Set within a leafy enclave of the Hampstead Conservation Area in North London, a modernist townhouse now stands confidently refurbished for a young couple and their daughter, expertly designed by emerging architecture and interiors practice, Studio Hagen Hall. The home is part of a handsome cluster of nine properties, including five townhouses originally designed by South African architect Ted Levy, Benjamin & Partners in the late 1960s, representing a key part of progressive post-war design thinking in London's built history. Externally, each of the neighboring homes appears uniformly designed with subtle reference to Cape Town coastal developments in the 50s and 60s, but interiors have since been sporadically renovated, and the majority of them stripped of their modernist character. 'Pine Heath' is one of the last remaining houses to retain many original features still intact throughout.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Drawn to the original, mid-century charm and interiors of the home, the clients briefed Studio Hagen Hall to revive the tired terraced house into a warm, broken plan, polished home for their growing family, with a keen focus on upgrading its overall energy efficiency and performance. As long-time followers of the practice and admirers of previous completed projects, including Canyon House, the clients appointed Studio Hagen Hall in 2021 for its approachability, extensive experience in modernist restorations, and ability to deliver technically challenging architecture with warm, sensitive, and timelessly crafted interiors. Studio Hagen Hall was initially appointed to lightly refurbish the home, involving only the kitchen, bathrooms, and windows, but on careful inspection, realized that the home's true potential lay in much wider renovation. Studio Hagen Hall proposed a bespoke restoration encompassing the whole house that would improve operational efficiency and reduce overall project costs in the long term, and ultimately introduce a more sophisticated and pragmatic series of living spaces to suit a functional, life-long home.Save this picture!Alongside the aesthetic and energy-improvement brief for Pine Heath, spatial planning needed much consideration throughout the property. The new arrangement lays out a defined relationship between indoor and outdoor zones. A more logical connection is re-established between the entrance, kitchen, and living areas, and large amounts of storage and multi-purpose functionality are introduced into these communal spaces. Previously a three-bedroom home, Studio Hagen Hall has utilized the property's five stories to deliver a cleverly and subtly zoned floor plan, balancing social family space with distinct areas for rest, utility, work, and play. It now comprises an additional fourth guest bedroom suite-cum-gym in the basement, plus a new office and guest sleeping pod in the eaves of the property. The original central stairwell and timber-clad ceilings acted as a cue to reinstating the modernist characteristics of Pine Heath. The aged Paraná pine, a highly sought-after endangered species, formed the foundation for the project's material palette and further references Studio Hagen Hall's sensitive design choices to work around and preserve original, indelible detail throughout the home.Save this picture!Save this picture!Other intentional devices are employed by Studio Hagen Hall to improve sightlines and accentuate spatial flow between each room. In the bedrooms, old doors and openings have been replaced with floor-to-ceiling pocket doors maintained at 2.5 meters high, and subtly re-aligned to allow perfect views all the way from the front to the back of the house. Storage spaces in the bedrooms, once running laterally, now run perpendicular so that windows and views are completely unfettered and viewed through deep timber-lined portals. On entry, visitors are greeted by a generous hallway and a built-in cloak area complete with a bench, with direct vistas reaching the terraced patio and communal gardens to the rear of the home. Navigating this visual journey, occupants are carried along acute horizontal datum lines, and a tile grid that continues throughout the whole house; window sills, joinery, and spaces with angular changes cut at 45-degree angles, highlight Studio Hagen Hall's meticulous and exceedingly satisfying approach to spatial design.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!The new bespoke kitchen nods to the client and Studio Hagen Hall's shared interest in quality craftsmanship, showcased in dynamic, yet sensitive, material detailing. Brushed stainless steel worktops sit deftly atop the bespoke cabinetry, individually fitted to mask all domestic appliances such as the fridge, dishwasher, and bespoke extractor fan hood. Custom-designed and milled sapele handles mirror existing mahogany accents throughout the house. Period details of the original modernist kitchen have been accentuated for contemporary use; textured, stippolyte glass cabinetry together with a sweeping curved timber fascia now envelopes the kitchen, aligning with the original horizontal window datum and framing the serving hatch to the dining area. Custom mechanical louvre window shutters are installed above the sink, providing privacy from the street when required. A warm yet refined palette forms the basis for the interior mood of Pine Heath. The joinery has been expertly crafted in a complementary veneer, subtly stained to match the original Paraná pine strip ceiling and stair cladding within the home. Studio Hagen Hall added textures and colors to elevate the atmosphere, with rich greens tying the house together, displayed in the raised living area, stairwell, and covering all of the bespoke upholstered furnishings in the living, dining, and sleeping spaces.Save this picture!Save this picture!Earthen colors come together to create dramatic interior focal points, in the color-drenched tiled bathrooms punctuated by browns, greens, and blues, selectively chosen to complement the cherry wood joinery, seamless mirror glazing, and bespoke barisol lighting. Microcement flooring flows through the upper floors, deepening the relationship between materiality and ambience. In numerical terms, Pine Heath now reads at a much higher thermal performance. Studio Hagen Hall retained the appearance of the original fenestration by replacing the original single-glazed aluminum windows with a custom hybrid solution, comprising timber frames with aluminum and vacuum glazing inserts.Save this picture!Beyond the upgrade to the glazing, insulation was added internally to key areas of the concrete and brick structure to drastically reduce cold-bridging. Trickle and adjustable air vents in each room provide fresh airflow via the new centralized mechanical extract ventilation system. This allowed us to gain square meters for a multi-purpose space at a lower cost by increasing the height of only one-half of the house to accommodate a mezzanine. On the ground floor, the kitchen, living, and dining areas are grouped along an open space with windows on three sides. Wooden surfaces under the entrance canopy and interior create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The psychiatric hospital is located west of the central hospital building. Straw Stack Space is located in Houhu Art Park in Changsha, Hunan Province, which is a special 'village in the middle of the city' in Changsha that grew up spontaneously, located at the foot of Yuelu Mountain, and in the centre of the university town. Since the 1950s, the Houhu Art Park has become a unique cultural landmark in Changsha through its history of fisheries, art training and art exhibitions. And, Straw Stack Space is a small community cultural complex in Houhu Lake, integrates exhibitions, art salons, music performances and cultural and creative exchanges.Save this picture!Using pure 'Euclidean Geometry' ---square and circle as the basic graphic language, Straw Stack Space tries to revive the poetic atmosphere of Houhu's past as a field and countryside through the abstraction and metaphor of 'wheat (rice) haystacks', round barns, sunbathing yards and other memorable scenes in the rural landscape. The building occupies two residential sites, and we combined one house with six 'cylinders' in juxtaposition, while the other house has one 'cylinder' implanted in a pure 'square'. Woodbury Residence drew inspiration from decalcomania—the art technique of creating mirrored patterns through folded paint. We applied this concept architecturally, not as literal replication but as thoughtful dialogue between old and new. The project's core concept emerged from our octogenarian client Kathryn's pioneering spirit. Rather than aging amongst accumulated memories, she embraced change through architectural transformation. Creating a continuous thermal envelope while maintaining the character of the Edwardian property required meticulous planning. The Boulder Public Library issued an open Request for Proposal (RFP) in 2018 for a new branch library in North Boulder, a project the community had anticipated for over two decades. The RFP called for an "iconic" building, which many competitors interpreted as a visually striking design. However, WORKac www.work.ac - the architecture firm based in New York City and led by Amale Andraos and Dan Wood - proposed a vision where the library's iconic status would stem from its sustainability and its positive impact on the community and environment.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!This innovative approach resonated with the library. The building stands out as an original project rooted in WORKac's significant past experiences. Andraos and Wood have always been deeply committed to issues in education, a dedication that culminated in Andraos' role as Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) at Columbia University, where Dan Wood is an Associate Adjunct Professor. The lower northern side integrates a shallow, fully- accessible ramp that allows these second-floor community and ESL classrooms to open at night when the library is closed, reinforcing the library's role as a community hub. This ramp is enhanced by a public art installation by Montreal-based Daily tous les jours that plays music as users ascend or descend. Despite its modest size, the building has four entrances and a variety of public spaces that seamlessly extend outdoors, connecting with both the residential neighborhood to the north and the Fourmile Canyon Creek park to the south.The building's design is both intriguing and unexpected. Its irregular geometry, a convergence of triangular forms, mirrors and influences the internal layout. Text description provided by the architects. Horsö is a summer house designed for a family with children. The building is situated adjacent to a nature reserve with the ocean of Kalmarsund nearby. The summer house features a subtle and integrated design that complements the surrounding nature. The choice of materials is drawn from the local environment: wood, stone, and untreated timber, which will age gracefully and last over time.Save this picture!Save this picture!The structure of the building is characterized by its low-key presence, avoiding any protruding roofs or architectural elements. Purposefully, the design features low flat roofs and a horizontal orientation that correlates with the surrounding landscape. A lot of attention has been paid to detailing, with consistent features found between the roof, columns, walls, and base. This same level of care, typology of detailing, and measurements extends to the built-in interior elements.Save this picture!The building consists of a lightweight wooden framework resting atop a robust concrete foundation. Floor levels are adjusted to handle potential future water levels on the site. Efforts were made to have as small an impact as possible to the natural terrain, with the concrete plinths supporting the structure helping to preserve the character of the surrounding nature.Save this picture!To break down the scale and visual volume, the main building is divided into two distinct volumes – one private and one social. Large glass sections are set back into the façade and adjoin a sheltered outdoor area. George Kouparitsas Architects led the transformation of the 'Dohori House,' a five-bedroom residence located in one of Ascot's most prestigious cul-de-sacs. Originally a modest pre-war home, Dohori held considerable charm and character that the owners were keen to preserve. However, their brief called for a dramatic reimagining—one that introduced open-plan living, five generously sized bedrooms, multiple entertaining zones, and modern amenities, all while retaining the understated street presence and historical identity of the original dwelling.Save this picture!A core inspiration for the design was Brazilian subtropical architecture, known for its expressive materiality, deep connection to outdoor living, and its seamless transitions between interior and exterior spaces. This influence is evident in the use of robust cast-in-situ concrete for the double-storey extension, which brings thermal mass, texture, and sculptural form to the new addition. At the front, a minimal carport was added, integrating seamlessly with the overall composition. Text description provided by the architects. The COFCO Qianhai Innovation Center is a state-of-the-art headquarters and multi-tenant office complex located in Shenzhen, China. This 190,000-square-meter development is defined by two nearly identical towers, each crowned with a large, glass-enclosed atrium. These atria provide unique identities in the skyline for the headquarters of two related companies: COFCO Group and Aviva-COFCO Life Insurance. The respective 200- and 180-meter towers are composed of three slender masses where the upper levels are carved back and exposed to reveal the open atrium and separate outdoor sky terrace that connect to the surrounding cityscape. Sited next to an urban green belt and local park, the towers are oriented to address this context and integrate closely with the natural environment. A new addition to a 50-year-old corporate office within a century-old educational campus in Belagavi posed a unique design challenge: to expand the existing structure without compromising its integrity, disrupting its daily operations, or overshadowing its historical significance.Save this picture!Though architecturally unremarkable, the original two-storey building held deep institutional value. It had already been retrofitted and was in constant use, making any intrusive structural intervention unfeasible. The expansion needed to respond sensitively to three distinct contexts — its location on a major city road, its position as a frontage to the historic campus, and its edge along the sports ground.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!The solution was a minimalist yet strategic intervention: a new structure that floats above the old, supported by just eight cylindrical RCC columns that avoid existing activities below. This hovering volume, framed by two full-floor-height red trusses, forms an open-plan office of 1,000 sqm, visually light and spatially efficient. A vertical circulation core connects the addition to the ground, forming an L-shaped profile that creates a striking triple-height entry portal aligned with a central tree-lined avenue. This not only marks a threshold into the campus but also frames heritage structures within.Save this picture!Wrapped in a continuous verandah inspired by colonial architecture, the new office engages with its surroundings while mitigating the climate. The verandah serves as a social space and climatic buffer, shielding the interiors from sun and rain.
