• Nintendo digital lending feature reveals ‘Switch 2 Edition’ games are on the way
    www.theverge.com
Switch 2Nintendo has revealed something new about Switch 2 games on a day it wasnt planning to talk about the new system. After todays Nintendo Direct stream, the company revealed the existence of Switch 2 Edition games on its webpage about the new Virtual Game Card lending system, VGC reports. The Virtual Game Card system launching next month lets you share your digital games between family members, giving the games similar benefits to physical cartridges that you could already swap between systems. However, Nintendos fine print gives away something else (emphasis ours):Compatible systems must be linked to a Nintendo Account to use virtual game cards. Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games can only be loaded on a Nintendo Switch 2 system. Its no surprise that Nintendo Switch 2-specific titles wont work on older systems; however, this mention of Switch 2 Edition games gives insight into Nintendos plans to differentiate original Switch and (likely graphically enhanced) Switch 2 titles of the same nameVirtual Game Cards page from NintendoAlso makes a mention of "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games" in the fine print www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-sy Wario64 (@wario64.bsky.social) 2025-03-27T17:10:02.954ZAlthough Nintendo says Switch 2 will have backward compatibility with older titles, its unclear exactly what Nintendo has planned here. Nintendo could follow PlayStation and Microsoft, where PS4 games could get upgraded to PS5 Enhanced versions, and the Smart Delivery system downloads system-specific versions depending on if youre using Xbox One or Series X / S. Or it could have separate enhanced versions of games that work better on the Switch 2 and are sold separately. We wont have to wait long to find out how Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games really work, as the companys Switch 2 Direct presentation is happening on April 2nd.

  • Meet Open Deep Search (ODS): A Plug-and-Play Framework Democratizing Search with Open-source Reasoning Agents
    www.marktechpost.com
The rapid advancements in search engine technologies integrated with large language models (LLMs) have predominantly favored proprietary solutions such as Googles GPT-4o Search Preview and Perplexitys Sonar Reasoning Pro. While these proprietary systems offer strong performance, their closed-source nature poses significant challenges, particularly concerning transparency, innovation, and community collaboration. This exclusivity limits customization and hampers broader academic and entrepreneurial engagement with search-enhanced AI.In response to these limitations, researchers from the University of Washington, Princeton University, and UC Berkeley have introduced Open Deep Search (ODS)an open-source search AI framework designed for seamless integration with any user-selected LLM in a modular manner. ODS comprises two central components: the Open Search Tool and the Open Reasoning Agent. Together, these components substantially improve the capabilities of the base LLM by enhancing content retrieval and reasoning accuracy. The Open Search Tool distinguishes itself through an advanced retrieval pipeline, featuring an intelligent query rephrasing method that better captures user intent by generating multiple semantically related queries. This approach notably improves the accuracy and diversity of search results. Furthermore, the tool employs refined chunking and re-ranking techniques to systematically filter search results according to relevance. Complementing the retrieval component, the Open Reasoning Agent operates through two distinct methodologies: the Chain-of-thought ReAct agent and the Chain-of-code CodeAct agent. These agents interpret user queries, manage tool usageincluding searches and calculationsand produce comprehensive, contextually accurate responses.Empirical evaluations underscore the effectiveness of ODS. Integrated with DeepSeek-R1, an advanced open-source reasoning model, ODS-v2 achieves 88.3% accuracy on the SimpleQA benchmark and 75.3% on the FRAMES benchmark. This performance notably surpasses proprietary alternatives such as Perplexitys Sonar Reasoning Pro, which scores 85.8% and 44.4% on these benchmarks, respectively. Compared with OpenAIs GPT-4o Search Preview, ODS-v2 shows a significant advantage on the FRAMES benchmark, achieving a 9.7% higher accuracy. These results illustrate ODSs capacity to deliver competitive, and in specific areas superior, performance relative to proprietary systems. An important feature of ODS is its adaptive use of tools, as demonstrated by strategic decision-making regarding additional web searches. For straightforward queries, as observed in SimpleQA, ODS minimizes additional searches, demonstrating efficient resource utilization. Conversely, for complex multi-hop queries, as in the FRAMES benchmark, ODS appropriately increases its use of web searches, thus exemplifying intelligent resource management tailored to query complexity. In conclusion, Open Deep Search represents a notable advancement towards democratizing search-enhanced AI by providing an open-source framework compatible with diverse LLMs. It encourages innovation and transparency within the AI research community and supports broader participation in the development of sophisticated search and reasoning capabilities. By effectively integrating advanced retrieval techniques with adaptive reasoning methodologies, ODS contributes meaningfully to open-source AI development, setting a robust standard for future exploration in search-integrated large language models.Check outthe Paper and GitHub Page. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project. • A Code Implementation of Monocular Depth Estimation Using Intel MiDaS Open Source Model on Google Colab with PyTorch and OpenCV
    www.marktechpost.com
Monocular depth estimation involves predicting scene depth from a single RGB imagea fundamental task in computer vision with wide-ranging applications, including augmented reality, robotics, and 3D scene understanding. In this tutorial, we implement Intels MiDaS (Monocular Depth Estimation via a Multi-Scale Vision Transformer), a state-of-the-art model designed for high-quality depth prediction from a single image. Leveraging Google Colab as the compute platform, along with PyTorch, OpenCV, and Matplotlib, this tutorial enables you to upload your image and visualize the corresponding depth maps easily.!pip install -q timm opencv-python matplotlibFirst, we install the necessary Python librariestimm for model support, opencv-python for image processing, and matplotlib for visualizing the depth maps.!git clone https://github.com/isl-org/MiDaS.git%cd MiDaSThen, we clone the official Intel MiDaS repository from GitHub and navigate into its directory to access the model code and transformation utilities.import torchimport cv2import matplotlib.pyplot as pltimport numpy as npfrom PIL import Imagefrom torchvision.transforms import Composefrom google.colab import filesfrom midas.dpt_depth import DPTDepthModelfrom midas.transforms import Resize, NormalizeImage, PrepareForNetdevice = torch.device("cuda" if torch.cuda.is_available() else "cpu")We import all the necessary libraries and MiDaS components required for loading the model, preprocessing images, handling uploads, and visualizing depth predictions. Then we set the computation device to GPU (CUDA) if available; otherwise, it defaults to CPU, ensuring system compatibility.model_path = torch.hub.load("intel-isl/MiDaS", "DPT_Large", pretrained=True, force_reload=True)model = model_path.to(device)model.eval()Here, we download the pretrained MiDaS DPT_Large model from Intels torch.hub, moves it to the selected device (CPU or GPU), and sets it to evaluation mode for inference.transform = Compose([ Resize(384, 384, resize_target=None, keep_aspect_ratio=True, ensure_multiple_of=32, resize_method="upper_bound"), NormalizeImage(mean=[0.485, 0.456, 0.406], std=[0.229, 0.224, 0.225]), PrepareForNet()])We define MiDaSs image preprocessing pipeline, which resizes the input image, normalizes its pixel values, and formats it appropriately for model inference.uploaded = files.upload()for filename in uploaded: img = cv2.imread(filename) img = cv2.cvtColor(img, cv2.COLOR_BGR2RGB) breakWe allow the user to upload an image in Colab, read it using OpenCV, and convert it from BGR to RGB format for accurate color representation.img_input = transform({"image": img})["image"]input_tensor = torch.from_numpy(img_input).unsqueeze(0).to(device)with torch.no_grad(): prediction = model(input_tensor) prediction = torch.nn.functional.interpolate( prediction.unsqueeze(1), size=img.shape[:2], mode="bicubic", align_corners=False, ).squeeze()depth_map = prediction.cpu().numpy()Now, we apply the preprocessing transform to the uploaded image, convert it to a tensor, perform depth prediction using the MiDaS model, resize the output to match the original image dimensions, and extract the final depth map as a NumPy array.plt.figure(figsize=(10, 5))plt.subplot(1, 2, 1)plt.imshow(img)plt.title("Original Image")plt.axis("off")plt.subplot(1, 2, 2)plt.imshow(depth_map, cmap='inferno')plt.title("Depth Map")plt.axis("off")plt.tight_layout()plt.show()Finally, we create a side-by-side visualization of the original image and its corresponding depth map using Matplotlib. The depth map is displayed using the inferno colormap for better contrast. In conclusion, by completing this tutorial, weve successfully deployed Intels MiDaS model on Google Colab to perform monocular depth estimation using just an RGB image. Using PyTorch for model inference, OpenCV for image processing, and Matplotlib for visualization, weve built a robust pipeline to generate high-quality depth maps with minimal setup. This implementation is a strong foundation for further exploration, including video depth estimation, real-time applications, and integration of AR/VR systems. Here is the Colab Notebook. • Instagram adds TikTok-like option to fast-forward Reels videos
    9to5mac.com
Meta on Thursday announced a new feature coming to Instagram users. More specifically, this new feature should benefit those who like to watch Reels, Instagrams short video platform that competes with TikTok. With the update, users can fast-forward Reels videos. You can now fast-forward Instagram ReelsOver the last few years, both TikTok and Instagram Reels have considerably increased the maximum length limit for videos. Whereas previously videos could only be up to 15 seconds long, they can now be many minutes long. As a result, some people felt the need to skip or fast-forward through the videos.TikTok already had a fast-forward option, and now Instagram is adding a similar feature to Reels. Users who have already received the update can now watch videos at 2x speed by pressing and holding either side of the screen while watching Reels (via TechCrunch). While some users will certainly welcome the new feature, others especially creators may be concerned about how the short video format is affecting peoples ability to focus on longer content. On a related note, Instagram has been working on a new mobile video editor app called Edits. While the app was expected to be released this month, Meta has once again delayed its launch. The app will compete with CapCut (owned by TikTok) with options for shooting and editing videos on smartphones.Instagram is available for free on the App Store. Make sure you have the latest version of the app installed to get access to the new features.Gadgets I recommend:Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. • CoreWeave's Huge IPO Is Becoming a Disaster, Spelling Trouble for the AI Industry
    futurism.com
The AI industry has been a roller coaster ride, to put it lightly. Selling promises of an automation revolution, startups and established tech giantsearly-adoption disasters, Wall Street burnouts, and a huge drop in support for AI from businesses around the globe. Now, the sector faces its toughest challenge yet: the first ever pure-play AI startup to go public, CoreWeave.Once an unknown player in the AI space, CoreWeave's basic pitch is to provide processing infrastructure to AI companies. The startup rose to prominence on the back of deep-pocketed tech investors like Mark Klein, whose $25 million stake started an avalanche of investments from tech firms, hedge funds, and venture capitalists. To those financiers, CoreWeave represents the "picks and shovels of the AI universe," making this IPO a bellwether for future AI public offerings, as well as the health of the turbulent tech market more broadly. Though investors hope CoreWeave is to the AI revolution what Levi's jeans were to the gold rush, the reality is looking closer to the disastrous WeWork IPO.Initially meant to go public last week at a valuation of $35 billion, CoreWeave has since stalled its bid and signaled interest in dramatically scaling back its value. It's now cutting its share prices down to the tune of a $23 billion valuation, according toSemafor, which notes that the company's stock will begin trading tomorrow. However, a quick peek under the hood reveals a company that's far from ready for an IPO, let alone one this size, let alone one with the future of an entire industry riding on it. As tech critic Ed Zitron notes, the company's form S-1 something of a body cavity searchexplosive growth" in the AI industry, and whose present is propped up by a single customer."CoreWeaves S-1 tells the tale of a company that appears to be built for collapse, with over 60percent of its revenue dependent on one customer, Microsoft," writes Zitron.Though that kind of tie-in with a tech monopoly could have benefits for a young company like CoreWeave, it also comes with huge risks, not least of which is that Microsoft cancels its contract and leaves it for dead. That risk looked a little too real earlier this month, when theFinancial Times reported that Microsoft had withdrawn from a number of formal agreements with the AI infrastructure company due to delivery problems and missed deadlines. CoreWeave has since denied that the tech giant reneged on any of its contracts, though that doesn't change the fact that Microsoft is slashing data center leases across the US and Europe.Any hope investors have for CoreWeave's longevity is now riding on a recent OpenAI partnership and an eleventh-hour cash injection by Nvidia the microchip giant that desperately needs this IPO to work to stay afloat long enough for the "AI revolution" to play out.How it all goes tomorrow is anyone's guess. As Zitron notes, the entire venture is built on the dream that generative AI will become both a massive, profitable industry, and one that depends on massive data processing centers to thrive. That dream is looking more elusive by the day, as China's DeepSeek model squashes support for the kind of AI development CoreWeave represents, and AI profits largelyremain a fantasy. With everything riding against it, CoreWeave should applaud itself for getting this far. As Zitron puts it: "if this company was in any other industry, it would be seen as [utterly rancid]. Except, its one of the standard bearers of the generative AI boom, and so, it exists within its own reality distortion field. "Share This Article

  • Epic Games Store's latest free games revealed
    www.eurogamer.net
Epic Games Store's latest free games revealedAs Spring Sale gets underway.Image credit: Eurogamer/The Gentlebros News by Matt Wales News Reporter Published on March 27, 2025 Spring is officially here and the Epic Games Store is celebrating the occassion with a two-week long, seasonally appropriate Spring Sale. But bargain hunters can also pick up Epic's latest selection of free weekly games, which are available to download now.As is customary, Epic latest freebies are available for seven days - starting today, 27th March, and continuing until next Thursday, 3rd April. After which another free title - currently listed as "mystery game" - will take over. Notably, clues suggests there's a bit of a cat theme for the duration of this year's Spring Sale, given the feline wrapping paper currently obscuring next week's title, and the two free games available right now:Cat QuestNeko Ghost, Jump!Cat Quest trailer, if you're wondering what it looks like.Watch on YouTubeCat Quest, if you're unfamiliar, is the first game in developer The Gentlebros' now three-strong casual action-RPG series. It's a lot of fun too, taking everything you'd ordinarily expect to find in an action-RPG - real-time combat, dungeon crawling, equipment progression, and so on - and turning it into a breezy, super-streamlined, pick-up-and-play package. It also has more cat puns than is probably legal, and you can grab it for free here.I'm less familiar with Neko Ghost, Jump!, but a quick bit of investigatory Googling reveals it to be a puzzle platformer that sees players switching between 2D and 3D perspectives as they attempt to navigate its 40+ stages. It's the work of developer Burgos Games, contains a further multitude of cats, and can be downloaded for free on Epic here.To recap, you've gone seven days from today, 27th March, to add Epic's latest weekly freebies to your Epic Games Store library, after which they'll make way for something new. And if you do head over to Epic's digital storefront, you'll find the Spring Sale is also currently underway. This runs until 9th April, and promises up to 75 percent off selected games.

  • Ellen DeGeneres Sells Montecito Bungalow for $5.2 Million Days After Listing
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Ellen DeGeneres has officially left American life behind and is completely slashing her US real estate portfolio in the process. After relocating to the UK with her wife Portia de Rossi last year, the pair listed one of their final California properties earlier this month for $5 million. The home officially changed hands for $5.2 million last week after just 10 days on the market, according to Robb Report.DeGeneres and de Rossi purchased the two-bedroom, two-bathroom SoCal home in 2020 for $2.9 million. The dwelling is located in Montecito, a celeb-beloved enclave about five miles from Santa Barbara. The 1,691-square-foot pad was originally built in 1954 as a classic cottage before renovations refashioned it into the contemporary beachside bungalow it is today. The home sits a short distance away from the ocean and, according to the official listing, welcomes in a generous amount of natural light. The property comes with its fair share of simple yet sophisticated touches; it boasts a kitchen fully decked out with luxury appliances, plus a primary suite with a private patio, an ensuite bathroom, and a spacious closet. Other luxe features of the residence include sun-drenched patios, a sprawling backyard, a courtyard with a fire pit, a guesthouse, and a pool.DeGeneres flipped another Montecito propertya five-bedroom, 10-bathroom compoundin February of last year to mining magnate Robert Friedland for $32 million. Months later, the former talk show host bought back that estate, known as Pompeiian Court, for the same price as part of a massive real estate deal with Friedland. Unlike her just-listed waterfront abode, the single-floor sprawl features extravagant French doors, cathedral ceilings, a chardonnay vineyard, and a full-size tennis court. Per Robb Report, DeGeneres still owns the Roman-style mansion. According to property records, it was briefly listed for rent in January before going off the market again. DeGeneres and de Rossi also appear to retain ownership of a 1,400-square-foot two-bedroom, two bathroom Santa Barbara property that they bought in September 2021 for $2.95 million.Join NowFlash Sale: Become an AD PRO member today and unlock your design potential.ArrowThe couple are now living in a farmhouse in Cotswolds, a quiet countryside region nearly two hours away from London.
