  • Astro Bot Studio Head Tells Developers That Its Okay to Make Small Games
    gamingbolt.com
Team Asobi has been seeing quite a bit of success thanks to its most recent platformer Astro Bot. At Game Developers Conference 2025, the studios head, Nicolas Doucet, spoke about how the fact that Astro Bot is a smaller scale game than most AAA releases out there benefited the game, and why more studios should be okay with working on smaller-scaled games.During his GDC talk, Doucet spoke about how the gaming audience in this day and age tends to have several games in its backlogs already. Thanks to the rise of digital distribution over the last decade, as well as steep discounts offered by Steam or Humble Bundle, players tend to buy several games that they dont immediately rush to finish. This leaves little room for new games that are bigger. Smaller games, however, might have a better chance at capturing audience attention.Doucet also spoke about the benefit to developers in making smaller games. Since the scope isnt too wide, developers also have more control over what theyre making and how they go about making it. In this way, making smaller and more compact games benefits both customers as well as developers. From the start, we were in the mindset that its OK to make a compact game its OK to make a small game, said Doucet, according to GamesRadar. So for us, it means that were making something of such scale that we can control it fully. Thats from a development standpoint. But not only that. For the players, we all know that players today have a backlog of games and cannot complete their games, so the prospect of a game you can actually complete is a really persuasive argument. To Doucets credit, Astro Bot is an incredibly tightly-packed game that, despite having several levels and secrets, should take most players between 12 and 15 hours to finish. Doucet spoke about how there could be more play time to be extracted from Astro Bot thanks to optional stuff, but that was never a priority for Team Asobi. Its a game in which you collect a lot of characters But thats never really been the focus, said Doucet in an interview back in July 2024. We never said it absolutely has to be 20 to 30 hours of play. We want to really make a game in which the tempo is constant throughout and that each level is the same quality rather than having moments that are actually a little long.Astro Bot was released for the PS5 back in September. Since its release, the platforming title has gone on to become incredibly successful in terms of both critical reception as well as sales figures. Thanks to the game having sold more than 1.5 million copies in just a few months since its release, even Sony president Hiroki Totoki spoke about wanting to release more family friendly games.Aside from our own review (which you can check out here), if you want an example of how well-praised Astro Bot was with critics, the title was the most highly-reviewed game on Metacritic for 2024.

United Videogame Workers union launches at GDC 2025 in partnership with CWAUVW-CWA is the first direct-join union in North America, initial campaign addresses ongoing industry layoffsImage credit: UVW-CWA News by Sophie McEvoy Staff Writer Published on March 21, 2025 During the 2025 Games Development Conference this week, industry workers launched the United Videogame Workers union in partnership with the Communication Workers of America. The UVW-CWA is the first direct-join union for developers in the US and Canada, meaning it does not represent a single workplace. Both full-time and freelance workers across various disciplines can join, including those working in art, writing, design, QA, and programming. Those affected by layoffs can also join, as well as workers who want to or are organising unions in their own workplace. As detailed on its website, the union has listed the following demands from employers:Sustainable growth instead of short term boom and bust hiring cyclesAdvanced notice before layoffsPaid time off following layoffsImproved severance payExtended health insurance for laid off workersRecall rights those who are let go get priority when the company starts hiring againWorker control over decisions to use generative AIIts first campaign addresses the ongoing industry layoffs, with the union noting that over 10,500 jobs were lost in 2023 followed by a further 14,600 last year. This comes after GDC's State of the Game Industry report found that 41% of surveyed developers reported being affected by layoffs in 2024.Members of UVW-CWA handed out a petition "demanding dignity and job security for all video game workers" during GDC this week, in addition to hosting panels, a rally, and a launch party, as reported by IGN."The creation of this union was not done in isolation; it's a cumulative effort by the thousands of video game workers who have been fighting for years to redefine what it means to stand together and reclaim power in one of the largest and highest-grossing industries on the globe," said CWA senior director of organising Tom Smith."These workers are taking a bold stand, joining together to build power for the workers behind the games we all know and love."CWA president Claude Cummings Jr. added: "The formation of United Video Game Workers-CWA is an exciting new step in our union's work to help video game workers build power in their industry."As video game studios have consolidated, the workers whose creativity, dedication, and skill bring the games to life have become more an afterthought. They are subject to endless cycles of layoffs and rehiring as corporate executives pursue short-term profits at the expense of a sustainable future."Last year, hundreds of workers at developers including Bethesda Game Studios and Activision Blizzard joined the CWA and unionsed. The launch of UVW-CWA follows the ongoing battle being fought by SAG-AFTRA for over 160,000 video game actors against the use of AI.In a recently released statement, the union said it was working to address "alarming loopholes" put forth by a bargaining group comprised of representatives from firms including Activision, EA, Insomnia Games, Take-Two Interactive, and WB Games.

  • ChatGPT accused of saying an innocent man murdered his children
    www.theverge.com
A privacy complaint has been filed against OpenAI by a Norwegian man who claims that ChatGPT described him as a convicted murderer who killed two of his own children and attempted to kill a third.Arve Hjalmar Holmen says that he wanted to find out what ChatGPT would say about him, but was presented with the false claim that he had been convicted for both murder and attempted murder, and was serving 21 years in a Norwegian prison. Alarmingly, the ChatGPT output mixes fictitious details with facts, including his hometown and the number and gender of his children.Austrian advocacy group Noyb filed a complaint with the Norwegian Datatilsynet on behalf of Holmen, accusing OpenAI of violating the data privacy requirements of the European Unions General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Its asking for the company to be fined and ordered to remove the defamatory output and improve its model to avoid similar errors.A screenshot of Holmens query and response, shared by Noyb, which is no longer replicable. Screenshot: OpenAI / NoybThe GDPR is clear. Personal data has to be accurate. And if its not, users have the right to have it changed to reflect the truth, says Joakim Sderberg, data protection lawyer at Noyb. Showing ChatGPT users a tiny disclaimer that the chatbot can make mistakes clearly isnt enough. You cant just spread false information and in the end add a small disclaimer saying that everything you said may just not be true.Noyb and Holmen have not publicly revealed when the initial ChatGPT query was made the detail is included in the official complaint, but redacted for its public release but says that it was before ChatGPT was updated to include web searches in its results. Enter the same query now, and the results all relate to Noybs complaint instead. This is Noybs second official complaint regarding ChatGPT, though the first had lower stakes: in April 2024 it filed on behalf of a public figure whose date of birth was being inaccurately reported by the AI tool. At the time it took issue with OpenAIs claim that erroneous data could not be corrected, only blocked in relation to specific queries, which Noyb says violates GDPRs requirement for inaccurate data to be erased or rectified without delay.See More:

  • Heathrow airport shutdown creates travel chaos
    www.theverge.com
Londons Heathrow airport has shut down after having its power crippled by an immense fire at a nearby electrical substation, throwing thousands of global flights into chaos. Heathrow announced that it will remain closed until at least midnight on Friday to maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, and that there will be no flights operating at the airport during this time.Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage, Heathrow airport posted to X. Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information.1,357 flights were scheduled to land or take off from Heathrow today according to flight tracking website FlightRadar 24. The airport handles an average of 220,000 passengers per day, making it the busiest in Europe and ranked fourth globally. At least 120 flights have already returned to their origin or been diverted to alternative airports, with The Guardian reporting that flights from Toronto, Atlanta, Bridgetown, Barbados, Boston, Orlando, and Newark have been redirected to Ireland due to insufficient capacity at Londons other airports. We expect significant disruption over the coming days and passengers should not travel to the airport under any circumstances until the airport reopens, Heathrow said in a statement to Sky News. We do not have clarity on when power may be reliably restored.Travel journalist Simon Calder told BBC News that this is the first time Heathrow airport has been fully closed since the disruption caused by the Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption in 2010. This is the busiest day of the week at the busiest airport in Europe. Fifteen years ago was the last time we saw the skies close down at Heathrow.Images of an empty Heathrow airport have also started to appear online.Heathrow is the main base for its biggest carrier, British Airways. In a statement on X, the airline said that the closure will clearly have a significant impact on our operation. We have asked Heathrow airport for more information regarding when regular operations are expected to be restored. Its currently unclear what caused the fire at the electrical substation located about 1.5 miles away from Heathrow airport. More than 16,000 homes that are also supplied by the substation have been similarly impacted by power outages. The London Fire Brigade said the blaze has since been brought under control after 70 firefighters were deployed to the substation, and that the cause is now under investigation.See More:
