• Red Eye: China's Fighter Pilot AI Breaks New Ground
    www.forbes.com
China's Red Eye military AI uses vision models and IR imaging to detect minute changes in adversary ... [+] fighter control surfaces.Northwest Institute of Mechanical & Electrical EngineeringImagine fighter aircraft battling over contested skies, where split-second decisions arent made by a human pilot, nerves steeled and adrenaline pumping, but by an algorithm that sees the invisiblemillimeter shifts in a rudder, the faint flex of an elevatorand acts faster than any mortal could dream. This is no longer science fiction. In fact, these superhuman observational powers are Chinas latest leap in military AI, a system dubbed Red Eye, and it has the potential to upend the rules of aerial combat. Built by the Northwest Institute of Mechanical & Electrical Engineering in Xianyang, under the aegis of Norincoone of Chinas largest military manufacturersRed Eye has the potential to leave human pilots in the dust.As part of our work on the concept of Hyperwar, retired Marine General John R. Allen and I have long argued that AIs true power lies in its ability to transcend human limits, not merely mimic them. Red Eye embodies that vision. In simulations detailed in the December 2024 Journal of Gun Launch & Control, this Chinese AI squared off against the complex aerial acrobatics of an F-15, a jet which, for decades, has reflected American air dominance, particularly in dogfights. To understand how disruptive Red Eye can be, picture this scenario: an F-15 dives low, releases munitions, then yanks into a sharp ascenta maneuver designed to throw off any pursuer. But Red Eye doesnt flinch. It uses a variety of cutting-edge optical sensors to detect the subtlest deformation in the F-15s 2-meter elevator, then algorithmically anticipates the trajectory shift within milliseconds, and counters with precision no human could match. In fact, even before the changes in control surfaces have fully effected the maneuver. The result? Game over. What sets Red Eye apart is not just brute computational forcethough it has plenty of thatbut its unique approach. Using a modified YOLOv8 neural network, it peers through infrared imagery to analyze the physical mechanics of its rivals control surfaces. This extends beyond trajectory prediction, the type of data yesterdays AI pilot models might have been trained on. Red Eye watches control surfaces bend and flex, reading the intent signaled by minor movements of metal before a maneuver even unfolds. Its a shift from guessing where youre going to knowing what youre about to do. In simulations, its shredded the last bastion of human advantage: unpredictability. Sharp jinks, wild dives, erratic rollsmoves that once confounded algorithmsnow fall apart under Red Eyes relentless gaze. You might ask what value such a system has in an era where long range, beyond visual range combat is the expectation, not classic dogfights. Let me explain. First, when two stealth aircraft face off against each other, potentially in an active electronic warfare environment where sensors on both sides are being blinded, it is still possible to end up in close quarters combat. Second, AI pilots have virtually no footprint. They can pilot the largest bomber, and also the smallest missile. So, the maneuvering were discussing in the context of Red Eye can as easily be implemented in a next generation Chinese beyond visual range missile. And finally, loyal wingmen aircraft are expected to be smaller, stealthier and used in larger numbers. All three of these factors increase the chance that they sneak up on or catch up with opposing fighter aircraft. In fact, AI models like Red Eye are perfect for loyal wingmen drones.Red Eye isnt Chinas first foray into autonomous air combat. Back in 2023, the South China Morning Post reported that AI-piloted drones were already dueling in real-world trialssmall, scrappy efforts but a glimpse of what was to come. Red Eye is the next logical step in the evolution of Chinas autonomous military piloting models. It is a system likely destined for heftier platforms, perhaps even Chinas stealthy J-20 and the loyal wingmen it will fly with, such as the FH-97A. We dont yet know if its fully deployedBeijing plays its cards close, as we found out recently when two Chinese sixth generation aircraft suddenly tore through the skiesbut the simulations suggest its no mere prototype. Its a contender and may even be honed quickly and made ready for initial deployment.Across the Pacific, DARPAs Air Combat Evolution program has been testing AI in real jets like the X-62A, pitting algorithms against human pilots in live dogfights since 2023. The U.S. Air Force aims to field 1,000 unmanned warplanes - Collaborative Combat Aircraft, or CCAs, by 2028. In the race to achieving autonomous fighter aircraft control, Chinas not just keeping paceits pursuing its own innovative path. Where known Western systems have leaned on trajectory data and probabilistic models, Red Eyes infrared control surface monitoring feels almost a biological intuition, a predator locking onto prey through heat and motion. That divergence matters because in such competitions its not just about who gets there first, but who gets there smarter. The implications of this technology extend far beyond the cockpit. Red Eyes autonomyits ability to decide, react, and dominate without a human in the loopheralds a shift in warfares DNA. Ive written before about AIs potential to compress decision cycles and to collapse the OODA loop," a longstanding military acronym that represents military decision making as observing, orienting, deciding and acting. We are close to that moment when autonomy will turn mere seconds into eternities. Here, we see it in action. A human pilot blinks; Red Eye doesnt. A human hesitates; Red Eye acts. A human pilot specializes at a few sets of missions. Red Eye could do it all. A military pilot tires If systems like Red Eye show real world results, then I doubt this technology will stay limited to human augmentation. It can rapidly head to mass replacement, a machine that doesnt just fly the jet but owns the fight. Yes, there will still be roles for human pilots, but perhaps not at the bleeding edge of the fight.Critics will cite ethics, and theyre not wrong to pause. An AI that can outthink and outgun a human pilot raises questions weve barely begun to answer. Whos accountable when Red Eye pulls the trigger? What if it makes a mistake? How do we constrain a system that learns from every kill, even its own? For AI lives beyond the death of the substrate that runs it - a formless, unconstrained, networked and diffused brain. But at every stage, as weve seen, the very real, tangible progress of military autonomy technologies are outpacing the theoretical considerations of ethicists. There are lessons here for business leaders, technologists, and policymakers, and they are stark: AIs frontier isnt theoretical anymore. Its operational, measurable, andright nowflying circles around us. The U.S. has the talent and the vision, but real capability is built on more than a never-ending string of prototypes. Real capability demands scale, speed, and a willingness to work around organizational issues and rethink the game. Red Eye may be Chinas triumphbut its a wake-up call for America. The future is here. Are we ready?

  • MLB The Show 25s New Mode Is The Epitome Of Smart Game Development
    www.forbes.com
MLB The Show 25 Diamond QuestCredit: Sony San DiegoIm more than a day into my evaluation of MLB The Show 25, and one of the biggest things that has jumped out at me is the new Diamond Dynasty mode, Diamond Quest.DQ is a rogue-like feature that accomplishes what every development studio aims for: it blends existing concepts into a package that delivers a new, but still familiar experience for the user.Diamond Quest is Conquest mixed with Showdown and Moments wrapped in a simplistic and charming visual package that is heavily charged with nostalgic concepts. There are mounds of rewards in the new feature, but there is also risk with real consequences for failure. In short, you begin by choosing what youre willing to chase during the quest. The better the reward, the stiffer the odds and challenge. Thankfully, it doesnt cost any currency to enter, so there really is no gamble. The opening Quests offers three tiers of rewards:RARE: Silver (79) Juan Soto, Diamond (85) Matt Shaw and (85) Chase Burns, 2 Ballin is a Habit packsEPIC: Gold (81) Aaron Judge, Diamond (87) Noah Schultz and (87) Travis Bazzama, Diamond (87) Garrett Crochet and (87) Bryson StottAs you progress through the board, you run into mini Showdowns, Moments challenges and the Stadium battles are like the strongholds from Conquest. Winning delivers rewards that can be used on your quests as well as some smaller ones that positively impact your overall Diamond Dynasty journey.Losing puts you at risk of losing the things youve accumulated on the quests, and youre also given outs where you can take what youve earned or press your luck/skill.If I have one issue with the mode, its the fact that you have no way to back out of a challenge, Showdown or Stadium challenge without forfeiting. I understand not being able to quit once the action has started. However, it feels unnecessarily confining to not have the option to back out of the initiative in the menu stage. I went searching to see what others are saying about DQ.One X user called it easily my favorite new mode in years, highlighting its simplicity as a roguelike paired with amazing rewards and the bonus of stats tracking in shorter games. Another mentioned the retro vibes it evokes, likening it to old Nintendo or Sega Genesis days, appreciating the risk-reward dynamic where you can lose everything but still feel the thrill of big plays on high difficulties like the new GOAT setting. The reward system tied to difficulty levels is a big talking point. Players have noted that choosing higher difficulties increases the odds of rare or epic rewards, such as exclusive packs or Diamond player items, which has some calling it a game-changer for offline play. One X post from early March hyped this up, saying offline grinding could finally be fun this year, a sentiment echoed by others whove tired of repetitive modes like Conquest.Players who usually play online arent as fired up about DQ.Some are still figuring out how to approach it strategically, with one Reddit thread asking about the best way to tackle tough encounters (like the baseball thing boss) and whether to uncover every tile before hitting strongholds.A few players on Reddit have compared it to Conquest but with a twist, noting its pretty much Conquest but different challenges, while others hope it doesnt replace their beloved Conquest entirely due to its replayability and solid rewards.Like most sports video games that cater to multiple audiences, DQs appeal is split by playstyle. Offline players love itespecially those burned out on online competitionwith comments like Im going to be spending a lot of time on DQ this year popping up.But some online-focused players are less impressed, with one X user saying its fun but way harder than expected, and others on Reddit admitting theyd rather stick to multiplayer modes since CPU games dont excite them as much.Quite honestly, thats not a terrible sentiment coming from someone evaluating a feature that wasnt really designed for them. I count is a win for the feature overall. Its awesome to see how good DQ already is considering its still in the first year.Im excited to see if there will be any post-launch updates, and even more, what it will look like in Year 2. Be on the lookout for my full scored MLB The Show 25 review as well as more tips for gameplay.

Donald Trump issued three orders revoking the security clearance of lawyers at major firms. He described the firms as "dishonest and dangerous" accusing each of weaponizing the judicial process. Each of the firmshas ties to Trump's political opponents and legal scholars say that's a problem.Donald Trump issued another order on Friday revoking the security clearance of employees at Paul Weiss, a major law firm associated with his political opponents. The Friday order is thePaul Weiss, Perkins Coie, and Covington & Burling to have their workers' clearances revoked. He also ordered a review of their government contracts. It comes just days after a federal judge blocked the order against Perkins Coie, arguing it was likely unconstitutional.Critics warn that the president's efforts to bar the law firms' employees from interacting with federal agencies or even entering federal buildings could not only put the firms out of business but also erode the rights of lawyers and people seeking legal counsel across the country.Representatives for the White House, Paul Weiss, Perkins Coie, and Covington & Burling did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.Have a tip? Additionally, the order highlights that a Paul Weiss partner, on behalf of the District of Columbia Attorney General, brought a pro bono suit against individuals accused of participating in the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. The order says allowing employees of the Paul Weiss firm to maintain their security clearance "would threaten the national security of or otherwise be inconsistent with the interests of the United States."Similarly, Trump's March 6 order against Perkins Coie described the firm's activity as "dangerous and dishonest," highlighting the firm's representation of then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in her 2016 run against Trump."Perkins Coie hired Fusion GPS, which then manufactured a false 'dossier' designed to steal an election," the order reads, referring to a memo compiled by the former British spy Christopher Steele in the run-up to the election, which contained allegations of collusion between Trump's campaign and the Russian government. Many of the claims in the so-called Steele dossier were uncorroborated, though some were eventually verified. On February 25, Trump issued a separate memo targeting Covington & Burling. The memo specifically named and suspended the security clearance of attorney Peter Koski, who provided legal assistance to former Special Counsel Jack Smith.Smith led the investigations into Trump and his affiliates related to efforts to interfere with the lawful transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election and the possession of highly classified documents at the Mar-a-Lago social club following his presidency. In each of the orders, Trump accused the named law firms and specific attorneys of weaponizing the judicial process.Big impact on Big LawPaul Weiss, Perkins Coie, and Covington & Burling are among the largest law firms in the United States, with multibillion-dollar annual revenues, according to AmLaw Global 200 Rankings. Each firm employs more than 1,000 attorneys and support staff like paralegals, researchers, and case managers.Anyone working at the firm who works a case involving a government contract or represents a client involved in government work or a claim against the government could require a security clearance, Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, told Business Insider."It doesn't matter if it's someone working on a classified documents case or a case involving terrorism, they have to have clearance to review the material that is the evidence and the discovery in the case," Rahmani said. "Anything that may touch upon national security and military secrets, the lawyers have to have that clearance, and if they're not afforded that clearance, they can't engage in the representation."Removing that clearance is a blow to each firm's business a potentially fatal one, a lawyer representing Perkins Coie said in a recent hearing."It truly is life-threatening," Politico reported Dane Butswinkas, who represents Perkins Coie, said during an emergency hearing in which the firm challenged the legality of the president's order. "It will spell the end of the law firm."Rahmani said the revocation of the lawyers' security clearances could also impact clients seeking counsel, by limiting who they are able to retain to attorneys that the Trump administration allows to have clearance.Politico reported the judge ruled on Wednesday during the emergency hearing that the "retaliatory animus" of Trump's order against Perkins Coie is "clear on its face" and "runs head-on into the wall of First Amendment protections."Howell issued a temporary restraining order, blocking portions of the president's order from taking effect against Perkins Coie staff while legal challenges play out. The orders affecting Paul Weiss and Covington & Burling staff remain in effect."This may be amusing in 'Alice in Wonderland' where the Queen of Hearts yells, 'Off with their heads!' at annoying subjects and announces a sentence before a verdict," Politico reported Howell said. "But this cannot be the reality we are living under."

Voice of America, a government-funded media outlet, became the latest target of the Trump administration.President Donald Trump signed an EO Friday eliminating VOA's parent, the US Agency for Global Media.VOA director Michael Abramowitz said virtually the entire staff of 1,300 was placed on leave.Voice of America, a government-funded broadcasting service that was established during World War II to combat Nazi propaganda, was effectively shut down, following President Donald Trump's Friday executive order."I learned this morning that virtually the entire staff of Voice of America more than 1,300 journalists, producers and support staff has been placed on administrative leave today," Michael Abramowitz, VOA director, said in a social media post on Saturday. "So have I."A spokesperson for VOA could not immediately be reached for comment. The Trump administration confirmed the elimination of the VOA in a Saturday statement."President Donald J. Trump's executive order on Friday will ensure that taxpayers are no longer on the hook for radical propaganda," the statement said.Trump's order from Friday ordered the elimination of government entities that are not statutorily-mandated, naming seven agencies including VOA's parent, the US Agency for Global Media. The USAGM also funds Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia, among other networks.Other agencies named in the order included the US Interagency Council on Homelessness, the Minority Business Development Agency, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The move, according to the White House, was a continuation of the Trump administration's effort to reduce the size of the federal government. In the Saturday statement, the White House appeared to criticize the VOA's editorial decisions from the past several years, quoting a former VOA White House correspondent who said that the network had become a"hubris-filled rogue operation often reflecting a leftist bias aligned with partisan national media."VOA was established in 1942 and has grown into an international broadcasting network serving a weekly audience of more than 354 million people in nearly 50 languages, according to the outlet.Carla Babb, a VOA Pentagon correspondent, said on X she was one of the full-time employees "placed on administrative leave indefinitely.""I'm not allowed to report the news to our hundreds of millions of viewers at this time. Let's hope this is temporary," Babb wrote. "A silencing of VOA will be celebrated by communists, autocrats and ayatollahs whose lies we shed light on."
