The rush to capitalize on the buzz around AI has led tech companies to dramatically expand their data center footprints. Thats been good news for companies like Nvidia, but it has also led to unprecedented growth in the power industry.New and expanded data centers are expected to double the sectors power demand by 2029, according to JLL. As a result, developers and tech companies have been working overtime to lock in capacity. Nuclear and natural gas have gotten boosts from the forecasted demand, but few technologies have benefited in the near term like solar.Though solar power suffers from what experts call intermittency it wont produce if the sun isnt shining the upsides have been so significant that companies have been inking large deals at a rapid pace.Unlike advanced nuclear reactors, which have yet to be deployed at commercial scale, solar power is proven technology. And unlike new natural gas power plants, which take years to plan and construct, the average completion time for a new solar farm is about 18 months. Plus, its one of the lowest-cost sources of new generating capacity.Since the start of 2025, tech companies and data center operators have backed 12 solar deals, each adding more than 100 megawatts of capacity to the grid.JanuaryMeta kicked off the year with a 200-megawatt solar deal with multinational electric utility Engie. The purchase went toward a solar farm near one of the companys existing data centers in Texas. At the time of the deal, Meta already had over 12 gigawatts of generating capacity in its renewable portfolio.Later in January, the Stargate AI partnership between OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank Group was reported by Bloomberg to be powered, at least in part, by solar. SB Energy, which is part of SoftBanks portfolio, is expected to develop solar installations backed by grid-scale batteries.Meta closed out the month with another massive solar deal, this one with Spanish renewable developer Zelestra. The contract was for 595 megawatts of capacity.FebruaryMeta continued its streak in February, investing in a 505-megawatt solar project with Cypress Creek Renewables, which is developing the massive installation in Coleman County, Texas about 150 miles northwest of Austin.Microsoft entered the fray in February, too. The company has long been a buyer of renewable energy to power its operations, and added another 389 megawatts of solar in a deal with EDP Renewables North America. The contract covers three different solar farms, two in Illinois and one in Texas. The purchases have helped Microsoft stay on top of its pledge to power its operations using zero carbon power.Amazon also made a big purchase, backing a hybrid project on the Iberian Peninsula that includes wind, solar, and pumped-hydroelectric storage. The deal included 476 megawatts total, of which 212 megawatts are solar.Outside of the U.S., data center operators have also been investing in solar. In India, CtrlS built its own 125-megawatt facility in two phases, the first half of which was finished in June 2024 with the second completed in early February. In South America, Telecom Argentina agreed to buy electricity from a 130-megawatt solar farm developed by MSU Green Energy.MarchMicrosoft added another three solar developments in March, again focusing on the Midwest. The projects span Illinois, Michigan, and Missouri, and theyre being developed by AES. Together, they will provide Microsoft with 475 megawatts of capacity, adding to its considerable 34-gigawatt portfolio.Cisco got in the game with a 100-megawatt deal with X-Elio, a solar developer owned by Brookfield, an asset manager that has bet big on renewables. The power purchase agreements see Cisco buying capacity from two different Texas solar projects.Meta added another 200 megawatts of solar to its portfolio in March in a deal with RWE. The solar farm will be built just southeast of Austin.In Italy, data center operator Data4 signed a 10-year deal with utility Edison Energia to buy power from a 148-megawatt solar farm northwest of Rome.More deals likelyAs tech companies race to add AI to seemingly every product and possible market, data centers have been expanding to keep pace. That growth requires power, and few technologies are as well positioned as solar power.Utility-scale solar is already one of the cheapest forms of new generating capacity without counting subsidies, undercutting everything except onshore wind. Its also quick to deployand can be commissioned in phases, allowing data centers to draw power before the entire project is finished.Those qualities have combined to give solar a near-term advantage, racking up deals with Big Tech companies and data center developers. Its a trend thats likely to continue.

One of the largest mills in Central Falls, Rhode Island, is this complex tucked away on Foundry Street. Constructed in phases beginning in 1863, the site was originally owned by the firm of Fales & Jenks, manufacturers, and it was the first major factory in the town to not be built on a river, but on the railroad, showcasing a shift in the transportation of goods along with the increasing availability of steam power, relieving mill owners from having to build on the rivers. Fales & Jenks manufactured textile machinery here for just a few years until they moved to Pawtucket, and the complex was purchased by A. & W. Sprague in 1865 and after slight enlargement, was used as a flax mill until the Spragues failure in 1873. In the late 19th century, the mill was occupied by the U.S. Cotton Company. The oldest buildings are brick with granite lintels under a monitor roof. Later additions include a massive brick factory with a tower with castellated parapet. The small, two-story gable-roofed building at the corner was the mill office. The complex is today owned and maintained by the Murdock Webbing Company.

Den of Thieves 2Den of Thieves 2Gerard Butler has found another sleeper action series that has recieved love from both critics and audiences, Den of Thieves, which has just gotten its sequel onto Netflix the past few weeks, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.But after a while on top, a new Netflix original movie has unseated it, which is The Life List, a romantic comedy starring a cast you may not know, though I certainly know Mrs. Coach, Connie Britton, who has a part. Star Sofia Carson recently had a supporting role in Netflixs Carry-On, which has gone on to be the second-most watched Netflix original film in the sites history (she also starred in Purple Hearts). So, thats good. The male lead is Kyle Allen, who I dont know, but apparently he had a part in Spielbergs West Side Story.Top 10NetflixThe film has opened up a somewhat traditional critic/fan split, albeit there are not that many reviews in for either category just now. It has a poor 36% critic score, but thats only 11 reviews. Its 74% audience score is better, and it has as solid 7.1/10 on IMDB. And anecdotally, my wife really like it. Heres the synopsis: When Alex Rose's mother sends her on a quest to complete her childhood bucket list, it takes her on a journey that will make you both laugh and cry as she uncovers family secrets, finds romance, and discovers herself along the way.I feel like a film described as someone discovering herself along the way is going to be pretty trope-y, but whatever, its harmless, and Netflix has produced far worse films as of late. Speaking of that, The Electric State and its 15% score is all the way down to #9 on the list, falling faster than its competitors and while Netflix wont say it, is undoubtedly a big disappointment for them. Movies like Kraven and Trap remain above it.Talk to Me, one of the 2023s best horror movies, is at #3 and I suggest you watch that. Rising up the list is Con Mum, a True Crime story, and those always tend to do pretty well. I might expect it to grab a few more spots in the coming days. Updated March 30 with more details of whats coming.The next big Apple iPhone update is iOS 18.4, with new Apple Intelligence featuresthough no giant leap for Siri, which made its own headlines recently. There are also new emoji (including one youll surely need) and a new Vision Pro app. It now looks like its coming a week earlier than expected. Details and new release date, below and theres a new report which chimes with my notes below.Apple iOS 18.4 is coming to iPhones imminently. In it, he comments that the latest beta versions of iOS 18.4, alongside beta releases for the iPad, Vision Pro, Apple TV, Mac and Apple Watch, have all just landed and theyre seen as release candidates (meaning theyre close to being ready for customers). As is usually the case with these nearly finished updates, there are few visible changes from earlier betas. But they do represent fairly big upgrades from the past public releases, Gurman says.He then talks about whats coming, and hits on several of the points Ive focused on as well, as youll read below. For iOS, the enhancements include the ability to see priority notifications in your lock screen and a new food section in News+. Apple Intelligence will work in several new languages, and there are additional music options in the Control Center, he explains.He also notes that the Mac and iPad will gain the Apple Intelligence features for the Mail app already found on the iPhone 16 series, for instance.Gurman doesnt specify the date, though the fact that hes writing about iOS 18.4 now might suggest that itll be out before his next newsletter in a weeks time.iOS 18.4 Apple Intelligence UpdatesWhile we may yearn for all-new Siri now, there are other features to be getting on with, such as priority notifications which sorts through stuff to bring the important notifications to your attention. Apples just-published release notes tell us a new style is coming to Image Playground, called Sketch, to go with Animation and Illustration: more ways to let your imagination take flight.And, in a very big deal for Apple Intelligence, itll be supported with eight more languages including French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Theres more, including updates for AirPods Max with USB-C.iOS 18.4 Release Date: Sooner Than ExpectedApple had dropped hints about the release date, so we knew early April was on the cards. The arrival of a second Release Candidate beta on March 28 suggests Apple has got ahead of itself and it will be sooner that we thought.It looks like it will be Tuesday, April 1 at 10 a.m. Pacific. But Apple has recently taken to releasing software on a Monday so I think Monday, March 31, though less likely, just might be a possibility, too.Not long now.

Apple likes to stick around with each product design refresh for at least a few generations. Take for example the M4 MacBook Pro, which is still carrying the same design language that was first introduced atop the M1 series models back in 2021. Things could finally change next year. In terms of major new Mac designs, I dont expect the MacBook Pro to get an overhaul until around 2026 when the M6 model is due to come out, says a Bloomberg report. They might, however, stick with the same aesthetic formula as their respective M4-series counterparts. Some will appreciate the extra screen real estate, no doubt, but theres definitely a trade-off in mobility, said Digital Trends review of the current-gen MacBook Pro. The one eyesore in the whole experience to me is still the notch in the display. I find it quite ugly and intrusive, and the way it cuts into the menu bar can be clumsy, especially on the 14-inch model, the review adds.The long-rumored design refresh could finally hit the shelves in 2026. And it could be a big one from multiple perspectives. It could be thinner and lighter, but more importantly, it might phase out the mini-LED panel in favor of OLED screens.Mark Coppock / Digital TrendsMost importantly, Apple is expected to get rid of the ugly boat-shaped notch, that was first introduced on the iPhone X, and subsequently made its way to Apples laptops, starting in 2021. A touch-sensitive display, however, remains a topic of hot debate.
