• Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost Buy $13 Million Manhattan Penthouse
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost have a lovely new place to rest their heads in the Big Apple. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Oscar-nominated actor and the Saturday Night Live star, who were wed in 2020, paid $13 million for a prewar penthouse in Manhattans Carnegie Hill neighborhood. The sellers of the 6,000-square-foot co-op unit first listed it in 2018 with a $27.5 million asking price, so you could say Johansson and Jost got a deal on the six-bedroom, seven-bathroom dwelling. The 14-room pad last sold in 2006, also for $13 million.Spanning three floors, the apartment boasts an impressive amount of outdoor space, with five terraces and eight balconies. Six wood-burning fireplaces grace the unit, which rests atop a 1930s structure designed by Rosario Candela.A private elevator opens into a central gallery where sunlight pools, thanks to floor-to-ceiling French doors that spill out onto a Juliet balcony. An adjacent sprawling living room features Parquet de Versailles floors, Venetian plastered walls, a white marble fireplace, and six more Juliet balconies. Nearby, the formal dining room sports herringbone floors and goatskin-paneled walls, per the listing.Join NowFlash Sale: Become an AD PRO member today and unlock your design potential.ArrowA grand oak-paneled library rests on the opposite side of the gallery, complete with a cozy bookshelf-lined alcove, terrace access, and views of Central Park. The lowest floor is rounded out with a powder room and a well-equipped galley kitchen that seems to stretch on for miles, ending with a breakfast room through a set of bronze and glass pocket doors. The top two levels are devoted to the bedrooms and bathrooms; the primary suite spans the entire top floor, with a sprawling terrace in tow.

It only requires one AA battery, which is a huge plus, and sets you back just $27.Schoolhouse x Lemnos Rudy Plywood Wall ClockYou can always rely on Schoolhouse for decor with plenty of personality. This piece shows what the brand does best with a clean and minimal typeface encircled by a bent plywood frame. Its designed by Lemnos, a Japanese brand known for their exceptionally well-crafted timepieces.HAY Wall ClockJasper Morrisons take on wall clocks is simple and modern, ambiguous enough to have been designed anywhere between the 60s and the last decade (though it was actually produced in 2008). With a clean, uncluttered design set off by only even numbers, its ideal for anyone who wants a minimal design thats still easy to read.Georg Jensen Koppel Wall ClockKnown for his timeless designs and silversmithing, Danish designer Georg Jensens wall clock, inspired by the streets of Copenhagen, considers craftsmanship and clock design to create something both high-quality and aesthetic.MacKenzie-Childs Courtly Check Wall ClockFor any living room that could use a charming focal point, this number from Mackenzie Childs in their signature courtly check indicates style, and design know-how. The name is a nod to the Italian word for setbacks, and the clock is meant to provide a little levity during the days tougher moments. Made of 100% recycled materials, it only requires one 1.5V battery (which is included) to get it kicking.Vitra Nelson Sunburst ClockDesigned by George Nelson in 1949, this decorative wall clock is made of lacquered wood and metal, and is available in a range of colors. It measures 13 inches in diameter and will automatically introduce a burst of personality to any space.YAMAZAKI Wood Wall ClockAnother one of our favorite modern wall clocks is this Japanese design that employs ash wood with graphic brushstrokes of black or white for contrast. All it needs is a single battery to get it going, though it nixes numbers for accent lines.

  • The Proud Boys and militias come to Teslas defense
    www.wired.com
Over the weekend, thousands of people joined the Tesla Takedown protest movement at the companys showrooms across the country. At the same time, a much smaller number of Elon Musk supporters turned out at Tesla locations for a counterprotest movement that some participants dubbed Tesla Shield. While the protest movement comprises people angered at Elon Musks role in the dismantling of federal government agencies, the counterprotest movement that showed up this weekend was peopled mostly by MAGA supporters. Among them were an array of far-right extremists, including members of the Proud Boys, armed militias, and at one event in Idaho, a guy dressed as Hitler. As Musks so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) rips through huge swaths of the federal government and puts peoples lives and livelihoods at risk, the Tesla protest movement has gained traction. Teslas stock price has dropped by more than 30 percent since the beginning of the year. Isolated incidents of vandalism against Tesla vehicles and chargers as well as dealerships have led Trump to push the Department of Justice to treat alleged violent protesters as domestic terrorists, and now some extremist groups have taken it upon themselves to help Musk fight back.My people will be free, my people will rule again, David Pettinger, a member of the extremist anti-government Peoples Rights group, shouted at protesters in a fake German accent outside a Tesla dealership in Meridian, Idaho, on Saturday, according to video footage of the incident.A moustachioed Pettinger wore a T-shirt with the words LITERALLY HITLER written on the back and a picture of Musk giving a nazi-like salute on the front. Wearing jodhpurs and black boots, Pettinger marched in front of protesters and handed out heart-shaped stickers to Musk supporters.Pettinger told WIRED that he dressed as Hitler to make fun of the overuse of the terms nazi and fascist. However, Pettingers posts on X echo Hitlers deeply antisemitic worldview. Also in Meridian were a number of armed individuals in camouflage gear, some wearing body armor, according to images of the counterprotest posted to Bluesky. Pettinger also appeared to be armed, according to video footage showing a handgun tucked into his jodhpurs.Meanwhile, Josh Fulfer, who is known online as Oreo Express and was at the US Capitol in Washington on January 6, joined a counterprotest group in Fresno, California, telling a local news outlet: Were out here to show support for DOGE, Elon Musk, Tesla, and this administration. Fulfer can be seen on his own videos harassing and shouting at protesters.Ahead of the Tesla Takedown protests this weekend, the Proud Boys and other far-right groups put out calls on their social media channels for supporters to show up in numbers and counter the protests.A virtually all of the dealerships which had protests this weekend, however, the number of anti-Musk protesters vastly outnumbered the pro-Musk protesters.

  • Top 1,000 IT service providers in scope of UK cyber bill
    www.computerweekly.com
The government has set out a series of ambitions and goals for the soon-to-be-introduced Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, including measures to better protect supply chain and operators of critical national services, which besides public services and utilities will now also includes IT service providers and suppliers up to 1,000 of which are likely to fall into the scope of the planned measures and potentially datacentre operators.First trailed in 2024 shortly after Labours General Election victory, the overall aims of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill are to improve the UKs online defences, protect the public and safeguard growth in line with its wider Plan for Change Policy. The government said its plans would help ensure organisations that provide essential services IT and otherwise across both the public and private sectors are a less tempting target for cyber criminals. It also wants to give the country greater confidence in digital services, which it is relying upon to support its overall economic growth mission.Noting that cyber threats cost the UK over 22bn during the second half of the 2010s, it cited last summers attack on Synnovis that cost the NHS over 32m and suggested that a hypothetical cyber attack focused on energy services in southeast England could wipe over 49bn off the economy.Economic growth is the cornerstone of our Plan for Change, and ensuring the security of the vital services which will deliver that growth is non-negotiable, said Peter Kyle, secretary of state for science, innovation and technology.Attempts to disrupt our way of life and attack our digital economy are only gathering pace, and we will not stand by as these incidents hold our future prosperity hostage. The Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, will help make the UKs digital economy one of the most secure in the world giving us the power to protect our services, our supply chains, and our citizens the first and most important job of any government.Richard Horne, CEO of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), added: The Cyber Security and Resilience Bill is a landmark moment that will ensure we can improve the cyber defences of the critical services on which we rely every day, such as water, power and healthcare. It is a pivotal step toward stronger, more dynamic regulation, one that not only keeps up with emerging threats but also makes it as challenging as possible for our adversaries.By bolstering their cyber defences and engaging with the NCSCs guidance and tools, such as Cyber Assessment Framework, Cyber Essentials and Active Cyber Defence, organisations of all sizes will be better prepared to meet the increasingly sophisticated challenges, he said.As part of the bills progress, the government said it is now exploring measures to take to improve its ability to respond to emerging cyber threats and, critically, to take rapid action to protect national security. This could see the technology secretary granted powers to order regulated organisations to shore up their cyber defences. Also on the table is the possibility of introducing a set of new protections for the UKs 200 largest datacentres. Quite what these measures will entail is yet to be decided, but the government noted that it may look to artificial intelligence (AI) to help bolster the defences of the countrys datacentre estate.Should the proposed bill make it to the statute books, its overall provisions will be largely similar to those already been set out in previous announcements.Besides proposals to mandate ransomware incident reporting that have already been widely discussed and are currently the subject of an ongoing consultation, and widening the variety of organisations subject to cyber regulation, it will also give regulators more tools to improve cyber security and resilience in their specialist areas, and give the government more flexibility to update regulatory frameworks as and when the threat and technology environments evolve.Read more about security legislation and regulationRegulator Ofcom is now able to take enforcement action against platforms under the Online Safety Act if they fail to proactively safeguard against content such as terrorist or child sexual abuse material. The Commons Public Accounts Committee heard government IT leaders respond to recent National Audit Office findings that the governments cyber resilience is under par. With a flourishing technology sector and a direct line to Brussels, investing in Ireland may be a sound bet for UK organisations looking to navigate Europe's transforming cyber landscape.

  • Facebooks Newest Feature Might Make Me Want To Use It Again
    www.forbes.com
Facebook is going old school with its latest update: a Friends tab that only shows updates from ... More actual friends.gettyFour days ago Facebook introduced a brand new feature thats actually kind of old: the Friends tab. Its a tab that wait for it only shows updates from your actual Facebook friends. If you thought that was kind of the idea of a social network, youve likely been dissatisfied with your social media options lately. As Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg referenced when he announced the new feature on his personal Facebook account, its OG Facebook: social media like it was back in 2006. Ive been playing around with it for a while, and it just might make me want to use Facebook again. And apparently, theres more where that update came from. The new Friends tab is a throwback to OG Facebook when you only saw friends status updates, Zuckerberg says. More OG Facebook coming soon.Like many in my friend group, Ive been increasingly disenchanted with a social network that seemed to show nothing from my actual friends. As I scroll the default tab of Facebook right now, the third item is People You Might Know. The very next one is a post by a politician I do not follow: essentially a free ad. The very next item is an actual ad for a flight club, followed by two updates from friends, yet another ad (this time for a car), a friends post, and then some influencers post with video of the US president talking about Ukraine and the rare earth deal. Scrolling farther, I see updates from groups I do not follow (hello, The Onion and The Liberal Agenda, plus Meanwhile in Canada and The Guardians of Democracy, among others) more ads, posts from news organizations I do not follow, and yes, a few lonely friend updates mixed into the mess.In other words, the social network that I use to stay connected with friends has perhaps 30% friend content at most on the default feed. Thats abysmal, if youre looking to use a social network as a social network. The new Facebook Friends tab, which only shows content from people you've chosen as friends on the ... More platform.John KoetsierThe new Friends tab is the second from the left at bottom, and it changes all of this. At least 90% of the content in the Friends tab is actual, real, true friend updates, interspersed with the occasional bit on friend requests and people you may know.Facebook is still kind of trying to trick you, however. As usual, when Meta releases a new product, the ads dont surface until much later. (Think Threads, where Im still not seeing ads.) The new Friends tab doesnt have a lot of ads yet. In fact, I still havent seen an ad on the Friends tab, which makes the experience amazing, in fact. But that will not last, of course. The first hit is free, as per usual, and after the honeymoon period, ads will intrude into the Friends tab too. However, its still going to be a better experience than all the unwanted groups, public figures, and influencers intruding into the main Facebook tab.Its clear why Facebook did what it did to the main tab. Political discourse and curated most-engaging content that makes it out of the Darwinian struggle to be seen on the multi-billion-personal social network is probably more likely to grab the average persons attention over Uncle Bob showing off his new lawnmower. Getting more users, getting them to spend more time in the app, and showing them more ads is how Facebook makes more money. The problem is that those of us who dont go to Facebook to see the latest political news from your friendly neighborhood outrage factory, or what Random Nature Group 3 just posted, would rather just see what our actual friends and relatives are up to. After all, thats arguably the primary purpose of a social network: not the news, not the blather, not the noise.Judging by the reactions to Zuckerbergs post, many agree.I just cant wait for this OG comeback, says Aku Sunshine. "Its been long overdue."By OG you mean how it should be, says Rich Steele.Thats a great throwback! says Leona Scott.98% of my newsfeed is just ads and influencers I dont follow and dont care about, says Jenny Lynn, highlighting the need for the new Friends tab. If I want to see friends posts I have to navigate to their pages individually. Facebook has become too time consuming and exhausting. No wonder so many people are leaving the platform.Im sure the very reason Zuckerberg and company released the new Friends tab is that they saw people spending less time on the platform as well as using the Friends-only view that you could previously get on the desktop web version of Facebook. And that their hope is to keep those of us who liked the old version of Facebook better on the platform, one way or another.

  • Deleting Your 23andMe Account? Some Data Could Still Be Sold
    www.forbes.com
Cleaning status bar. getty23andMes bankruptcy announcement on March 23rd triggered urgent calls for customers to delete genetic information and other personally identifiable information from their accounts. California AG Bonta issued a press release on March 21st with the heading, Californians have the right to direct the company to delete their genetic data - a full two days prior. The press release provided detailed, step-by-step instructions for deleting genetic data and test samples, and revoking permission for genetic data to be used for research.Following these steps is helpful. But it wont guarantee a full purge of genetic information from 23andMes systems. The companys privacy notice says it retains some genetic information to comply with legal obligations and standards. 23andMe may also hold PII and genetic information of people who do not have accounts and cannot avail themselves of AG Bontas detailed instructions. My husband and I arent on it, but my mother is, a full sister is, a half-paternal sister, and a son and daughter, plus one of my nieces. Plus some other relatives on my mothers side, says Deb Nam-Krane, an Indie Novelist and Climate Organizer based in the US. So the company could probably build a pretty good profile for me.Even if you dont have an account, or if you follow AG Bontas advice and delete your account, some of your genetic data may soon be sold to an unknown buyer.Whats All The Fuss? The prospect of highly sensitive genetic, ancestry and account information being sold to an unknown buyer who may use it in ways customers had not anticipated causes anxiety for some. Contact information can go stale over time: you can always change your password, your email, your phone number, or even your address," writes Keith Porcaro in the MIT Technology Review. "But a bad actor who has your genetic datawhether a cybercriminal selling it to the highest bidder, a company building a profile of your future health risk, or a government trying to identify youwill have it tomorrow and the next day and all the days after that. Charles Outhier, a security professional based in the US, wonders whether a data broker could purchase the data and market it to insurance companies. He avoids these types of services due to privacy concerns, but hes not sure about blood relatives.Security concerns are also top of mind. 23andMe had already seen a drop in subscriptions after its October 2023 data breach. The hypothetical buyers security capabilities are unknown. Could there be another, more damaging breach?I asked 23andMe if a foreign buyer could bid on the sale, potentially raising both national security and personal security risks. Bidders will have access to a data room to do their due diligence before they state their price. Even if their bid isnt successful, this access could impact privacy if they are able to review customer data. 23andMe did not rule out the possibility of a foreign buyer, but explained the sale would be subject to applicable regulatory approvals, including a review by the US Committee on Foreign Investment.Bidens Executive Order 14117 titled, Preventing Access to Americans Bulk Sensitive Personal Data and United States Government-Related Data by Countries of Concern ordered the AG, Department of Homeland Security and other key officials to prevent the sale or transfer of bulk sensitive data to adversarial countries. It is unclear whether the current administration would consider itself bound by a Biden-era EO. Moreover, Signalgate has revealed Trumps top brass do not routinely adhere to government security measures and may not appreciate the risks. The court could appoint a Consumer Privacy Ombudsman to ensure privacy concerns are addressed in the bankruptcy proceedings. 23andMe has opposed a CPO appointment. The judge has not yet ruled on that issue, but the bankruptcy proceedings are moving forward. I wrote about this in detail here.Deleting DNA Samples And Genetic Data Isnt Easy. Its Even Harder To Do At Speed And Scale.23andMes IT systems saw a surge in traffic as people scrambled to delete their data, causing technical issues that frustrated their efforts, according to a March 26 BBC News report. The bankruptcy proceedings are on a tight schedule, and time is running out before the sale. 23andMe says fulfilling deletion requests takes 30 days. The deadline for bids is May 7th. The auction is May 14th. The hearing is set for June 17th.A sophisticated [privacy] program should have considered and had in place a mechanism to allow en masse deletion says Samantha Simms, a Digital Attorney, Strategist and Data Protection Officer Coach based in the Caribbean. They should have been prescient enough to design the privacy program to allow for this type of risk.I spoke with Dr. Krystal Tsosie, an Indigenous Geneticist-Bioethicist and Assistant Professor at Arizona State University, about the practical challenges of processing deletion requests. Does 23andMe have a mapping of you to that [saliva] specimen? Are there harmonized processes to ensure original consent is respected? How do you recall a sample and data shared with 200+ research groups? Shes not convinced that a deletion request would be completely fulfilled.23andMe May Not Delete All Your DataEven when IT systems and deletion procedures run smoothly, legal loopholes may prevent your data from being fully deleted. Privacy lawyer and self-described Privacy Cassandra Carey Lening described her failed efforts to delete her data after learning of 23andMes financial woes in her Privacy Disasters blog. Lening, who is based in Ireland, compared the privacy notices from 2013, when she had provided her data, and 2019, when she had made her erasure request. What she found alarmed her. 23andMe had added a section explaining that it or its contracted laboratory would retain some genetic information to comply with standards such as the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA), which sets minimum retention periods for clinical and diagnostic labs, not direct-to-consumer genetic testing labs. Lening wrote to 23andMe searching for answers and a way to have that data deleted under the EUs GDPR."For what its worth, 23andMe never provided any details on whether or not they had copies of my data, whether their laboratory maintained my samples or DNA records, or which laboratory processed that data. This may matter as part of any sale of 23andMes assets."The March 14, 2025 privacy notice retains that caveat. It states23andMe and/or our contracted genotyping laboratory will retain your Genetic Information, date of birth, and sex as required for compliance with applicable legal obligations, including the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA), California Business and Professions Code Section 1265 and College of American Pathologists (CAP) accreditation requirements, even if you chose to delete your account. 23andMe will also retain limited information related to your account and data deletion request, including but not limited to, your email address, account deletion request identifier, communications related to inquiries or complaints and legal agreements for a limited period of time as required by law, contractual obligations, and/or as necessary for the establishment, exercise or defense of legal claims and for audit and compliance purposes. [Emphasis added].23andMe explained to me via email that they retain archival files to satisfy laws and standards such as CLIA, and that they securely store de-identified Genetic Information with a randomized identifier, but destroy the sample. It is important to understand that the retained information is distinct from the genotyped data available within your account and is stripped from registration information. This data has not been processed by our interpretation software to produce your individual-level genotyped data (in your account).DNA Is Never Really AnonymousDr. Tsosie emphasized that de-identified data is treated differently from PII that is directly identifiable in research and consumer genetic testing contexts. They have structured rules that disarticulate human consent and once data has become de-identified it no longer requires further consent. This is insidious because youre losing autonomy and agency over what happens to your data to satisfy the sharing terms globally of your data. Its not protected under HIPAA, and because it appears less risky, it may give people a false sense of security.Truly anonymizing DNA is not really possible says Simms. Both individual-level de-identified data and aggregated data can be linked back to identifiable individuals or communities if measures to prevent re-identification arent in place. Researchers were sounding the alarm about this in the 2010s when our digital technology was less advanced and there were fewer digital traces to enrich the datasets. With generative AI drawing inferences and observing patterns is trivial. The mosaic effect that arises with the staggering volume of data points circulating online further aggravates the risk.Dr. Tsosie told me that community privacy risks are a big concern for tribal communities. Because they tend to be smaller, distinct, and underrepresented in the data, it is easier to see patterns that appear to map genetic data to specific tribes. Indigeneity and tribal affiliation are not defined by DNA. Tribes have their own methods for determining tribal membership, as Tsosie explained in her Ted Talk, Our DNA Is Not Our Identity. But the customer who has no relationship with a particular tribe but then believes they may have some Cherokee ancestry may assume DNA results entitle them speak on behalf of those communities or benefit from special programs without ever having participated in community life.Community privacy and individual privacy may intersect where de-identified data shows traits associated with a distinct population, such as a rare disease biomarker. Add to that distinguishing features, such as above-average age or height, that person can be singled out from within their community. If This Is So Risky, How Is It Legal? The law often lags behind technology and public sentiment. This gives rise to the lawful but awful phenomenon. Porcaro offers a scathing rebuke: All this is possible because American lawmakers have neglected to meaningfully engage with digital privacy for nearly a quarter-century. As a result, services are incentivized to make flimsy, deceptive promises that can be abandoned at a moments notice. And the burden falls on users to keep track of it all, or just give up. To fix this, he proposes the sale be subject to individual opt-ins, rather than an opt-out model. But laws are a floor, not a ceiling. If we are relying on law when it comes to data, weve missed a step. We need to be thinking of this in terms of ethics. In terms of what is right for society," says Simms. Its about data ethics. At what point is it okay for a CEO to make a bid for a company whose data they failed to protect in the first place? While consumers wait for lawmakers to catch up, they may want to think twice about sharing their most intimate data with companies that are incentivized to treat the data as mere assets to be sold to the highest bidder.
