For more stories from our archive, subscribe to ELLE DECOR All Access. When Marco Polo Stufano first set eyes on Greenwood Gardens in Short Hills, New Jersey, he was bowled over by what he saw. "My first impression was the grand scale of it," recalls Stufano, the legendary gardener behind New York's jewel-box Wave Hill for 35 years. In 2002 Stufano was asked to take a look at Greenwood by the Garden Conservancy, which helps to save exceptional American gardens and lends its expertise to those projects. "At the back of the house, there was a view to a garden and pool, and formal boxwood hedges, and in the other direction, there were a cascade and follies," says Stufano. "The bones of the garden made it possible to see the potential for a horticultural showplace within all its formality."Although Greenwood was beyond disheveled, Stufano knew that he was looking at something special. Landscapes of this scale are the stuff garden tomes are made of, but there was no mention of Greenwood in the histories of American garden design. That's because its previous ownersthe real estate mogul Joseph P. Day, followed by Peter and Adelaide Frick Blanchardwere notoriously private, and the residence was imbued with a do-not-trespass philosophy.Andre BaranowskiPegasus sculptures by Wheeler Williams and a bench on a terrace. But in 2000, following his father's wishes, Peter Blanchard III and his wife, Sofia, established Greenwood Gardens as a nonprofit organization and reached out to the Garden Conservancy to lead the way. In addition to restoring the garden's geometry, views, textures, and hardscaping, the board charged the garden's horticulture director, Louis Bauer, with introducing a new level of interesting and varied plantings to the site, which had already been cultivated in different styles by the previous owners. With the first phase of work now complete, the garden is scheduled to open to the public on April 27.It was Day, a real estate entrepreneur, who first recognized the site for what it was, and what it could become. Only 25 miles from Manhattan, the property runs along a ridge and flaunts a protected view of the Watchung Mountains and the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed South Mountain Reservation. After purchasing the nearly 80 acres in 1906, Day asked William Whetten Renwick, who worked for his uncle James Renwick, the architect of New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral and Washington, D.C.'s Renwick Gallery, to develop his estate.Andre BaranowskiA Japanese granite lantern and a cast-iron greyhound mark a path; yew are underplanted with foxglove and catmint.Day's instructions were to build and acquire the very best of everything, and that's what Renwick delivered. In addition to designing Italianate terraces at the back of the house, summer houses, water cascades, footpaths, and walls, Renwick built grape-strewn pergolas alongside swaths of wildflower fields, commissioned statues and pottery from the finest artisans of the day, and constructed man-made lakes. He built a fanciful Arts and Crafts-style house on the property-a turreted concoction outfitted with grand staircases, Samuel Yellin gates, hand-painted murals, and the latest high-tech conveniences. Then he had pieces of handmade glazed Rookwood faience inlaid into the terraces, the follies, and the faade of the house. It is the blending of these Arts and Crafts embellishments into the formal language of the landscape that set the stage for the gentrified farm it became: Legend has it that Mrs. Day gathered eggs from the henhouse and vegetables from the kitchen garden and was chauffeured every Tuesday to Newark to sell her produce."The bones of the garden made it possible to see the potential"Following Day's death in 1944, the estate was divided and sold at auction; as it passed through several hands, the house and gardens fell into ruin. So when the newlyweds Peter and Adelaide Blanchard purchased the then 26-acre property in 1949, they knew they were taking on a project. Their first move was to demolish the house and build in its stead a Georgian Revival manse furnished with 18th-century highboys and secretaries, and old Frick family portraits that Adelaide, a granddaughter of Henry Clay Frick, had inherited. Peter, a high-ranking IBM executive, took on the gardens. Wanting a French formal garden, he added hundreds of boxwood, bejeweled the grounds with extraordinary sculptures, and, most significantly, saved the Renwick landscape. The Greenwood that horticulture director Louis Bauer is reshaping today is both a palimpsestnow that the boxwood have been cut down in size and number, the Arts and Crafts garden has begun to reemergeas well as the horticultural showplace that Marco Stufano imagined so many years ago."Because plants were always subservient to the landscape architecture, the original palette was rather basic," explains Bauer, who has introduced a virtual embarrassment of new plants, including historic varieties such as the tree peonies bred by famed horticulturist Alice Harding, who lived in New Jersey in the 1920s. "I also make choices based on easy-to-maintain plants," he says, "like variegated bluebeard, which has no diseases, needs no deadheading, and has a big color effect."This new layer of planting will bind together the gardens of the past, while giving Greenwood a vivid new life. But Bauer has also been mindful to maintain the garden's patina-the alluring sense of age, majesty, and drama that immediately entrances all who see it.

  • Teslas sales slump opens rare window for European EV makers
    thenextweb.com
Teslas sales in Europe have plummeted by 42% this year, according to the latest figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Teslas slip came despite total EV sales on the continent rising 28% over the same period. Analysts have linked the slump to Teslas aging model lineup and growing backlash against CEO Elon Musks increasingly polarising behaviour. Whatever the reason, Andrew Fellows, an automotive and mobility expert at global tech consultancy Star, told TNW he thinks the recent sales slide has opened a rare window of opportunity for rival European carmakers to regain lost ground from Musks firm. • iPhone Fold sounds like its doing exactly the right thing with its big display
    9to5mac.com
Apples first ever foldable iPhone is expected to launch in fall 2026. The iPhone Fold, as Ive been calling it, will have a book-style design, and one new leak about its inner display shows Apple is doing exactly what I want with that extra screen real estate.Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station has previously posted details about the iPhone Fold that were corroborated by others, and today they shared a key detail about the foldables inner display. The iPhone Folds large display will reportedly be very iPad-like in its aspect ratio, almost 4:3. This aspect ratio, per the post, is meant to help align the iPhone Fold experience to that of using an iPad, building consistency between the two platforms.Such a move is exactly what Id hoped to see from Apple. As Ive written previously, my dream is for the iPhone Fold to be essentially two devices in one:a slim, modern, powerful iPhonebut also an iPad mini when unfoldedGiving the iPhone Fold a display aspect ratio like an iPad, for the sake of greater consistency, makes a lot of sense and gets me very excited for this device. What to expect from screen sizesAnalyst Ming Chi-Kuo previously reported that the foldable would boast a 7.8-inch display when unfolded.Such a screen size is very close to whats found on a modern iPad mini. Its near-identical, though, to older iPad mini models that had larger bezels and came with 7.9-inch displays.Kuo also said the iPhone Folds outer display will be 5.5 inchessmaller than iPhones are today, but still fairly large compared to the early days of the iPhone. If Apple can deliver a compelling iPhone-like experience when the device is folded, and make it feel like an iPad when unfolded, then for me at least, it will be much easier to justify the expected ultra-premium cost. Are you interested in the iPhone Fold? • Apple set to face minimal fines under the DMA as EU fears Trump retaliation
    9to5mac.com
According to a report from the Financial Times, citing people familiar with the decisions, Apple is set to be fined and ordered to revise its App Store rules in the European Union as soon as next week. The fines, however, wont be as dramatic as initially expected, thanks in part to President Trump. The European Commission underwent a competition leadership change in December, leading to a strategy shift. Todays report says the new commission is focusing more on the compliance of Big Tech companies with the law than on potential high fines in the billions of Euros. Under the Digital Markets Act, Apple could face fines of up to 10% of its global revenue. This would equate to tens of billions of dollars, but the EU is reportedly now aiming for fines that fall below that threshold. Citing its sources, the Financial Times says Apple will face minimal fines for failing to adequately comply with the DMA. The decision to only hit Apple with minimal fines is reportedly driven partly to avoid escalating tensions with US President Donald Trump.Trump has been an outspoken critic of the EUs investigations into US-based tech companies like Apple and Meta. During his presidential campaign, Trump said Apple CEO Tim Cook called him directly to complain about the companys battle with EU regulators. Cook also donated $1 million to Trumps inauguration fund. Since taking office, Trump has called EU fines a form of taxation and overseas extortion. In a directive issued last month, the Trump Administration threatened to impose tariffs on Europe to combat its fines against US tech companies. In January, the Financial Times reported that the European Union was reassessing its investigations of tech groups after Trump was elected. The EU denied that report and said there is no such review taking place and instead there are simply routine meetings to assess the generate state of its ongoing investigations. The plans are being presented to the EUs 27 member states today, with an announcement set for next week. Follow Chance:Threads,Bluesky,Instagram, andMastodon.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • NASA Disgusted by Elon Musk's Disrespect
    futurism.com
Under president Donald Trump and his number one henchman Elon Musk' orders, swathes of NASA are being laid to waste and staffers are fuming. As CNN reports, mass layoffs gutting three offices this year have resulted in employees questioning the space agency's new leadership.Workers affected by the layoffs were only given 30 days' notice instead of 60, as spelled out in federal government guidance and have even been denied time-off awards. Sources told CNN that some affected employees won't receive bonuses, and won't even be able to reapply to other roles in the agency. That kind of disregard for federal workers a key characteristic of Musk's systematic dismantling of the government left them speechless."I think we were targeted," one source told CNN. Denying bonuses in particular came across as "extremely cruel and callous and needless."Why exactly NASA needed to excise its budget in the shortest time frame possible has enraged staff, including those still at the space agency."Everybodys lost confidence," another employee, who has not been laid off, added. "What was the urgency? It just seems cruel."Another employee told the broadcaster that "despite what Trump says, NASA is using a hatchet and not a scalpel" to cut jobs. A source also warned of a "significant brain drain that will affect not only current missions but engineering and science for generations to come."Despite seemingly treating its employees with active disdain, NASA's interim administrator Janet Petro argued that their efforts were still valued."Ive said it before change is never easy, and I know there are a lot of questions about whats ahead," she wrote in a March 14 email obtained by CNN, four days after the layoffs hit. "I want to assure you the NASA workforce and your skills, expertise, and commitment are at the heart of [reduction in force] discussions."It's been an extremely confusing couple of months for the space agency. A massive prior round of layoffs affecting more than 1,000 probationary workers in February was canceled at the very last minute by White House officials.NASA is also anticipating the swearing in of billionaire tech founder andSpaceX space tourist Jared Isaacman to replace Petro. It remains unclear what has delayed that decision for months now. It's possible officials are still evaluating Isaacman's considerable conflict of interest, given his close connection to Musk's SpaceX.In short, NASA has lost a tremendous amount of goodwill among its staff, meaning that Isaacman will ultimately be tasked with picking up the pieces. Whether he'll manage to right the ship and effectively lead an agency that's still planning to visit the surface of the Moon before the end of the decade? That might be a moonshot.Share This Article

  • Researchers Uncover 46 Critical Flaws in Solar Inverters From Sungrow, Growatt, and SMA
    thehackernews.com
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed 46 new security flaws in products from three solar inverter vendors, Sungrow, Growatt, and SMA, that could be exploited by a bad actor to seize control of devices or execute code remotely, posing severe risks to electrical grids. The vulnerabilities have been collectively codenamed SUN:DOWN by Forescout Vedere Labs."The new vulnerabilities can be exploited to execute arbitrary commands on devices or the vendor's cloud, take over accounts, gain a foothold in the vendor's infrastructure, or take control of inverter owners' devices," the company said in a report shared with The Hacker News. Some of the notable flaws identified are listed below -Attackers can upload .aspx files that will be executed by the web server of SMA (sunnyportal[.]com), resulting in remote code executionUnauthenticated attackers can perform username enumeration via the exposed "server.growatt.com/userCenter.do" endpointUnauthenticated attackers can obtain the list of plants belonging to other users as well as arbitrary devices via the "server-api.growatt.com/newTwoEicAPI.do" endpoint, resulting in device takeoverUnauthenticated attackers can obtain the serial number of a smart meter using a valid username via the "server-api.growatt.com/newPlantAPI.do" endpoint, resulting in account takeoverUnauthenticated attackers can obtain information about EV chargers, energy consumption information, and other sensitive data via the "evcharge.growatt.com/ocpp" endpoint, as well as remotely configure EV chargers and obtain information related to firmware, resulting in information disclosure and physical damageThe Android application associated with Sungrow uses an insecure AES key to encrypt client data, opening the door to a scenario where an attacker can intercept and decrypt communications between the mobile app and iSolarCloudThe Android application associated with Sungrow explicitly ignores certificate errors and is vulnerable to adversary-in-the-middle (AitM) attacksSungrow's WiNet WebUI contains a hard-coded password that can be used to decrypt all firmware updatesMultiple vulnerabilities in Sungrow when handling MQTT messages that could result in remote code execution or a denial-of-service (DoS) condition"An attacker that gained control of a large fleet of Sungrow, Growatt, and SMA inverters using the newly discovered vulnerabilities could control enough power to cause instability to these power grids and other major ones," Forescout said.In a hypothetical attack scenario targeting Growatt inverters, a threat actor could guess the real account usernames through an exposed API, hijack the accounts by resetting their passwords to the default "123456," and perform follow-on exploitation. To make matters worse, the hijacked fleet of inverters could then be controlled as a botnet to amplify the attack and inflict damage on the grid, leading to grid disruption and potential blackouts. All the vendors have since addressed the identified issues following responsible disclosure."As attackers can control entire fleets of devices with an impact on energy production, they can alter their settings to send more or less energy to the grid at certain times," Forescout said, adding the newly discovered flaws risk exposing the grid to cyber-physical ransomware attacks.Daniel dos Santos, Head of Research at Forescout Vedere Labs, said mitigating the risks requires enforcing strict security requirements when procuring solar equipment, conducting regular risk assessments, and ensuring full network visibility into these devices. The disclosure comes as serious security flaws have been discovered in production line monitoring cameras made by Japanese company Inaba Denki Sangyo that could be exploited for remote surveillance and prevent recording production stoppages. The vulnerabilities remain unpatched, but the vendor has urged customers to restrict internet access and limit ensure that such devices are installed in a secure, restricted area that's accessible only to authorized personnel."These flaws enable various attacks, allowing an unauthenticated attacker to remotely and secretly access live footage for surveillance, or disrupt the recording of production line stoppages preventing the capture of critical moments," Nozomi Networks said.In recent months, the operational technology (OT) security company has also detailed multiple security defects in the GE Vernova N60 Network Relay, Zettler 130.8005 industrial gateway, and Wago 750-8216/025-001 programmable logic controller (PLC) that could be weaponized by an attacker to take full control of the devices.Found this article interesting? • CoffeeLoader Uses GPU-Based Armoury Packer to Evade EDR and Antivirus Detection
    thehackernews.com
Mar 28, 2025Ravie LakshmananEndpoint Security / Threat IntelligenceCybersecurity researchers are calling attention to a new sophisticated malware called CoffeeLoader that's designed to download and execute secondary payloads. The malware, according to Zscaler ThreatLabz, shares behavioral similarities with another known malware loader known as SmokeLoader. "The purpose of the malware is to download and execute second-stage payloads while evading detection by endpoint-based security products," Brett Stone-Gross, senior director of threat intelligence at Zscaler, said in a technical write-up published this week."The malware uses numerous techniques to bypass security solutions, including a specialized packer that utilizes the GPU, call stack spoofing, sleep obfuscation, and the use of Windows fibers."CoffeeLoader, which originated around September 2024, leverages a domain generation algorithm (DGA) as a fallback mechanism in case the primary command-and-control (C2) channels become unreachable.Central to the malware is a packer dubbed Armoury that executes code on a system's GPU to complicate analysis in virtual environments. It has been so named due to the fact that it impersonates the legitimate Armoury Crate utility developed by ASUS.The infection sequence starts with a dropper that, among other things, attempts to execute a DLL payload packed by Armoury ("ArmouryAIOSDK.dll" or "ArmouryA.dll") with elevated privileges, but not before attempting to bypass User Account Control (UAC) if the dropper does not have the necessary permissions. The dropper is also designed to establish persistence on the host by means of a scheduled task that's configured to run either upon user logon with the highest run level or every 10 minutes. This step is succeeded by the execution of a stager component that, in turn, loads the main module."The main module implements numerous techniques to evade detection by antivirus (AV) and Endpoint Detection and Response (EDRs) including call stack spoofing, sleep obfuscation, and leveraging Windows Fibers," Stone-Gross said. These methods are capable of faking a call stack to obscure the origin of a function call and obfuscating the payload while it is in a sleep state, thereby allowing it to sidestep detection by security software. The ultimate objective of CoffeeLoader is to contact a C2 server via HTTPS in order to obtain the next-stage malware. This includes commands to inject and execute Rhadamanthys shellcode.Zscaler said it identified a number of commonalities between CoffeeLoader and SmokeLoader at the source code level, raising the possibility that it may be the next major iteration of the latter, particularly in the aftermath of a law enforcement effort last year that took down its infrastructure."There are also notable similarities between SmokeLoader and CoffeeLoader, with the former distributing the latter, but the exact relationship between the two malware families is not yet clear," the company said. The development comes as Seqrite Labs detailed a phishing email campaign to kickstart a multi-stage infection chain that drops an information-stealing malware called Snake Keylogger. It also follows another cluster of activity that has targeted users engaging in cryptocurrency trading via Reddit posts advertising cracked versions of TradingView to trick users into installing stealers like Lumma and Atomic on Windows and macOS systems.Found this article interesting? • When it Comes to Futureproofing AI, Its All About the Data
    www.informationweek.com
Dave Link, CEO, ScienceLogicMarch 28, 20254 Min ReadMopic via Adobe StockA hallmark of successful innovation is when organizations get good enough at solving todays challenges that theyre able to focus on future technology investments and use cases. When the forecasting becomes long-term, we get into the realm of futureproofing, where CIOs and their teams weigh specific near-term IT choices and investments to support far-off leapfrog innovation objectives.Futureproofing in the age of AI adds a layer of uncertainty when it comes to planning for fast-evolving capabilities and use cases that may not exist yet. However, enterprises can gain confidence in future-proofing AI by rethinking how they gather and organize the underlying data that feeds AI.Futureproofing for the UnknownIT innovation is about meeting current enterprise needs while also expanding whats possible to achieve through technology in the future. Previously, futureproofing entailed keeping licenses up to date, anticipating software upgrades or end of life issues, and adding infrastructure to meet planned new capacity demands. Now, AIs autonomous and scalable nature is transforming these future innovation strategies. The same self-learning algorithms and auto-resolution schema that allow humans to step back and let AI make more decisions and autonomous insights are also complicating predictions for where AI should be taken, or be allowed to take itself, into the future.Related:Think of future-proofing AI as a spin on the DevOps principle of designing for the unknown, in which developers design applications with the hopes that they will remain interoperable with future technologies. Today, it has become a issue of futureproofing for the unknown, given the highly autonomous nature of AI and the endless possibilities for new use cases. The more we understand this constantly evolving nature of AI -- a market poised to realize a compound annual growth rate of 37.3% through 2030 -- the more we grasp how future-proofing has less to do with the programming and licensing level, and more to do with the data and infrastructure level. Software has evolved from an application-centric to a data-centric design, with data becoming a foundational input for application development.Supporting AI Evolution Through Extensibility at the Data LayerThe irony of future-proofing AI is that supporting its long-term growth requires precise, immediate IT adjustments. CIOs, CTOs and other technology leaders must ensure their teams are covering essential bases at the data layer to ensure flexibility. It's what we call extensibility to accommodate new and potentially unforeseen use cases for AI.Related:Achieving extensibility begins with ensuring consistent data standards and availability at all times. To innovate and grow, AI systems need unfettered access to databases and sources, requiring consistent standards and metadata across different systems for reliability. Furthermore, data should be secured with dynamic authentication protocols that facilitate smooth and safe access.Particularly for AI, its essential to add proper business context to data without over-formatting it. This is ultimately the most critical balance to strike in future-proofing AI: The just right amount of data cleansing and formatting can position data for broad reuse as AI systems innovate. Too little formatting leaves the datas relevance indecipherable; too much formatting and the data becomes too rigid for AI to leverage for novel applications.Unsurprisingly, human analysts have historically managed this nuanced balance. However, recent developments in unsupervised AI have unlocked algorithms that can now analyze unlabeled data to derive emerging structure and patterns.Leveraging New Capabilities and Use CasesGiven that 90% of data generated by organizations today falls firmly within the unstructured category, proper extensibility at the data layer that incorporates both structured and unstructured data for AI processes can drive powerful new applications in the enterprise.Related:For instance, generative AI can now automate many IT operations functions, creating an educated and context-aware support tool that redefines the status quo of what's typically expected from an AI advisor. This is possible thanks to data pipelines that rapidly pull in structured and unstructured data sources and render them into a highly usable framework for GenAI to independently manage configuration analytics, bug reports, knowledge base resolves, standard operating procedures, and service-level agreements.Another example, AI-powered digital twins can harmonize structured and unstructured data together to model the behavior of new infrastructure and systems before theyre built. This allows teams to proactively manage operational issues such as limiting process interruptions and minimizing downtime in a power utility.Future-proofing AI starts with future-proofing AI data. While the finer details can be left to team specialists, C-suite tech leaders must grasp the importance of data extensibility efforts, as successful implementation ensures AI's future. When organizations modernize their data architectures with AI innovation in mind, they lay the foundation for new capabilities and use cases to flourish. And given that most enterprises keep their data archived for at least seven years to align with federal compliance standards, this foundation is constantly expanding. The sooner organizations streamline data management for AI, the faster they can future-proof investments and unlock new value. As AI levels the playing field, the software and technology ecosystem evolve rapidly, only scratching the surface of its transformative potential. These shifts are disrupting traditional boundaries, and the race for unique innovations is unfolding in real time.About the AuthorDave LinkCEO, ScienceLogicA technology advocate committed to innovative IT management solutions that leapfrog paradigms and optimize business outcomes, David Link is founder and CEO at ScienceLogic, a global leader in automated IT operations and observability.
