  • Loci Anima gives a new soul to 1985s hemispherical cinema with dichroic faade in Paris

Submitted by WA ContentsLoci Anima gives a new soul to 1985s hemispherical cinema with dichroic faade in Paris France Architecture News - Apr 01, 2025 - 04:19 html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"Paris and New York-based architecture firm Loci Anima has completed the renovation of 1985s hemispherical cinema with dichroic faade in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, within Parc de la Villette, France. In December 2024, the architectural firm Loci Anima, led by Franoise Raynaud, completed the renovation of La Gode and its hemispherical cinema (originally designed by Adrien Fainsilber) for Universcience (the owner) and Path Cinmas (the concessionaire). The IMAX screen already provided an immersive experience, but now the entire cinema has been transformed into a fully immersive environment. Before they even step inside, the two-toned faade beckons guests into a world of illusion, where sunlight appears to cascade through a coffered ceiling.Image courtesy of Loci AnimaThis faade reflects the aesthetics of modern stained glass, engaging with light and reflections. Its unrefined, geometric design conjures a monolithic stained-glass effect, where transparency and color merge effortlessly with architectural precisionan homage to the cinema itself. The renovation was designed by Loci Anima as a multisensory experience that engages both sight and taste. Beyond the confectionery area, architecture and illusion intertwine to immerse visitors in a delectable dreamlike realm, guiding them into a spacious circular environment filled with light and shadows.La Gode, which was opened by Adrien Fainsilber in 1985 and is a wonder of architecture and technology, has an interior that showcases a concrete structure shaped like an upside-down mushroom. This is propped up by a central column with an area of only 4 square meters. The inclusion of a platform for the IMAX projector and another to fill the hall's pit had to adhere to this fragile structural equilibrium, which appears to challenge gravity. The addition of Loci anima has amplified the display of this brutalist work of art in a spiritual sense, a concrete cathedral by removing all traditional elements of cinema.. Actually, the show has already started.Image courtesy of Loci AnimaVisitors are invited to explore the area by means of a 360 projected image on the walls, which again emphasizes the architectural heritage through illumination. Two panoramic lifts and an 11-meter floating staircase traverse the building, connecting the hall to the auditorium entrance. A foyer provides visitors the opportunity to examine the spherical structure at close range. This is not for the faint-hearted.The auditorium now features a new hemispherical screen measuring 1,000 square meters, tailored for a new 4K laser projector and paired with an IMAX 6.0 sound system. The seating capacity has been decreased from 400 to 286 specially designed seats, which provide six different reclining angles for improved spectator comfort. However, before the screening even begins, visitors embark on a virtual discovery of Parc de La Villette, as the geodesic dome itself becomes a window to the outside worldone last illusion to enrich the journey.Image courtesy of Loci AnimaThe interior refurbishment of La Gode establishes a flawless union between structural materials and virtual imagery, incorporating video mapping and spatialized sound, all the way to the return to reality.Image courtesy of Loci AnimaImage Pierre-Louis MabireFloor planFloor planFloor planFloor planFloor planFloor planSectionDemolition sectionStructural plans, floors createdLoci Anima, founded by Franoise Raynaud in 2005, is a studio specializing in architecture, design, and urban planning. • Rumour: More Switch 2 Development Kit Rumours Emerge
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: NintendoNintendo's Switch 2 broadcast takes place this week and multiple rumours and reports about the system's development kits have emerged ahead of the anticipated launch.According to Digital Foundry's John Linneman, he's heard "many developers" are still without a kit - especially "medium to small developers" and Nintendo is apparently being "very selective" about who has access to the new hardware."I think there will be third-party games early on of course, it just seems like a lot of medium to small developers still do not have access to development hardware."Games media veteran Imran Khan has also chimed in via ResetEra claiming Embracer Group didn't receive any kits from Nintendo because the Japanese video game giant "deemed them too chaotic at the moment"."They [Nintendo] were afraid the kits would go to studios that would then be closed down and then the kits might have gone missing."Khan says Ubisoft already has kits - with this same company previously publicising its support of the new Nintendo hardware and a rumour earlier this year suggesting it had "more than half a dozen" games planned for the Switch 2.These updates follow a story from Insider Gaming's reporter Tom Henderson last week, who mentioned how "many" third-party studios wouldn't be getting their hands on Switch 2 developer kits until June as part of a 3-phase launch plan. The second phase of the Switch 2 rollout will reportedly see games from third-party studios arrive between October and November."The second-stage will arrive in October-November for third-party studios, many of whom are expecting the dev kits for the Switch 2 to be sent in June."Adding to this, a new story from Insider Gaming this week shares another comment from Henderson about Switch 2 development kits.According to what he heard at this year's Game Developers Conference from "one developer" - at least "some of the dev kits" do not have 4K output. He's also received a separate email about this."I heard this from one developer at GDC and also heard it separately in an email but the dev kits, or some of the dev kits, dont have a 4K outputExisting rumours and supposed leaks have suggested the Switch 2 will be capable of "4K upscaling" and certain Nintendo patents seemingly connected to this have also surfaced online. As mentioned by the same outlet, development kits don't necessarily reflect or "match the specs" of the final product. • Sharktopus Encounter: No, Its Not An April Fools Joke.
    www.forbes.com
An octopus rides atop a shortfin mako shark in December 2023. YouTube/University of AucklandOne of the best things about being a marine scientist is that you never know what you might see next in the sea. That was certainly the case for marine biologist Professor Rochelle Constantine and her colleagues at the University of Auckland, who did not expect to find an octopus riding a shark. But thats exactly what they witnessed in December 2023 while surveying the waters of the Hauraki Gulf near Kawau Island, off the northern coast of New Zealands North Island. The Hauraki Gulf is a vast and ecologically rich body of water that stretches from Auckland to the Coromandel Peninsula and Great Barrier Island. The gulfs dynamic environment includes deep channels, sandy bays, and rocky reefs, making it an important habitat for both coastal and pelagic species. It is also a significant area for conservation efforts, as human activity, climate change, and overfishing have impacted its ecosystems.A large metallic grey dorsal fin signalled a big shark, a short-fin mako. But wait, what was that orange patch on its head? A buoy? An injury?" Constantine recalls. "We launched the drone, put the GoPro in the water and saw something unforgettable: an octopus perched atop the sharks head, clinging on with its tentacles. It was a startling discovery. Afterall, shortfin mako sharks, the fastest sharks in the world, can reach speeds of up to over 31 mph (50 kph). They typically hunt fast-moving fish like tuna and mackerel near the oceans surface, while octopuses tend to stick to the seafloor, preferring rocky reefs and hiding spots. The two species dont often cross paths, making this well, encounter, especially unusual. We really dont know how this octopus, that lives on the seabed, came across this [10-foot-long] mako shark that lives in pelagic open ocean waters, Constantine told Live Science. It really is a mystery but the ocean is filled with unexpected things. An underwater camera confirmed the enormous Mori octopus (Octopus maorum) was alive and actively moving. The scientists observed the sharktopus the unofficial nickname for the peculiar duo for 10 minutes. To their surprise, the mako showed no signs of stress. Normally, a shark with something foreign on its body would react aggressively, twisting and shaking to remove it. But this shark swam along calmly, seemingly unbothered. We moved on after 10 minutes so I cant tell you how what happened next. The octopus may have been in for quite the experience, Constantine said. The Mori octopus (Octopus maorum) is one of the largest octopus species found in the waters around ... More New Zealand and southern Australia.Matt Testoni PhotographyThe Mori octopus is one of the largest octopus species found in the waters around New Zealand and southern Australia. Weighing up to 26 pounds (12 kg) and with an arm span reaching nearly 10 feet (3 m), this formidable cephalopod is known for its intelligence, adaptability, and ability to change color and texture to blend into its surroundings. It primarily inhabits coastal and deep-sea environments, preferring rocky reefs and sandy seafloors where it can hunt crabs, fish, and other small marine creatures. Like other octopuses, it has a short lifespan typically only a couple of years and reproduces only once before dying. Its nocturnal nature and remarkable camouflage abilities make it a challenging species to study, adding to the intrigue surrounding this fascinating predator. What exactly led to this encounter remains an open question. Constantine speculated that the octopus might have been using the shark as a temporary refuge, perhaps to escape a predator or avoid detection. Octopuses are known for their intelligence and problem-solving abilities, so its not impossible that this one saw an opportunity and took it. Another theory is that the mako may have ventured unusually close to the seafloor, where the octopus could have mistaken it for a rock or another surface to hide on. The sharks slow movement may have allowed the octopus to stay latched on, but if the mako had picked up speed, the octopus likely would have been forced off. And if that happened, the shark, which preys on squid and other cephalopods, might have taken the opportunity to make a meal out of its unexpected passenger. While rare, cephalopods interacting with sharks isnt unheard of. In some cases, octopuses have been observed defending themselves from sharks by wrapping their arms around the predators head, sometimes even suffocating smaller sharks. But this brief partnership remained peaceful, at least for the duration of the scientists observations.Shortfin makos are formidable predators, but theyre also highly threatened. Listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, these sharks face significant pressure from commercial fishing, particularly due to bycatch and demand for their meat and fins. Despite their speed and hunting prowess, they are vulnerable to human activity, with populations in decline due to overfishing. Constantine hopes that encounters like this one highlight the importance of conserving marine species, not just for their ecological roles but for the incredible, unpredictable behaviors they exhibit in the wild: By supporting conservation initiatives, we can help to ensure that such extraordinary moments keep happening. The shark and octopus eventually parted ways, with the cephalopod likely dropping off into the depths and the mako continuing on its course. The sighting left the researchers with more questions than answers but thats the beauty of studying the ocean. It is vast, mysterious, and full of surprises.

  • Intel shows off in-game AI assistant running on Core Ultra 200HX
    www.techspot.com
Something to look forward to: Microsoft, Nvidia, and now Intel are working to turn gaming assistants into a new selling point for generative AI. While Nvidia argues that its GPUs are the best tools for local AI workloads, Windows and Intel have tried to demonstrate the benefits of using NPUs to offload tasks from graphics chips during gameplay. However, none of the proposed assistants has undergone extensive real-world testing. Intel recently showcased how running generative AI programs on its new NPUs might benefit gamers. Although several companies have promoted the gaming-related potential of NPUs, these benefits remain largely unproven. In Intel's demonstration, a generative AI model likely a generic third-party assistant provided gameplay advice during a session of Black Myth: Wukong, running on an unspecified Arrow Lake Core Ultra 200HX processor, presumably in a gaming laptop. The assistant responded to a spoken question using real-time voice integration and retrieved an online video showing how to defeat a boss.It remains unclear whether the demonstration featured real gameplay or simply concept footage. Microsoft previously used concept reels to present its upcoming Copilot gaming AI coach, which is intended to provide real-time tips in games like Minecraft and Overwatch while running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon X chip. No real footage exists yet, but Xbox Insiders can begin testing the feature on mobile devices next month. Also read: NPU vs. GPU: What's the Difference?Intel's presentation also highlighted potential performance gains from running AI models on NPUs. Activating the assistant boosted Wukong's framerate from 103 to 108 FPS, while running the same model on the GPU caused a drop to 94 FPS.Nvidia's gaming assistant, which runs on GPUs with at least 12GB of VRAM, is available in the latest version of the company's desktop app. However, rather than offering gameplay guidance, it focuses on performance optimization.Arrow Lake is an interesting choice for Intel's demonstration, given that the Core Ultra 200HX and desktop 200K processors achieve only 13 TOPS (trillions of operations per second) of AI performance. // Related StoriesIf gaming AI assistants perform as promised, they should theoretically run much better on newer notebook and handheld platforms like Intel's upcoming Lunar Lake Core Ultra 200V or AMD's Strix Point Ryzen AI 300, which can reach up to 50 TOPS. Benchmarking an assistant on laptops or newer handheld gaming PCs equipped with those chips could yield interesting results.

  • Screen usage in bed raises insomnia risks worse than you know
    www.digitaltrends.com
We have slowly grown accustomed to staring at screens in our bed, despite being well aware of the physical and mental harms. A study published earlier this month detailed a 33% higher prevalence of poor sleep quality for people who use electronic devices at bedtime. Now, another research notes that by viewing a screen in bed, the risks of insomnia go up by a stunning 59% in young people and adolescents. Moreover, it also eats up into our sleep time by 24 minutes. While that is worrying in itself, each hourly increase in screen activity raises the insomnia risks even further.Recommended VideosThe results showed that increased screen time in bed correlates with a higher likelihood of reporting symptoms of insomnia and shorter sleep duration, whereby each additional hour of screen time was linked to a 63% increase in insomnia risk and 24 minutes less sleep, says the research paper published in the Frontiers Psychiatry journal. RelatedThe research focused on over 45,000 students in Norway, studying how their screen usage in bed affected their sleep activities. Aside from sleep and wake-up times, participants also shared details about how long it typically took them to fall asleep, sleep difficulties, daytime sleepiness, and the persistence of their sleep issues.SHVETS production / PexelsAll these details were used to create an insomnia profile. Insomnia is medically defined as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, or regularly waking up. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 12% of US residents suffer from chronic insomnia, while nearly a third of the population shows brief symptoms.Social media often gets the flak for keeping us hooked to screens, serving us an endless barrage of algorithmically-tuned content, and deservedly so. The result is a cycle of doom-scrolling that often eats up hours without us even realizing the wasted time. Then theres the health of social media content itself, especially its worrying impact on children.Nadeem Sarwar / Digital TrendsAccording to the experts, there is no direct relationship between social media and how it affects our sleep. As per the data evaluated by the experts, social media is no more worse than any other screen-based activity, which could be gaming, streaming, web browsing, or any other digital recreation, for that matter.Irrespective of screen time, those only using social media had the lowest proportion reporting symptoms of insomnia and the longest sleep duration, while those who only engaged in other screen activities had the worst sleep, says the research paper. It is, however, a reality that social media apps are also responsible for the highest number of alerts on smartphones. While they may not directly pull you into spending a few hours watching an endless stream of content, the notifications definitely disturb your sleep or serve as a mental distraction.Editors Recommendations

  • Microsoft finally adds missing Copilot+ AI tools to Intel and AMD PCs
    www.digitaltrends.com
If you bought into the promise of a new AI-charged Copilot+ PC with the latest-gen Intel or AMD processor, and found a few tricks missing, the long wait is over. A handful of those Copilot+ features are finally expanding beyond machines with a Snapdragon X series processor inside. Its roughly been a year since Microsoft introduced the Copilot+ PC label, a new breed of computing machines that put AI performance at the forefront. For months, Qualcomm was the sole silicon supplier for such machines.Recommended VideosLate in 2024, rival chipmakers finally got their piece of the Copilot pie with the launch of AMD Ryzen AI 300 series and Intel Core Ultra 200V series processors. That, however, wasnt enough, as a healthy bunch of those features werent accessible on Intel and AMD machines. That finally changes starting today. Microsoft says Copilot tools such as Live Captions, Cocreator, Restyle Image, and Image Creator are expanding across Copilot+ hardware with an Intel and AMD processor inside.Image used with permission by copyright holderStarting with Live Caption, this feature enables captions for videos, audio, and real-time interactions such as meetings in English. It can also translate text from more than 40 languages into English, and 27 languages in Chinese.Down the road, a new feature called Voice Access will allow users to control their PC using natural language commands. It is now rolling out to Copilot+ devices with a Qualcomm chip, but support for AMD and Intel hardware is on the horizon, too.On the creative side of things, the AI-enabled Cocreator feature is now accessible in Paint irrespective of the silicon inside your PC. Microsoft says it can be used to make artistic creation and image refinement more intuitive and approachable. Users can combine text-based editing with hand-drawn input, which is a neat flexibility.Image used with permission by copyright holderIn the Photos app, Intel and AMD machines also get access to the Restyle Image and Image Creator tools. The latter allows you to create images based on text prompts, just the way you engage with ChatGPT to make Ghibli-inspired art. The Restyle tool, on the other hand, takes a preset-like approach for adding artistic effect to images. All the aforementioned AI experiences are reaching AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs with the March 2025 Windows update. Its rather interesting why these features werent available on Intel and AMD machines in the first place, despite meeting the minimum AI performance quota. The poor streak isnt ending anytime soon, though. A few days ago, Microsoft announced an upgrade to the Windows Search experience that will make it a lot more convenient to find files, photos, and settings tools. Unfortunately, it will be restricted to Snapdragon-based Copilot+ machines. Editors Recommendations
