However, they're not perfect. They lack multipoint connectivity, which other high-end earbuds at this price point offer, and there is no wireless charging for the case (if you care about that). The features are what sets these earbuds apart. They have a CustomTune feature that measures your ear's canal's shape to tune the sound and establishes your best ANC profile. You can adapt changes in the companion app as well. Bose calls its spatial audio feature "Immersive Audio," which is a feature that mimics hearing your surroundings similarly to what it would feel to wear open-ear headphones. You can also mess around with the settings to mix and match outside noise and ANC within the Immersive Audio setting on the app. You'll get about four to six hours of battery life and another 12 to 18 with the battery case. The earbuds aren't waterproof, but they are water resistant with an IPX4 rating, so you can wear them in the gym.

  • Google Will Reduce Battery Capacity for the Pixel 9a, and Theres Nothing You Can Do About It
    lifehacker.com
Google is planning a new update for its upcoming Pixel 9a which includes a new feature dedicated to protecting and prolonging the phone's battery. While the goal is longevity, this new battery management feature will actually end up reducing the battery capacity of the Pixel 9a over time. It won't just be the Pixel 9a, as other Pixel series phones will eventually receive the feature too. The kicker, though, is Pixel 9a users can't turn this feature off.Why do Lithium-ion batteries need management? All lithium-ion batteries degrade over time. As you use your smartphone, and as you continue to charge it, the total battery capacity goes down. Eventually, charging your phone to 100% doesn't last as long as it used to: maybe 100% battery today really gets you 80% of the battery capacity of the battery when it was new.Manufacturers have introduced workarounds that help prolong the inevitable, by limiting how much you actually charge the battery. Apple has an iPhone feature that lets users limit the battery charging between 80% and 95%. There are apps that do this for the Mac as well. These measures do go a long way in prolonging the battery of a device. In the short term, you might not notice any difference, but these changes can lead to batteries lasting for months or years longer than they used to. Now that Google is supporting Pixel devices with seven years of software updates, it's in the company's interest to ensure its devices' batteries are performing at a level that can support the new software and features that will be added in the years to come. How Google's Battery Health Assistance worksAs first reported by 9to5Google, Google is adding a new "Battery Health Assistance" feature to Pixel phones, starting with the Pixel 9a. Google is taking quite a different path than Apple here: Instead of providing an option to limit battery charging overnight, or to a particular percentage, Google will start to reduce the battery's maximum voltage after the Pixel 9a crosses 200 charge cycles.A charging cycle doesn't mean a single charging session. It means charging your phone from zero to 100%, even if that happens in breaks, over multiple days. If your phone drops from 100% to 60%, then you charge it to 100% again, that's 40% of a full charge cycle. If you then let it fall to 40%, and charge it back up to 100%, that's 60% of cyclecombined, that's one full cycle. So, once the system clocks 200 of those cycles, Battery Health Assistance kicks in. Google will do this automatically and in the background, hopefully without being too intrusive. Google says that users may notice small decreases in the battery's runtime as the battery ages, andwill continue to reduce voltage for up to 1,000 charging cycles. Once this feature rolls out to existing Pixel devices, you will be able to turn it off if you preferwith one exception.Mandatory Battery Health AssistanceAs I mentioned above, the Pixel 9a is currently the only Google smartphone that won't have an off switch for Battery Health Assistance. While this is a good feature, and it will prolong the battery life of the smartphone, not having the option to turn it off, and thus having no choice in whether to use the full charging capacity of the phone, is a bummer. Since the Pixel 9a has the biggest battery ever in a Pixel phone (5,100 mAh), your phone's battery should be in good shape for a while. But the fact that Google is forcing this feature onto its users, and not presenting it as a choice, will likely rub Pixel 9a users the wrong wayespecially since other Pixel users will have a choice in the matter. At the time of writing I don't know how this feature will work, how it will be turned off, but I suspect that will go hand in hand with the upcoming Android 16's new Battery Health section that lets users limit charging capacity to 80%, shows battery cycle count, among other battery related data. This, along with the fact that the Pixel 9a will miss out on the top-tier AI features, differentiates it from the Pixel 9 (which can be found as low as $600 on sale). Perhaps the latter is the phone to go with for users who want as much control over their device as possible.

  • NVIDIA confirms the Switch 2 has DLSS
    www.engadget.com
This week's Nintendo Direct provided much more info about the Switch 2 but didn't go too deep into the nitty-gritty details of what powers the console. That left NVIDIA, the Mario maker's hardware partner on the console's processor and GPU, to fill in some blanks with a blog post published on Thursday including the first confirmation that it uses Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) tech.NVIDIA said the Switch 2's DLSS support helps to give the console "ten times" the graphical performance of the original Switch. The tech lets games render games in a lower resolution, then uses trained AI models and dedicated Tensor Cores to fill in detail.Saying a system has ten times the graphics performance is likely a simplified marketing claim, and its graphical prowess could vary greatly depending on the title. The console has also yet to be scrutinized with extended real-world use. However, in Engadget's Sam Rutherford hands-on, he found that the system handled the new Switch 2 versions of Street Fighter 6, Cyberpunk 2077 and Civilization 7 well, with all running "really smooth."Sam Rutherford for EngadgetIn docked mode, the Switch 2 supports up to 60fps at 4K resolution or 120fps at 1440p or 1080p resolutions. In handheld mode, the 7.9-inch, 1080p screen supports a variable refresh rate (via G-Sync) of up to 120Hz."The new RT Cores bring real-time ray tracing, delivering lifelike lighting, reflections and shadows for more immersive worlds," NVIDIA explained. "Tensor Cores power AI-driven features like Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), boosting resolution for sharper details without sacrificing image quality. Tensor Cores also enable AI-powered face tracking and background removal in video chat use cases, enhancing social gaming and streaming."For more on the new system, check out Engadget's Switch 2 hands-on and deep dive into everything we know about it.This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/nintendo/nvidia-confirms-the-switch-2-has-dlss-175033677.html?src=rss

  • Sneaker prices likely to rise as Trump slaps hefty tariffs on Vietnam, China, and Indonesia
    www.fastcompany.com
Prices of Nike Jordan and Adidas Samba sneakers are likely to rise in the U.S. after President Donald Trump imposed a raft of new tariffs on Vietnam, China, and Indonesia, key manufacturers of sportswear and apparel.Shares in Nike, Adidas and Puma dropped sharply on Thursday after Vietnam was targeted with a 46% tariff rate, Cambodia with 49%, Bangladesh with 37% and Indonesia with 32%, while Trump hiked tariffs on China by an extra 34 percentage points, following the earlier 20% tariffs.Fast-fashion retailers H&M, which sources from China and Bangladesh mainly, and Zara owner Inditex were also hit.The April 2 tariffs seem purpose-built to hobble the apparel industry, said Dylan Carden, an analyst at William Blair in Chicago. The new tariffs would increase the average U.S. import tariff rate on apparel from 14.5% in 2024 to 30.6%, according to calculations by Sheng Lu, professor of fashion and apparel studies at the University of Delaware.Based on 2024 import values, the new tariffs would result in a total of $26 billion in duties on apparel, more than double last years level, Lu said.In the past years, apparel and sportswear brands have shifted their sourcing away from China due to escalating political tensions between Washington and Beijing and have imported more from countries including Vietnam, Indonesia, and India.Retailers may not be able to fully offset these tariffs, as countering the impact of the levies on Vietnam alone would require price increases of 10% to 12%, according to UBS analysts. With additional tariffs proposed across other key Asian sourcing hubs, the scenario of shifting production now looks far less viable, narrowing the set of effective mitigation levers available to brands, the UBS analysts added. The U.S. imported more than $15 billion in textiles and garments from Vietnam in 2024, which was roughly about 10% of Vietnams total U.S. exports, according to a Jefferies note.Nike produced half its footwear and roughly 30% of its apparel in Vietnam in its 2024 financial year, while Adidas relied on the Asian nation for 39% of its footwear and 18% of its apparel last year.Shares of Nike tumbled about 8% in premarket trading, while Adidas dropped more than 10% to a one-year low. Pumas shares fell 10.7% to hit their lowest level since November 2016.Rival sportswear makers, including Lululemon, Skechers, Under Armour, Hoka maker Deckers and On Holding were all down between 8% and 15% before the bell on Thursday.Nike, Adidas and Puma did not reply to requests for comment on the tariffs, while On said it was constantly monitoring the evolving situation.Helen Reid, Reuters

  • How Elon Musks political gambit could tarnish his legacy at Tesla
    www.fastcompany.com
Tech leaders often brand themselves as disruptorsand few fit that label more snugly than Elon Musk. In the three months since joining Donald Trump in the White House following Trumps election, Musk has certainly disrupted Washington. Now, reports suggest Musk is preparing to exit his government post, having led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and overseen sweeping cuts across numerous federal agencies.Musks time in government may be short-lived, but his political legacy is already sealed. As the architect of aggressive budget slashes, his tenure has sparked backlash that could linger far beyond the halls of powerand into the boardrooms of his private ventures.Musk stepping out the political firing line might calm the headlines, but the brand damage is already done, says social media expert Matt Navarra. The internet doesnt forget, and neither do his investors. Navarra believes Musks recent behaviorwhat he calls Musks political anticshas become a heavy drag on the entrepreneurs public image. Teslas stock has plummeted nearly 30% this year, while the recent merger of X, the social platform Musk acquired in 2022, with his AI startup xAI, has drawn ridicule for its apparent lack of financial return. At the heart of the reputational and financial downturn is a growing perception that Musk has prioritized political theater over operational focus. His reputation as a visionary founder has dimmed as his companies have stumbled. The Musk DOGE initiative and spending 110% of his time with the Trump administration in the White House/Palm Beach since January inauguration has been exacerbating and so troubling for investors and Teslas stock, says Dan Ives, managing director and senior equity research analyst at Wedbush Securities.Though Ives remains optimistic about Teslas long-term potential, he acknowledges the fallout from Musks high-profile role in government austerity. Tesla has unfortunately become a political symbol because of Musk, and this is a very bad thing for the future of this technology stalwart, Ives says. With major protests erupting globally at Tesla dealerships, Tesla cars being keyed, and a full brand crisis tornado now underway, this has turned into a life of its own and cast a dark black cloud over Teslas stock.Navarra notes that this moment is particularly damaging because Musks companies were once buoyed by his persona. Tesla, X, and even SpaceX all used to benefit from his cult of personality, but now I think that charisma is curdled, he says. I think theres a growing gap between Musk the innovator and Musk the provocateur, and its hard for any brand to thrive when its CEO behaves like a chaos agent on the timeline. So far, Musk appears unmovedor unawareof the toll his political turn has taken on his empire. (He did not respond to a request for comment sent to both his government and Tesla email addresses.) But Navarra warns the consequences may be long-lasting. Even if he fades from the political narrative, his digital footprint stays loud, he says. Every tweet, every jab at the media, or every partisan swipe, it all feeds into how the public sees Tesla and X. Hes not just shaping the narrative, he is the narrative, and the longer that continues, the harder it becomes for his companies to tell a different story.
