  • RFK, Jr. Laying Off Entire Office Of Infectious Disease And HIV/AIDS Policy
    www.forbes.com
US Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (C) seen here during a cabinet ... More meeting held by US President Donald Trump on March 24, 2025, is reportedly laying off the entire staff of the U.S. governments Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy. (Photo by BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI/AFP via Getty Images)AFP via Getty ImagesThe U.S. is still reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic with more and more long COVID cases emerging. Bird flu is a growing threat. Measles outbreaks have been occurring. Antibiotic-resistant organisms continue to spread in healthcare settings. So what do you do next if you are in charge of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which is supposed to protect the health of humans in the U.S.? How about lay off the entire staff of the U.S. governments Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy?Office of Infectious Disease Gutting Is Part Of RFK, Jr.s Downsizing And Restructuring Of HHSYep, thats the word from various federal health officials and external experts who work with the OIDP. Alexander Tin reporting for CBS News described it as gutting the OIDP. Its apparently part of the whole HHS downsizing and restructuring plan with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., as the Secretary of HHS thats been posted as a fact sheet. That fact sheet indicates that the number of HHS employees will be slashed from around 82,000 to 62,000. This will include cutting around 3,500 jobs at the Food and Drug Administration, 2,400 at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and 1,200 at the National Institutes of Health. The problem is that the general public may not be fully aware of all that OIDP does and the expertise that will be lost. Chances are that more people are more familiar with the acronym GOT, which stands for Game of Thrones, than the acronym OIDP. But the cuts at HHS are beginning to resemble the plots of GOT in different ways. Each week, its not clear who will be gone next.OIDP Serves Important Roles In Infectious Disease Prevention And ControlThe stated mission of the OIDP is to provide strategic leadership and management, while encouraging collaboration, coordination, and innovation among federal agencies and stakeholders to reduce the burden of infectious diseases. This includes implementing various national plans to prevent and control infectious diseases. For example, theres the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, Vaccines National Strategic Plan, Viral Hepatitis National Strategic Plan and the Sexually Transmitted Infections National Strategic Plan. The OIDP also directs different initiatives such as initiatives to end the HIV epidemic in the U.S., prevent healthcare-associated infections and control tick-borne diseases. Also potentially going poof are the various advisory committees of external scientific experts that the OIPD has been maintaining. This includes the Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability, Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA), Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (PACCARB) and National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC). In fact, sources have told me that the PACCARB has already been disbanded.RFK, Jr. Has Not Yet Provided A Clear Plan On Who Now Will Handle Different Aspects Of Infectious Disease ControlTearing stuff down is a typically whole lot easier than building up things. For example, asking, Who can trash a house will probably get more takers such as many of your classmates if you are in high school than asking, Who can build a house? By jettisoning the staff and advisors for the OIDP, the federal government will lose years and years of experience and expertise.Of course, there is the possibility that some of these initiatives, plans and advisory committees will somehow resurface in some other forms in the near future. However, neither RFK, Jr. nor the rest of the Trump Administration have provided a clear and adequately detailed plan to date of how HSS specifically will be reconfigured and what scientific, health and public health efforts will be covered by what part of this new version of HHS and in what way. For example, no one whom I have talked to at HHS and in the infectious disease community knows where in HHS the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections will eventually reside and how many people will be involved in such efforts. In fact, the word chaos has come up frequently in conversations.Chaos would not be a good way to combat infectious pathogens. The first term of Donald Trumps presidency should have been a lesson on what can happen when you get rid of or lose experts on preventing and controlling infectious diseases. Recall that in 2018, the Trump Administration disbanded of the Global Health Security and Biodefense unit that was responsible for pandemic preparedness. That same year Timothy Ziemer, the top White House official in the National Security Council for leading U.S. response against a pandemic, departed. And guess what happened less than two years later. Hint it rhymes with the words a pandemic. Imagine how the response to COVID-19, which was often described as chaotic, may have been different had the government kept its pandemic preparedness experts. How Will This Affect The Ability Of The U.S. To Deal With Multiple Ongoing Infectious Disease ThreatsIts never a good time to play around with infectious disease prevention and control capabilities without first having a clear plan. This is particularly not a good time. The U.S. still has no clear long-term strategies on how to deal with COVID-19 and the growing burden of long COVID. Since the COVID pandemic emerged in 2020, there have been repeated attempts by politicians from both major political parties to sweep COVID under the rug rather than deal with it head on as needed. But you cant sweep under the rug the fact that people are still getting COVID-19, getting COVID-19 brings the risk of long COVID, and there still arent enough adequate treatments for this chronic ongoing condition.Meanwhile, there is no clear plan to deal with H5N1 avian influenza, which has been spreading among other animals and could at some point become a real threat to humans. Even if this bird flu doesnt eventually become the p-word, other pandemic possibilities will likely emerge in the coming years. How ready will the U.S. government be to deal with them? Hopefully not 2020-ready in hindsight. At the same time, the problem of antimicrobial-resistant organisms and healthcare-associated infections has continued to grow and grow and grow. Last year, I wrote in Forbes about publications in The Lancet that called for more urgent action against antimicrobial resistance and predicted millions and millions of deaths if more isnt done about this problem. Then theres the infectious disease problem that wasnt a problem in 2000 but has become a problem in 2025 because of a big problem. The big problem is misinformation and disinformation. That has resulted in drops in measles vaccine coverage. As a result, measles, which was declared eliminated from the U.S. in 2000, is no longer that. I have already written in Forbes about the measles outbreaks that have been occurring in Texas, New Mexico and other states and how measles can cause various long-term problem, including death, which is a really long-term problem.

  • I attended 2 Tesla Takedown protests in Michigan. The generation that showed up was the one I least expected.

Protestors at the Tesla Takedown protest in Ann Arbor. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Protesters gathered at Tesla showrooms nationwide to oppose Elon Musk's political role.Musk's advisory role under Trump has led to significant federal government changes.Protesters said they fear Musk's influence threatens democracy and impacts the middle class and minorities. On Saturday morning, I observed nearly 400 protesters gathered outside a Tesla showroom in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They were armed with flags and cardboard signs, and they said they felt like America's democracy was under siege."Hey, hey, ho, ho, Elon Musk has got to go," the group chanted as they paced up and down the sidewalk outside the dealership. They waved their signs in the air an assortment of hand-drawn caricatures, digital graphics, and slogans that took aim at Elon Musk and the new Trump administration.More than a couple of signs, I noticed, were emblazoned with the phrase "Fire Elon Musk." One said, "Elon Musk smells like oligarchy and ketamine." Another, more assuringly, said, "I have friends in Canada." Protestors at the Tesla Takedown demonstrations on Saturday came with a host of signs. Nic Antaya for Business Insider The protest in Ann Arbor was one of more than 200 scheduled to take place outside Tesla showrooms nationwide on Saturday. These gatherings are part of "Tesla Takedown," an effort that began in February and describes itself as a "peaceful protest movement" that is "taking action at Tesla to stop Musk's illegal coup."Later on Saturday, I attended another protest outside a mall in Troy, Michigan, with a Tesla showroom. The gathering was smaller, closer to 150 attendees, but more spirited.Protesters lined up on the sidewalk outside the mall and interacted with the cars driving in and out of the parking lot. On the handful of times a Cybertruck passed through, the protesters booed, and the passengers honked in an unspoken battle of ideology and taste in cars. A protester spars with a Cybertruck driver at the Tesla Takedown demonstration in Troy, MI. Nic Antaya for Business Insider Since Donald Trump began his second term and appointed Musk as senior advisor, Musk has made drastic changes to the federal government in the name of efficiency. He's recruited a band of tech veterans, consultants, and lawyers to DOGE to help him slash spending and jobs across several federal agencies. Under the new administration, diversity, equity, and inclusion programs have been cut. Student loans programs are also subject to change as Trump moves to dismantle the Department of Education.Between the two protests I attended, I chatted with more than 20 people about what drove them to action on a rainy Saturday. The answer was almost unanimous. They feared that the middle class, minorities, and future generations were being silenced by the whims of billionaires in the Oval Office."We've never had people in government who actually are trying to destroy our government, literally, and actually working at it, and being bald-faced about it," said 73 year old Maria Marcotte, the mother of Michigan congresswoman Haley Stevens, who was protesting in Troy.In Ann Arbor, one woman who asked not to be named told me that this is a "core assault on democracy." She said there's been a "loss of all democratic norms, institutions, rule of law it's terrifying." She added, "I'm pretty old. I've lived through some rough periods, you know the Vietnam Era, but nothing like this."Several people in Ann Arbor said that Musk didn't concern them before he stepped into politics. Now that he's working with Trump, though, they said he's more erratic than they ever realized."I was a big fan originally. I wanted to buy a Tesla," 69-year-old Judah Garber told me. "I'm really most concerned now with his actions in his unelected role as, you know, a random people-cutter," he said.I noticed that the crowd in Ann Arbor and Troy were primarily seniors above the age of 65, white, and retired from jobs that depended on public funding as teachers, professors at local universities, and social workers. They leaned left on the political spectrum. Some described themselves as "Anti-Trump" or "Anti-Republican" or "Pro-Democracy." Others said they had made a pronounced shift from the Republican Party to Democratic Party in their younger years. As appalled as they were with the current administration, though, I noticed they were also disillusioned with the Democrats in power. Margaret Bialecki, 68, a protester in Ann Arbor said the combination of Donald Trump and Elon Musk is "dangerous." Nic Antaya for Business Insider At the core of any protest is the question of who and what will feel the impact. Several attendees told me that the most achievable goal of these demonstrations is to influence the people passing by, their neighbors, and those who are one degree removed from it all.Gus Teschke, the organizer of the Ann Arbor chapter of Indivisible, a grassroots organization for progressive causes that helped mobilize several protesters on Saturday, said the commerce felt positive."It's a party out here," Teschke said.Recommended video

Sonys PlayStation exclusive policy is a disaster thats killing the PS5 Readers FeatureGameCentralPublished March 30, 2025 2:00am Everybodys Golf Hot Shots some fans are teed off (Bandai Namco)A reader is unimpressed at the idea that PlayStation exclusives have started to arrive on Switch and feels Sony has lost focus with the PlayStation 5 and its games. You dont normally think of Nintendo as suffering from leaks but there were two big ones for this weeks Direct. One leak didnt name the games, but it said that the biggest news at the showcase would not be a Nintendo game and so it was, because Patapon and Everybodys Golf have gone multiformat and are now set to be released on Nintendos console. These games were formally only on PlayStation but all of a sudden theyre on Switch and PC. Sony has not acknowledged this; theres no annoucement or explanation on the PlayStation Blog and theyre getting Bandai Namco to publish them on Switch because theyre embarrassed? They seem to be ashamed and to be honest I understand why. The once mighty PlayStation brand is bleeding away everything that used to make it distinctive and special and for no reason at all. It is the biggest self-own in gaming history. Sony seems to think its a mystery why the PlayStation 5 has peaked earlier than expected but any PlayStation fan could tell you exactly why.Theres been a lot of anti-exclusivity rhetoric in recent years and its all been led by Microsoft, for two reasons: they have very few games people care about, so theyd lose far less than Sony if exclusives went away, and Microsoft boss Satya Nadella doesnt understand gaming and thinks exclusives are a bad idea in general. Now, if I was in charge of Sony Id use that as a reason to make even more, to put more daylight between Xbox and PlayStation. But because Sony seems to be run by idiots now, theyve done the opposite. Theyve devalued the PlayStation 5 by releasing exclusives on PC and now theyre even doing it with the Switch and no doubt Switch 2.Do Sony want to just be another third party developer like EA, Ubisoft, and Xbox? If thats all theyve ever wanted they could have done it decades ago, but their popularity and money has been made by being a console manufacturer. They make the default console of every generation, the one that has every third party game and tons of great first party ones on top.Now theyre losing that. The only difference between the PlayStation 5 and a PC is that the PC has better graphics and Sony exclusives take a little longer to turn up sometimes, but they always get there in the end. Now theyre even going through the back catalogue and bringing over even more ex-exclusives.At the same time weve got less single-player games than ever, more flop live service games than ever, and no communication about whats coming out or when. Whens Wolverine out? It was announced four years ago and we still dont even know what year its coming out. Intergalactic apparently wont be until at least 2027 so where have all the games gone?Im losing faith, I dont mind telling you. To me the best bet for the next generation looks like a PC and a Switch 2. That gives me access to every game and is considerably cheaper (all PC games are cheaper than on consoles) and less frustrating than getting a PlayStation 6.More TrendingThe whole PlayStation brand feels like its just being left to rot. Theres no direction, no one obvious in charge, and no games. To think how amazing the PlayStation 4, and even the first two years of the PlayStation 5, was I cant believe were in the position we are now.By reader Tom Meadows Patapon 1+2 Replay is also coming to Switch and PC (Bandai Namco)The readers features do not necessarily represent the views of GameCentral or Metro. You can submit your own 500 to 600-word reader feature at any time, which if used will be published in the next appropriate weekend slot. As anyone who has any experience with the series will know all too well, the Resident Evil games can end up getting pretty outlandish with their stories, resulting in plenty of twists and turns throughout the wider narrative to keep players guessing. This can also apply to the gameplay, where a game can suddenly introduce a new enemy or mechanic seemingly out of nowhere, making for some pretty bizarre segments. While the majority of these shocking moments are fondly remembered by fans, others, for one reason or another, ended up receiving mixed opinions, with some loving them, while others questioned if they were really necessary.
