But he emphasizes: Workers at any level are more vulnerable today than any time in memory, perhaps since the Great Depression. Leverage is always your superpower. Staying true to your worth can provide dividends. Annie Papp, executive vice president at Career Group Companies, advises that: In any job market, applicants should be prepared to come right out and ask for a raise or negotiate higher compensation. While it may seem obvious, most people dont do this, assuming their employer will offer a raise without promptingwhich is rarely the case.3. Quantify your valueMake a detailed list of your accomplishments and quantify your impact whenever possible. For example: Increased sales by 300% within one year or Managed projects that increased revenue by $X amount. Bet on yourself and plan for the futureIf the job offer isnt quite where you want it to be, focus on creating a clear path to get there over the next year. Jason Giagrande, CEO of Hospitality Farm, suggests: Bet on yourself. Propose a lucrative bonus structure with aggressive milestones or KPIs that your boss would be happy to pay if accomplished. Everyone wins, and it will motivate your growth individually as well as help your company grow. Not only does this show initiative, but it also aligns your compensation with company goals, making it easier for employers to say yes.5. Be willing to walk away (if you truly are)One key to negotiation success is the willingness to walk away. Listen carefully, remain composed, and always take time to consider the offer before responding.6. Consider negotiating benefits, not just salaryIf salary negotiations stall, consider other forms of compensation. Diversify your requests to reach a deal that satisfies both sides. Signing bonuses, professional development funds, flexible work arrangements, or extra vacation days can all hold significant value.This market is different because employers are being more cautious when it comes to hiring and budgeting. A few years ago, on the heels of the pandemic, applicants could negotiate higher salaries much more easily because every employer was in a desperate race to retain talent. Now, thats not the case. The frenzy has slowed, and employers are taking their time.While inflated salary increases may no longer be the norm, advocating for growth is still crucial. Losing strong talent can ultimately have a far greater cost than providing a reasonable raise, Papp says. MacworldAfter six generations in a row with very little change in the design of its Pro iPhone models (and three in a row with essentially zero change other than buttons), Apple is expected to finally shake things up this fall with the launch of the iPhone 17 handsets. But the bad news, according to a new report, is that the anticipated redesign is going to be a whole lot less radical than previously expected.In the latest instalment of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg leaker Mark Gurman says that while the late-2025 handsets will be a departure from the same old look, representing the lines biggest redesign since 2020, the iPhone 17 Pro will look a lot more like the 16 Pro than anticipated.When viewed from the front, Gurman claims, the iPhone 17 Pro will look much the same as its predecessor, with any noticeable changes limited to the rear of the device, specifically the camera module. The 17 Pro is still expected to feature three rear-facing camera lenses in a two left, one right triangular configuration, but these will be housed in a wider module that spans almost the entire width of the chassis.To be clear, this isnt a new rumor. In fact, this precise rumor was covered on this site in mid-February and then later that month. The wide-module concept isnt a certainty (sources could be wrong, and with five months to go until the launch its just about possible that Apple could yet change its mind) but its the current consensus among pundits and should be regarded as the most plausible outcome at this point.Whats more interesting about Gurmans article is what it tells us about the other parts of the 17-series iPhones. Namely, that earlier reports were wrong, and theyre staying the same. Renders showing a two-tone design are not an accurate representation of whats to come, he insists; the module will be the same color as the rest of the phone. And if the 17 Pro looks the same as the 16 Pro from the front, that implies that Apple doesnt intend to make any changes to the size or position of the Dynamic Island, and certainly doesnt plan to remove the cutout entirely in favor of an under-screen sensor array.This might seem disappointing, but Apple-watching veterans wont be surprised. A long way out, the companys products often get talked up by leakers and rumormongers as grand and radical reimaginings, but as the launch approaches and reality bites, pundits become more cautious and hint that major changes have been bumped to the following year when the process will repeat. It might be time forApple-as-a-service as the company looks toplot a cunning coursethrough the post-globalist freeze and offering its products as a service could help it do just that.Apple had beenexpected to introduce just such a service. In fact,Mark Gurmanrecently said those plans were quite advanced, but the company shelved the idea, presumably because of its potential impact on normal iPhone sales and consequent revenue.With the recent round of tariffs from US President Donald J. Trump,things have changed. Given a$3,000 iPhonehas become a real possibility under the tax regime, Apple knows its going to see a decline in iPhone sales anyway. It knows that those iPhones it does sell will get used longer and it knows that the inevitable cost will put a lot of consumers off from buying these devices.Apple has also bought itself some time to figure out a way forward, thanks to the planeloads of iPhones it imported into the US just before thetariff announcement was made. These should tide the company over into September, reports claim. That makes sense, because the time isnt right for the iPhone-as-a-service plan quite yet.To put the plan in effect, Apple will need the support of its carrier partners who I expect were quite resistant to the idea before they liked the margins they made on phones sold through their networks.However, pragmatism changes things, and even they can see that some money from a lower margin is still better than no margin at all. And when analysts predict iPhone prices could hit $3,000, its crystal clear sales will decline.Think about itThose tariff taxes will impact almost everything that cannot be made, grown, or harvested in the US. Theyre going to be felt, particularly by shoppers in more impoverished socio-economic groups (who also use iPhones). Most shoppers will be much too concerned about thecost of eggsto spring thousands for a phone, and while there will be an elite group of consumers for whom its business as usual, most people will endure acrisis of confidence.Like the 1920s, there may be a lot of dancing, but not much to dance about.The economic precipice the world appears to have been pushed over may be enough to make any iPhone-as-a-service plan look a lot more attractive. After all, it enables cash-strapped consumers to use the smartphone they desire (and perhaps also the watch, tablet, and Mac) for apredictable monthly fee, with AppleCare, iCloud+, and Apple services included, and doesnt require they laden themselves with credit card debt.People are ready to accept itIts not as if were not ready for such a service. Even back in 2022, CIRP Partner and Co-FounderJosh Lowitz said: Based on current consumer behavior, iPhone users are primed to adopt a subscription service that provides an iPhone bundled with useful apps. Almost half iPhone owners already finance their iPhone purchase, paying monthly for a new phone. And about one-third trade-in their old phone when they buy a new one. So, a significant portion of the user base is accustomed to never owning a phone, instead basically leasing it.Apple also gains. In this case, it benefits from potentially lower, but at least recurring, income upon which to balance its stock. And it benefits from the fact that at the end of the subscription period (or during it if the consumer cannot maintain payments), the devices will be returned for refurbishment, resale/let, and/or recycling.This also opens up thehighly lucrative second-user iPhone market, which is an income stream Apple hasnt yet fully explored. The iPhone is the most widely sold smartphone on the second-user market and holds its value the longest; company management is said to have been eyeing whether they can extract more from those sales.Pros and joesTaking things a speculative step forward, I can easily imagine the company might choose to keep the highest-end devices out of the subscription loop, making these available for sale only. Apple knows its most affluent customersmay be more acceptingof a higher pricein exchange for a truly cutting-edge product.That balance of high-end retail sales and subscription-income, bolstered by all the other plans Apple is putting in place to survive the high-tax transformation of the US economy may help it build a good and viable business in times like these. A different business, but a business all the sameWill Apple do it? Will Apple choose to offer up its products on a rental basis?Given sales cadence is going to fall anyway and, logically, product costs will increase, the company might see the plan as a way to pass the poison pill of some of these price increases onto consumers in as easy-to-stomach a remedy as possible. Its not ideal, of course, but right now company management will be focused on finding the least worse options to help support the future of its business. Analysts at Wedbush say that Apple's iPhone is the piece of technology hit the hardest by Trump's tariffs, and has lowered its price target by a whopping $75 as a result.Wedbush says Apple is hit worst by tariffs because 90% of its iPhones are assembled in ChinaWedbush has been raising its Apple stock price target on the expectation of growth because of Apple Intelligence. In December 2024, the price was raised to $325, but it has now been cut back to $250.In a note to investors seen by AppleInsider, Wedbush analysts described the current situation facing Apple as a "tariff economic Armageddon," and "a complete disaster." It bases this on how 90% of iPhones are assembled in China, which Wedbush says means Apple is more affected by the tariffs than any other comparable firm.
