  • OpenAI and Google ask the government to let them train AI on content they dont own
    www.theverge.com
OpenAI and Google are pushing the US government to allow their AI models to train on copyrighted material. Both companies outlined their stances in proposals published this week, with OpenAI arguing that applying fair use protections to AI is a matter of national security. The proposals come in response to a request from the White House, which asked governments, industry groups, private sector organizations, and others for input on President Donald Trumps AI Action Plan. The initiative is supposed to enhance Americas position as an AI powerhouse, while preventing burdensome requirements from impacting innovation. In its comment, Open claims that allowing AI companies to access copyrighted content would help the US avoid forfeiting its lead in AI to China, while calling out the rise of DeepSeek. Theres little doubt that the PRCs [Peoples Republic of China] AI developers will enjoy unfettered access to data including copyrighted data that will improve their models, OpenAI writes. If the PRCs developers have unfettered access to data and American companies are left without fair use access, the race for AI is effectively over.RelatedGoogle, unsurprisingly, agrees. The companys response similarly states that copyright, privacy, and patents policies can impede appropriate access to data necessary for training leading models. It adds that fair use policies, along with text and data mining exceptions, have been critical to training AI on publicly available data. These exceptions allow for the use of copyrighted, publicly available material for AI training without significantly impacting rightsholders and avoid often highly unpredictable, imbalanced, and lengthy negotiations with data holders during model development or scientific experimentation, Google says.Anthropic, the AI company behind the AI chatbot Claude, also submitted a proposal but it doesnt mention anything about copyrights. Instead, it asks the US government to develop a system to assess an AI models national security risks and to strengthen export controls on AI chips. Like Google and OpenAI, Anthropic also suggests that the US bolster its energy infrastructure to support the growth of AI.Many AI companies have been accused of ripping copyrighted content to train their AI models. OpenAI currently faces several lawsuits from news outlets, including The New York Times, and has even been sued by well-known names like Sarah Silverman and George R.R. Martin. Apple, Anthropic, and Nvidia have also been accused of scraping YouTube subtitles to train AI, which YouTube has said violates its terms.See More:

  • Anthropics plan to win the AI race
    www.theverge.com
Anthropic is one of the worlds leading AI model providers, especially in areas like coding. But its AI assistant, Claude, is nowhere near as popular as OpenAIs ChatGPT.According to chief product officer Mike Krieger, Anthropic doesnt plan to win the AI race by building a mainstream AI assistant. I hope Claude reaches as many people as possible, Krieger told me onstage at the HumanX AI conference earlier this week. But I think, [for] our ambitions, the critical path isnt through mass-market consumer adoption right now.Instead, Krieger says Anthropic is focused on two things: building the best models; and what he calls vertical experiences that unlock agents. The first of these is Claude Code, Anthropics AI coding tool that Krieger says amassed 100,000 users within its first week of availability. He says there are more of these so-called agents for specific use cases coming this year and that Anthropic is working on smaller, cheaper models for developers. (And, yes, there are future versions of its biggest and most capable model, Opus, coming at some point, too.)Krieger made his name as the cofounder of Instagram and then the news aggregation app Artifact before joining Anthropic nearly a year ago. One of the reasons I joined Anthropic is that I think we have a unique role that we can play in shaping what the future of human-AI interaction looks like, he says. I think we have a differentiated take on that. How can we empower rather than just be a pure replacement for people? How do we make people aware of both the potentials and the limitations of AI?Given its history, Anthropic is considered to be one of the more cautious labs. But now it seems set on making its models less sanitized. The companys latest release, Sonnet 3.7, will refuse to answer a prompt 45 percent less often than before, according to Krieger. There are going to be some models that are going to be super YOLO and then other models that may be even more cautious. Ill be really happy if people feel like our models are striking that balance.Krieger and I covered a lot of ground during our chat at HumanX a condensed version of which you can read below. I asked him about how Anthropic decides to compete with its API customers, such as the AI coding tool Cursor, how product development works inside a frontier AI lab, and even what he thinks sets Anthropic apart from OpenAIThe following interview has been edited for length and clarity:When youre building and thinking about the next couple of years of Anthropic, is it an enterprise company? Is it a consumer company? Is it both?We want to help people get work done whether its coding, whether its knowledge work, etc. The parts were less focused on are what I would think of as more the entertainment, consumer use case. I actually think theres a dramatic underbuilding still in consumer and AI. But its less of what were focused on right now.Having run a billion-user service, its really fun. Its very cool to get to build at that scale. I hope Claude reaches as many people as possible, but I think, [for] our ambitions, the critical path isnt through mass-market consumer adoption right now. What is the path? One is to continue to build and train the best models in the world. We have a fantastic research team. Well continue to invest in that and build on the things that were already good at and make those available via an API. The other one is building vertical experiences that unlock agents. The way I think about it is AI doing more than just single-turn work for you, either for your personal life or in the workplace. Claude Code is our first take on a vertical agent with coding, and well do others that play to our models advantages and help solve problems for people, including data integration. Youll see us go beyond just Claude AI and Claude Code with some other agents over the coming year.People really love Cursor, which is powered by your models. How do you decide where to compete with your customers? Because thats ultimately what youre doing with Claude Code.I think this is a really delicate question for all of the labs and one that Im trying to approach really thoughtfully. For example, I called Cursors CEO and basically all of our leading coding customers to give them a heads-up that were launching Claude Code because I see it as complementary. Were hearing from people using both. The same model thats available in Claude Code is the same one thats powering Cursor. Its the same one thats powering Windsurf, and its powering GitHub Copilot now. A year ago, none of those products even existed except for Copilot. Hopefully, well all be able to navigate the occasionally closer adjacencies.Youre helping power the new Alexa. Amazon is a big investor in Anthropic. How did that [product partnership] come about, and what does it mean for Anthropic? It was my third week at Anthropic. They had a lot of energy to do something new. I was very excited about the opportunity because, when you think about what we can bring to the table, its frontier models and the know-how about how to make those models work really well for really complex use cases. What they have is an incredible number of devices and reach and integrations. Its actually one of the two things Ive gotten to code at Anthropic. More recently, I got to build some stuff with Claude Code, which is great for managers because you can delegate work before a meeting and then catch up with it after a meeting and see what it did. Then, with Alexa, I coded a simple prototype of what it would mean to talk to an Alexa-type system with a Claude model.I know youre not going to explain the details of the Alexa deal, but what does it mean for your models? We cant go into the exact economics of it. Its something that was really exciting for both of the companies. It really pushed us because, to do Alexa-type workflows really well, latency matters a ton. Part of the partnership was that we pulled forward probably a years worth of optimization work into three to six months. I love those customers that push us and set super ambitious deadlines. It benefits everybody because some of those improvements make it into the models that everybody gets to use now.Would you like more distribution channels like Alexa? It seems like Apple needs some help with Siri. Is that something you guys would like to do?I would love to power as many of those things as possible. When I think about what we can do, its really in that consultation and partnership place. Hardware is not an area that Im looking at internally right now because, when we think about our current advantages, you have to pick and choose. How do you, as a CPO, work at such a research-driven company like Anthropic? How can you even foresee whats going to happen when theres maybe a new research breakthrough just around the corner? We think a lot about the vertical agents that we want to deliver by the end of this year. We want to help you do research and analysis. There are a bunch of interesting knowledge worker use cases we want to enable. If its important for some of that data to be in the pretraining phase, that decision needs to happen now if we want to manifest that by midyear or even later. You both need to operate very, very quickly in delivering the product but also operate flexibly and have the vision of where you want to be in six months so that you can inform that research direction. We had the idea for more agentic coding products when I started, but the models werent quite where we wanted to be to deliver the product. As we started approaching the 3.7 Sonnet launch, we were like, This is feeling good. So its a dance. If you wait until the models perfect, youre too late because you should have been building that product ahead of time. But you have to be okay with sometimes the model not being where you needed it and be flexible around shipping a different manifestation of that product. You guys are leading the model work on coding. Have you started reforecasting how you are going to hire engineers and headcount allocation?I sat with one of our engineers whos using Claude Code. He was like, You know what the hard part is? Its still aligning with design and PM and legal and security on actually shipping products. Like any complex system, you solve one bottleneck, and youre going to hit some other area where it is more constrained. This year, were still hiring a bunch of software engineers. In the long run, though, hopefully your designers can get further along the stack by being able to take their Figmas and then have the first version running or three versions running. When product managers have an idea its already happening inside Anthropic they can prototype that first version using Claude Code. In terms of the absolute number of engineers, its hard to predict, but hopefully it means were delivering more products and you expand your scope rather than just trying to ship the same thing a little bit faster. Shipping things faster is still bound by more human factors than just coding. What would you say to someone who is evaluating a job between OpenAI and Anthropic?Spend time with both teams. I think that the products are different. The internal cultures are quite different. I think theres definitely a heavier emphasis on alignment and AI safety [at Anthropic], even if on the product side that manifests itself a little bit less than on the pure research side.A thing that we have done well, and I really hope we preserve, is that its a very integrated culture without a lot of fiefdoms and silos. A thing I think weve done uniquely well is that there are research folks talking to product [teams] all the time. They welcome our product feedback to the research models. It still feels like one team, one company, and the challenge as we scale is keeping that.ElsewhereAn AI industry vibe check: After meeting with a ton of folks in the AI industry at HumanX, its clear that everyone is becoming far less focused on the models themselves versus the actual products they power. On the consumer side, its true these products have been fairly underwhelming to date. At the same time, I was struck by how many companies are already having AI help them cut costs. In one case, an Amazon exec told me how an internal AI tool saved the company $250 million a year in costs. Other takeaways: everyone is wondering what will happen to Mistral, theres a growing consensus that DeepSeek is de facto controlled by China, and the way a lot of AI data center buildouts are being financed sounds straight out of The Big Short. Meta and the Streisand effect: If you hadnt heard of the new Facebook insider book by Sarah Wynn-Williams before Meta started trying to kill it, you certainly have now. While the company may have successfully gotten an arbitrator to bar Wynn-Williams from promoting the book for now, its unusually aggressive pushback has ensured that a lot more people (including many Metamates) are now very eager to read it. Im only a few chapters in, but Id describe the text as Frances Haugen-esque with a heavy dose of Michael Wolff. It would certainly make the basis of an entertaining movie a fact that Im sure Metas leaders are quite worried about right now.More headlines: Metas Community Notes is going to be based on Xs technology and start rolling out next week Waymo expanded to Silicon Valley Sonos canceled its video streaming box There are apparently at least four serious bidders for TikTok, and Oracle is probably in the lead.Job boardSome noteworthy job changes in the tech world:Good luck: Intels new CEO is Lip-Bu Tan, a board member and former CEO of Cadence.Huh: ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt was named CEO of rocketship startup Relativity Space, replacing Tim Ellis.John Hanke is set to become the CEO of Niantic Spatial, an AR mapping spinoff that will live on after Niantic sells Pokmon Go and its other games to Scopely for $3.5 billion. The mapping tech has been what Hanke is the most passionate about, so this makes sense.Asanas CEO and cofounder, Dustin Moskovitz, is planning to retire after the company finds a replacement.More shake-ups in Netflixs gaming division: Mike Verdu, who originally stood up the team and was most recently leading its AI strategy, has left.More linksA new startup called CTGT claims to have invented a way to modify how an AI model censors information without modifying its weights. • Optimizing Test-Time Compute for LLMs: A Meta-Reinforcement Learning Approach with Cumulative Regret Minimization
    www.marktechpost.com
Enhancing the reasoning abilities of LLMs by optimizing test-time compute is a critical research challenge. Current approaches primarily rely on fine-tuning models with search traces or RL using binary outcome rewards. However, these methods may not fully exploit test-time compute efficiently. Recent research suggests that increasing test-time computing can improve reasoning by generating longer solution traces and incorporating structured steps such as reflection, planning, and algorithmic search. Key challenges remain whether LLMs allocate computational resources effectively based on task complexity and discover solutions to more difficult problems when given a larger test-time compute budget. Addressing these is crucial for improving efficiency and generalization in LLM reasoning.Recent advancements in scaling test-time compute have explored training separate verifiers for selection-based methods like best-of-N or beam search, which can sometimes be more effective than increasing data or model size. However, fine-tuning on unfamiliar search traces may lead to memorization rather than genuine reasoning improvements. RL-based approaches have demonstrated promise in generating chain-of-thought reasoning, enabling models to introspect, plan, and refine their outputs. However, increasing reasoning length does not always correlate with higher accuracy, as models may generate unnecessarily long sequences without meaningful progress. To address this, recent efforts have incorporated structured reward mechanisms and length penalties to encourage efficient reasoning, ensuring that models focus on producing informative, concise solutions rather than excessive computation.Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University & Hugging Face investigate optimizing test-time compute for LLMs by refining how models allocate computational resources during reasoning. Instead of relying solely on outcome-reward RL, they introduce a fine-tuning approach that balances exploration and exploitation, ensuring steady progress toward correct answers. Their method incorporates a dense reward bonus to quantify progress, improving efficiency. Evaluations on mathematical benchmarks demonstrate that this approach significantly outperforms existing methods, enhancing both accuracy and token efficiency. Their findings also suggest that optimizing for progress minimizes computational regret while improving solution discovery without sacrificing accuracy. The problem of optimizing test-time compute is framed as a meta reinforcement learning (meta RL) challenge. The goal is to maximize an LLMs performance within a given test-time token budget by balancing exploration and exploitation. Instead of solely optimizing for outcomes, the proposed Meta Reinforcement Fine-Tuning (MRT) approach minimizes cumulative regret by rewarding progress across sequential episodes. This budget-agnostic strategy allows LLMs to make steady progress regardless of training constraints. By incorporating a reward bonus based on incremental improvements, MRT ensures efficient test-time compute usage, enhancing adaptability and response accuracy within deployment constraints. The study evaluates the effectiveness of MRT in optimizing test-time computation, with a focus on achieving high accuracy while maintaining computational efficiency. The study presents key findings, compares MRTs efficiency with prior methods, and conducts ablation experiments on token budget and progress. MRT consistently outperforms baseline models and outcome-reward RL (GRPO), achieving state-of-the-art results in its size category. It also improves out-of-distribution robustness and delivers larger performance gains with weaker models. Furthermore, MRT significantly enhances token efficiency, requiring fewer tokens for comparable accuracy. Additional experiments highlight its effectiveness in backtracking search and linearized evaluations. In conclusion, the study reframes optimizing test-time compute as a meta-reinforcement learning (RL) problem, introducing cumulative regret as a key metric. State-of-the-art outcome-reward RL models fail to minimize regret, often struggling with novel queries within a token budget. This limitation arises from training solely with outcome rewards, which lack the granularity to guide stepwise progress. To address this, MRT is proposed, incorporating a dense reward bonus that encourages incremental improvement. MRT enhances test-time compute efficiency, achieving 2-3x better performance and 1.5x greater token efficiency in mathematical reasoning compared to outcome-reward RL, though several open questions remain.Check outthe Paper and GitHub Page. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project. • I Review Graphics Cards for a Living, Let Me Help You Pick an AMD GPU
    www.ign.com
When youre setting out to build a gaming PC, the most consequential decision youre going to make is choosing the best graphics card for your build. There are a lot of options out there, but picking an AMD graphics card makes a lot of sense, especially if you dont want to fork over a lot of extra money for gimmicky extras. All of AMDs current-generation graphics cards support ray tracing and feature support for FSR, or FidelityFX Super Resolution, an upscaling method supported by most major PC games. While there are more powerful graphics cards out there, AMD graphics cards like the Radeon RX 9070 XT provide excellent 4K performance, but without a price tag that regularly sneaks into the $2,000 range. And if youre in the market for a mid-range graphics card for 1440p, Team Red particularly shines, delivering excellent performance for the money youre spending.TL;DR: These Are the Best AMD Graphics CardsThe best 4K AMD graphics cardSapphire Pulse Radeon RX 7900 XTXSee it at AmazonBest AMD Graphics Card (For Most People)AMD Radeon RX 9070 XTSee it at NeweggBest AMD Graphics Card for 1440pAMD Radeon RX 9070See it at NeweggBest AMD Graphics Card for 1080pGigabyte Radeon RX 7600 XT Gaming OC WindforceSee it at AmazonBest AMD Graphics Card on a BudgetXFX Speedster SWFT Radeon RX 6600See it at AmazonPlus, it has to be said that AMDs graphics architecture powers both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, which makes it easier on developers to optimize for AMDs hardware when console games make their way over to PC. This by no means guarantees perfect optimization on PC games when youre running an AMD graphics card, but it does help. Of course, AMD isnt the only GPU maker in town, so if youre more interested in Team Greens offerings, head over to my guide to the best Nvidia graphics cards.Like with any other graphics card, picking the best AMD GPU isnt just about getting the fastest card on the market and calling it a day. Instead, you need to decide what resolution you want to play your PC games at and, more importantly, how much youre willing to spend on a graphics card. Graphics Card BasicsGraphics cards are, by their very nature, incredibly complex devices. While you dont need to know everything about them to find a great GPU, there are a few things you should know ahead of time. For AMD graphics cards, the first thing you should keep an eye out for is whether or not it's a current-generation part. Unfortuantely AMD just completely changed its naming convention. The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT just launched as Team Red's top-end graphics card, succeeding the RX 7900 XTX. Not only did AMD skip the 8, but it swapped some of the numbers around. The most important thing to know is that any AMD card with a '9' as the first digit is a current-generation card, with '7' and '6' being the preceding generations. Some AMD graphics card model numbers will be followed by an XT or an XTX. This just means that the graphics card is a step up, but without quite being in the next performance class. This naming convention is relatively new, starting with the Radeon RX 5700 XT in 2019. Before that, the common naming convention for AMD graphics cards was three digits instead of four, like the AMD Radeon RX 580 or RX 480. These graphics cards are old news at this point, so you should avoid buying one, unless you find it for $100 or less. As a general rule, you can follow a general rule of higher number = better performance, but there are specs you can drill down into to further determine performance. The easiest spec to understand is the VRAM, short for video memory. Typically, having more VRAM is better, especially when youre playing at a higher resolution. If you play at 1080p, 8GB is going to be more than enough for the majority of PC games. At 1440p, though, youre going to want to aim for 12GB16GB of VRAM, especially for more graphically intensive games like Cyberpunk 2077 or Black Myth: Wukong. If you want to play at 4K, though, you should get as much VRAM as you can afford. At this resolution, you really cant get too much memory, which is why the Radeon RX 9070 XT comes with 16GB.You can also look at how many compute units a graphics card has. Every graphics card will have multiple compute units, each of which will have dozens of streaming multiprocessors. These are commonly referred to as shaders, or CUDA cores for Nvidia graphics cards. For the latest AMD graphics cards, each compute unit will have 64 Streaming Multiprocessors. So, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which has 96 Compute Units, has a total of 6,144 SMs. The last few generations of AMD graphics cards have also included dedicated hardware for ray tracing in each Compute Unit. In the latest cards, each CU has 1 RT Core, totalling 96 for the 7900 XTX. As a general rule, the more RT Cores a card has, the better itll be at handling ray tracing. Once you know what graphics card you want, you need to make sure your PC can actually handle it. Measure your case to make sure it has space for it, especially if youre going for a high-end GPU. Also take a look at the power supply as graphics cards get more powerful, they need more power, so youll want to make sure your PSU has enough wattage. Each graphics card will have a recommended power supply listed, so just make sure yours is beefy enough. AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT PhotosIf You Just Want the Best: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XTBest AMD Graphics Card (For Most People)AMD Radeon RX 9070 XTThe AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is an excellent 4K graphics card that won't cost you an arm and a legSee it at NeweggProduct SpecificationsStreaming Multiprocessors4096Base Clock1660 MHzGame Clock2400 MHzVideo Memory16GB GDDR6Memory Bandwidth644.6 GB/sMemory Bus256-bitPower Connectors2 x 8-pinPROSExcellent 4K gaming performance for the moneyPlenty of VRAMCONSBrings GPU prices down to sanity (in theory)The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT did something incredible: went back to the days when Team Red genuinely beat Nvidia graphics cards from a value perspective. And while right now it's hard to see that, given the shortages every current-generation graphics card is facing, that doesn't change the fact that this graphics card launched at $599, way cheaper than the $749 RTX 5070 Ti. What's more, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is faster on average. When I reviewed the Radeon RX 9070 XT, I found that it was on average 2% faster than the RTX 5070 Ti across my entire test suite. That's not a huge difference, to be sure, but the fact that AMD's graphics card beat the competitor's more expensive option is a huge win for Team Red. It ends up that this is a $599 4K graphics card that can even handle ray tracing admirably albeit not quite as well as Nvidia cards, though its getting closer. AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT & 9070 BenchmarksThe AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT also introduces FSR 4. Unlike FSR 3.1, which uses a traditional temproal upscaling solution to improve performance, FSR 4 uses AI to upscale games to your native resolution. There is a catch, though: I found that FSR 4 has around a 10% performance loss compared to FSR 3.1, but that's not really the reason to go for FSR 4 anyways. Instead, FSR 4 offers much better image quality, which will make up for the small performance hit, especially in single-player games where a super-high frame rate isn't quite as important. It remains to be seen whether or not AMD will follow up on the success of the Radeon RX 9070 XT with a more powerful graphics card, but it doesn't really need to. Right now, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT provides excellent 4K performance for the money, and that's all that really matters. If thats what youre going for, check out the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX. This is an expensive graphics card, costing around $900, but you get incredible performance for that money. In his review, my colleague Bo found the Radeon RX 7900 XTX would either match or beat the more expensive Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 in most tests. While the two graphics cards were priced more competitively back then, these days the RX 7900 XTX is a clear winner when it comes to its price-to-performance ratio. As time has gone on, and Ive retested the Radeon RX 7900 XTX again and again, the numbers continue to impress me. When I threw the RX 7900 XTX in my test bench for my RTX 4080 Super review, I found there were a number of games where AMDs flagship continued to match or outpace Nvidias more expensive card, particularly in games that didnt rely on ray tracing. For instance, in Forza Horizon 5, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Nvidia RTX 4080 Super are neck-and-neck with 158fps and 159fps, respectively. AMDs card even takes the win in Total War: Warhammer 3 by up to 8%. AMD has released a successor of sorts, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT which does beat the 7900 XTX in a number of games at 4K. However, because the 7900 XT has 24GB of RAM, there are going to be 4K games that will always perform better on the 7900 XTX those high-resolution textures are particularly demanding on VRAMIf youre willing to drop a thousand bucks on a single component, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX will get you the most for your money, especially if youre playing a lot of games that rely on traditional performance rather than ray tracing. AMD Radeon RX 9070 PhotosBest for 1440p: AMD Radeon RX 9070Best AMD Graphics Card for 1440pAMD Radeon RX 9070While its priced uncomfortably close to the RX 9070 XT, the Radeon RX 9070 is an excellent 1440p graphics card for the money. See it at NeweggProduct SpecificationsStreaming Multiprocessors3584Base Clock1330 MHzGame Clock2520 MHzVideo Memory16GB GDDR6Memory Bandwidth644.6 GB/sMemory Bus256-bitPower Connectors2 x 8-pinPROSExcellent 1440p gaming performanceBrings AI upscaling to an AMD graphics cardCONSPriced a little too closely to the RX 9070 XTThe AMD Radeon RX 9070 is a little outclassed by the 9070 XT. After all, you can theoretically spend just $50 more and get a more powerful GPU that can push into 4K gaming. But if you already have your heart set on a 1440p gaming monitor, that extra $50 might not be worth it after all both GPUs still come strapped with 16GB of VRAM. Because when I reviewed the AMD Radeon RX 9070, I was amazed by how well it handled games at 1440p, easily able to hit triple-digit frame rates in most of the games I tested. And even in the games where it "only" hit 70 fps at 1440p, you can just turn off ray tracing and get much better performance. What's more, the 9070 makes a mockery of its direct competition from Nvidia, the RTX 5070. Even though both cards ostensibly cost the same, the RX 9070 beats the 5070 by an average of 12% across my test suite. What's more, the AMD Radeon RX 9070, along with the 9070 XT, brings FSR 4 to AMD graphics cards for the first time. This AI upscaling solution doesn't necessarily improve frame rates over FSR 3, but it is way more accurate, leading to much better image quality in games that support it. Luckily, FSR 4 is an entirely optional feature, and you can turn it off in the AMD Adrenalin software if you'd rather just have a higher frame rate and can live with a softer image. Both the monitors and the graphics cards that power them are more affordable at this resolution, and it can still look pretty damn good. You dont need a high-end flagship at 1080p instead, a low-to-mid-range graphics card like the AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT is perfect. You can find the Radeon RX 7600 XT for as little as $309 right now, making it the perfect price for a high-end 1080p gaming PC. When I reviewed the Radeon RX 7600 XT, it failed to impress me at higher resolutions, but theres no denying its power at 1080p. In games like Forza Horizon 5, this affordable graphics card is able to manage an average of 113fps with all the settings cranked at 1080p. Likewise, it delivers 128fps at max settings in Far Cry 6. Thats enough power for a high-refresh monitor in both of those games. Even when the Radeon RX 7600 XT doesnt deliver higher than 100fps in games, its still competitive. Total War: Warhammer 3 sees the 7600 XT managing 89fps at 1080p, which shows off the GPUs strength in games without ray tracing. In games with ray tracing, it gets a bit more complicated. While Forza Horizon 5 and Far Cry 6 both have ray tracing enabled whenever I test them, their ray tracing settings arent as intense as Cyberpunk 2077. In that game, the RX 7600 XT still manages an average of 44fps at 1080p on the Ray Tracing Ultra preset. Thats playable, but if you really want to push your framerate in that game, you should turn down the ray tracing effects a bit. AMD also pairs the RX 7600 XT with 16GB of GDDR6, which is a lot of memory for a 1080p graphics card. There are certainly games around these days that can eat up that frame buffer, but having 16GB on this card will make it last a bit longer. After all, PC games are getting more VRAM-hungry as time continues its inevitable march into the future. Best on a Budget: AMD Radeon RX 6600Best AMD Graphics Card on a BudgetXFX Speedster SWFT Radeon RX 6600The AMD Radeon RX 6600 is a last-gen graphics card, but it's still able to pump out the frames in 1080p games, especially if you play a lot of esports games with friends. Though, admittedly, it just barely squeezes in under that limit at around $199. I reviewed the Radeon RX 6600 in 2021 for TechRadar, and I was surprised at how well it was able to keep up with more expensive cards at the time at 1080p. And that was when the RX 6600 would run you $329. Fast forward to 2024, and the 6600 is still being sold, but for much less, and is still able to keep up in PC games especially if ray tracing isnt a concern. For instance, in my review I found that it delivered 134fps in Final Fantasy XIV at 1080p. And in Horizon Zero Dawn, the RX 6600 delivered around 85fps at 1080p. It might have been a couple of years, but this graphics card can still easily handle most PC games at 1080p, especially if you just play a lot of lesser-demanding genres like MMOs, shooters, and MOBAs.There are some more demanding games that have come out recently, like Black Myth: Wukong, thatll cause some problems for the Radeon RX 6600. But for most people who just want a serviceable graphics card to play multiplayer games with friends, there arent many that the Radeon RX 6600 cant max out these days, even three years later. What is FSR?FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR, is AMDs solution to upscaling tech on PC. This is a software upscaler that takes information from recent frames, as well as motion vector information provided by the game engine, and upscales a lower resolution frame to your native resolution. Before FSR 4, this was a software-based solution, the brunt of the work is done in the same streaming multiprocessors that the rest of the frame is rendered on. This means theres less of a performance uplift than an AI-based model that uses dedicated hardware (like Nvidias DLSS), but FSR definitely improves your framerate over rendering at a higher resolution natively. This is simply because running the FSR algorithm as a post-process effect after rendering a game at 1080p still takes much less compute power than rendering a game natively at 4K. However, because FSR is essentially a post-process effect, it does leave some room for fuzziness in some frames. Luckily, AMD has worked around this, and implemented features like contrast-adaptive sharpening, or CAS, to sharpen up images. However, with the AMD Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT, AMD has updated FidelityFX Super Resolution to FSR 4, which now uses AI accelerators in the GPU to upscale, instead of a software-based temporal solution. This does come with a performance cost, but its much more accurate, and produces a much cleaner image. You can swap between both versions of FSR if you choose, opting for FSR 3 if you want the absolute maximum framerate, or FSR 4 if you just want a cleaner image. FSR has also implemented a frame generation method to further improve performance. FSR frame generation takes the same information from previous frames, along with motion vector information and UI data provided by the developer to add extra frames between each real frame. This also drastically improves frame rate, but can introduce latency if you turn it on at a lower frame rate. Instead, you should only turn on FSR frame generation if youre already getting 5060fps. What is Ray Tracing?Ray tracing is a method of realistically rendering light in 3D scenes. Instead of having a static light source that projects light only where the developers have specifically directed it, ray tracing allows light sources to project light naturally, tracing each ray of light as it bounces around the scene. Naturally, this adds a lot more work for the GPU, especially when it has to be done in real time. For a few years, this was addressed by ray tracing being limited in games. Early ray tracing games like Battlefield 1 limited ray tracing to just reflections or shadows. This drastically improved these elements, but every other aspect of the games lighting was using the same indirect lighting methods games have been using for decades. More recently, as RT cores in graphics cards have advanced, games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong have started implementing full ray tracing, or path tracing, to their lighting engines. This completely replaces all light sources with ray traced lighting, transforming the games presentation. This is only possible because of the RT Cores in AMD and Nvidia graphics cards, and still demands an upscaling method like FSR for playable performance. • Ted Lasso Season 4 Will Bring Back A Dangling Plotline
    www.denofgeek.com
Nearly two years after its season 3 finale, Ted Lasso is finally returning for a fourth season on Apple TV+. While things were wrapped up relatively well in the season 3 finale (the show was originally conceived by star and co-creator Jason Sudeikis as a three-season arc), there were still some threads left open in case the show were to continue. When we last left AFC Richmond, Ted (Sudeikis) had departed London and the team to return home to Kansas in order to spend more time with his son. Meanwhile, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) sold 49% of the team to the fans giving them a stake in AFC Richmonds future as Keeley (Juno Temple) proposed that they develop a Richmond womens team. While Sudeikis and the other creative minds behind the show are still remaining relatively tight-lipped about where this season may go, so far we do know that Ted is supposedly going to be coaching a womens team this season, according to Deadline. Sudeikis himself also released a statement hinting at the series future. As we all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to look before we leap, in season four, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to LEAP BEFORE THEY LOOK, discovering that wherever they land, its exactly where theyre meant to be, he says.Despite the fact that Ted left for Kansas, seemingly for good, at the end of last season, AFC Richmond is still going to be the primary setting for the show. Filming is set to take place in Kansas before returning to the U.K. where the previous three seasons have been set.All of this lines up with a direction for the series that fans have been hoping for that a continuation of the story would follow Rebecca and Keeley as they take on the task of developing the womens team. It is a fairly major leap for the pair, though likely nothing they cant handle with their friends and collegues by their side. And if anything was going to bring Ted back into the fold, even just for a little while, it would be helping those two bring another underdog team together.Even though the premise of the series may be changing slightly with more of a focus on a womens team than the original AFC Richmond squad, that doesnt mean Ted Lasso wont still be full of the heart and soul that fans love. This is just the next chapter of these characters stories, with plenty of familiar faces in talks to return alongside Sudeikis, Waddingham, and Temple, such as Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) and Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins). It may have taken longer than expected for a fourth season of Ted Lasso to get off the ground, but hopefully all of this time spent will take the show in an exciting new direction. Keeley and Rebecca have always been powerhouses in the series, and it would be nice to see them take on even more of a leading role in the story. The show is also a great platform to take on and address ongoing issues facing womens football leagues such as equal pay, and we know that Ted Lasso can handle them with the grace and care they deserve.

  • Hallow Road Review: Rosamund Pike Stars in Perfect Nightmare
    www.denofgeek.com
The worst nightmares are the ones you can believe in. They feature the people you love in your lifeand sometimes the people you fear. And no matter how weird or unforgiving they become, the reason they linger into your waking life is because you recognize the truth beneath the unreality.Nine years after a similarly merciless feature debut, Under the Shadow, director Babak Anvari has again crafted exactly such a torment in Hallow Road, a relentless 80-minute nerve-gnasher that sets out from a parents worst fear before driving toward a destination far stranger and crueler than its already-grim premise suggests. Which is saying something since the film opens with middle-aged parents Maddie and Frank (Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys) sleeping in separate rooms when the phone call comes. From the fact that Maddie is in their bedroom, and Frank is resting fitfully at a desk, we are immediately clued into the idea that something harrowing happened even before the film starts. Yet viewers are left to piece together the shards of a ruined family life because things are about to go rapidly from implicitly bad to explicitly worse. Their daughter Alice (voiced by Megan McDonnell) has apparently hit a stranger during the witching hour of night while driving alone in a Welsh forest about an hour from the family house. Now she wants Mom and Dad to come fix it for her.Its obviously the call every parent dreads, but how Pike and Rhys guardians each react to the bad news infers much about every choice theyve made up to this point in Alices life. A somewhat beleaguered EMT, Maddie commands her daughter to call an ambulance at once and begins instructing her on how to deliver CPR. Frank, meanwhile, demands to know if anyone else has driven by and is already out the door and behind the wheel before theyve gotten confirmation that the ambulance is coming. Like apparently in all other matters, Frank wants to protect his little girl, and Maddie recognizes that there is no escape from what is about to happen. Nonetheless, they drive on, down the Hallow Road into darkness and their final absolution.More a dark fable than a traditional horror movie, Anvari uses the brutal high-concept of Hallow Roads setup and its structuremost of the films 80 minutes exist entirely within Maddie and Franks electric vehicleto immerse the viewer and characters into water thats pitched at a boiling roar before we even have our bearings. He then turns the heat up. As a consequence, Hallow Road becomes an exercise in descent. The first plunge comes from that phone call, but the further Maddie and Frank get down the road, the stranger and more unsettling the tension becomes as the story increasingly creeps toward the vaguely supernatural.Anvari has teased that the movie and William Gillies screenplay is in part inspired by Celtic folklore, which is not to say the film takes on the full accouterments of a ghost story. Yet like Steven Knight and Tom Hardys Locke before it, Anvari utilizes the films confined space within a moving vehicle to careen a story toward the evermore surreal. In the case of Hallow Road that growing sense of incorporeal detachment from the life you left behind takes on a certain fairytale quality as grim as their roots in medieval folklore, and as unforgiving as an Old Testament deity. This is a passion play about how we raise our children. Or how we fail to.The constantly in-motion camera thus uses the tight spaces in a worried parents car to trace every line and fidget on Pike and Rhys faces until their very countenances become haunted things. Pike particularly gives a tour de force in subtlety as she expresses bottomless terror with a single eye in extreme closeup while listening to a strange couple on her daughters phone pull up to the side of the road and ask Alice if she needs help.Prudently, Alices side of the conversation is never shown until the bitter end. Instead she exists as a frozen smile on a smartphone screen, a jejune child caught in adolescence in her parents eyes despite her very real adult problems, which we hear being sobbed and screamed through the screen with a motionless grin. By the end of the film, that blue-lit screen looms across the films own frame as large as the gates to perdition. The cumulative effect is a film that grabs hold of the viewers stomach and refuses to let go. As sleek and ruthlessly shaped as a katana, Hallow Road is swift, visceral, and leaves the audience gutted by the time weve been lured into the wilderness off the side of the road. It stays with you the next morning too.Hallow Road premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival on March 7. Learn more about Den of Geeks review process and why you can trust our recommendationshere.

  • <strong>How Bookshelf Wealth Became the Ultimate Status Symbol</strong>
    www.elledecor.com
This year, the ultimate status symbol isn't having a Ferrari, or a Rolex, or even an expensive designer bag. According to TikTok, the ultimate flex is owning a great number of books andthis is criticalstaging them well.Since its inception in early 2024, the term bookshelf wealth has racked up 1.9 million views on TikTok, inundating ones social media algorithm with cozy rooms worthy of a Vanderbilt estate. Think sinkable armchairs, patterned wallpaper, sophisticated-looking decor objects, fine artwork, and, of course, many books.Books have long been associated with intellect and prestige, but today, they are more than just literary treasures. The way they are arranged and showcased can speak volumes about the homeowners style. Whether you're an avid reader or simply want to present an air of refinement, a well-styled bookshelf can serve as the focal point of a room, conveying a sense of affluence and cultural depth. Inherent in this look, we must add, one must actually like to read. While the bookshelf wealth trend celebrates the culture and presence of books, theres also a design element to it. Its not about cramming your shelves full. Instead, the key lies in thoughtful curation, as well as consideration of the rooms overall aesthetic, from seating to textiles to interesting objects. If you, too, have deliberately avoided the Kindle world and continue to treasure the physical beauty of books, own that in your personal space. Ahead, were sharing six utterly novel ways to achieve the bookshelf wealth look in your home.1. Invest in Custom ShelvingChris MottaliniA chic wall of books subtly adds texture to the glossy walls of this Miami Beach room?First things first: the bookshelves. Investing in custom shelving, DIY or paid, allows you to design a personalized and luxurious display that perfectly suits your space. It can create that library look many of us are going for. Custom shelving offers the opportunity to use high-quality materials like rich woods, glass, or metal finishes, and enables you to tailor the shelving layout to your collection, incorporating niches for art, artifacts, or even integrated lighting. But more than anything, it can create a seamless, architectural look that adds sophistication and a sense of permanence to the room.2. Curate High-Quality BooksFernando Bengoechea//Getty ImagesColor-coded books can create a pleasing, curated look. And now onto the books. Curating a worthy bookshelf is about creating a thoughtful collection that reflects your taste, interests, and values. Be intentional about what mix of genres best suit you, from timeless literary classics to contemporary design and art books. If its something you care about, invest in beautiful editionswhether leather-bound volumes, or aesthetically pleasing hardcovers that not only stand out on the shelf but also serve as decor elements. Include a range of sizes and textures to add depth to your display, and consider special editions or rare finds to elevate the collection. Above all, choose books that inspire you, spark conversation, and bring a personal touch to your space. If youre really getting into it, consider how to organize your books. You can arrange them by color or theme to create a visually cohesive and stylish display that turns your books into an artful backdrop. Theres always the ROYGBIV approach for a colorful aesthetic. One might also consider genre or author name, for a more logical approach to book finding.3. Personalize with ArtifactsMiguel Flores-ViannaFormer actressSarah Kennedy Flugs Aspen home, designed by Patrick Mele, features a larger-than-life libary that is brimming with personality.Personalizing a home bookshelf with artifacts can transform it from a functional storage space into a curated display that tells a story. Incorporate meaningful objects like travel souvenirs, vintage pieces, or family heirlooms to give your bookshelf a personal touch. Mixing textures and materialssuch as ceramics, metals, or woodadds visual interest, while varying the sizes of the items creates depth. These objects bring personality and a sense of culture to your bookshelf. You can also bring in tasteful decorative objects like sculptures, antique vases, and even touches of opulence through accessories such as marble bookends, gold or brass accents, crystal decor, or leather boxes. These luxurious materials elevate the overall look and underscore wealth.4. Integrate ArtworkShade DeggesIn the snug corner of Pierre Le-TansParisian flat, a built-in shelf is complemented by an assortment of artwork and framed treasures.Bringing artwork into your bookshelf design adds a layer of sophistication and creativity. To achieve this, consider propping small framed pieces or prints on the shelves alongside books and decor, allowing the artwork to stand out without overwhelming the display. You can also lean artwork against the back of the shelves for a casual yet curated look. We also love the look of artwork hung over a bookshelf, even over the books. To do so, consider using Command hooks or Velcro strips for mounting, and install hooks or nails underneath the shelf if needed. The key is to balance the proportionspair larger artwork with fewer objects and smaller pieces with more intricate displays. By mixing textures and sizes, the bookshelf becomes an artful blend of literature and visual expression, adding character and elegance to your home.5. Use Lighting to HighlightConstruction Photography/Avalon//Getty ImagesOverhead lighting creates a cozy corner in this home library.Illuminating your shelves with strategic lighting can dramatically enhance both its functionality and visual appeal. Subtle, well-placed lighting, such as LED strip lights or small spotlights, can highlight the books and decorative items, making them stand out while also creating a warm, inviting glow. Consider using under-shelf lighting to illuminate each level, or place a statement lamp on a nearby surface to cast soft, ambient light across the bookshelf. For a more modern approach, recessed lights or integrated backlighting can add a sleek, contemporary look that adds depth and dimension.6. SeatingTrevor TondroVerner Pantons iconic Cloverleaf velvet sofa anchors the library in this Parisian home.Is there any setting more fitting to get to that cliffhanger ending than in an armchair that practically pulls you in? To truly lean into bookshelf wealth, one must consider seating and textiles. Plush seating, such as a velvet armchair or a well-upholstered chaise lounge, placed near the bookshelf, complements the richness of the books and decor (if it's not a siren call for you to take to the stacks for a book to plop down with). We also love a well-placed window seat. Then, incorporate soft, textured textiles like throw pillows, blankets, or rugs in materials such as wool, cashmere, or silk to further enhance the opulent feel. These elements not only provide comfort but also add layers of warmth and texture, creating an inviting space where the bookshelf becomes a symbol of both style and substance.7. Rotate and RefreshTrevor TondroIn an empty corner of hisParisian apartment, Marc Valeanu created a cozy reading nook.Rotating and refreshing your home bookshelf can keep the space feeling dynamic. Regularly swapping out books, artwork, and decorative objects allows you to showcase different aspects of your collection and keep the display interesting. You can introduce seasonal elements, like fresh flowers or seasonal decor, or bring in new textures and colors to refresh the space.Rachel SilvaAssociate Digital EditorRachel Silva is the associate digital editor at ELLE DECOR, where she covers all things design, architecture, and lifestyle.
