiences have generated expectations, and as my old chum Dean Hager, former Jamf CEO liked to describe it, people entering the workplace wanted the systems they used there to be as easy and intuitive to understand as the Apple products they used elsewhere. Apple’s user experience eventually became something incoming enterprise employees expected — many would simply quit their job if they were using crummier tech at work than they were at home. At the end of the day, Apple won the enterprise one consumer user at a time. But the other piece to Apple’s success is that organizations that have deployed Apple products at scale have experienced significant improvements on their bottom line. Multiple reports tell us employees are happier using Apple products, they’re more productive using Apple products, and spend less on tech support on Apple products than on PCs. Staff retention rates improve even as productivity grows — and the reduced tech support costs make life easier for IT and dramatically reduce the Total Cost of Ownership of an Apple fleet.  How Apple wins for enterprise IT None of this came easy. Apple had to take its basic product (the Mac) and its OS X operating system and figure out how to best apply that tech to mobile devices. That’s what we began to get with the iPod and saw in living Technicolor with the iPhone; Apple took the power of computing and placed it inside the device you always have with you – your phone. Of course, the ability to run more complex applications on your iPhone made it possible for employees to get more work done using the device, which spawned the Bring Your Own Device wave that really began to express itself around 2010. Not only did employees want to be able to use the same platform at work as at home, but they also wanted to use the same mobile devices at work as at home. The biggest evidence of that was the abject failure of Windows Mobile as it showed people didn’t want to use the same PC they used at work in their mobile existences; they remained hooked on experience Apple’s ease-of-use.  They did then.  They do now. The evidence is everywhere You can see this is the direction of travel each time you read yet another report explaining Apple’s growing enterprise sales across all of its products, or the fast-proliferating number of Very Large Indeed Apple deployments at giant global companies. Not to mention that once employee choice schemes are put in place, the majority of employees seem to prefer Apple to any other platform. While it’s still early days on spatial computing, we can already see Vision Pro devices staking spaces across key industries as Apple takes what was once more or less the Mac experience and makes it both ambient and hyper-mobile. Spatial computing isn’t just about computing that surrounds you, it’s about computing that takes you there. Along this journey, Apple has thought deeply about what it offers and attempted to take down barriers to enterprise deployment. That’s why the company provides APIs for Mobile Device Management; that’s why it has high-grade security features I’m certain the company’s own CEO also uses, such as Lockdown Mode; that’s also why it remains so deeply committed to delivering regular software and hardware updates, so no enterprise professionals find themselves left insecure or abandoned on their workplace tech journey.  Want to do more? You can, thanks to the company’s’ rich set of developer tools, which provide a robust environment for enterprise development and integration.  Support and updates The fact that Apple’s hardware is reliable is also good for enterprise sales. Coupled with annual software updates that bring sometimes-exciting new features, user engagement remains high throughout the usable life of these devices, which now usually extends to an easy five years. Once that time is up, the resilience and reliability of the devices means they still fetch good value in the second-user markets; most major purchasers might also draw reassurance that the recycling and salvaging of the products will have some impact on their own carbon targets.  Enterprises also like reliability for another reason, it helps them plan ahead.  Not only do they know that it is unlikely Apple will make too many major changes (though we do experience smaller ones), but they also know that unlike Windows 11, you will not wake one morning to find your PC has been updated to a new operating system without consent. These little communications do count, particularly if you are running several hundred systems in your fleet. You also cannot ignore the impact of the CrowdStrike debacle on that lovely feeling of peace and calm enterprises perhaps enjoyed before it took place. Apple’s platform security may not be something we can take for granted any longer, but it still exists — and while it makes sense to stay watchful, it remains unmatched. Its major software updates remain free (at least until regulators utterly wreck the company’s business). That’s always an easy budget line item at the end of the day.  What Apple gets wrong It is interesting, given all that it gets right, the extent to which critics like to focus on what Apple gets wrong. Some of the most common criticisms could translate into easy wins for Apple: Yes, I think it should provide more in-depth granular information to assist enterprise IT deployments, but I would also argue that its free certification courses remain the best possible way to find the answers you need to begin managing larger or newer Apple deployments. Those courses are free, well-constructed and give you a thorough grounding for this work. Though I would really like Apple to give Configurator the power to register multiple devices at once – and a little more automation would come in useful to a lot of admins, particularly in the education sector.  But what’s super-interesting about so many of the criticisms made around Apple in the enterprise is that they tend toward being smaller, more granular problems that the company could conceivably resolve once it stops pouring all of its R&D resources into AI development.  And that’s my point, really — to quietly point out that the nature of the criticisms Apple’s current enterprise solutions receive actually reflect how successfully it has penetrated the sector. It is now being asked to solve really complex questions that reflect the myriad complexities of enterprise IT requirements. It won’t solve all of them overnight, but its progress in the sector since earlier this century suggests it will probably get around to resolving many of them, one challenge at a time. And, rest assured, while Apple never speaks about it, I’m confident that the company does actually read criticism; it just needs to be selective concerning which challenges to solve first. And at times it must also consider whether those challenges will still be relevant a few years as tech deployment requirements change. Documents reveal team tested options including building over station’s entire listed trainshed New image of Acme's proposals for the station's main entrance 1/22 show caption The City of London has published the planning application for Network Rail’s proposed redevelopment of Liverpool Station, revealing new images of how the scheme could look when built. The £1bn Acme designed scheme was submitted at the beginning of April and has been validated by Square Mile planners in the space of just six weeks.  A highly controversial previous version designed by Herzog & de Meuron for Network Rail and its former development partner Sellar, which has since been dropped, took more than six months to appear on the City’s planning portal. More than 20 previously unseen images of the new proposals, set to be one of the largest schemes in London, have been unveiled along with new details about how the scheme would be built. Acme’s plans would see a 21-storey office block built above the 1980s extension to the grade II-listed station’s train shed and a set of new vaulted gothic entrances built to replace the building’s existing gateways. These entrances would be faced predominately with yellow stock bricks, the same type used for the original 1875 station building and its 20th century extension, with bricks from parts of the extension set to be demolished to be reused in the new entrances. Acme has also proposed incorporating amber-tinted glass bricks, which will be “speckled” in the upper parts of the 18m-high entrance vaults and concentrated at the top of the concave areas of the arches between the ribs. Network Rail said the glass bricks will “serve as one of the contemporary subversions of an otherwise historic typology”, adding a “crystalline light scatter of the material [to] mark the stations thresholds as spaces of architectural interest”. The application documents also reveal Network Rail had considered building over the entire listed train shed roof prior to opting for a limited development over the 1980s concourse area. Options tested included a single block facing Exchange Square at the northern end of the train shed, three blocks spaced over the length of the train shed, elongated blocks running along either side and a large block containing multiple light wells which would sprawled over the full extent of the station. Options for the over-station development tested by Network Rail prior to the selection of the current proposal for a building above the concourse A further option to build a tower scheme over the existing Metropolitan Arcade opposite the main station building on Liverpool Street was also considered but was ruled out due to ownership issues and below ground constraints of the Circle and Elizabeth Lines. Network Rail initially favoured an over station development facing Exchange Square but concluded this was scrapped because of its impact on train services, its engineering complexity and difficulty in creating viable entrances. The preferred development above the concourse was identified as the most viable, although it will not include building above the grade II*-listed former Great Eastern Hotel which had been one of the most controversial aspects of Herzog & de Meuron’s proposals for the site. The plans confirm Network Rail’s pledge last year to take a more “heritage-led” approach to the redevelopment compared to the previous scheme, which had proposed interventions in a strikingly different design to the 19th century station. That scheme was abandoned last year with Network Rail’s development partner Sellar dropped after the application amassed more than 2,000 objections from members of the public and criticism from heritage groups including Historic England. A selection of Acme’s early design concepts for the station entrances Network Rail’s property arm, Network Rail Property, is now leading the redevelopment and has sought closer collaboration with heritage groups on the design, although the Victorian Society, which led the campaign against the previous proposals, is still objecting to the new designs and has described the planned over-station office tower as “perverse”. The office component is being used to fund improvements to the rest of the station, which is currently the UK’s busiest with around 118 million people a year crossing its concourse with annual passenger numbers expected to hit 158 million by 2041. Network Rail said the redevelopment, which will significantly enlarge the building’s concourse, will enable the station to serve more than 200 million passengers a year. It also aims to turn the station into a “destination in its own right” with new retail, leisure and workspace, aligning with the City of London’s Destination City ambition to diversify its economy. The project team includes Aecom on engineering and transport, Certo as project manager, Newmark, previously known as Gerald Eve, on planning, Gleeds as cost manager, Donald Insall Associates on heritage and townscape, GIA on daylight and sunlight and SLA as landscape architect.

Hackers have been stealing Coinbase customer information by bribing the company’s overseas support agents for access. The scheme affects a "small subset of customers," the popular cryptocurrency platform said on Thursday. "Their aim was to gather a customer list they could contact while pretending to be Coinbase—tricking people into handing over their crypto,” the company wrote in a blog post. Fortunately, the hackers had no access to user passwords, two-factor authentication codes, or the private keys for any cryptocurrency accounts. Still, in some cases, the cybercriminals successfully phished affected customers using stolen data, which included names, addresses, phones, email addresses, the last four digits of Social Security numbers, “masked bank account numbers,” government ID images such as driver’s license, along with balance snapshots and transaction histories. Unsuspecting victims then sent their cryptocurrency to the scammers, believing them to be official Coinbase representatives. In addition, the hackers even tried to extort Coinbase itself, demanding a $20 million payment from the cryptocurrency company to cover up the incident. However, Coinbase refused to pay and instead disclosed the hacking activity to warn users.    The scheme risks endangering customers who regularly use Coinbase for cryptocurrency transactions. “Less than 1% of our monthly transacting users had their records accessed,” CEO Brian Armstrong said in a video, without mentioning a firm number. Recommended by Our EditorsIn some good news, Coinbase plans on reimbursing users who fell for the phishing attempts. The company is also bolstering its security around customer support to prevent a repeat. “We’re actually relocating some of our customer support operations as a result of this,” Armstrong added. Coinbase is also offering a $20 million reward for any information that leads to the arrest of the culprits. “For these would-be extortionists, or anyone seeking to harm Coinbase customers, know that we will prosecute you and bring you to justice,” Armstrong said.Still, the hackers could use the stolen data to commit identity theft and other malicious schemes against the impacted users. Hence, victims should take measures to protect themselves. Coinbase says it already sent alert notices to affected customers, though details on the reimbursement process are scant. For now, the blog post merely says: “Coinbase will voluntarily reimburse retail customers who mistakenly sent funds to the scammer as a direct result of this incident prior to the date of this post, following a review to confirm the facts.”In the meantime, the company says it's working with law enforcement to ID the scammers.

Source: Bureau de Change Architects / HGGThe proposed scheme A proposal by Bureau de Change Architects to redevelop a single-family home in Dartmouth Park, Camden, into a five-storey block of flats has drawn national attention, including opposition from Dame Justine Thornton, a barrister and judge, who is also wife of energy secretary Ed Miliband. The project, submitted for developer HGG London, would see the demolition of a 1930s detached house on Dartmouth Park Road, located in the Highgate ward of the London borough, and its replacement with six apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms. The proposal seeks to increase the site’s density while referencing local Victorian architecture in its massing and façade design. In its design and access statement, Bureau de Change describes the proposal as a “sensitive and site-driven design” that aims to deliver “much needed new housing for the area”. The site sits within the Dartmouth Park Conservation Area. Thornton wrote that the proposed block was “too tall, too bulky and too dense for its plot given the context of the surrounding houses and the wider conservation area”. While expressing support for additional housing in principle, she cited the nearby Highgate Newtown residential development as “a brilliant example of thoughtful design in harmony with neighbouring properties” and suggested that the application represented “another opportunity for the Council to demonstrate its commitment to the provision of sympathetically designed housing by acknowledging the benefit of redevelopment whilst rejecting this particular design”. The project has highlighted the ongoing tension between national planning policy objectives and local resistance to change. The Labour government has made housing delivery a key part of its growth agenda, pledging to prioritise brownfield development and to take a more assertive stance against anti-development sentiment. Architects Joanna van Heyningen and Birkin Haward, founding partners of van Heyningen and Haward Architects, also submitted a formal objection to the scheme. In their response, they stated that the proposal was “too tall for its context, too deep, too close to the houses to its south and east, provides poor living standards for its intended inhabitants, and ignores the requirement for bio-diversity net gain”. Referring to the design, they described the illustrated façade as “a naïve architectural response that attempts to be contextual by aping some of the proportions of neighbouring buildings, whilst completely failing to respect them”. They argued that the scheme would be “out of keeping with the architectural style of the area” and warned it would “disrupt the aesthetic of the street” and be “directly in opposition to the nature of a conservation area”. They also expressed concerns about the impact on privacy and daylight, writing that the proposed building “will dwarf houses on both roads” and “look directly onto adjacent properties and gardens”. The objection concluded by cautioning that approval could “set a precedent for the area”, asking: “Could I now demolish my property and replace it with flats and not require the same extensive planning approval?” Camden Council is yet to decide on the application. Naturally, Google hasn't revealed the upcoming operating system's full scope of updates and improvements, but it gave the world a glimpse via an Android Show: I/O Edition stream. The most eye-catching addition is Android 16's Material You interface overhaul, Material 3 Expressive, which will bring more customization options to Android phones than any Google OS before it. Here are the five features I'm itching to try when Android 16 releases in June.(Credit: Google)1. Smoother AnimationsThe first thing I noticed during the Android 16 reveal was the smooth, bouncy animations across the user interface. The UI elements tangibly interact with one another, so swiping a pill notification makes adjacent pills subtly react, too. These little interactions permeate the entire OS, popping up when you adjust the volume slider, dismiss apps, or perform other actions. They're satisfying to see in action, and they add a level of polish I haven't seen in previous Android versions, including the excellent Android 15. Oxygen OS on OnePlus smartphones is renowned for its superbly slick and smooth animations compared with the base Android OS (which OxygenOS is based on). Google appears to have taken inspiration from it by making eye-catching animation a core aspect of the Android 16 experience, and I'm very excited to get my hands on it.(Credit: Google)2. Expanded Color PaletteAndroid's color suggestions offer excellent customization options that let you mix and match elements on the Home and Lock screens. These suggestions are generally quite good, but their color schemes are notably muted. Material 3 Expressive eases off the desaturation by giving you a much more vibrant palette for personalizing the UI. However, Google is also updating the system to ensure a clearer distinction between primary, secondary, and tertiary tones, so a dark surface is paired with appropriately light text label colors, for example. This means you'll have more creative freedom to customize colors when Android 16 hits compatible phones later this year. (Credit: Google)3. Live UpdatesAndroid 16's Live Updates will make it easier to track real-time progress from apps like Google Maps or Uber Eats. It places an app's status alert in an easy-to-access pill at the top, similar in style to the Dynamic Island notification feature on iPhone 15 and newer Apple headsets. You can also pin Quick Settings and other controls to it for swifter access. Lastly, Notifications now feature a cool, subtle background blur effect that gives your phone's screen more depth, making it easier to navigate. Recommended by Our Editors(Credit: Google)4. Enhanced TypographyThis may sound initially underwhelming, but Material 3 Expressive is overhauling Android's typography by introducing new type styles to make the OS more legible and attractive. These updates are available to developers to utilize, which means you should see Android apps leveraging the visual options soon after Android 16 arrives. Awesome, Evolving VisualsAs mentioned earlier, Material 3 Expressive introduces new animations that make the Android 16 experience far more polished than any OS update preceding it. A major factor in this is the motion physics system. The lively, energetic interactions are all heavily influenced by a spring system, which attributes values to motion behavior. They directly control damping, initial velocity, and stiffness, and can be used in a variety of situations, such as button effects, gestures, and transitions. This system creates a unified foundation for Android 16's visual components, but also gives developers the tools to customize apps and icons in a much more dynamic fashion. This means that these visual touches will only get better as Material 3 Expressive matures and developers adapt to the new tools. It's a promising new future for Android, at least visually. Look for Android 16's Release in JuneAndroid has stronger UI customization features than iOS, thanks to its Material You design language. Instead of a singular, standardized design, it gives you the tools to customize colors and visual elements on your Android device. These are just a few little details that caught my eye, but these changes add up to a big Android visual shift. Material 3 Expressive should roll out on Pixel devices later this year, following the stable Android 16 release in June.

May 14, 2025Ravie LakshmananCybercrime / Cryptocurrency A Chinese-language, Telegram-based marketplace called Xinbi Guarantee has facilitated no less than $8.4 billion in transactions since 2022, making it the second major black market to be exposed after HuiOne Guarantee. According to a report published by blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, merchants on the marketplace have been found to peddle technology, personal data, and money laundering services. "The USDT stablecoin is the primary payment method, with the market having received $8.4 billion in transactions to date," the company said. "Some transactions can be linked to funds stolen by North Korea." Xinbi, like HuiOne, has offered its services to scammers in Southeast Asia, including those responsible for so-called romance baiting schemes (formerly referred to as "pig butchering"), which has become one of the most lucrative forms of cybercrime in recent years. What's notable about these criminal bazaars is that they are entirely run on Telegram, becoming a one-stop shop to avail a wide range of services, ranging from technical tools to money laundering services to pull off online fraud at an industrial scale. Xinbi Guarantee, per Elliptic, has 233,000 users, with merchants broken down to broad categories related to money laundering, Starlink satellite internet equipment, fake IDs, and databases of stolen personal information used to target potential victims. Other vendors go a step further by offering to stalk and intimidate any chosen target within China, provide women to act as egg donors or surrogates, or even engage in sex trafficking, indicating that the illicit services go beyond cyber scams. "The marketplace is seeing strong growth - with Q4 2024 the first quarter to see inflows of more than $1 billion," Elliptic said. "Transaction volumes on Chinese-language Guarantee marketplaces such as Huione and Xinbi Guarantee dwarf those of the first generation of Tor-based darknet marketplaces." But perhaps the most interesting aspect of Xinbi is that it claims to be an "investment and capital-guarantee group company" registered in the U.S. state of Colorado by someone named Mohd Shahrulnizam Bin Abd Manap. According to the state corporate register, the company was incorporated in August 2022. It has since been marked as "Delinquent" for failing to file its periodic reports. Both Xinbi and HuiOne Guarantee have also been used to launder cryptocurrency assets stolen by North Korea following the hack of the Indian cryptocurrency exchange WazirX last July, with $220,000 in USDT sent to the wallet addresses controlled by the former on November 12, 2024. In response to the findings, Elliptic said Telegram has shut down thousands of channels belonging to the two services, effectively disrupting the two largest marketplaces that have engaged in over $35 billion in USDT transactions. The development comes weeks after the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) designated Cambodia-based HuiOne Group as a "primary money laundering concern" in a bid to limit its access to the U.S. financial system. "These platforms also provide a window onto a China-based underground banking system, based around stablecoins and other digital payments, which is being leveraged for money laundering on a significant scale," Elliptic said.
