  • Tesla Cybertrucks are getting roasted on TikTokone prank at a time
    www.fastcompany.com
Under cover of night, a group of TikTokers known as the Cybertruck Hunters roam the streets, hunting Tesla Cybertrucks in the wild. When they spot one, they pull up behind it and project anti-Elon Musk and anti-Cybertruck messages directly onto its tailgate. The unsuspecting driver? Completely oblivious. The Cybertruck Hunters account popped up on TikTok just a month ago, but its already gone viral with a string of slick videos showing their antics. In some clips, theyre seen chasing down Cybertrucks in a black Lamborghini Aventador, the driver masked as Jack Skellington (the protagonist in The Nightmare Before Christmas).Turns out, the Cybertrucks stainless-steel tailgate is an ideal projection screen. The messages appear razor-sharpalmost like the truck is broadcasting them itself. Me just now realizing you are projecting this onto a strangers truck from behind, one viewer commented. The messages? Anything but subtle.Musk, this truck really is like youtons of hype, one reads. Dont think of this as a truckthink of it as a small penis enlarger, says another. @cybertruck_hunters original sound Cindy Noir Naturally, the videos have sparked plenty of reactions, with one video racking up some five million views. The word Im looking for is HERO, one commenter wrote. I love people who have extra time. The pettiness is top tier, added another. @cybertruck_hunters original sound cybertruck hunters Unfortunately for Cybertruck owners, the public trolling isnt their only problem. Tesla is recalling 46,096 Cybertrucks in the U.S.essentially every unit built before Februarydue to an exterior panel that can detach while driving. While Tesla hasnt released official Cybertruck delivery figures, analysts say the recall likely affects most of the trucks currently on the road. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the stainless-steel trim poses a potential road hazard. Tesla will replace the faulty panel at no cost, but it wont protect owners from the glowing taunts of the Cybertruck Hunters.

  • How bogus stories about Amazon laying off 14,000 managers spread like wildfire across the internet
    www.fastcompany.com
If youve been on Google or virtually any social media website over the last few days, you might have seen stories about Amazon layoffs making the rounds. And if you were curious enough to click through to any of those stories, you might have discovered that Amazon is supposedly planning to lay off 14,000 managers by the end of this quartera stunning figure, even for a company as big as Amazon. But that figure is untrue. Not only that, it seems to have been essentially conjured up out of nowhere, before being picked up by a stream of headlines on Google News, viral Reddit threads, and would-be LinkedIn influencers dissecting it as if it were fact.In reality, whats happening is less a story about an e-commerce giant flattening its management structure, and more a cautionary tale about how quickly and indiscriminately false news can spread in our current media environment. What did Amazon announce? The first thing to know is that Amazon did not announce 14,000 layoffs, nor did it say it wanted to trim its manager ranks by that number. This claim is false and based on inaccurate assumptions, Amazon spokesman Brad Glasser told Fast Company. In September 2024, we shared with employees that we set a goal to increase the ratio of individual contributors to managers by 15% across our organizations because it was the right time to bring us closer to customers and reinforce our culture of ownership. There are a number of ways to achieve that increase without eliminating roles. Weve now reached that goal, which we believe will allow our teams to move even faster as they innovate for customers. The contributor-to-manager plan referenced in Glassers statement was no secret. It was the subject of a memo from CEO Andy Jassy, which was shared publicly on Amazons website months ago. In it, Jassy said the plan would remove layers and flatten organizations more than they are today.Although that definitely sounds like Amazon was looking to have fewer managers, nowhere does Jassy say anything about 14,000 managers. And yet that figure was reported by a large number of online news outletsmany apparently based in Indiajust this week. So frequent were these reports that Amazon layoffs became a top trending search on Google.[Screenshot: via Google]Most of these stories contained vague references to sources, or no sources at all, with some simply attributing the news to media reports. At the same time, many of these outlets were indexed by Google News, giving them an air of legitimacy. And so if you were to scan headlines after searching for Amazon layoffs on Google, you could easily come away with the idea that Amazon is laying off managers by the thousands.Weve reached out to Google for comment about whether any of these stories violate its content guidelines for Google News.[Screenshot: via Google]Where did the 14,000 figure come from?A reverse-chronological search of recent Amazon-related headlines reveals that at least one of the earlier stories cited Business Insider as the original source of the 14,000 figure, but Business Insider never reported that.In October, BI did report on a Morgan Stanley note in which the investment bank estimated that Amazon could save as much as $3.6 billion if it eliminated roughly 13,834 manager roles. BIs headline rounded that estimate up to 14,000, but again, the story was not about layoffs that actually happened. It was about a speculative analysis for investors performed by a third-party company. What could likely have happened is that another news outlet misinterpreted the number, applied it to actual layoffs, and ran with it. Its unclear which outlet was the first to do this, although Indias Financial Express website appears to have published one of the earliest stories. Its article, published on Tuesday, does not include any linked sources or even a byline. (Weve reached out to the Financial Express to clarify the sourcing for the article.)Over the next few days, other outlets followed with their own version of the Amazon layoffs story. Those stories begot more stories, all citing each other or merely reporting the figure as fact. Cue the social media influencers, who presumably saw those headlines and used them as an opportunity to snag some engagement by weighing into Amazons strategy. Why is this happening and why should anyone care?Figuring out whats real and whats fake in our current information environment is difficult enough, but social media algorithms, incentives for engagement and clicks, and a lack of quality control on the part of large platforms are all making the situation worse. Its not a new problem. Last year, we wrote about how a string of bogus stories about $12,000 stimulus checks from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) trended on Google for several days, driven largely by websites that had repurposed old URLs.But these phenomena are not victimless. False news can create real-life harms, whether its raising hopes among low-income Americans that a giant stimulus check is on the way to help them pay their bills, or creating unnecessary anxiety for people who happen to work as managers at one of the biggest companies in the world.

  • Spigens Pixel 9a Teardown Case Makes The Boring Budget Android Phone Look Classy
    www.yankodesign.com
After pretty much haphazardly launching the phone because unboxing videos leaked prematurely online, the Pixel 9a is finally here and lets just say its exactly what we expected. The 9a lands at a glorious $499 price tag, undercutting the iPhone 16E by a cool hundred bucks, although it does make one very visible compromise the back now comes without the classic Pixel camera bumper. In order to really differentiate the budget-friendly A series from the flagship series, Google decided to ditch the camera bump for a more flat, flushed design. The result is a phone thats marginally thicker (rather than being thin with an exaggerated camera bump), but its not really a compromise if you think about the fact that the thicker phone also has a much larger battery as a result! However, the Pixel 9a is more of a performance phone than a flaunter phone, which means it almost certainly needs a personality upgrade something that Spigen does all too well.Designer: SpigenWith its gorgeous teardown-inspired aesthetic, Spigens Ultra Hybrid Zero One case leans heavily into the transparent design trend thats become all the rage these days. The cases semi-transparent backplate, printed with an intricate circuit-board-style design, creates the illusion that youre peering into the phones internalswithout actually having to tear it apart. Its a throwback to the classic teardown aesthetics that once made devices like the transparent Game Boy Color and iMac G3 so iconic. Except here, Spigen isnt just aiming for nostalgia; its giving the Pixel 9a a much-needed visual identity. The case itself is built from a mix of polycarbonate and TPU, giving it a solid feel while maintaining a slim profile. It doesnt add unnecessary bulk, which is crucial for a phone thats already on the thicker side. Spigens Air Cushion technology reinforces the corners, absorbing impact from accidental drops, while raised bezels around the screen and camera help prevent scratches from everyday use. The real standout feature, however, is its MagFit compatibility, meaning the case works seamlessly with MagSafe accessories. Googles Pixel lineup has never officially embraced MagSafe, but Spigens solution bridges that gap, allowing Pixel 9a users to snap on magnetic chargers, wallets, and stands just like iPhone users do. Yes, the 9a has wireless charging! And yes, Im just as surprised as you are.And while most transparent cases are notorious for turning yellow in months, Spigens specially treated polymer never changes color with age. The transparent material doesnt yellow over time like cheap clear cases, keeping the design crisp and clean. The print is fairly durable too, which means it wont scratch out or wear down with time. Id know, I have the Ultra Hybrid case for the iPhone 15 Pro and its served me loyally without showing any signs of wear or tear. Its also kept my phone pristine on the inside, which means after a year or two, Ill still get great exchange value on my old phone. For $44.99, its a bit on the pricier side for a case, especially when youre already buying a phone thats meant to be budget-friendly. But considering it enhances both the Pixel 9as aesthetics and functionality, its an investment in both fashion and function. Googles decision to flatten out the camera bump may have made the 9a feel a little too plain, but Spigen steps in to fill that void with a case that shows that even boring phones can look incredibly sexy when they reveal whats within! The post Spigens Pixel 9a Teardown Case Makes The Boring Budget Android Phone Look Classy first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • IKEA Canada brings sleep poverty awareness through installation, donation
    www.yankodesign.com
I saw a meme the other day that if you get less than six hours of sleep a day, its like coming to work drunk. I could totally relate to it since I suffer from insomnia and I feel like Im always floating since Im always sleepy during the day. But I know I still have the comfort of my own bed and the necessary tools to get a full nights sleep. I just have some personal and medical issues I need to resolve. I can just imagine how hard it is for those who do not have the privilege of getting enough rest and sleep. Designer: IKEA CanadaIn their research, IKEA Canada found out that almost 500,000 children in the country suffer from sleep deprivation due to various reasons, specifically economic conditions. They experience sleep poverty since they lack the basic sleep resources like proper beds and mattresses as well as other things connected to financial insecurity. They have come up with the Sleepless Lamp installation to shed light on this issue and also bring awareness to the help that the company and the citizens can do to help alleviate this kind of problem. The lamp looks like an owl, an animal which is normally associated with sleeping late at night. The device is designed to be a visual representation of the fragmented and erratic sleep patterns that the children experience because of their economic situation. The lamp flickers and then dims occasionally to mirror the disruptions that they experience during their sleep. But this is not just a random blinking lamp. They use real sleep data from doctors to create a powerful and visceral experience for the viewer and bring awareness to their situation. But this doesnt stop at just raising awareness about sleep poverty for children. IKEA Canada has partnered with Furniture Bank to provide Sleep Well Kits for those who are in need. The kit will include a bed, mattress, pillow, bedding, and even a soft toy for them to cuddle while they hopefully sleep better. They will also be refurbishing and redistributing gently used mattresses and sleep essentials. They are even calling on the government to establish a National Sleep Well Program to help address this issue. Ordinary citizens can also help by signing a pledge and also donating to Furniture Bank or even just visiting the Sleepless Lamp installation to further understand the issue. • EU cracks down on Googles search service
    www.computerworld.com
The European Commission has concluded that Googles search service violates the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA) by favoring its own products and services at the expense of competitors. The commission also considers the Google Play app store to be in breach of the DMA, partly because fees are too high and partly because developers are not allowed to steer consumers to other distribution channels.Oliver Berthell, Googles competition director, fired back after the decision by writing a post EU competition rules hurt consumers and businesses on the official blog The Keyword.Googles parent company Alphabet now risks fines of up to 10% of its global turnover, equivalent to nearly $35 billion. EU regulators also hit out at Apple in the second of Wednesdays two rulings.
